12. Avoidany draftsthatalter burnerflamepatterns. Donot
allow fans to blow directly into fireplace. Do not place
a blower inside burn area of firebox. Ceiling fans may
create drafts that alter burner flame patterns. Sooting
and improper burning will occur.
13. CAUTION: Candles, incense, oil lamps, etc. produce
combustion by-products including soot. Vent-free
appliances will not filter or clean soot produced by
these types of products. In addition, the smoke and/
or aromatics (scents) may be re-burnt in the vent-free
appliancewhichcan produceodors.It isrecommended
to minimize the use of candles, incense, etc. while the
vent-free appliance is in operation.
14. An unvented gas-fired heater uses air (oxygen) from
theroomin whichit isinstalled.Provisions foradequate
combustion and ventilation air must be provided. See
installation guidelines.
15. This heater shall not be installed in a room or space
unlessthe required volume ofindoor combustion airis
providedby the method describedin the NationalFuel
Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54, the International
Fuel Gas Code or applicable local codes.
16. Keep room area clear and free from combustible
materials, gasoline and other flammable vapors and
liquids.
17. Unventedgas heatersarea supplementalzone heater.
They are not intended to be a primary heating appli-
ance.
18. Unvented gas heaters emit moisture into the living
area. In most homes of average construction, this
does not pose a problem. In houses of extremely
tight construction, additional mechanical ventilation is
recommended.
19. Duringmanufacturing,fabricating andshipping,various
components of this appliance are treated with certain
oils, films or bonding agents. These chemicals are not
harmful but may produce annoying smoke and smells

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
8. CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING: Early signs of
carbon monoxide poisoning are similar to the flu with
headaches,dizzinessand/or nausea.If youhavethese
signs, obtain fresh air immediately. Have the heater
serviced as it may not be operating properly.
9. This unit complies withANSI Z21.11.2 unvented heat-
ers standard, latest edition.
10. Do not install the CFX Model in a bathroom or bed-
room.
11. Correct installation of the ceramic fiber logs, proper
location of the heater, and annual cleaning are neces-
saryto avoid potentialproblems with sooting. Sooting,
resulting from improper installation or operation, can
settleon surfaces outsidethe fireplace. Seelog place-
ment instructions for proper installation.
1. Due to high temperatures, the appliance be located
out of traffic and away from furniture and draperies.
2. Children and adults should be alerted to the hazard
of high surface temperature and should stay away
to avoid burns or clothing ignition.
3. Youngchildren should becarefully supervised when
they are in the same room with the appliance.
4. Donot place clothingor otherflammable material on
or near the appliance.
5. Anysafety screen orguard removedfor servicing an
appliance, must be replaced prior to operating the
heater.
6. Installation and repair should be done by a qualified
service person.
7. To prevent malfunction and/or sooting, an unvented
gas heater should be cleaned before use at least
annually by a professional service person. More
frequent cleaning may be required due to excessive
lint from carpeting, bedding material, etc. It is
imperative that control compartments, burners and
circulating air passageways be kept clean.
•Any change to this heater or its controls can be dangerous.
•Improper installation or use of the heater can cause serious injury or death from fire, burns, explosion
or carbon monoxide poisoning.
•Do not allow fans to blow directly into the fireplace. Avoid any drafts that alter burner flame patterns.
•Do not use a blower insert, heat exchanger insert or other accessory, not approved for use with this
heater where applicable.

The initial break-in operation should last two to three
hours with the burner at the highest setting. Provide
maximum ventilation by opening windows or doors to
allowodors todissipate.Any odors remainingafter this
initial break-in period will be slight and will disappear
with continued use.
20. Input ratings are shown in BTU per hour and are for
elevationsup to2,000 feet.For elevationsabove2,000
feet,input ratingsshouldbe reduced4 percentforeach
1,000 feet above sea level. Refer to the National Fuel
Gas Code.
21. The appliance and its appliance main gas valve must
be disconnected from the gas supply piping system
duringany pressure testingof that systemat test pres-
sures in excess of 1/2 psig (3.5 kPa).
22. The appliance must be isolated from the gas supply
piping system by closing its equipment shutoff valve
during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping
system at test pressures equal to or less than 1/2 psig
(3.5 kPa).
23. Donot use thisroom heater ifany part hasbeen under
water. Immediately call a qualified service technician
to inspect the room heater and to replace any part of
thecontrol systemand anygas controlwhich hasbeen
under water.
24. Never burn solid fuels in a fireplace where a unvented
room heater is installed.
25. Always have a fireplace screen in place when the
appliance is in operation, and unless other provisions
for combustion air are provided, the screen shall have
an opening(s) for induction of combustion air.
26. Do not fill spaces around the firebox with insulation or
other materials. These spaces must be maintained to
prevent the firebox from coming in contact with com-
bustible materials.
Thisappliancemaybeinstalledinanaftermarket,
permanently located, manufactured (mobile)
home, where not prohibited by local codes.
This appliance is only for use with the type of
gas indicatedon the ratingplate. This appliance
is not convertible for use with other gases.

