SCOPE OF THIS MANUAL
This Instrucon Manual provides instrucon
for installaon, maintenance, adjustment and
troubleshoong of VRG Controls VGP - Valve
Gas Posioner. This product is typically ulized
in conjuncon with control valves, pneumac
actuators and a variety of other axillary devices
and accessories. For informaon on products
other than those manufactured by VRG Controls,
please consult the appropriate manufacturer.
WARNING:
Only those qualied through training or experience
should install, operate, or maintain VRG Controls
posioners. If there are any quesons concerning
these instrucons, contact your VRG Controls sales
representave, sales oce, or manufacturer before
proceeding.
DESCRIPTION:
The VGP Valve Gas Posioner represents a
breakthrough in Valve Control technology. The VGP
provides a modular, plug & play control system for
use in conjuncon with pneumacally actuated
control valves. The VGP features a simplied 5-in-1
conguraon that provides compability with double
acng and single acng (spring return) control valves
ulizing a single plaorm. The VGP may be easily
recongured in the eld to provide compability
with almost any pneumac control valve on the
market. The highly accurate performance and ZERO
emissions capabilies of the VGP provide the desired
features to meet natural gas industry needs. The VGP
was designed by the inventor of the original “Valve
Gas Posioner” and features patent US 9, 400, 060
B 2 technological advances that provide reliability,
convenience, and performance above and beyond
previous technologies. VGP- Valve Gas Posioners
represent the future of control valve control
technology and are backed up by the industries’ most
experienced team.

of lower poron of the power assembly.

NOTES ON TABLE 1.0:
• ZERO Steady State emissions achieved when
VPC properly adjusted to exhibit factory advised
deadband seng.
• Consumpon is approximate and based upon 100
psig Supply Gas. Atmosphere emissions may be
completely eliminated with Discharge to Pressure
System incorporated.
• Double acng VPC’s require addion of No-Vent
Device to achieve ZERO emissions at full open
and full closed.
SCOPE OF THIS MANUAL
This Instruction Manual provides instruction for instal-
lation, maintenance, adjustment and troubleshooting of
VRG Controls VGP - Valve Gas Positioner. This prod-
uct is typically utilized in conjunction with control valves,
pneumatic actuators and a variety of other axillary de-
vices and accessories. For information on products oth-
er than those manufactured by VRG Controls, please
consult the appropriate manufacturer.

The VGP Valve Gas Positioner represents a break-
through in Valve Control technology. The VGP provides
a modular, plug & play control system for use in con-
junction with pneumatically actuated control valves.
The VGP features a simplied 5-in-1 conguration that

acting (spring return) control valves utilizing a single
platform. The VGP may be easily recongured in the
eld to provide compatibility with almost any pneumatic
control valve on the market. The highly accurate per-

The VGP-SA-BV posioner is a force balanced
instrument that provides a control valve posion
proporonal to a pneumac input signal. In this
case the control valve is set to open on loss of
input signal. The energy to operate the control
valve comes from the dierenal force created
by the pneumac loading on one side of the
cylinder and the opposing actuator spring force.
In steady-state, the force imposed on the balance
beam by the input signal diaphragm and range
spring are equal. When these forces are equal
the balance valves in the top and boom bodies
of the posioner are closed. The posioner will
not feed gas to the actuator cylinder or exhaust
loading pressures from the cylinder. When the
spring force and cylinder force are equal, the
control valve remains in a staonary posion.
An increase in the input signal pressure results in
the opening of the lower balanced valve due to an
imbalance in the beam forces. This increases the
pressure in the cylinder, further closing the valve
and compressing the actuator spring. The actuator
feedback rod stretches the range spring, increasing
its tension. The force from the spring, which opposes
the force on the balance beam created from the
increased input signal, connues to increase unl
the balance beam forces are in equilibrium. At this
point the valve is in the correct posion for the
applied input signal. The sensivity adjustment of
the posioner changes the posioner’s dead band
(the change in input signal necessary to create
a certain amount of change in output signal.

The posioner is a force-balanced instrument that
provides a control valve posion proporonal to

between the supply and discharge pressures. In
steady state, the forces imposed on the balance
beam by the input signal diaphragm and the range
spring are equal; therefore, the top and boom
balance valves in the posioner are at or near their

CLOSE ON INCREASING ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
The VGP-SA-BV posioner comes factory adjusted for
your parcular applicaon. The use of the following
adjustment procedure will only be necessary when
a RUBBER GOODS replacement kit is installed or
any other me the posioner is disassembled.
The VGP-SA-BV posioner has 3 adjustment secons:
1. The ADJUSTMENT DRUM adjusts the dead band.
2. The ADJUSTMENT SCREW adjusts the bias
3. The RANGE SPRING adjusts the span.
Adjustment Drum Sengs
The ADJUSTMENT DRUM seng or “dead band”
seng ne tunes the sensivity of the VGP balance
valves.

Step 1: Turn the dead band ADJUSTMENT DRUM (BB) in
the direcon of decreasing numbers unl it can
no longer turn, then turn the drum 2-3/4 turn in
the opposite direcon (use the numbers on the
drum as a guide).
Step 2: If not already aached, wind 3 to 4 coils of the
RANGE SPRING (F) onto the RANGE SPRING
RETAINER (G).
Step 3: If not already adjusted, set the RANGE SPRING
RETAINER (G) so that it is in the middle of the
stud.
Step 4: Set the instrument signal pressure at the
midpoint of its range. For example, set it at 9
psig if the range is 3-15 psig, or 18 psig if the
range is 6-30 psig. Stroke the actuator to an
intermediate posion.
The VGP-SA-BV positioner comes factory adjusted
for your particular application. The use of the following

point of its range. For example, set it at 9 psig

Step 5A:If the actuator is equipped with a MCV-3 Manual
Control Valve, place the le MCV-3 handle in the
manual posion.
Note: When increasing or decreasing the
instrument signal, the output pressure should
swing up and down respecvely. When changing
direcon of the false instrument signal, the output
pressure should immediately reverse direcon.
Any “bump” or inial reacon of the gauge in
the wrong direcon indicates fricon within the
components of the posioner. In the case where
fricon is a problem the posioner must be
disassembled and rebuilt to eliminate it.
Note: Step 6 should only be used if the posioner
is being used in a bleed to pressure system.
Step 6: Turn the adjustment drum one division (1/4-
1/2 of a number, NOT one full number) in the
direcon of decreasing numbers. Re-aach
exhaust port to pressure system.

Step 5B: If the actuator is not equipped with VMO-150,
use the 1/4” ball block valve installed between
the posioner output and the actuator. Once the
actuator has reached its desired posion (based
on the mid-signal applied to the instrument port
in step d), place the block valve in the closed
posion.
a) Observe the output pressures. Set output
pressure per table 8.0 using the i.0. Turning
the drum in the direcon of increasing
numbers will reduce the output pressure.
Note: Raising the output pressure will reduce
sensivity and bleed gas at steady state.
b) At this point the unit is properly adjusted if
an increase or decrease in the input signal of
0.25 psig causes the output gauge to swing in
either direcon.
If the actuator is equipped with a MCV-3 Manual
Control Valve, place the left MCV-3 handle in
the manual position.
Step 5A:
If the actuator is not equipped with VMO-150,
use the 1/4” ball block valve installed between
the positioner output and the actuator. Once the
actuator has reached its desired position (based
on the mid-signal applied to the instrument port
in step d), place the block valve in the closed
position.
a) Observe the output pressures. Set out-
put pressure per table 8.0 using the i.0.
Turning the drum in the direction of in-
creasing numbers will reduce the output
pressure.
