Target group
These operating instructions are designed for heating
system users.
This appliance can also be operated by children of 8
years and older, as well as by individuals with reduced
physical, sensory or mental faculties or those lacking
in experience and knowledge, provided such individu-
als are being supervised or have been instructed in the
safe use of this appliance as well as in any risks aris-
ing from it.

In case of fire
Danger
Fire presents a risk of burns and explosion.
■Shut down the heating system.
■Use a tested fire extinguisher, class ABC.
What to do if the heating system develops a fault
Danger
Fault messages indicate faults in the heating
system. If faults are not rectified, they can have
life threatening consequences.
Do not acknowledge fault messages several
times in quick succession. Inform your heating
contractor so the cause can be analysed and
the fault rectified.
Conditions for siting
Danger
Sealed vents result in a lack of combustion air.
This leads to incomplete combustion and the
formation of life threatening carbon monoxide.
Never cover or close existing vents.
Do not make any subsequent modifications to
the building characteristics that could affect safe
operation (e.g. cable/pipework routing, cladding
or partitions).
Danger
Easily flammable liquids and materials (e.g.
naphtha, solvents, cleaning agents, paints or
paper) can cause deflagration and fire.
Never store or use such materials in the installa-
tion room or in direct proximity to the heating
system.
!Please note
Incorrect ambient conditions can lead to heating
system damage and can put safe operation at
risk.
■Ensure ambient temperatures are above 0 °C
and below 35 °C.
■Prevent air contamination by halogenated
hydrocarbons (e.g. as contained in paints, sol-
vents or cleaning fluids) and excessive dust
(e.g. through grinding/polishing work).
■Avoid continuously high humidity levels (e.g.
through continuous drying of washing).
Extractors
The operation of appliances that extract air to the out-
side (cooker hoods, extractors, air conditioning units,
etc.) can create vacuum pressure. If the boiler is oper-
ated at the same time, this can lead to reverse flow of
the flue gas.
Danger
The simultaneous operation of the boiler and
appliances that extract air to the outside can
result in life threatening poisoning due to
reverse flow of the flue gas.
Take suitable steps to ensure an adequate sup-
ply of combustion air. If necessary, contact your
heating contractor.

Intended use
The appliance is only intended to be installed and
operated in sealed unvented heating systems that
comply with EN 12828, with due attention paid to the
associated installation, service and operating instruc-
tions. It is only designed for the heating of heating
water that is of potable water quality.
Intended use presupposes that a fixed installation in
conjunction with permissible, system-specific compo-
nents has been carried out.
Commercial or industrial usage for a purpose other
than heating the building or DHW shall be deemed
inappropriate.
Any usage beyond this must be approved by the man-
ufacturer in each individual case.
Incorrect usage or operation of the appliance (e.g. the
appliance being operated for longer periods when
open) is prohibited and will result in an exclusion of lia-
bility. Incorrect usage also occurs if the components in
the heating system are modified from their intended
use (e.g. if the flue gas and ventilation air paths are
sealed) or if other fuels than those intended for this
appliance are used.

The Vitoflex 300-UF is a fully automatic solid fuel boiler
with grate combustion.
The boiler is made of steel and is lined with firebricks.
The combustion retort and the infeed grate are instal-
led in the combustion chamber.
In the Vitoflex 300-UF, fuels as defined in chapter
"Ordering fuel" can be combusted in an automatic
process.

■Control unit
The system control unit controls the combustion sys-
tem with all associated components.
■Fuel supply
The feed system transports fuel into the combustion
retort from the side. A feed screw conveyor is instal-
led at the side for this purpose.
■Infeed grate
Burning fuel is pushed out of the combustion retort
onto the sloping grate and from there onto the infeed
grate. The infeed grate has moving parts which can
transport the spent fuel (ash) towards the ash
removal area.
■Ash removal
The infeed grate pushes ash into the ash trough.
From here, an ash removal screw conveyor trans-
ports the ash out of the combustion chamber.
■Boiler safety equipment
The heat exchanger contains a high limit safety cut-
out and water pressure switches (positive and/or
vacuum pressure).
The combustion chamber is fitted with positive pres-
sure limiters.
In the fuel supply area, safety limit switches are
installed on the inspection covers.
■Burn-back protection
Burn-back protection on the feed screw conveyor is
provided either by a shut-off gate valve or a rotary
lock valve. The type of locking device used depends
on the position and size of the fuel store and the
pressure conditions in the fuel transport system. An
extinguishing device is also installed which floods the
feed screw conveyor with water when a selectable
response temperature is reached.