OPERATION
This unvented gas heater requires no outside venting and
burns cleanly with high heating efficiency.
This zero-clearance unvented gas heater can be installed
against any wall that is accessible to a gas line.

IGNITION CONTROLS
ThePiezo igniter allowsignitionof the pilotwithout the use
of matches or batteries.
The millivolt control has four (4) positions:
OFF - Allgas to the gaslogs is shut offat the
valve.
IGN - Valveposition tolight/maintaina stand-
ing pilot.
ON - Valve position to turn ON/OFF log set
with remote switch/thermostat.

Thegas log heateris fittedwith a speciallydesigned safety
pilot light which senses the amount of oxygen available in
theroom andshuts thegaslog heateroffif theoxygen level
beginsto dropbelow a satisfactorylevel.The pilotcan only
be re-lit when adequate fresh air is available.
THERMAL GENERATOR
The millivolt gas log pilot is fitted with a millivolt generator
to provide power for remote activation.

UNPACKING
Make sure you have received all parts:
Check your packing list to verify that all listed parts have
been received. You should have the following:
•Unvented gas heater
•Two (2) 90° angle brackets*
•Facing
• Installation/operating instructions
•Two (2) anchoring screws
•Cabinet*
• Ceramic fiber logs
•Four (4) black screws *
*Not included with CFXWM models
Millivolt controlled heater designed to be operated with
optional devices for ON/OFF functions.
• Hand held Remote with receiver
• Wall T-stat with 20' wire
• Wall switch with 20' wire
• Hand held Thermostat Remote
GETTING STARTED
Carefully inspect the contents for shipping damage. If any
parts are missing or damaged, immediately inform the
dealer from whom you purchased the appliance. Do not
attempt to install any part of the appliance unless you
have all parts in good condition.
What you will need for installation:
You must have the following items available before pro-
ceeding with installation:
•External regulator (for propane/LPG only)
• Piping which complies with local codes
• Phillips head screwdriver
• Pipe sealant approved for use with propane/LPG
(Resistant to sulfur compounds)
• Pipe wrench
Gloves are recommended when handling
ceramic fiber logs to prevent skin irritation
from loose fibers. Logs are fragile — handle
with care.
CAUTION
INSTALLATION INFORMATION
In planning the installation for the fireplace it is neces-
sary to determine where the unit is to be installed and
whether optional accessories are desired. Gas supply
piping should also be planned. The following steps rep-
resent the normal sequence of installation. Each instal-
lation is unique, however, and might require a different
sequence.
1. Determine desired location for fireplace. Refer to the
Location of Fireplace and Clearances and Height
Requirements sections in this manual.
NOTE: Be sure all packing material has been removed
from underside the unit.
2. Assemble mantel (if applicable) and install fireplace
according to the instructions in this manual.
2. Install logs per instructions found in this manual.
3. Field wire main power supply to units with fan kit. Refer
tothe ElectricalSection found inthis manual.(Electrical
connections should only be performed by an experi-
enced, licensed certified tradesman).
4. Installoptional ON/OFFkit onunitswith millivoltcontrol.
Refer to the installation instructions included with the
kit and also refer to the Electrical Wiring section found
in this manual.
5. Plumb gas line according to the Connecting the
Gas section found in this manual. (Gas connections
should only be performed by an experienced,
licensed/certified tradesman).
WARNING
Do not install the heater:
• Where curtains, furniture, clothing,
or other flammable objects are less
than 42" from the front of the heater.
•In high traffic areas.
•In windy or drafty areas.
WARNING: If the area in which the heater
may be operated does not meet the
required volume for indoor combustion
air, combustion and ventilation air shall be
provided byone of themethods described inthe
National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54,
the International Fuel Gas Code or applicable
local codes.

