through the documentation. Further documents apply in
combination with this operating and installation instruc-
tions. We do not accept liability for any damages resulting
from failure to observe these instructions.

that are delivered with other components of your
system.
These operating instructions are included with the
individual components of the system.
1.1 Storing documents
>Please store these operating and installation instruc-
tions and all other applicable documents in a safe
place in case they are needed for future reference.

Undercounter unit: The identification plate is on
the left-hand side of the casing.

1.4 CE label
The CE label shows that the products comply with the
basic requirements of the applicable directives as stated
on the identification plate.
The declaration of conformity can be viewed at the man-
ufacturer’s site.

2.1 Safety and warning information
>When operating the system, observe the general
safety instructions and the warning notes which
appear before each of the actions.
2.1.1 Classification of warnings
The warning notes are classified in accordance with the
severity of the possible danger using the following warn-
ing signs and signal words:

2.1.2 Structure of warnings
Warning signs are identified by an upper and lower sepa-
rating line and are laid out according to the following
basic principle:

2.2 Intended use
There is a risk of injury or death to the user or others, or
of damage to the product and other property, in the
event of improper use or use for which it is not intended.
The units must only be used to heat up drinking water in
accordance with the drinking water ordinance and are
suitable for use only in an enclosed, frost-free room in a
domestic environment. Any other use or use beyond
that specified shall be considered as improper use.
Intended use includes the following:
– observance of accompanying operating, installation
and servicing instructions for the product and any
other system components
– compliance with all inspection and maintenance con-
ditions listed in the instructions.
The unit is intended for use in a domestic environment,
i.e. it can be operated safely by persons who have not
received training in how to operate it. The unit can also
be used in a non-household environment, e.g. small busi-
nesses, provided it is used in the same way.
This unit can be used by children over eight years old
and also by persons with limited physical, sensory or
mental capabilities or insufficient experience and/or
knowledge if they are supervised or have been provided
with instructions on how to safely use the unit, and they
understand the risks resulting from using the unit. Chil-
dren must not play with the unit. Cleaning and user-
maintenance work must not be carried out by children
unless they are supervised.
Using the electric hot water storage tank in vehicles is
regarded as improper use. Units that are not classed as
vehicles are those that are installed in a fixed and per-
manent location (known as "fixed installation").
Damage to the unit due to corrosion cannot be excluded
if the water does not comply with the drinking water
ordinance.
The Vaillant electric hot water storage tank is a depres-
surised unit and must be used only in conjunction with a
low-pressure fitting.
Any other use or use beyond that specified shall be con-
sidered as improper use. The manufacturer/supplier is
not liable for any damage resulting from such use. The
user alone bears the risk.
Caution!
Improper use of any kind is prohibited.

2.3 General safety instructions
Installation, start-up, repairs and maintenance must
be performed to a professional standard.
The unit must only be installed by an approved heating
engineer. The existing regulations, rules and guidelines
must be observed when doing so. Start-up, repairs and
maintenance must also be carried out by an approved
technician.
Defective units must be reported to the supplier
before installation.
>If the unit is damaged in any way, inform your sup-
plier before it is connected.
Avoid material damage caused by incorrect
installation.
The Vaillant electric domestic hot water cylinder is an
open-vented cylinder and must be used only in conjunc-
tion with a low-pressure valve.
>Use only low-pressure valves.
Ensure anti-corrosion protection.
The units may only be used to heat up potable water.
Damage to the unit due to corrosion cannot be excluded
if the water does not comply with the legal requirements
for drinking water.
>Before installation, check that the water quality meets
the legal requirements for drinking water.
Fill the cylinder in good time (heating engineer's
responsibility).
>Before initial start-up or after draining, always fill the
electric domestic hot water cylinder before the mains
plug is plugged in.
Avoid leaks.
>Have leaks repaired by an approved heating engineer.
Risk of death from electric shock from live supply
lines and connections.
During all work on the open unit, particularly on electri-
cal lines and connections, there is a risk of death from
electric shock.
>Do not carry out any work on the unit yourself.
>Inform your heating engineer if your electric domestic
hot water cylinder is not working correctly.
Avoid risk of being scalded by hot water.
The outlet valves and escaping water may be as hot as
85°C.
>When using the electric domestic hot water cylinder,
be aware of the risk of scalding from high outlet tem-
peratures.
>There is a particular risk of scalding whenever the
electric domestic hot water cylinder is set to "hot
water".
>For normal usage, set the temperature selector of the
electric domestic hot water cylinder to economy
mode "E", which maintains a temperature of approxi-
mately 60°C.
Avoid material damage inside the unit caused by poor
quality water.
An electric domestic hot water cylinder must be used
exclusively to heat up potable water.
This drinking water must meet specific legal require-
ments for quality. Otherwise, it would not be possible
to rule out the risk of corrosion inside the unit.
>Consult an approved heating engineer if you have
any doubt as to the requirements for water quality.
Avoid frost damage (operator's responsibility).
Freezing conditions can cause damage to the unit.
>You should therefore ensure that the electric domes-
tic hot water cylinder always remains in operation
during freezing conditions and that all rooms are
sufficiently heated.
Even if rooms, or the whole dwelling, are not in use for
certain periods, the heating must remain in operation.
Frost protection is only active while the unit is con-
nected to the power supply. The temperature selector
must be set to "frost protection". The unit must be con-
nected to the power supply.
The unit settings are unable to provide frost protection
for supply pipes or outlet valves.
If the electric domestic hot water cylinder is placed out
of operation for a relatively long period of time in an
unheated room (e.g. during a winter holiday), the electric
domestic hot water cylinder must be disconnected from
the mains power supply and drained completely.
>Consult an approved heating engineer if you have any
doubt as to requirements.
>Ensure that your electric domestic hot water cylinder
is installed in a permanently frost-free room.
Avoid frost damage (heating engineer's responsibility).
Freezing conditions can cause damage to the unit.
>Please inform the operator about the possibilities
of frost protection.
>Tell the operator that the frost protection function
will be unavailable if the electric domestic hot water
cylinder is completely switched off.
>Inform the operator that the electric domestic hot
water cylinder must be disconnected from the mains
power supply and drained completely if the domestic
hot water cylinder is to be placed out of operation for
a relatively long period of time in an unheated room
where there is a risk of frost
>Inform the operator that the unit settings are unable
to provide frost protection for supply pipes or outlet
valves.