■Operating instructions
The operating instructions form part of this product.
All persons working with the product must have read
and understood the contents of these operating
instructions. Pass on the operating instructions to
every user.
■Integration into an overall system
The Vitoflex 300-UF is part of an overall system. The
boiler's sensors and drive units are connected to the
system control unit via the electrical installation. The
heating system installation links the boiler to the
heating system circuit. The energy generated is sup-
plied to the consumers.
Operating phases
In automatic mode, the boiler enters the following
operating phases. The current operating phase is dis-
played on the programming unit.
The order of the operating phases normally follows the
sequence from "OFF" to "Burnout".
■Off
The system is switched off.
■Flush comb. chamber
The combustion chamber is flushed with fresh air so
that sufficient fresh air is available for combustion.
With each normal cycle, the combustion chamber is
purged with ambient air.
■Fill hopper
The feed screw conveyor is filled with fuel.
The hopper is filled up.
■Combustion chamber, fill screw conveyor
Fuel is transported into the combustion chamber for
a set duration.
■Ignition
The ignition system is in operation. The control unit
monitors ignition.
■Load
The system is in heating mode.
■Maintaining
If the flow temperature rises above the "Firebed
maintenance ON" value, the boiler switches to the
"Maintaining" operating phase. Output is reduced
and fuel is supplied in a pre-selected amount.
If the flow temperature drops below the "Firebed
maintenance OFF" value, the boiler switches to the
"Load" operating phase.
■Run screw conveyor until empty
After the selected temperature has been reached or
the system has been switched off via the program-
ming unit or due to a fault, a controlled system shut-
down takes place.
The remaining fuel in the feed screw conveyor is
added to the combustion chamber.
■Burnout
After burnout the control unit switches into operating
phase "OFF".
Exception: A switchover to the "Emergency burnout"
operating phase occurs in the case of faults.
■Standby ON - OFF
The system is off; the start button is preselected.
■Emergency burnout
The system has been switched off automatically as a
result of one of the following faults:
–"O2 measurement fault"
–"Vacuum pressure measurement fault"
–"Fault, combustion chamber sensor"
The feed is run until empty.
After burnout the control unit switches into operating
phase "OFF".
Commissioning
The commissioning and adjusting of the control unit to
local conditions and to building characteristics must be
carried out by Viessmann Holzheiztechnik GmbH or by
a qualified contractor authorised by Viessmann.

As the user of new combustion equipment, you may be
obliged to notify your local flue gas inspector of the
installation [check local regulations]. Your local flue gas
inspector [where applicable] will also provide you with
information on additional activities concerning your
combustion equipment (such as regular testing, clean-
ing, etc.).

This LED illuminates when the control unit is in
operation.
Supply voltage is present.
CRed LED
This LED flashes red while the control unit is ramp-
ing up or when there is a fault in the heating sys-
tem.
DUSB connection
The programming unit is equipped with a
touchscreen. To input settings and check information,
tap the on-screen buttons.
On some of the control unit pages you can enter text
and values. Tap an entry field and a keyboard or num-
ber pad will appear on the touchscreen.
■Entry field
After tapping on an entry field, the data can be modi-
fied via the keyboard or number pad.
■ESC button
The keyboard or number pad is closed and no data
is saved.
■Enter button
Saves the entered value and closes the keyboard or
number pad.
Default display
The default display provides you with the most fre-
quently used settings and checks.
The default display is shown either as an "Overview"
or as a "Detailed screen".
In the "Overview" display, the large buttons show the
status of the subsections. The symbol shows that
all components in the subsection are operational.
In the "Detailed screen", the large buttons show the
most important actual values for the subsections of the
boiler.
The "Overview" and "Detailed screen" are accessed
via the button in the footer.

"Menu" Calling up the menu
The system is "Switched on". You can
switch the system off.
The system is "Switched off". You can
switch the system on.
"No faults" in the system
To the fault and service/maintenance mes-
sages.
"Fault" in the system
To the fault and service/maintenance mes-
sages.
"Load" Indicates the "Current operating phase"
"Load", "OFF" or "Cleaning"
"Observer"
As Observer, you can only view the control
unit pages and activate automatic mode from
the default display.
You can switch to the "Boiler technician" user
group.
"Boiler technician"
As the boiler technician, you can switch the
heating system on and off and change sys-
tem parameters.
You can switch to the "Observer" user group.
The system is currently in "Automatic
mode".