DETERMINING FIREPLACE LOCATION
Carefully select the best location for installation of your
unvented fireplace. The following factors should be taken
into consideration.
•Clearance to side wall, ceiling, woodwork and window
or other combustibles. Refer to Clearances and Height
Requirementssection.Minimum clearancestocombus-
tibles must be maintained.
•Location must not be affected by drafts caused by
kitchen exhaust fans, ceiling fans, return air registers
for forced air furnaces/air conditioners, windows or
doors.
•Installationmust provideadequate ventilation andcom-
bustion air.
•DO NOT INSTALL THE CFX MODEL IN A BED-
ROOM OR BATHROOM.
•Location should be out of high traffic areas and away
from furniture and draperies due to heat from firebox.

Follow these instructions carefully to ensure safe instal-
lation. Failure to follow these requirements may create a
fire hazard.
1. Sidewall Clearances —Theclearance from theinside
oftheappliance toanycombustible adjacentwallshould
not be less than 9". Figure 5
2. Ceiling Clearance — The ceiling must be at least 42"
from the top of the firebox opening. Figure 5
3. Back Wall Clearance —The appliancemay be placed
against a combustible back wall.

FIREPLACE INSTALLATION
Floor Clearance —Thefireplace may beinstalled directly
onacombustible floorora raisedplatformof anappropriate
height. Do not place fireplace on carpeting, vinyl, tile or
othersoft floorcoverings.It may, however, beplaced onflat
wood, plywood, particle board or other hard surfaces. Be
sure fireplace rests on a solid continuous floor or platform
with appropriate framing for support and so that no cold
air can enter from under the firebox.
Mantel clearances —TheCFX face mustbe installed.If a
combustiblemantel is installed.It mustmeet the clearance
requirements detailed in Figure 6.
NOTE: The Vermont Castings Group Barrington Mantel
model series is specifically designed to comply with all
mantel temperature requirements. (The CFX32NVDW
uses the BWC400-DW. The CFX24NVDW uses the
BWC300-DW.)Any custom-built mantel must comply with
allclearancerequirements showninthisinstruction manual.
If unit is to be built in, the fireplace framing can be built
beforeorafter theapplianceisset inplace.BE SURE THAT
ALLPACKING MATERIAL HASBEEN REMOVEDFROM
THE UNDERSIDE OF THE UNIT PRIOR TO SETTING
THE FIREBOX IN PLACE. Construct fireplace framing
following Figure 2 on Page 6 for fireplace dimensions. The
framing headers may rest directly on top of the firebox.
The fireplace may be installed directly on a combustible
floor or a raised platform of an appropriate height. Do
not place fireplace on carpeting, vinyl, tile or other soft
floor coverings. It may, however, be placed on flat wood,
plywood, particle board or other hard surfaces. Be sure
fireplace rests on a solid continuous floor or platform with
appropriate framing for support and so that no cold air can
enter from under the firebox.

When finishing a custom cabinet, mantel or other built-in
enclosure, the opening size to accommodate the fireplace with
trim installed is as follows:
FIREPLACE INSTALLATION IN WALL
Note: The information below applies only to the CFXWM
models.
1. Remove5 totalscrews (3 top,2 bottom)to remove front
face.
2. Select proper nailing flanges located on each side of
the firebox and bend them out.
3. Slidethe fireboxintopreparedframingorpositionfirebox
in its final position and frame later.
4. Levelthe fireboxbychecking thetop edgeofthe firebox.
Shim if necessary.
5. Anchor firebox to the side framing members using 8d
nails or other suitable fasteners. Figure 7

FIREPLACE INSTALLATION
MANTEL INSTALLATION
Note: the information below applies only to the CFXU and
CFXDW models.
1. Place base near final position. Make sure you have
access to all four (4) sides.
2. Place sides in the approximate location on base.
Align back edge of side with back of base. Secure
joining block #1 to bottom of side using two (2) 11⁄4"
screws. Be sure joining block is flush with bottom of
side piece. (Do not attach to base at this time)
3. With the aid of an assistant, and using two (2) joining
block #4 and (12) 11⁄4" screws, secure header to the
sides. Carefully match the moulding.
4. Adjust cabinet assembly so it is centered from side
to side and the back of the sides are aligned with the
back of the base.
5. Temporarily place top on side/header assembly. Ad-
just sides parallel to the base and top side. Secure
the sides to the base using two (2) 11⁄4" screws in
each of the joining blocks.
6. Once the mantel is assembled, temporarily place the
fireplace into the mantel in order to locate the trim
pieces.

