volvedinoperationof URALtrucks.Specificationsof thetrucks,briefdescriptionof
theircomponentsandassemblyunitswithillustrations,operating requirements,a
listof maintenanceoperationsandreferencedataaregivenin the Manual.
Inconnectionwithcontinuousworkrelating to improvementof the product,
whichincreasestheirreliabilityandimprovesitsoperatingconditions,particular
alterations,whicharenot highlightedinthisedition,canbeintroducedinthe de-
sign.Whenusing the trucks,thisOperationManualandthe Manualforthe power
unitmanufacturedbyYaroslavlMotorWorks,technicaldescriptionand“AirHeat-
er” Installation Manualshouldbeapplied.

FOREWORD
URALtrucks (6x6) withYAMZ-236M2andYAMZ-238M2dieselengines
manufacturedby“Autodiesel”JointStockCo., Yaroslavl,Russia,withathree-seat,
all-metalcablocatedbehindthe engine,isintendedfortransporting cargoes,
peopleandtowingtrailersonallkindsof roadsandterrain.Thebasic modelsare
URAL-4320-10 (Fig.1)andURAL-4320-31 (Fig.2)multi-purpose trucks devel-
opedbymeansofupdating URAL-4320 truck,wherehyphens –10and31(30)
indicatethe modelof the engine(i.e.YAMZ-236M2andYAMZ-238M2corre-
spondingly)installedinto the truck.

URALtrucks aredesignedforoperationatambienttemperaturesrangingfrom
+50°C down to –45°C (ashort-timeoperationat–50°C).

The chassis-cabswiththesimilarspecifications(including chassis-cabsfor
wagonbodies)aremanufacturedonthe basisof the trucks.The truckswithvarious
completesets,i.e.thosewithawinchorwithoutit, having adifferentlocation of the
sparewheelholder:behindthe cab,atthe rearof the chassisframe(withanupright
orhorizontalarrangement)ortrucks withoutaholder,buthavingatemporaryfas-
teningonthe chassisframe,withpowertake-off fromthe gearbox(PTO)ortrans-
ferbox(auxiliaryPTO),withadrawbaravailablefortowingsemi-trailersorwithout
it, canbeproduced.
Itisallowedto usethe trucks withpull-typesystems,whichhaveairoutlets
asperGOSTR50023 Standard andelectricoutletsasperGOST9200 (versionII),
the brakesystemairoutletasperGOST4364 Standard,the brakesystemsasper
GOSTR41.13Standard,agross weight, correspondingto the specifications,anda
drawbarfortrailersasperGOST2349Standard oracoupling pivot asperGOSTR
41.55 Standard forsemi-trailershaving “A”diameterasperGOST12017Standard
thatisequalto 50.8mmandmounting dimensionsasperGOST12105Standard for
ratedloadon the fifthwheelfrom49.0kN(5.0tf) to 83.4kN(8.5tf).
The trailers,models782B(2PN-4M),GKB-8350,andOdAZ-935,OdAZ-
9370 semi-trailers–forURAL-44202-0311-31trucksarethe maintrailersand
semi-trailersforthe saidtrucks andbolstertrucks.
Onthe basisof URALtrucksandchassisvariousproducts(tanktrucks,crane
trucks,oilfieldequipment, vans,etc.)aremanufacturedaswell.All commentsand
proposalsregardingtheirworkshouldbereferredtomanufacturersof thoseprod-
ucts. Mounting of variousequipmentandmechanismsonto thetruckanditschassis
isallowedonlyafteragreeing ituponwith theEngineeringDepartmentofthe
“URAL”Automobile Works.Otherwise,acustomershall bedeprivedto makeany
claimsrelating toprematurefailureof truck components.
MarkingofURALtrucksandchassis-cabs comprisesthe truckmarkingasa
wholetransportmeans,markingof the chassisandcabasconstituentpartsof the
transportmeansandenginemarking.
The truck asawholetransportmeansismarkedonthe manufacturer’splate
fixedto the r.h.panelof thecab bonnetnearbythe footstep.The platecontainsthe
trademark,atruck modelwithindicationof itscompleteset, VINidentification
number(17symbols),andan enginemodel.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTSANDPRECAUTIONS
SAFETYREQUIREMENTS
1.Beforestarting work,makesurethatthe truck anditscouplingdevicesare
ingoodworkingorder.
2.Putthe truck onaflathorizontalsiteforitsserviceandrepair.Engagethe
truck parkingbrake,switchoff the storagebattery,cutoff the fuelfeedbypulling
the enginestopleverasfarasitwillgoandputchocks underthe wheels.
3.Keeptheengineandthe starting preheatercleanandingoodworkingor-
der.Donot allowfuelandoilto leak:itcanserveasareasonoffire.Whenthe
preheaterisengaged,the drivershouldstaynearthe truck.
4.Donot warm up the engine,ifthe truck isindoors,andventilationispoor.
5. Cooling (low-freezing)liquidsandbrakefluidsaretoxic,handlethemwith
duecare.
6.Whenservicing the engine,fixthe hoodliftingmechanismwithasafety
hook1(Fig.3).
7.Toclimbthe truck bumperandcomedownfromitusethe step,the central
andextremeleftribs(inthe directionof the truck travel)of theradiatorgrill,which
haveinsertson the inside(Fig.4).
8.Priorto removing awheel,fixthe truck byputtingchocksunderthe other
wheels,whichwill not belifted,to avoidthe truck rollingdown.Slackenthe wheel
nutsandafterthatliftup the wheelwiththehelpof ajack orotherhoistinggear.
Toliftthe frontaxlewiththe jack insertitsscrewheadinthe springclamp
socket;to liftthe rearaxle– underthe springsupporting bracket.
9.Itisprohibitedto removeanywheelfromthe truck,ifall airhasnot beenlet
outof itstyrebefore.
10.Itisprohibitedto mountajustassembledanduninflatedwheelwithitstire
onto the truck andinflatethe tireusingthe tireinflation system.

