WhichModule?
The9XRProacceptsalmostanymakeoftransmittermoduleoftheJRshape.Ifyoualready
haveaJRformatmoduleandanumberofreceivers,theywilloperateperfectlywellwiththe
9XRPro.Somemodulesneedalittletapetomakethemasnugfit.Othersneedtobe
insertedcarefullytoavoidbendingthepins.
Thereceiversyouusemustmatchthemodule.Tobindthereceivertothetransmitterfollow
themanufacturer'sinstructions.
Youhavetwomainchoicesofmoduleatthistime:
1. FrSky,eitherDJTorXJT.TheDJTsupportstheolderV8seriesreceiversplusD-series
(telemetry)receivers.TheXJTsupportsD-seriesandV8-IIreceivers,plusthenewer
Xseriesreceivers.
2. DSM2/DSMX:TheOrangeRXmodulesupportsbothprotocols.
Inaddition,amoduleusingtheDSMprotocolandprovidingtelemetryisexpectedsoon.
TheremarkablecapabilitiesofErsky9xfirmware,includingpowerfulmixing,largemodel
memory,flexibleradiosetup,voiceannouncements,hapticfeedback,communicationwith
yourcomputerandEepskyewillbeavailablenomatterwhatbrandofmoduleyouuse.
WhichModule?

BatterySelection
The9XRradiosrequireaninputvoltagebetween6and13volts,allowinguseofmany
differentbatteries.Themainoptionsareoutlinedbelow.
The9XRbatteryconnectoriscompatibleonlywithaJSTplugofthetypeusedforthe
balanceleadona3sLiPo/LiFebattery.Thismeansthatsuchabatterycansafelybe
pluggeddirectlyintothe9XR.OthertypesofbatterymayrequirefittingaJST-XH4pinplug.
Onlytheoutertwowiresareused:inthetransmittersockettheleftpinisnegative(black)
andtherightoneispositive(red).Beextremelycarefulaboutpolarity.Checkthepolarityof
anybatterybeforepluggingin.
Theminimumpracticalbatterycapacityisabout800mAh(milliampere-hour)butbatteriesin
the1500-2500mAhrangearenormallyused.Theseshouldgiveatleast10hoursof
operation.
TheTurnigy9XRSafetyProtected11.1v(3s)
2200mAh1.5CTransmitterPack
ThisisthebatterysoldbyHobbyKingspecificallyforthe9XRseriesofradios.Itisalow
cost,lowdischargerateLithiumPolymerbatterywhichincludesaregulatorthatisclaimedto
allowittobechargedatalowratewhilestillinthetransmitter.Thechargerusedmust
deliverlessthan0.3Amps(300mA)at12volts.Ifthebatteryisalmostfullydischargedand
atypical150mAchargerisused,chargingmaytakeabout24hours.Thechargerjackhas
thecentrepinpositive.ThisisthesameasFutabachargersbutoppositeJRandSpektrum
chargers.
Notethatthe9XRradiohasa0.3Ampfuseinthechargingcircuittoprotectthetransmitter
andbattery.Thiswillburnoutifsubjectedtoahighercurrentandisdifficulttochange.
Thebatterymaybechargedoutsidethetransmitteratmuchhigherratesusingaproper
balancingLiPocharger.Therecommendedchargerateis0.5C,i.e.,1.1Amps,atwhich
rateafullchargewilltakeabout2hours.Themaximumchargerateis2.2Amps.
Eventhoughthebattery(unlikeotherLiPos)canbechargedinthetransmitterthroughthe
chargejack,balancechargingoutofthetransmitterwithaproperLiPochargerisstrongly
recommended.