7. Center the fireplace in the opening with the inside of
the fireplace trim or facing even with the inside of the
front of the mantel.
8. Attach the horizontal trim piece to the mantel header.
Make sure the horizontal trim is centered and there is
an approximate 1/4" gap between the bottom of the
horizontal trim and the top of the fireplace. Secure
with two (2) screws; one on each end of the trim piece
in the pre-drilled holes.
9. Place the vertical trim pieces so the edge is about 1/4"
from the fireplace body. Make sure the joint between
the trim pieces is satisfactory. Secure through joining
block #3 into horizontal trim using two (2) screws. At-
tach joining block #2 to the bottom of the vertical trim.
Repeat for other side.
10. Remove fireplace and move mantel to its final posi-
tion. Cut wall base moulding as necessary to provide
adequate fit against wall.
11. Locate (anti-tip) bracket on wall so the cleat on the
underside of the mantel top is captured in the wall
bracket and the wall bracket is screwed into a stud.
FIREBOX TO MANTEL INSTALLATION
Note: the information below applies only to the CFXU and
CFXDW models.
1. Slide fireplace into mantel.
2. Use the two (2) 'L' brackets provided to secure the
fireplace to the mantel. Figure 11
3. When the fireplace is in the proper position, centered
in mantel opening, remove the control panel door and
secure fireplace through holes provided in base to the
floor of the mantel using screws provided. Figure 12
WARNING: Do not operate the unit
without the screen frame panel installed.

The screen on the front of the CFX is easily removable for

1. Removeoptional firebrickpanels frompackaging.Check

3. Remove fireplace screen (Refer to page 11, figure 13)
and logs.
4. Place rear firebrick panel on back wall of firebox. Set
bottom of panel behind the bracket tabs of the grate.

up the hole in the retainer clip with the hole inside the
firebox. Using Phillips screwdriver, attach the retainer

GAS PIPE INSTALLATION ITEMS NEEDED
Before installing gas pipe, make sure you have the items
listed below.
•External regulator
•Piping (check local codes)
•Sealant (resistant to propane/LP gas)

NPTtapis an acceptablealternative to testgauge connec-
tion.Purchase the CSAdesign-certified equipment shutoff
valve from your dealer.
Forpropane/LPconnections only,the installermust supply
an external regulator. The external regulator will reduce
incoming gas pressure. You must reduce incoming gas
pressure to between 11 and 13 inches of water. If you do
notreduce incominggaspressure, burnersystem regulator
damagecould occur. Installexternal regulatorwith thevent
pointing down as shown in Figure 16. Pointing the vent
down protects it from freezing rain or sleet.
When using copper of flex connectors use only fittings
approved for gas connections. The gas control inlet is
3/8" NPT.
CAUTION
For propane/LP units, never connect
fireplace directly to the propane/LP supply.
This burner system requires an external
regulator (not supplied). Install the external
regulator between the burner system and
propane/LP supply.

CONNECT THE GAS
NOTE: The gas line connection may be made using 1/2"
rigid tubing or an approved flex connector. Since some
municipalities have additional local codes it is always best
to consult your local authorities and the current edition of
the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI.Z223.1, NFPA54. In
Canada CSA-B149 (1 or 2) Installation Code.

IMPORTANT: Install main gas valve (equipment shutoff
valve) in an accessible location. The main gas valve is for
turning on or shutting off the gas to the fireplace.

CAUTION
A manual shutoff valve must be installed
upstream of the appliance. Union tee
and plugged 1/8” NPT pressure tapping
point should be installed upstream of the

CAUTION
Use pipe joint sealant that is resistant to
liquid petroleum (LP) gas.
Apply pipe joint sealant lightly to male threads. This will
prevent excess sealant from going into pipe. Excess seal-
ant in pipe could result in clogged burner system valves.
We recommend that you install a sediment trap/drip leg in
supply line as shown in Figure 17. Locate sediment trap/
dripleg whereit iswithin reachforcleaning. Installin piping
system between fuel supply and burner system. Locate
sediment trap/drip leg where trapped matter is not likely
to freeze. A sediment trap collects moisture and contami-
nants and keeps them from going into the burner system
gas controls. If sediment trap/drip leg is not installed or is
installed wrong, burner system may not run properly.

CHECK GAS PRESSURE
1. Check gas type. The gas supply must be the same as
stated on the appliance’s rating decal. If the gas supply
is different from the fireplace, STOP! Do not install the
appliance. Contact your dealer immediately.
2. Toeaseinstallation,a 24"(610mm) flexlinewithmanual
shut-offvalvehas been providedwith onthis appliance.
Install and attach 1/2" gas line onto shut-off valve.
3. After completing gas line connection, purge air from
gas line and test all gas joints from the gas meter to the
fireplace for leaks. Use a solution of 50/50 water and
soap solution or a gas sniffer.
4. To adjust flame height, turn HI/LO knob to HI to get
maximum pressure to burner. Turn HI/LO knob to LO
to get minimum pressure.
5. To check gas pressures at valve, turn captured screw
counter clockwise 2 or 3 turns and then place tubing
to pressure gauge over test point. Turn unit to high.