A component is currently in "Manual mode".
Symbol colour: Orange
You can switch on manual mode. When you
do so, all components which are in manual
mode are switched back to automatic mode
simultaneously.

Warning
Risk of injury due to untrained personnel.
■Only allow trained and experienced personnel
to operate the product.
■Personnel under training must only work on
the product under supervision.
■During the heat-up phase, the heating system
must be permanently supervised by trained
and experienced personnel.
Warning
There is a risk of deflagration when the combus-
tion chamber door is opened. Poking around in
the firebed leads to oxygenation, which can pro-
duce a flash. Both can result in severe burns.
■Never open the combustion chamber door
during operation.
■Before opening the combustion chamber door,
ensure that you are standing in a safe place.
■Never poke around in the firebed.
Caution
Risk of burns due to hot system components.
■Only touch handles and identified parts.
■Never touch sight glasses or their retainers.
The sight glasses and retainers are connected
directly to the combustion chamber.
Starting up
1. Switch on the system at the programming unit using
the button.
The combustion chamber is automatically filled with
fuel.
With ignition system (automatic) Without ignition system (manual)
The control unit switches to the "Ignition" operating
phase.
The ignition fan is started.
2. Open the combustion chamber door.
3. Light a fire inside the combustion chamber at the
front using kindling.
4. Slide the burning kindling into the combustion retort.
5. Close the combustion chamber door.
The amount of fuel can be adjusted in manual mode
under "Fuel supply"; see page 34.
Fuel with moisture content above M40
If the moisture content in the fuel is above M40, the
combustion chamber must first be heated.
Even if an ignition system is installed, you will still need
to perform steps 2 to 5 described in the above table.
■To keep the fire lit, add more kindling if necessary.
■After one hour, start the ignition either automatically
or manually.
Ignition monitoring
The ignition process is monitored by the control unit.
After no more than 45 minutes, the oxygen content in
the flue gas must drop below 15 % for a set period.
If the oxygen content has dropped sufficiently, the
boiler switches to the "Load" operating phase. The
ignition phase is completed.
If the oxygen content has not dropped sufficiently, the
fault message "Fault, repeat heat-up" is displayed.
1. Check the fuel. If necessary, use drier fuel or pre-
heat. Also check the amount of fuel. If necessary
increase the amount of fuel supplied.
2. Acknowledge the fault message.

Silo filling
When the "Silo filling" function is activated, the boiler
runs through the start cycle up to the point of ignition.
Instead of igniting, the boiler then switches back to
operating phase "OFF" . When it next starts up, the
boiler skips the operating phase "Filling" and switches
directly to the "Ignition" phase.
Requirements
■External charging or cycle control
■Heating system is not in operation for 6 hours
1. In the default display, tap the boiler symbol

2. Start the function via the "Silo filling" button.
Shutting down
Switch off the system with the button.
The control unit switches the system off automatically.

The number of parameters varies depending on the
system configuration.
The parameter values can be changed by inputting
new values in the fields highlighted in white.

Flame
"Settings" tab
During flue gas recirculation, flue gas is mixed in with
the supply air. This lowers the flame temperature, due
to the reduced oxygen content in the ventilation air.
Combustion efficiency increases as a result. The pro-
portion of flue gas fed into the combustion chamber
depends on the output.

column and enter the time.
Confirm with "Enter" or terminate the entry with
"Esc".
4. Activate the set heating periods by selecting the
weekdays.
The display of the selected days of the week
changes to showing the in "green".
5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 to input further heating peri-
ods.

The "Enter password" window is displayed.
3. Enter the "Password" via the number pad.

Cleaning the touchscreen

2. "Cleaning screen"
The touchscreen is inactive for 20 seconds and
can be touched without effect.
3. Clean the touchscreen.
Setting the language
Tap the following on-screen buttons:

2. "Language"
Symbol for the selected language
3. Tap on the "Flag" for the required language.
Confirm with "OK" or terminate the entry with
"Cancel".
The text in the user interfaces is changed to the
selected language.
Setting the backlighting
Tap the following on-screen buttons:
1. "Panel"
2. "Switch backlighting off after ..."
Time specification for backlighting
3. Enter the duration for the backlighting via the num-
ber pad.
Confirm with "Enter" or terminate the entry with
"Esc".
Designating heating circuits
Tap the following on-screen buttons:
1. "Panel"
2. "Designating heating circuits"
Designation for heating zones
3. Tap on the "Heating zone" line and designate the
heating zone using the keyboard.
Confirm with "Enter" or terminate the entry with

4. Repeat step 3 to designate additional heating cir-