Becausethebatteryhasalowvoltageprotectioncircuitthatshutsoffpowertothe
transmitteratbetween9.6and10.0volts,itisveryimportantthatthetransmittervoltage
alarmbesetwellabovethatlevel:asettingofatleast3.6voltspercell(i.e.,10.8voltsfor
3s)isrecommended.
“AnyOld3sLiPo”
Any3S11.1voltLiPobatterythatwillfitintothebatterycompartmentcanbeusedtopower
thetransmitter.Suchbatteriesmustbechargedoutofthetransmitterwithaproper
balancingLiPocharger.Attherecommendedchargerateof1C,chargingwilltakeaboutan
hour.NotethatchargingaregularLiPowithaNiMHorNiCdchargerwilldestroythebattery
andcouldstartafire.
Toavoidtheriskofbatterydamageorevenfireandtoensurethatenoughenergyremains
toallowasafelanding,itisrecommendedthatthelowvoltagealarmbesettoatleast3.6
voltspercell(10.8voltsfor3s)
LiFe(Lithium-Iron)
Averyinexpensive3s1500mAhLiFebatteryspecificallyfortransmittersisavailable.LiFe
batteriesaresaferthanLiPobutstillneedproperhandling.Forexample,ifallowedto
dischargefully(byleavingthetransmitterturnedon)theywillbedamagedandnotbe
rechargeableinthenormalway.Instructionsforrecoverycanbefoundonlinebutseldom
workmorethanoncewithagivenbattery.Thetypicalmaximumchargevoltageis10.8volts,
butthebatterysettlesbackto9.9voltswithinthefirstfewminutesofuseanddeclinesvery
slowlyoverthedischarge.Ofthethreeleadsonthebattery,onlythebalanceleadwillfitthe
9XR.Itisrecommendedtosetthelowvoltagealarmat9.3volts.Attherecommendedrateof
1.5A,chargingwilltakeaboutanhour.
Thebatterymustbechargedoutofthetransmitterwithachargerspecificallydesignedfor
LiFe/A123typebatteries.ChargingwithaNiMHorNiCdchargerwillprobablydestroythe
battery.
NiMH
AA-sizeNiMhcellscanbemadeupintoareliable,safepacksuitableforairtravel.Lowself-
discharge(LSD)shouldbeused.Forthe9XR,asix-cellpackisthelargestthatwillfitinthe
batterycompartment.YouwillneedtofitaJST-XH4pinbalanceleadconnector(onlythe
outerwiresareused).Thebatterywillshowabout8.5vimmediatelyafterchargingandcan

bedischargedtoasafeminimumofabout6.6v.Hencesuchapackiswellwithinthe9XR
voltagelimits.Thebatterymaybechargedwhilstinstalledintheradiobutthechargerused

capacityisusuallyoverstated).TypicalspecificationsforanUltrafire186503200mAh
RechargeableBattery:Length67mm,Diameter11mm.
Theregulatorlimitsthechargecurrentto1.5Amps,sochargingtimewillbearoundtwo
hoursforanear-empty3200mAhpack.Caremustbetakenwhensolderingleadstothe
endsofthebatterynottoapplytoomuchheatsoasnottodamagetheregulator.Youwill
needtofitaJST-XH4pinbalanceleadconnector(besupercarefultogetthepolarityright!).
ThesecellsrequiretheuseofachargercapableofchargingLi-Ioncells.
Thesecellschargeto8.4voltsbutquicklyassumeaconsistentdeliveryatabout7.4to7.6
Voltsformostofthedischarge.Theminimumvoltagetoavoidbatterydamageis6.5Volts,
butitisrecommendedtosetthelowvoltagealarmat7.0voltstoallowampleheadroomfor
thetransmitterregulators(andtimetoland!).

sequenceofelevenradiosetuppages.UseLEFTorRIGHTtogetto8/11:

chargedit.ThemAhcapacityreadingisbasedonthecurrentvalue,whichisaccuratewithin
about10%.

rechargingthebattery.

