EnableWirelessInterface–Checktheoptiontoenablethewirelessnetwork/band
orunchecktodisable.Note:Itisrecommendedtoleavethissettingchecked.
WirelessName(SSID):Enterthewirelessname(SSID)foryourwirelessnetwork.
ThisacronymstandsforServiceSetIdentifierandisthenameofyourwireless
network.Itdifferentiatesyourwirelessnetworkfromothersaroundyou.Bydefault,
theaccesspoint’swirelessnameisuniquetothedevice.Ifyouchoosetochangethe
SSID,changeittoanamethatyoucaneasilyremember.
WirelessSecurityMode:Selecttheproperwirelessencryption/keytypeforyour
wirelessnetwork.
Howtochoosethetypeofsecurityforyourwirelessnetwork
Thereareafewdifferentwirelesssecuritytypessupportedinwirelessnetworkingeach
havingitsowncharacteristicswhichmaybemoresuitableforyourwirelessnetwork
takingintoconsiderationcompatibility,performance,aswellasthesecuritystrength
alongwithusingolderwirelessnetworkinghardware(alsocalledlegacyhardware).
Itisstronglyrecommendedtoenablewirelesssecuritytopreventunwantedusersfrom
accessingyournetworkandnetworkresources(personaldocuments,media,etc.).
Ingeneral,itisrecommendedthatyouchoosethesecuritytypewiththehigheststrength
andperformancesupportedbythewirelesscomputersanddevicesinyournetwork.
Pleasereviewthesecuritytypestodeterminewhichoneyoushoulduseforyournetwork.
WirelessEncryptionTypes
WEP:Legacyencryptionmethodsupportedbyolder802.11b/ghardware.Thisisthe
oldestandleastsecuretypeofwirelessencryption.Itisgenerallynotrecommended
tousethisencryptionstandard,howeverifyouhaveold802.11bor802.11gwireless
adaptersorcomputerswitholdembeddedwirelesscards(wirelessclients),youmay
havetosetyouraccesspointtoWEPtoallowtheoldadapterstoconnecttothe
accesspoint.
Note:Thisencryptionstandardwilllimitconnectionspeedsto54Mbps.
WPA:ThisencryptionissignificantlymorerobustthantheWEPtechnology.Muchof
theolder802.11ghardwarewasbeenupgraded(withfirmware/driverupgrades)to
supportthisencryptionstandard.Totalwirelessspeedsunderthisencryptiontype
howeverarelimitedto54Mbps.
WPA‐Auto:Thissettingprovidestheaccesspointwiththeabilitytodetect
wirelessdevicesusingeitherWPAorWPA2encryption.Yourwirelessnetworkwill
automaticallychangetheencryptionsettingbasedonthefirstwirelessdevice
connected.Forexample,ifthefirstwirelessclientthatconnectstoyourwireless
networkusesWPAencryptionyourwirelessnetworkwilluseWPAencryption.Only
whenallwirelessclientsdisconnecttothenetworkandawirelessclientwithWPA2
encryptionconnectsyourwirelessnetworkwillthenchangetoWPA2encryption.
Note:WPA2encryptionsupports802.11nspeedsandWPAencryptionwilllimityour
connectionspeedsto54Mbps
WPA2:Thisisthemostsecurewirelessencryptionavailabletoday,similartoWPA
encryptionbutmorerobust.Thisencryptionstandardalsosupportsthehighest
connectionspeeds.TRENDnetrecommendssettingyouraccesspointtothis
encryptionstandard.Ifyoufindthatoneofyourwirelessnetworkdevicesdoesnot
supportWPA2encryption,thensetyouraccesspointtoeitherWPAorWPA‐Auto
encryption.