CONNECTING REMOTE RECEIVER
NOTE: These instructions supersede the section entitled
"Hearth Mount" in the millivolt hand-held remote instruc-
tions supplied with the remote control.
1. Remove bottom louver door.
2. Connect the remote connectors located in the unit.
3. ApplyVelcro®padswith self-adhesivebackingto bottom
of remote receiver and to floor of compartment behind
access panel.
4. Attach remote receiver to firebox with Velcro®pads.
Control switch must face forward.
CHECK SYSTEM OPERATION
The millivolt system and individual components may be
checked with a millivolt meter having a 0-1000 mV range.
Conduct each check shown in chart below by connection
meter test leads to terminals as indicated.
A. COMPLETE MILLIVOLT SYSTEM CHECK
(“A” Reading - Thermostat contacts CLOSED - Con-
trol Knob “ON” - Main burner should be come ON)
a. If the reading is more than 100 millivolts and the
automatic valve still does not come on, replace the
control.
b. If the closed circuit reading (“A” reading) is less than
100 millivolts, determine cause for low reading, pro-
ceed to Section B below.
B. Thermopile Output Reading Check
(“B” Reading - Thermostat contacts OPEN - Main
burner OFF)
1. Check gas pressure to the unit. If gas pressure is
within minimum and maximum on data plate, then
check pilot voltage, 325 millivolts minimum. If the
minimum millivolt reading is not obtainable, replace
pilot.

CAUTION
DO NOT sprinkle volcanic rock on the logs
or around the pilot or the main burner. This
may cause sooting. Only place volcanic
rock on the floor of the fireplace.
During initial operation of the new heater,
burning logs will give off a paper burning
smell and orange flames will be present.
Simply open the windows for a few hours
to vent the odor.
FINAL STEPS
PLACE ROCK WOOL
After installing logs, pull apart dime-size pieces of rock
wool. Place rock wool evenly over burner ports. Wash
hands after installing rock wool. Itching may occur.
•Use only rock wool provided with log
set.
•Do not add additional rock wool.
•Place rock wool on burner ports only.
•Keep airgap between rearlog and burner
CLEAN.

Flames from the pilot, front and rear burner should be
visually checked as soon as the heater is installed.
In addition, periodically check the flames visually during
operation.
CHECK THE PILOT FLAME
The pilot flame must always be present when the
heater is in operation. It should just touch the top of the
thermocouple tip for natural. Refer to Figure 24 for correct
pilot flame.
If the pilot flame does not touch the thermocouple, then
the main burner cannot function reliably. Refer to Figure
25 for incorrect shape of pilot flame.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Avoid any drafts that alter burner flame patterns. Do
not allow fans to blow directly into the fireplace. Do not
place a blower inside the burn area of the firebox. Ceiling
fans may create drafts that alter flame patterns. Sooting
and improper burning will result.
During manufacturing, fabricating and shipping, various
components of this appliance are treated with certain oils,
films or bonding agents. These chemicals are not harm-
ful, but may produce annoying smoke and smells as they
are burned off during the initial operation of the appliance,
possibly causing headaches or eye or lung irritation. This
is a normal and temporary occurrence.
Theinitial break-in operationshould lasttwoto threehours
with the burner at the highest setting. Provide maximum
ventilation by opening windows or doors to allow odors to
dissipate.Anyodors remaining afterthis initial break-inwill
be slight and will disappear with continued use.
OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
FORCED AIR KIT
If you are installing the forced air kit (Models BLO24-T or
BLOT), see the installation instructions provided with the
kit for electrical wiring requirements or the blower instal-
lation section.
Model CFX24 uses blower model BLO24T.
Model CFX32 uses blower model BLOT.
The firebox must be connected to main power supply at
time of firebox installation. The blower must be installed
priortothe installationof theunventedheater.Theelectrical
connections must be made before the firebox is framed
and enclosed in the finished walls.
FIREBRICK
Optional firebrick kits can be installed. Refer to installation
instructions provided with kit or Page 12.
CAUTION
Electrical connections should only
be performed by a qualified, licensed
electrician. The main power must be off
when connecting to main electrical power
supply or performing service.