SDcard
IncludedwithyourtransmitterisanSDcard.Thisisamicromemorystoragecardisabout
thesizeofafingernail.Itfitsintoaslotinthelowerrightcornerofyourtransmitterunderthe
rubbercover,betweentheheadphonejackatthebottomandthemini-USBportinthe
middle.Itisinsertedwiththegoldcontactsfacingupwards.
Itiseasiertofeelthecardthanseeitwheninstalled.Itpushesintoplaceandlocksintoa
detent.Toremoveit,pushitinagainanditwillbereleasedfromthedetent.
Toreadorwritetothecardwithacomputer,itcanbeinsertedintoaholderwhichfitsaUSB
port,oritcanbeslottedintoacardreader.Thecardwillthenappearonyourcomputerasa
massstoragedeviceandcanbeopenedjustlikeadiskdrive.Thecardcanbeanysizebut
2GBwillbelargeenoughformostpurposes.
ContentsoftheCard
Therearenormallyatleastfourfoldersintherootdirectoryofthecard:Voice,Firmware,
LogsandManuals.TheVoicefoldercontains.wavsoundfilesusedforvoice
announcementsbythesystem.TheFirmwarefoldercontainsacopyoftheErsky9X
operatingsystemfirmwareforyourradio,plusanyupdatedfirmwarefilesyoumayhave
addedinthebinaryfileformatwith.binextension.TheLogsfoldercontainsanydatayou
mayhavedownloadedfromyourtelemetrysensorsinthemodelinthecommadelimitedfile
format,i.e.,.csvextension.Themanualsfoldercontainssomeorallofthemanualslistedon
thelastpageofthisdocument.
Inaddition,individualmodelscanbebackeduptotheSDcard.Highlightthemodelinthe
ModelSelectpage,pressMENUandchooseBACKUP.Theresulting.eepmfilesarestored
inafoldercalledModels.Theycanberestoredtothetransmitterbyhighlightinganempty
modelslotandpressingMENU.ThenselectRESTOREandpressMENU.Pickwhichmodel
youwishtouseandpressMENUagain.ThemodelsintheSDcardcanbeeditedinthe
Eepskyeprogram.
FlashingFirmware
WiththeSDcardinstalledintheradio,youcaninstallfirmwarebyturningtheradioonwhile
holdingtherudderandailerontrimswitchestowardsthecentre.Toinstallthefirmwareselect
theappropriatefile(ifthereismorethanone)andlongpressMENU.Aprogressbarwill

appear.AlongEXITrestartstheradio.
Thefirmwareupdateprocessusesa“bootloader”thatisstoredinthetransmittermemory.
Ersky9Xprovidesamaintenancemodewhichenablesthebootloadertobeupdated.Ifthe
needarises,theupdatewillbeprovidedaspartofanormalfirmwarefile,buttherewillbe
specialinstructionstellingyoutoupdatethebootloaderseparately.WiththeSDcard
installed,entermaintenancemodebyholdingtheaileronandruddertrimkeysapartwhile
turningtheradioon.PressMENUtoseethefirmwarefiles,selecttheappropriatefile,and
pressMENUagaintoflashthebootloader.Turntheradiooff.
AddingVoiceandOtherFiles
Toaccessanyofthefolders,removethecardfromtheradioandinstallitintoyourUSB
holderorcardreader.Thenuseyourcomputertoopentheappropriatefolder.It'savery
goodideatocopyfoldersandtheirfilestoaback-upfolderonthecomputerforsafekeeping.
Newfilesdownloadedfromthewebormadebyyoucannowbeloadedontothecard.This
includesthelatestfirmwarefromthedevelopers,whichyoucanfindfromtheErsky9xsites
(theURLsaredetailedbelow)aswellasalternatevoicefilesavailableonline.Modelfiles
.eepmcanbecopiedintotheModelsfolderandthenuploadedintotheradiousingthe
RESTOREfunction(r202andlaterErsky9x).

