NOTE - These directions apply to all silver, green or red single heater Hot Tap showers. Options like the 4 gallon case,
5 gallon soft case and push button piezo ignition may not be on your model. Pump and battery case may differ in appearance than
one illustrated. Hot Tap color may differ to product shown on box or case label.
SET-UP
1. Select a clean flat area clear of leaves, vehicles or other flammable materials. Remove shower system and pump from case. Fill
case with 3 - 4 gallons of water. Remove lid from Zodi 4 gallon hard case by fully opening lid.
2.
Ensure propane gas valve is turned OFF. Connect a new 16.4 oz. propane cylinder to Hot Tap gas valve. Place detached lid on flat
level ground, insert cylinder bottom securely into lid middle cavity (see photo 1). Some models do not have hard cases, these models
use a traditional lantern style round base to secure propane cylinder. Propane must be in a vertical position and safely secured when
operating heater.
3. Load 4 “NEW” Energizer
™
D-cell alkaline batteries into battery case. Check pump operation by holding pump in hand while
pushing red ON/OFF button on battery case. If pump fails to operate check that batteries are good and correctly installed, then turn
pump switch OFF. If pump still fails, remove batteries and bend battery contacts upward to ensure good contact. Squeeze any kinks
from all hoses (low water flows are usually due to weak batteries). If using optinal 12 volt pump connect pump to pump hose.
PUMPING WATER
1. Carefully submerge entire pump in water source (place pump in bottom corner of 4 gallon case to draw as much water as
possible). Turn pump “ON” to establish water flow from shower head (place shower head inside case to conserve water). Water
should flow from shower head within 20 seconds; if not, check for a kinked pump hose or shower hose. If water still fails to spray,
release vapor lock in Hot Tap by applying suction to shower head to initiate water flow
(Heater must be off).
NOTE - In natural water sources DO NOT place the pump directly on sandy lake bottom. Place the pump on top of pebbles or
rocks. Place small rock on wire near pump to prevent tides from pushing pump onto shore.
HEATING
1. Water must always be flowing from shower head when heater is on. AFTER cold water is flowing from Hot Tap shower head,
ignite propane burner on Hot Tap by placing a “lit match” inside small hole on back side of Hot Tap then slowly turn on propane gas
valve (see photo 3). Water MUST be flowing from Hot Tap shower head BEFORE igniting heater and any time heater is operating.
Keep hands, face and clothing clear of top and bottom covers on Hot Tap at all times. In windy conditions, shield system from wind.
On models with piezo push button ignitor, slightly open gas valve while rapidly pushing ignitor 3 times, if systems fails to ignite, turn
gas valve off for 1 minute before reigniting. After ignition, if flames exit top cover, turn gas valve down. Gas cylinders must be in a
vertical position during use and safely secured in propane base when heating.
DO NOT HEAT INDOORS. DO NOT IGNITE OR OPERATE HEATER INSIDE TENTS, RVs, HOMES OR OTHER CONFINED
AREAS. CAUTION: SYSTEM GETS HOT. KEEP CHILDREN CLEAR WHEN OPERATING. USE ONLY OUTDOORS IN WELL
VENTILATED AREAS. THIS DEVICE GENERATES CARBON MONOXIDE WHEN OPERATING. THIS DEVICE GETS VERY HOT
WHEN OPERATING. IMPROPER USE CAN RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH. ZODI OUTBACK GEAR LLC NOT RESPONSIBLE
FOR IMPROPER USE.
NOTE - DO NOT TURN OFF WATER PUMP OR REMOVE WATER PUMP FROM WATER OR RESTRICT PUMP FROM WATER
WHEN HEATER IS ON OR SERIOUS INJURY MAY RESULT. WATER MUST ALWAYS BE FREELY FLOWING FROM SHOWER
HEAD WHEN HEATER IS ON. IF WATER PRESSURE DROPS OR WATER TEMPERATURE SUDDENLY INCREASES DURING
USE, IMMEDIATELY POINT SHOWER HEAD AWAY FROM BODY AND SAFELY TURN OFF PROPANE HEATER. IGNITE
ONLY AFTER PROPER WATER FLOW HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED.
2. Allow system to operate for 1 minute before checking water temperature. If water is too hot, turn down propane valve, wait
another 30 seconds and re-check water temperature. If water is not hot enough recycle water in container by placing the shower
head in the same container as the pump (see photo 4). In only a minute or two, the water spraying from the shower head will be
a comfortable temperature. Adjust temperature with shower head in the position you wish to use it as the water temperature will
change slightly upon raising or lowering the shower head. If flames are visible near top exhaust vent, turn down gas valve.