Aspecialcautionisgivenbythemanufacturerregardingthenecessityto
observesafetyrulesstrictly,whenmountingthetyres(see chapter“wheelsand
tyres”).
11.Whilelowering the sparewheel,keepyourselfoutof reachof the wheel
holderhingedbracket.
12.Itisprohibitedto usethe truck withoutlock spring ring 14 (See Fig.92) and
wingednut7of the storagebatterycompartmentcover.
13.Toavoidfalling downthe storagebatteriesinthe courseof theirservicing
onthe truckmovethebatteryoutofthecontaineronlyonthe containerhinged
cover,makesureitisfixedsecurelyin itshorizontalposition.
14.Check conditionof the insulationof the wirefrom“+” batteryterminalto
the starter.Damagedinsulationcancausefire.
15. When upgrading,selectthe requiredgearingoodadvance.
16.When carryingpassengersin cab,fixthe r.h.doorlock of the cab byturn-
ingthe lock handledownwards.
17.Whencrossing guttersorroughground,donot allowthe semi-trailer
frontto thrustagainstelementsof the bolstertruck,becausethe semi-trailer
kingpincangetfree fromthe fifthwheelcatches(spontaneousunhitching).
18.Hitchandunhitchthe trailer(semi-trailer)on an evenflatside.
19.Beforeunhitching the bolstertrucks,the semi-trailersupportrollers
shouldreston the ground.Unhitching isnot allowedifthereareclearancesbetween
the rollersandground.
20.When using the winch:
-donot stayunderthe cargoto betransferredaswell ascloseto the ten-
sionedrope;
- avoidkinks orknotson the ropeasthey can resultinitsdamageandbreak.
Whenextending the ropeacross the road,putaguard andwarningsignsprohibit-
ingto pass.
21.Perform welding onthe truck,observing firesafetymeasures.Connectthe
weldergroundconductorcloseto theweldspot, having preventedthe electriccur-
rentpassing throughbearingandfrictionpairs.
22.Ifitisrequiredto dismantlethe powerunitonURAL-4320-10 trucks
with adiaphragmclutch,screwaneye boltinto the rearendof the cylinderhead.
The eye boltisenclosedin the boxof truck spareparts,toolsandaccessories.