OnthetoprearsideoftheradioaretrainercableconnectionportsforbothJRandFutaba
cables.TheFutabaportisalsousedforconnectingtheFrSkytelemetrycablefromthe
FrSkyDJTmodule.Thiscableisnotsuppliedwiththeradioormoduleandmustbe
purchasedseparately.
FrontView
TelemetryBasics
Telemetrymeansthatvaluesreadbysensorsintheaircraftcanbesentbythereceiverback
tothetransmitter.Signalstrengthandbatteryvoltagearethemostcommonparameters
reported,butawiderangeofotherpossibilitiesincludesGPScoordinates,fuellevel,motor
temperature,rateofclimb/descent,andcurrent.Thesignalcarryingthesedataisreceived
bythemoduleandeitherusedtotriggeranalarmwhennecessaryorannouncedoverthe
speakerorheadphones(datamayalsobedisplayedon-screen,butthisisnotveryhelpfulto
thepilot,whoseeyesareonthemodel).ThedatamayalsobeloggedontheSDcardand
reviewedlater.
FrSkyTelemetry
Theonlytelemetrysystemcompatiblewiththe9XRProandwithopensourcefirmwaresuch
asErsky9XiscurrentlyFrSky.Tousethisyoumusthaveatelemetry-capableFrSky
transmittermodule(DJTorXJT)andanFrSkytelemetry-capablereceiver(D-seriesorX-
series).RelayingthefullsetoftelemetrysignalsfromtheFrSkymoduleintothe9XRPro
radiorequiresacablethatcanbepurchasedtoconnectthefourpinsocketonthebackof
theFrSkyDJTandXJTmodulestotheFutabaTrainerportonthe9XR.Alternatively,aDJT
modulecanbemodifiedinternallytoavoidtheneedforacable(detailedinstructionsare
availableinAppendixA).Thecable(top)hasasecondleadtoallowatrainercordtobe
connectedatthesametimeasthetelemetrycable.Thismayberemovedifyoudon'twant
it.ThephotoaboveaboveshowsaDIYinstallation.TheDJTmodule,oranXJTmodulein
D8mode,whenusedwithaD-seriesreceiverwilloutputallhubsensordataviatheserial
port.Thedisplayofthereceiveddataanditsformatisdeterminedbywhatyouspecifyinthe

RealTimeClockBattery
The9XRProkeepstrackoftimeanddatebymeansofarealtimeclock(RTC)thatruns
evenwhenthetransmitteristurnedoff.Theclockispoweredbyalithiumcell(installedina
holderonthemaincircuitboard),whichisexpectedtohavealifeofmanyyears.Shouldit
everrequirereplacement,useaCR2032cellorequivalent.Timeanddatecanberesetin
theRadioSettingspages.

OtherPossibilities
Othercapabilitiesofthe9XRProhardwarewhendrivenbytheErsky9Xfirmwareinclude:
24Channels
OldermodulessuchastheFrSkyDJTcantypicallytransmit8channels,theXJT16
channels,whilelatermoduleswillsupportasmanyas24channelswithacompatible
receiver.ThisincludesanS-Busstreamthatcanbeused,forexample,byhelicopterand
multirotorflightcontrollersorcompatibleservos.
VoiceAnnouncementsandAlarms
Anytransmittereventcanbeannouncedandanyalarmortelemetryvaluespoken(seethe
manualUsingVoicewithErsky9x).Thiscanhelpthepilotkeeptrackofcurrentswitch
settingsandtakeininformationabouttimeortelemetrydata.The9XRProspeakeris
locatedonthefrontoftheradio.ItsvolumecanbesetintheRadioSet-uppagesorcontrol
canbeassignedtooneofthepotentiometers.Aheadphonejackislocatedundertherubber
flaponthebottomofthetransmitter.Whenheadphonesareusedthespeakerissilent.
HapticFeedback
Somealarmsandeventscanbesignalledbyhapticfeedback,meaningthatthetransmitter
vibratesinthepilot'shands.Thestrengthofvibrationcanbechangedintheradioset-up
pages.
TelemetryDataLogging
DatafromyourmodelmaybestoredontheSDcard.Thedatafilessoproducedhavethe
nameofthemodel,dateandtimeintheheader.Theyareincommadelimited(.csv)files
suitableforloadingintoaspreadsheet.Thedatacanbeanalysed,graphedandexportedto
awordprocessor.
OtherPossibilities