Avoid material damage due to improper use
and/or unsuitable tools
(heating engineer's responsibility).
Unsuitable tools and/or improper use of tools can cause
damage, such as water leaks.
>Always use a suitable open-ended spanner to tighten
or loosen threaded connections.
>Do not use pipe wrenches, extensions, etc.
Do not make any modifications to the electric domes-
tic hot water cylinder's environment.
No changes must be made to the following equipment:
– the electric domestic hot water cylinder
– the water and power supply lines
– any structural conditions that could affect the opera-
tional reliability of the unit
>Do not make any changes to the above.
>In your role as heating engineer, you should inform
the operator that no changes must be made to the
above.
In the event of a fault:
>Unplug the mains plug.
>If the electric domestic hot water cylinder is not pro-
ducing hot water or if any other fault occurs, inform
an approved heating engineer.
>Do not carry out any repairs yourself.
>Never not open the unit cover under any circum-
stances.
Do not use timer switches.
If you were to fit a timer switch, the safety temperature
limiter (STL) may reset itself inadvertently in the event
of a fault. The unit may suffer damage as a result.
>Never use a timer switch to control the unit under
any circumstances.
2.4 Rules
Please observe the existing national rules and regula-
tions, standards, laws and guidelines.

3 Equipment and functional
description
The VEN 5/6 electric domestic hot water cylinder pro-
vides rapid delivery of hot water with none of the heat
losses associated with long piping. The electric domestic
hot water cylinder is ideal for the non-central, economi-
cal and heating-system-independent supply of heated
water and offers the following characteristics:
– Polypropylene tank
– Controller wired ready for connection in accordance
with DIN 4753 Part 1
– Splash protection IP 24 D
3.1 Overview
The Vaillant electric domestic hot water cylinder com-
prises a corrosion-proof inner tank, high-quality thermal
insulation and an outer jacket. A tubular heating ele-
ment inside the storage tank operates in combination
with integral control and safety devices to provide elec-
tric heating of the water in the cylinder.
The electric domestic hot water cylinder is an open-
vented or low-pressure vessel, which means that the
inner tank is not mains pressurised but is open to the
atmosphere.

3.2 Function
Electric domestic hot water cylinder models VEN 5/6 O
and U are open-vented storage tanks in which the water
content is open to atmospheric pressure through the hot
water outlet pipe even with the hot water tap closed.
This means that the electric domestic hot water cylinder
is never under mains pressure.
Whenever the hot water tap is opened, cold water flows
through the cold water supply pipe into the cylinder and
forces the heated water out through the hot water out-
let pipe.

