Purpose
This document describes the process for replacing the 10Gb Ethernet SFP optic transceiver modules
located on the rear of a Veritas appliance.
Affected Models
The instructions that are provided in this document pertain to the following Veritas appliance hardware:
• 5150 Appliance
Electrical Safety
The static discharged by human bodies can damage static-sensitive components on the boards.
When installing and maintaining the equipment, observe appropriate electrostatic safety precautions
to prevent personnel injuries or device damage.
When operating a device in an electrostatic sensitive area, you must take electrostatic-discharge
(ESD)-preventive measures. These include wearing ESD-preventive gloves, an ESD-preventive wrist
strap, and ESD-preventive clothes to avoid personnel injury or device damage.
To prevent damage to the device, pay attention to the following during operations:
• Do not touch devices with bare hands because ESD from the human body may damage the
electrostatically sensitive elements on a board.
• When dealing with the server or any of the internal components, wear an ESD-preventive wrist
strap, ESD-preventive gloves, and ESD-preventive suit.
About removing and replacing a 10Gb Ethernet SFP optic
transceiver module in a Veritas appliance
The 10Gb Ethernet SFP modules are installed on the Dual Port 10/25Gb Ethernet PCIe card installed
in PCIe riser assembly 1 located at the rear of the appliance.

Hardware Service Procedure

This repair can be accomplished with the appliance installed in the rack.
Requirements
Verify that you have the following items:
• Hot-swappable 10Gb Ethernet SFP optic transceiver modules
• ESD wrist strap
Locating the appliance with the faulty component
Use the following steps to locate the appliance with the faulty component.
To locate the appliance with the faulty component
•Verify the appliance serial number. The serial number is located on the rear panel of the appliance
and begins with the letters VTAS.
You can also find the serial number in the pull out tab on the front of the appliance.

Removing an Ethernet SFP optic transceiver module
Use the following procedure to remove an Ethernet SFP optic transceiver module.
To remove an Ethernet SFP optic transceiver module
1Put on an ESD-compliant wrist strap or take other ESD-protective measures.
Note: The static discharged by human bodies can damage static-sensitive components on the
boards. When installing and maintaining the equipment you must observe appropriate electrostatic
safety precautions to prevent personnel injuries or device damage.
2Remove the fibre optic cable from the Ethernet SFP optic transceiver module.
Warning: The Ethernet SFP optic transceiver module and the fibre optic cable use lasers to
transmit data. Do not look directly into the SFP optic transceiver module or the end of the fibre
optic cable.
3Lift the lever to pull the Ethernet SFP optic module straight out of the appliance.

Installing a Ethernet SFP optic transceiver module
Use the following procedure to install a Ethernet SFP optic transceiver module.
To install a Ethernet SFP optic transceiver module
1Put on an ESD-compliant wrist strap or take other ESD-protective measures.
Note: The static discharged by human bodies can damage static-sensitive components on the
boards. When installing and maintaining the equipment you must observe appropriate electrostatic
safety precautions to prevent personnel injuries or device damage.
2Locate the new Ethernet SFP optic module and remove the black end cap.
3Lift the lever and slide the replacement SFP optic module into the appliance until it seats firmly
in place and lower the lever.
4Replace the fibre optic cable by pushing it directly into the Ethernet SFP optic module until it
clicks into place.