ModifyingaFrSkyDJTModulefor
Telemetry
Fortelemetrydatafromthemodeltobeconveyedfromthemoduletothe9XRPro
transmitterfordisplayandsoundingofwarnings,additionalconnectionsarerequired.These
canbeprovidedbyacablefromtheFutabaportonthetransmittertothesocketontheDJT
module.Alternatively,themodulecanbemodifiedtoeliminatetheneedforacable.Doing
sowillvoidyourmanufacturerswarranty.
TheTurnigy9XRProalreadyhastheinternalconnectionsneededtoaccepttelemetry
signalsfromthemodule.TheErsky9xfirmwarealreadyhasthecodingneededtodisplaythe
telemetrydatanotonlyfromalltheFrSkysensorsbutalsofromtheWingedShadowHowHi
altimeter.

OpeningtheDJTModule
Undothescrewsandreleasethebackcover.Itisconnectedtothecircuitboardbyashort
coaxialcabletothebaseoftheantenna.Itispossibletocompletethemodificationswithout
releasingthiscable.ThesmallU.FLconnectorusedatthecircuitboardendhaslimitedlife
andshouldnotberemovedfrequently,soitisdesirabletoleavethetheantennacable
connected.Thecircuitboard,whichliesinthebottomoftheplasticbox,isretainedby
detentsmouldedintoeachendofthebox.
TheswitchesandLEDassemblyaremountedonthethisboardtoo,sothatwhenyou
removetheboardtheywillberemovedwithit.Holdtheboxlengthwisewithbothhands,
yourthumbsonthetopedgesandfingerspressingunderneaththebaseofthebox.Push
upwardswithyourfingers,bendingthebaseoftheboxupwardsandhencepushingthe
circuitboardup.Withenoughforcethecircuitboardwillspringoutofthedetentsatoneend.

AddingtheComponents
Orientthecircuitboardwiththeswitchestowardyourselfandthetopawayfromyou.The
boardisnoworientedthesamewayasthecircuitdiagramabove.Therearefourpinsatthe
topleftoftheboardandfivesocketsonthebottomright.
Solderthe2,700Ohmresistorbetweenthebaseofthetopleftpinandthepadadjacentto
thesecondsocketfromthetopontherightsideoftheboard.Ensurethattheendofthe
resistorissolderedaslowaspossibleonthepin.Solderthe4,700Ohmresistorbetween
thebaseofthesecondfromthetopleftpinandthepadadjacenttothebottomrightsocket.
(Donotusetheadjacentholewithcoppertracearoundit,asthisterminalisnotconnected
tothebottomsocket.)
IfyouintendtousethismodulewithaFrSkyTaranis(possiblytoenableuseofolderV8
seriesreceivers)youmustfitthediode.
The“base”endofthediodeistheonewitharing(intermsofthediodesymbol,it'stheend
withthethickbaratthepointofthetriangle).Bendbackthewirefromthisendparalleltothe

coverscrews.Placethecircuitboardinsidetheboxandcarefullypushittothebottomso
thatitrestsparallelwiththebottomofthebox.Becarefulnottoapplyforcetotheantenna
cableandclip.Usingathumbateachendpushthecircuitboarduntilitengagesthedetents.
Attheendadjacenttotheswitches,thecoverhastagswhichslotintothemodulebox.Insert
thesetagsholdingtheotherendataslightupwardangle.Ensurethattheswitchesalign
withtheopeningsinthecoverandclosethetopendofthecover,makingsuretheantenna
cableisfreeinsidethebox.Insertandtightenthescrews.