23.Whenthe truckoperateswiththe autonomousheating unitrunning,itis
prohibited:
- to sleepin the cabwiththe autonomousheating unitrunning;
- operation of the unitwiththe suction andexhaustbranchpipescompletely
orpartiallycutoff;
- refuelling the truck withheatingunitrunning;
- to leavethe running heatingunitwithoutsupervision;
- startandoperation of the unitpouredoverwithfuel;
- to usethe heating unitwithoutagasexhaustpipe.
Whenusing the autonomousheating unit, mindifnocareistakeninthe
courseof itsoperation,aswell asitsfaultscanbethe reasonof fireorpoisoningby
exhaustgases.
PRECAUTIONS
Properoperationof thetruckanditslong servicelifecanbeensuredifyou
observeall recommendationsgiveninthisManual.
1.Whenrunningthe first1000 km(50hoursof engineoperation),complywith
the rulesdescribedin Section“Running-in (Operation)of NewTruck”.
2.Aftertheenginecoldstarting donot allowitto operatewithahighengine
speed.
3.When the engineisrunning atafull load,itsinstantaneousstopisnot per-
missible.The engineshouldrunatitsminimumidling speedwithin 1-3min.
4.Topreventairpenetrationinthe fuel-feedsystemdonot burnall the fuel
fromthe fueltank.
5. Afterthe truckhasrunadistanceof 1000km(50hoursofengineoperation)
andthe technicalmaintenanceisperformedafterrunning-in,the networkbe-
tweenthe airintakenozzleandconnectingpipeof the engineintakemanifolds
shouldbedismantled,butthe gasketshouldbekept.
6.See thatthepreheaterfuelpumpisadjustedcorrectly,notallowing open
flameinthe gasconduitof the heatexchanger.
7.Donot allowthe preheaterto operateformorethan 15secwithoutacoolant
inthe heatexchanger.Uponwashingthe truck of itsfording,engagethe pumpunit
for2-3minto removewaterfromthe preheaterairduct.
8.Starttravelling afterthecoolanthasbeenheatedup to 40°Cminimum.The
optimumtemperatureof the fluidshouldbe75-100 °C.
9.Todrainthe fluidfromthe enginecooling systemcompletely,placethe
truck on aflatsiteorinclineitforward.
10.Drainthe coolantfromtheenginecooling systemthroughthreecocks(on
the heatexchanger,on the pumpunitandon the waterpumpinletbranch)withthe
opencabheatercock andthe openplugsof theradiatorandpreheaterfilling pipe.
Ifwaterisusedinthe enginecooling systeminanemergencysituation,removethe
restofwaterfromthe preheaterliquidpumpbyengagingthe pumpunitfor10-15
secto avoidthe fanimpellerfreezing-on.Upon draining the fluid,closethe cocks.
11.Atanambienttemperaturelowerthan–10 oC,cutoff theoilcoolerby
closing the cock locatedon the cylinderblock.
12.Travelling withthe lockeddifferentialinthe transferboxonhard anddry
roadsisnot recommended,becauseitresultsinthe rapidwearof the differential
andtires.The locking levershouldbesetinthe extremefrontposition,whenthe
differentialisunlocked.

13.Whenmoving the truck outof the track,donot travelwiththe steering
wheelturnedinthe extremepositionforalong time,becauseitcancauseover-
heating of the oilinthe steering hydraulicsystemandthe pumpfailureasaresult.
By the samereason,ifthepoweristaken off theengineundersteady-statecondi-
tions,releasethe loadfromthe steering controlshaftbyturningthe steering wheel
untilitturnsfreely.
14.Beforethe truck startstravelling,the airpressureinthe brakesystem
shouldbenot less than400 kPa(4kgf/cm2). Ifalarm lamp4(see Fig.13) onthe
dashboard turnsonandthe horn (buzzer)isengaged,remedyafaultoccurredin the
pneumaticpartof the drive.
15. Whenthe truck operates,especiallyunderheavy-dutyconditions(sand,
muddyroads,etc.), takecareofconditionof the brakesandadjustthe clearance
betweenthe shoesanddrumsinduetime.Ifafaultoccurs,pilot lamp3(see Fig.
13) onthedashboard isON.Inthiscaseremedythe faultinthe hydraulicpartof
the brakedriveoradjustclearancesin the servicebrakes.
Ifthe parkingbrakeisnot efficientenough,donot adjustclearancesbetween
the parking brakeshoesanddrumwithtierod4(see Fig.84) toavoidfailureof the
parkingbrakecomponents.
16.Beforetravelling,check ifthealarmsof thepilot lampassemblies(see
Fig.13) areingoodworking order.
17.Donot usethe truck withthe loweredtailgate,becauseinthispositionit
closesthe rearsignalling lights.
18.Ifthestarterhasswitchedonrepeatedly(repeatedswitching-on1–2min
afterbreak)andthe enginehasnot beenstartedorhasstalledbyanyreasons,first
setthekeyinto itsinitialuprightposition.Frequentstarting of the enginewithits
short-term operation resultinquick dischargeof the storagebattery.
19.Donot movethe truck withthe helpof the starter,becauseitcanbea
reason of the starterfailureandquick dischargeof the storagebattery.
20.Toavoidthe generatorfailureconnectthe wirefromthe startertothe“+”
terminalof the storagebattery,andthe wirefromthe storagebatteryswitchto its
“–”terminal.
21.Connectwiresto the generatorandvoltageregulatorinaccordancewith
the marks appliedon theseproducts.
22.Priorto removingthe generatorfromthe engineswitchoff the storage
battery.
23.Duringlong-term parking of the truck disconnectthe storagebatteryfrom
the “ground”withthe helpof the “ground”switchbutton (see Fig.21).
24.Whenstarting the enginefromanexternalsourcethroughtheexternal
starting socket, itisrequiredto switchonthe storagebattery.Itisprohibitedto use
adirect-currentsourcewithratingsexceeding24 Vatacurrentof 0(zero)Aand
18.3Vatacurrentof 1000Aandthe storagebatterythathasaratedcapacitydif-
ferentfrom190 A.hbymorethan +20 A.h.
25. Removalof theseals(2pcs.)fromthespeedometerdriveflexibleshaftde-
privesacustomerto makeanyclaims.
26.Atanambienttemperaturelowerthan–15°C useanauxiliarypower
take-off onlyafterashortrun(approximately,15km)orwarming-up of the oilin
the transferboxbyothermethod,forexample,byhot air.
27.Whentowing atrailerthatlimitsmanoeuvrabilityof thetruck,removethe
rearbumpers.
28.Duringthe truck travelling the wheelvalvesof the tirepressurecontrol
systemshouldbeopened.