The cylinder operates according to the immersion heater
principle with a tubular heating element mounted inside
the inner tank. The tubular heating element in electric
domestic hot water cylinder models VEN 5/6 O and U has
a heating output of 2 kW. The temperature is controlled
by a controller comprising a sensor with capillary tube
linked to a mechanical switch that switches the electrical
circuit on and off based on the value set at the tempera-
ture selector. The temperature selector can be used to
select a temperature of up to a maximum of 85°C.
The minimum value that can be selected is 7 °C. The
minimum temperature of 7°C applies even with the tem-
perature selector set to "frost protection". This prevents
the unit from freezing in an unheated room. In order for
the "frost protection" function to operate, the unit must
not be disconnected from the power mains (do not
unplug the plug).
An indicator lamp is switched in parallel to the tubular
heating element.
This lamp lights up whenever the cylinder is being
heated.
Vaillant cylinders VEN 5 O and VEN 5 U are equipped
with a resettable safety temperature limiter, which inter-
rupts the electrical circuit in the event of a temperature
controller defect and switches off the tubular heating
element.
The volume of water in the cylinder expands with rising
temperature.
The excess expansion water drips out along the hot
water outlet pipe and out of the swivel spout of the
mixer tap. This process is both necessary and normal
and requires the use of low-pressure valves developed
specifically for these cylinders (see Vaillant's range of
accessories). These valves ensure a constant connection
between the cylinder content and the atmosphere even
with the hot water tap closed.
4 Installation
(by the heating engineer)
aRisk of death.
Risk of death due to improper installation.
All work involved in the installation, start-up,
maintenance and repair of the electric domes-
tic hot water cylinder must only be carried
out by an approved heating engineer who
also assumes the responsibility for installing
the unit properly and putting it into service
for the first time. The electric domestic hot
water cylinder must be installed in strict com-
pliance with these installation instructions.
>The following installation sequence must
be observed:
– Wall-mounting the unit
– Connecting the plumbing
– Filling the cylinder with water
– Connecting to the power supply.
iFlush the cold water lines thoroughly before
installation.

unit.
4.2 Installation site
bCaution:
Risk of material damage caused by aggres-
sive vapours or dust.
Aggressive vapours and dust in the installa-
tion room can cause corrosion damage to the
electric domestic hot water cylinder.
>Make sure that the installation room is free
of aggressive vapours and dust.
bCaution:
Risk of frost damage to the unit.
If an electric domestic hot water cylinder is
placed out of operation for a relatively long
period of time in an unheated room in cold
weather, the water in the unit and pipes may
freeze. This would result in damage to the
unit.
>Install the unit in a permanently frost-free
room.
iIn rooms with a bath or shower, the electric
domestic hot water cylinder must be installed
in accordance with all relevant legal require-
ments, e.g. VDE 0100, Part 701 (UK equivalent
= BS 7671 Section 601.

4.4 Wall-mounting the unit
bCaution!
Possible damage caused by unsuitable
fixing elements.
There is a risk of material damage and mal-
functions if unsuitable fixing elements are
used to mount the electric domestic hot water
cylinder.
>Select the correct fixing elements (screws,
wall plugs, etc.) for the weight of the elec-
tric domestic hot water cylinder and type
of wall.
>The electric domestic hot water cylinder must be
installed upright on a vertical wall.

>Using the wall bracket, mark the mounting holes on
the wall, bearing in mind that the electric domestic
hot water cylinder must be fitted vertically. The two
outer holes determine the mounting alignment.
>Drill the holes in the wall for the wall plugs.
>Select the correct fixing elements (screws, wall plugs,
etc.) for mounting the unit under consideration of its
weight (see "Technical data") and the type of wall.
>Mount the wall bracket horizontally on the wall using
the two outer holes. The centre hole helps you to cen-
tre the electric domestic hot water cylinder.
>Using the mounting lugs, hang the electric domestic
hot water cylinder on the bracket from above. The
pipe unions should point upwards on an undercounter
unit and downwards on an overcounter unit.
iThe electric domestic hot water cylinder is
compatible with the following wall brackets:
– Old Vaillant units,
– Siemens units,
– Stiebel-Eltron units.
4.5 Plumbing
aDanger!
Risk of being scalded by hot water!
The hot water temperature can reach 85°C.
>Ensure that nobody is put at risk by hot
water or steam.
bCaution!
Possible unit damage caused by incorrect
installation.
The Vaillant electric domestic hot water cylin-
der must be used only in conjunction with a
low-pressure valve.
>Fit a low-pressure valve only.
bCaution!
Possible unit damage due to improper use
and/or unsuitable tools.
Improper use and/or unsuitable tools may
result in material damage (e. g. water leaks).
>Always use a suitable open-ended spanner
to tighten or undo threaded connections.
>Do not use pipe wrenches, extensions, etc.

