If you smell flue gas
Danger
Flue gas can lead to life threatening
poisoning.
■Shut down the heating system.
■Ventilate the installation site.
■Close all doors in the living space.
If there is a fire
Danger
Fire presents a risk of burns and
explosion.

■Close the shut-off valves in the
fuel supply lines.
■Use a tested fire extinguisher,
class ABC.
What to do if water escapes from the
appliance
Danger
If water escapes from the appliance
there is a risk of electric shock.
■Switch off the heating system at
the external isolator (e.g. fuse
box, domestic distribution board).
■Notify your heating contractor.
If the heating system develops a fault
Danger
Fault messages indicate faults in
the heating system. If faults are not
rectified, they can have life threat-
ening consequences.
Do not acknowledge fault mes-
sages several times in quick suc-
cession. Inform your heating con-
tractor so the cause can be ana-
lysed and the fault rectified.
Installation room requirements
Danger
Sealed vents result in a lack of
combustion air. This leads to incom-
plete combustion and the formation
of life threatening carbon monoxide.
Never cover or close existing vents.
Do not make any subsequent modi-
fications to the building characteris-
tics that could affect safe operation
(e.g. cable/pipework routing, clad-
ding or partitions).
Danger
Easily flammable liquids and mate-
rials (e.g. naphtha/petrol, solvents,
cleaning agents, paints or paper)
can cause deflagration and fire.
Never store or use such materials
in the boiler room or in direct prox-
imity to the heating system.
!Please note
Incorrect ambient conditions can
lead to heating system damage and
can put safe operation at risk.
■Ensure ambient temperatures are
above 0 °C and below 35 °C.
■Prevent air contamination by halo-
genated hydrocarbons (e.g. as
contained in paints, solvents or
cleaning fluids) and excessive
dust (e.g. through grinding/polish-
ing work).
■Avoid continuously high humidity
levels (e.g. through continuous
drying of washing).
Extractors
The operation of appliances that extract
air to the outside (cooker hoods, extrac-
tors, air conditioning units, etc.) can cre-
ate negative pressure. If the boiler is
operated at the same time, this can lead
to a reverse flow of flue gas.

the system or the corresponding internet services. No
liability is accepted for losses resulting from inappropri-

Terminology
To provide you with a better understanding of the func-
tions of your control unit, some terminology is
explained. This information can be found in chapter
"Terminology" in the Appendix.
Intended use
The appliance is intended solely for installation and
operation in sealed unvented heating systems that
comply with EN 12828, with due attention paid to the
associated installation, service and operating instruc-
tions. It is only designed for heating up heating water
that is of potable water quality.
Intended use presupposes that a fixed installation in
conjunction with permissible, system-specific compo-
nents has been carried out.
Commercial or industrial usage for a purpose other
than heating the building or DHW shall be deemed
inappropriate.
Any usage beyond this must be approved by the man-
ufacturer in each individual case.

Incorrect usage or operation of the appliance (e.g. the
appliance being opened by the system user) is prohibi-
ted and will result in an exclusion of liability. Incorrect
usage also occurs if the components in the heating
system are modified from their intended use (e.g. if the
flue gas and ventilation air paths are sealed).
Product information
Vitovalor PA2
The Vitovalor PA2 is a fuel cell based micro CHP unit.
For the generation of heat and power, the
Vitovalor PA2 is operated with natural gas. The
Vitovalor PA2 can be integrated into existing systems.
Fuel cell module
The integral reformer generates the required hydrogen
from natural gas.
Hydraulics
The integral high efficiency circulation pump pumps
the heating water heated by the fuel cell into the sec-
ondary circuit. Depending on system configuration, this
heating water can be used for central heating and
DHW heating.
Control unit
The Vitovalor PA2 can be operated with a heat bias
and power-optimised. Using the integral energy man-
ager, operation of the fuel cell module can be config-
ured to optimise on-site consumption.
Cylinder
Different cylinders, such as DHW cylinders or heating
water buffer cylinders, can be connected to the
Vitovalor PA2.

