CAUTION!
Overview
The purpose of this manual is to provide the user with detailed instructions on the proper installation and use
of the Retractable Pit Ladder. This includes:
Hazards associated with the use of this product;
Explanations of the Features and Functions of this product;
Installation and Operation instructions.
After reading this manual, the reader will be able to install and operate the Retractable Pit Ladder in the pit of
an elevator hoistway. Operation of the Retractable Pit Ladder includes extending the ladder off the wall of the
pit, and retracting it back up against the pit wall when not in use.
This ladder complies with ASME A17.1 Code Section 2.2.4.2 for Safe and Convenient Pit Access.
The equipment covered in this manual should only be installed, used, and serviced by qualified personnel
trained in proper work and safety procedures. This manual is intended to assist such trained individuals in
the installation and use of this equipment and is not intended as a substitute for proper training
and experience.
This document or any other information regarding this equipment is not intended to cover all of the possible
situations which may be encountered while using the equipment described herein. Should specific situa-
tions arise which are not covered by the information provided, or should the user desire further details, the
specifics should be directed to Wurtec, Inc.
NOTE: In the effort of continuous product improvement, Wurtec, Inc. reserves the right to modify the design
and specifications of this product at any time without notice.
WARNING!
Do not attempt to climb the ladder while it is retracted
against the pit wall. The Safety Switch does not break
the elevator safety circuit until the ladder has been
extended. Entering the pit while the elevator is oper-
ating can result in serious bodily harm or death.
Climb and descend the ladder in a controlled, deliber-
ate manner. Using the ladder in a haphazard manner
can result in falls from heights in excess of 4 feet,
which can result in serious bodily harm or death.
Always wear proper safety equipment.

DESCRIPTION:
The Retractable Pit Ladder provides an effective means for safely entering the pit of an elevator hoistway. It
collapses to under 2” thick when not in use, and expands to 8” away from the pit wall. The Retractable Pit Lad-
der can be customized to work in a wide variety of pit depths and sizes, and is designed to be installed directly
onto the wall of the pit.
The Retractable Pit Ladder consists of the following components and sub-assemblies:
Ladder Rails
Slip-resistant Rungs
Thread Cutting Screws (to attach the rungs to the rails, 2 per rung)

FEATURES AND FUNCTIONS
Retractable Arms
As the name indicates, the Retractable Pit Ladder has a system of arms which allow the ladder to be ex-
tended or retracted off of the pit wall. The arms are spring loaded to offset the weight of the ladder and
make it easier to retract.
Positive Stop
The Retractable Pit Ladder is held in either position (expanded or retracted) by the Positive Stop
mechanism. It is a spring-loaded handle which, when pulled out, allows you to change ladder
positions. Once you let go of the handle, the
Positive Stop holds the ladder in position.

Safety Switch
A Safety Switch assembly is included with the Retractable Pit Ladder, with the key attached to the side rail of
the ladder and the switch attached to the Wall Mount. When the ladder is in its retracted position, the key is
inserted into the switch to complete the elevator safety circuit. When the ladder is in its extended position, the
key is pulled from the switch and breaks the elevator safety circuit, which prevents the elevator from moving
in the hoistway.
INSTALLATION
Tools and Hardware Needed
3/8” Socket
9/16” Socket
3/16” Hex Key
7/32” Hex Key

SET UP
Ladder Sections
The Ladder Sections for the Retractable Pit Ladder come in 4’ and 6’ increments.
They consist of the following components and quantities:
Size Rungs Rails 3/8” Thread-cutting screws
4’ 4 2 8
6’ 6 2 12
1. Fasten the rungs to the rails using the 3/8-12 X 1.25” Thread-Cutting Screws. Leave out the top
rung on ladder sections that will be attached to another ladder section.
2. Attach the ladder sections and the
shared rung to each other using the
Joint Stiffeners, 3/8” Thread-Cutting
Screws, and ¼-14 X 1/2” Self-Drilling
Screws.

9
16-296
20-102-XX
1. Attach the Wall Mount Assemblies to the ladder using 3/8-16 X 1”
Button Head Cap Screws with a washer between the Tubular Arm
and the ladder rail, and a 3/8-16 Nylon Insert Lock Nut.
This connection should be snug, but the arm should be able to
rotate freely.
2. With the ladder in an extended position, place the bottom of the ladder rails on the floor of the pit, and
push the Wall Mount Brackets against the wall. Fasten the brackets to the wall using ¼” concrete
anchors. The anchors should be embedded into the concrete a minimum of 1-1/4”.

Safety Switch
1. Wire the Safety Switch to the controller per ASME A17.1 (2013) Code.
2. Attach the Switch to the Wall Mount Bracket using the 6-32 X 1.50” Button Head Screws and Serrated
Hex Nuts.
3. With the ladder in a retracted position, insert the key into the switch and press the Key Bracket against
the ladder rail. Attach the key bracket to the ladder rail using the ¼-14 X .50” Self-Drilling Screws

Positive Stop
1. Unscrew the Handle from the Socket Shoulder Screw.
2. Place the Socket Shoulder Screw and compression spring through the 7/8” hole on the inside edge of the
top Retraction Arm closest to the Sill landing.

3. Place the Stopper Channel over the Retraction Arm and screw the Handle back onto the
Socket Shoulder Screw.

13

4. Test the Positive Stop for proper mechanism action by pulling the handle. This should compress the spring and
move the Stopper Channel out to a point where it no longer intersects with the Ladder Rail.
Operation
To toggle the Retractable Pit Ladder between its retracted and expanded states:
1. Pull and hold the handle out to disengage the Positive Stop.
2. Move the ladder to the desired position.
3. Release the handle to engage the Positive Stop.