Possible damage due to excessive water
pressure.
High water pressure may result in pressure
damage to water lines.
>Observe the installation instructions for the
low-pressure valve.
>Always fit the restrictor element before the
low-pressure valve is connected. The
restrictor element is included with the low-
pressure valve.
bCaution!
Possible damage caused by leaking water
connections.
Leaks may occur due to strains in the line
material.
>Take care not to strain the lines as you
tighten the water connections.
The following water fittings can be connected:
Undercounter unit
- VNU 2 Standard for wash stand and sink,
order no. 302595
- VNU 2 Temperier Standard for wash stand and sink,
order no. 302596
Overcounter unit
- VNO 2 two-handle valve fitting, order no. 000423
- 250 mm swivel spout, order no. 000468
iFor a connected water pressure of over 5 bar,
we recommend that you fit a domestic pres-
sure regulator.
iNo hoses, aerators, nozzles or similar are per-
mitted to be fitted to the outlet of the valve
fitting.
iA flow of 5 litres per minute must not be
exceeded.
>Fit the restrictor element in accordance with the
installation instructions supplied with the low-pres-
sure valve.
>Connect the low-pressure valve.
4.6 Filling the domestic hot water cylinder
Before initial start-up or after draining (e.g. due to risk
of frost, maintenance or work on the plumbing), you
must fill the electric domestic hot water cylinder with
water before you plug in the mains plug.
>Fill the electric domestic hot water cylinder with
water.
Keep the outlet open
As the electric domestic hot water cylinder heats up, the
water inside will expand and warm water will drip out of
the swivel spout.
>Keep the low-pressure valve with swivel spout open.
Do not connect a hose or aerator.
iWith the Vaillant low-pressure valve, open the
hot water tap with the cold water tap fully
closed until a uniform stream of water flows
out.
iWith the low-pressure thermostatic mixing
valve, turn the temperature selector to red as
far as it goes and open the tap until a uniform
stream of water flows out.

4.7 Electrical installation
eDanger!
Risk of death from electric shock!
Touching live connections can cause serious
personal injury.
>Isolate all supplies from the power supply
before carrying out electrical work.
>Check all supply lines and connections for
absence of voltage.
>Ensure that the power cannot be restored
inadvertently to any of the supply lines and
connections while you are working on the
unit.
bCaution!
Material damage.
The unit may be damaged if the correct
installation sequence is not observed.
>Do not connect to the power until the VEN
electric domestic hot water cylinder has
been filled with water.

iThe electric domestic hot water cylinder must
be connected only to an earthed socket out-
let (2 kW, 230 V~) installed in accordance with
all applicable regulations.
The earthed socket outlet must be freely
accessible at all times.
The electric domestic hot water cylinder is
not suitable for a fixed wiring installation.
The power plug must not be plugged into the
safety socket outlet until the electric domes-
tic hot water cylinder has been filled with
water.

5 Start-up
(by the heating engineer)
Initial start-up or start-up after a repair must be carried
out only by an approved heating engineer.
aDanger!
Risk of being scalded by hot water!
With the electric domestic hot water cylinder,
the outlet temperatures at the draw-off points
can be up to 85°C. There is a danger of scald-
ing at the hot water draw-off points and drain
cock if the temperatures are greater than
60°C. Young children and elderly persons are
particularly at risk, even at lower tempera-
tures.
>Ensure that nobody is put at risk.

>Fill the electric domestic hot water cylinder with
water (¬ Section 4.5).
>Plug the mains plug into an earthed socket out-
let (2 kW, 230 V~).
>Set the temperature selector to "E".
The indicator lamp (2) lights up until the selected water
temperature is reached. As the unit is heating, water
must be seen to drip from the outlet valve. The indicator
lamp goes out as soon as the selected water tempera-
ture is reached.
5.2 Limiting the temperature selection range
The maximum hot water outlet temperature can be lim-
ited to protect persons (e.g. young children) from scald-
ing.
This is achieved by restricting how far the temperature
selector can be turned so that the economy set-
ting "E" (approximately 60°C) or "hot water" setting
(approximately 40°C) cannot be exceeded.