Commissioning
The commissioning and matching of the appliance to
local conditions and building characteristics, as well as
instructing the user in the operation of the system,
must be carried out by your contractor.
As the user of new combustion equipment, you may be
obliged to notify your local flue gas inspector of the
installation [check local regulations]. Your local flue gas
inspector will also inform you [where appropriate]
about work that may have to be carried out on your
combustion equipment (such as regular checks, clean-
ing).
Serial number of internal electricity meter
You will find the serial number of the internal electricity
meter on a label behind the upper front panel: See
page 28.
This information is required when registering the
Vitovalor PA2 with your grid operator.
Your system is preset
Your system is preset at the factory and is therefore
ready for operation following commissioning by your
contractor:
Wintertime/summertime changeover
■This changeover is automatic.
Date and time
■The date and time were set by your heating contrac-
tor.
You can change the settings at any time to suit your
individual requirements.
Power failure
All settings are saved if there is a power failure.
Power generation
Power generation takes place according to the specifi-
cations provided by the integral energy manager. The
start times of the fuel cell module are matched to the
power consumption conditions.

■The largest financial savings will be achieved if the
power generated by the fuel cell module is con-
sumed on site. Whenever possible, do not switch on
large energy consumers (e.g. oven, hairdryer, vac-
uum cleaner, washing machine, tumble dryer) simul-
taneously but after each other.
■Spread the drawing of heat (e.g. DHW consumption)
as evenly as possible over the day. This results in
longer fuel cell module runtimes for power genera-
tion.
■The energy manager optimises the fuel cell module
runtimes subject to power and heat consumption
within the building. Activate the energy manager to
optimise utilisation of power generated on site: See
page 18.

You can change any setting on your system centrally
at the control unit.
The control unit is equipped with a touchscreen. To
input settings and check information, tap the on-screen
buttons.
Standby display
If the controls have not been operated for some time,
the display initially switches to the standby display.

After a few minutes, the illumination is switched off.
Status indicator
Depending on the type of heat generator, a red illumi-
nated strip (Lightguide) is displayed at the lower or
upper edge of the control unit during operation.
Meaning of the display:
■Lightguide pulsates slowly:
Display is in standby mode.
■Lightguide is illuminated constantly:
You are operating the control unit. Every input opera-
tion is confirmed by a brief flashing.
■Lightguide flashes quickly:
There is a fault on the system.

Note
The consumption figures displayed in the energy cock-
pit are not based on metering equipment but instead
are computed values. The calculation takes into
account the existing system components and the user
behaviour (e.g. operating time and utilisation level).
Depending on system-specific parameters (e.g. instal-
lation altitude and type of flue system), differences
may arise between the displayed (computed) and
actual consumption values.
Due to seasonal climate conditions and other factors,
further discrepancies are possible. The Energy cockpit
serves to visualise previous energy flows. It can show
increases and decreases in consumption within spe-
cific comparative periods. It cannot be used as a bind-
ing basis for billing.
Electrical output of the fuel cell module
Electrical output is influenced by the gas quality and
the geodetic head. Electrical output is also reduced by
a decrease in the fuel cell module’s electrical efficiency
over time.
The fuel cell module is operated with constant heat
input (gas input) and constant overall efficiency. This
means that the ratio of electrical output to heating out-
put changes over the service life. As the overall output
remains constant and electrical output decreases over
the service life, heating output increases.

The largest financial savings will be achieved if the
power generated by the fuel cell module is consumed
on site. The energy manager optimises the fuel cell
module runtimes subject to power and heat consump-
tion within the building.
Operation with energy manager
The start times and runtimes of the fuel cell module
are adjusted to the times when you routinely require
power. This increases utilisation of power generated
on site.
You can choose from 2 operating strategies:
■"Ecological": The optimal start point for the fuel cell
module is calculated using specific emission factors
to achieve the lowest possible CO2 emissions.
■"Economical": The optimal start point for the fuel
cell module is determined by the power supply price,
feed-in remuneration and gas price.
When there is no installed electricity meter, the energy
manager refers to a stored standard load profile as the
specific power consumption is unknown.
Operation without energy manager
The start times of the fuel cell module depend only on
the heat demand of the system.
Information on operation with power storage unit:
If the building mains has been disconnected from the
public grid (e.g. power cut), we recommend switching
off the energy manager.

emissions test mode can be enabled. Message lists
are displayed.

2. All functions are disabled. The emissions test mode
can be enabled.

Switching the Lightguide on and off
Depending on the type of heat generator, a red illumi-
nated strip (Lightguide) is displayed at the lower or
upper edge of the control unit during operation.
In the delivered condition, the Lightguide is switched
on. You can switch off the Lightguide.
Meaning of the display:
■Lightguide pulsates slowly:
Display is in standby mode.
■Lightguide is illuminated constantly:
You are operating the control unit. Every input opera-
tion is confirmed by a brief flashing.
■Lightguide flashes quickly:
There is a fault on the system.