Whenthetruck hasbeenparkedforalong time,closethewheelvalves.Atan
ambienttemperaturelowerthat–35 °C open the wheelvalves15–20kmafterbe-
ginningof travel.
Uponopeningthe wheelvalvesblowthroughthe tirepressurecontrolsystem
withthe airfromthe tires(see the Section “CentralTirePressureControlSystem”).
29.Whentowingthe truck withthe shut-downengine,the primaryandin-
termediateshaftsofthegearboxdonot rotate,andinthiscasetheoilpumpdoes
not operateanddoesnot delivergreaseinto the bearingsof the mainshaftgears
andonconicalsurfacesof the synchronizers,anditwill causeseizing of the sliding
surfaces,wearof the synchronizerringsresultsinfailureof the wholegearbox.
Toperform towing disengagethe clutchandshiftthe direct(fourth)gearin the
gearboxordisconnectthe gearboxfromthetransmission.Towing of the truck fora
distanceexceeding 20 kmwithoutdisconnecting the cardanshaftorpressing the
clutchwiththe engagedgearboxisnot permitted.
30.Manoeuvring,particularlywhilereversing,donot allowbiganglesof the
roadtrainfolding toavoiddamageof the drawbar.
31.Whenusing atraileratanambienttemperatureless than-25°C,donot
leavetherubberbufferof thedrawbarunderloadbeforealong parking to avoid
freezing of the pressedrubberbumperandappearinganaxialclearanceinthe
drawbar.Disconnectthetrailerorunloadthe axialloadfromtherubberbufferby
moving the truck forwardsandbackwards.
32.When aloaderhaving atotalweightexceeding 3200 kg isrunning onto the
truck platform,putshields(boards)underitswheels.
33.Putheavysmall-sizedcargoes,whichcancauselocalsaggingof the plat-
form floorordamagethebodysidesandseatcomponents,onto sills(boards)and
fixthemsecurely.Placethe cargosothatitscentreof inertia islocatedin the mid-
dleof the truck platform.
34.The truckloading heightwasincreasedonURAL-4320-0611-10truck.
Dueto increasingthe truck centreof inertiaitsstaticlateralstabilitydecreased.
35.Inconnectionwithincreasingthe effortonthe diaphragmclutchpedal
withoutapneumohydraulicboosteranddueto the factthatthe clutchcannot be
released,ifthepressureisnotavailableinthesupplying bottleof theclutchre-
leasing aircylinder,itisnot recommendedto parkthe truck withanengagedgear
foralong time(exceeding fourhours).
Ifafterparking the truck foralong timeorforthereason ofhighairleaks,the
completeairleakageoccurredandthe gearisengaged,itisnecessarytodisengage
the gear(setting inthe neutralposition)byalternateturning the enginecrankshaft
to the rightandleftthroughapproximately180 o,using the techniquedescribedin
the Section“Adjustmentof ValveTiming Mechanism”of theOperationmanualfor
YAMZ-236M2andYAMZ-238M2trucks orreleasethe clutchbyfilling the
pneumaticsystembythe compressedairwiththe helpofanothertruck via the
towingvalve.
36.URAL-44202-0311-31*bolstertrucks equippedbylighting devicesin
conformitywithGOSTR41.48 Standard canonlyoperatewithsemi-trailerswhich
haveadistancefromthe pinto the nearestpartof the mechanismof the semi-
trailersupporting devicenot less that2000 mm.