Risk of being scalded by hot water!
Above a water temperature of 43°C, there is
a risk of scalding. With the temperature selec-
tor set to "hot water", the water may reach a
temperature of up to 85 °C.
>Inform the operator that there is a risk of
scalding above a water temperature of
43°C.
>Advise the operator that, for normal usage,
the temperature selector should be set to
economy mode "E" to reduce the risk of
scalding.
The operator must be shown how to handle the electric
domestic hot water cylinder and how it works.
>Provide the operator with all relevant instructions and
unit documentation.
>Go through the operating instructions with the opera-
tor and answer any questions.
>Draw special attention to the safety instructions
which the operator must follow.
>Inform the operator of the necessity to ensure that
the system is regularly inspected/maintained (inspec-
tion and maintenance contract).
>Tell the operator to store the instructions near the
electric domestic hot water cylinder.
>Inform the operator about the ways to limit the hot
water outlet temperature so that scalding can be
prevented.

7.1 Start-up
Initial start-up or start-up after a repair must be carried
out only by an approved heating engineer.

Risk of being scalded by hot water!
With the VEN, the outlet temperatures at the
draw-off points can be up to 85°C. There is a
danger of scalding at the hot water draw-off
points and drain cock if the temperatures are
greater than 60°C. Young children and eld-
erly persons are particularly at risk, even at
lower temperatures.
>Ensure that nobody is put at risk.
>Do not set the water temperature higher
than you actually require.

7.2 Setting the hot water temperature
The water temperature is infinitely variable and is
adjusted using the rotary temperature selector.

1 "Frost protection" position
The water is prevented from freezing (with the
electric domestic hot water cylinder connected to
the power).
2 "Warm water" position
In the interests of hygiene, this position should be
selected only if specifically required (water approxi-
mately 40°C).
3 Economy position "E"
Recommended position with detent, for normal
warm water requirements (water approximately
60°C).
4 "Hot water" position
This position should be selected only in special
cases and as briefly as possible (water approxi-
mately 85 °C).
>Turn the temperature selector to the required
position.
We recommend setting a water temperature of 60°C
(economy mode "E") for economic and hygienic reasons
(e.g. Legionella). In this mode, operation of the electric
domestic hot water cylinder is particularly cost-effective
(in the context of energy efficiency legislation) and
limescale formation is kept low. For this reason, the tem-
perature selected with economy mode "E" should be
exceeded only in special cases and as briefly as possible,
particularly in areas of extremely hard water.
Limiting the temperature selection range
Your heating engineer can limit how far the temperature
selector can turn so that the temperature for economy
mode "E" (approximately 60°C) or "warm water"
(approximately 40°C) cannot be exceeded.
This temperature limitation is particularly recommended
if young children live in the household, for example.
>Consult your heating engineer.
iThe electric domestic hot water cylinder
switches on automatically if the water tem-
perature falls below the temperature selected
at the temperature selector. The electric
domestic hot water cylinder switches off auto-
matically as soon as the water reaches the
temperature selected at the temperature
selector.

8 Energy saving tips
7.3 Heating water
The indicator lamp (2) lights up if the selected water
temperature has not yet been reached. The indicator
lamp goes out as soon as the selected water tempera-
ture is reached. The heating element switches off.
iDuring the heating process, the water inside
will expand and warm water will drip out of
the swivel spout. This is normal for open-
vented cylinders and cannot be prevented by
closing the draw-off valve (valve) more tightly.
7.4 Activating frost protection
The water is prevented from freezing (with the electric
domestic hot water cylinder connected to the power). In
frost protection position (¬ (1), Fig.7.3, Fig.7.4), the
water in the tank remains cold. The electric domestic hot
water cylinder is protected from freezing by a frost pro-
tection function (while connected to the power).
>If there is a risk of frost, do not unplug the mains plug
under any circumstances
>Do not remove any fuses in the electrical wiring under
any circumstances.
>Set the temperature selector to the "frost protection"
position
7.5 Taking out of service
If the electric domestic hot water cylinder is to be placed
out of operation for a relatively long period of time in an
unheated room, the water in the electric domestic hot
water cylinder can be drained off (after disconnection
from the mains power supply).
8 Energy saving tips
You can help to save energy by following the tips and
advice below:
Appropriate hot water temperature
The hot water should only be heated up to the extent
that is necessary for use. Any further heating results in
unnecessary power consumption and hot water temper-
atures of more than 60 °C also lead to increased limes-
cale sediment.
For you, this means that you should:
>Switch your electric domestic hot water cylinder to
economy mode position "E" for normal usage.
>Always select the water temperature that you actually
require.
>Turn the temperature selector to the "hot water"
position only in special cases where you need warmer
water than economy mode "E" is able to provide.
>Turn the temperature selector back to economy mode
position "E" after you have taken the hot water that
you required.
Recommended setting
To save energy, we recommend economy mode "E"
(approximately 60°C) for normal hot water require-
ments.
This will help you to save energy and keep limescale
formation low.