NOTE: Under certain conditions hotter water can be achieved by turning gas valve down.
SHOWERING
1. Hot Tap is now ready for showering. Stand a safe distance away from the Hot Tap during showering periods. Never have the
shower hose so tight that it may cause the Hot Tap to tip over. Do NOT pollute fresh water sources with soaps, etc. For extra
privacy, use the self-supporting Zodi Hut Shower Enclosure or enjoy hands free showering with our Adjustable Height Shower Pole.
SHUTDOWN
1. Turn off propane gas valve and allow water to flow for 20 more seconds. Shut off water pump. Allow system to cool before
handling (system & handle may be hot). Allow water to drain from hoses and heating coil. Disconnect propane from Hot Tap before
storing system or transporting in vehicle. Remove batteries for season. Place system in case and secure lid. Prevent damage or
puncture to soft cases by wrapping heater (after system has cooled) in a towel before placing inside soft case.

Most problems can be fixed
with a phone call.
Low Water Pressure: Low water pressure is usually due to
weak or incorrectly installed batteries, vapor lock in the
heating coil, or a kinked pump hose or shower hose.
Batteries: New batteries fix virtually all low water pressure
challenges. Sometimes the battery case lid does not close
properly preventing batteries from making contact with the
switch.
If using weak batteries, it may necessary to apply
suction to shower head to initiate water flow
(Heater must be
off). Make sure the contacts inside your battery case are making
a good connection with battery by bending battery contacts up
inside of battery case and on battery case lid.
Vapor Lock: If pump is working, the hoses are not kinked, and
water is still not spraying from the shower head, your system is
vapor locked. Vapor lock can be released by applying suction to
the shower head while pump is on and submerged in water
(Heater must be off).
Pump Screen Filter: The pump is equipped with a removable
debris screen. Unscrew pump cap to clean debris screen. In
natural water sources keep pump clear of mud. In silty water
place pump in a sock to act as a pre-filter or use a water bucket
and allow sediment to settle before use.
Kinked Hoses: Check that pump hose and shower hose
are not kinked. Squeeze kinks from all hoses before use.
Other:
You can increase water pressure by reducing vertical
distance between water source and showerhead. If you are
using the Zodi case for water this can easily be accomplished
by elevating the water case by securely placing water case
on top of ice chest or picnic table.
Condensation: The water you see dripping from the bottom of
the Hot Tap during use is normal, this is condensation and will
occur every time the heater is on.
Low Water Temperature: The Hot Tap Traveler is designed for
average input water of 70°F, but your Hot Tap will easily heat ice
cold water. For use with colder water, fill a 3 - 5 gallon water
container with water and place pump and shower head in the
same container (see Photo 4 Page 4). Turn on the pump and after
water is flowing from the shower head ignite propane burner
(follow directions on page 4). Allow the warm water to recycle
for a few minutes until the water spraying from the shower head
reaches a comfortable temperature. Under normal conditions,
recycling is not needed, but by using this tip you can enjoy a hot
shower regardless of starting water temperature.
New batteries will temporarily provide higher water pressure from
the pump. After 15 minutes the water flow will be slightly lower
and the water temperature will be greater. If you are using the
garden hose adapter adjust water pressure so you get 1 gallon of
water from the shower head in 2 min 30 sec.
Other Tips: For best results use only full cylinders of propane
stored at room temperature. Name brand Propane works best.
Cold and or near empty propane tanks will cause the Hot Tap to
perform poorly. Propane performance will drop above 5,000 ft
and or below freezing temperatures. For best performance
connect your Hot Tap to a 5 gallon BBQ size propane tank with
the optional Zodi bulk tank kit and get up to 40 hours continuous
use (see it now....www.zodi.com).
Under certain atmospheric conditions, the burner will be
difficult to ignite, will not ignite completely or will not stay lit.
Fix this temporary challenge by taping over 1 hole on the air / gas
mixing tube located above the propane valve. This condition
usually occurs in winter months at lower altitudes.
For best performance shield system from wind.
Water must be flowing from Hot Tap before igniting propane burner. Water must always be flowing from Hot Tap when
propane burner is heating.
If water pressure drops, or water temperature increases, immediately point shower head away from body and safely turn off
Hot Tap heater until proper water pressure is regained.
Check that all hoses are free of kinks. Most kinks occur during storage or immediately after use when the hoses are warm.
Do not ignite heater with kinks in pump hose or shower hose.
Do not use system indoors. The Hot Tap, like all propane devices, generates deadly carbon monoxide fumes when
operating. This product is designed for outdoor use only. Do not operate Hot Tap inside boats, RVs, tents, homes or other
confined areas. Use only outdoors in well ventilated areas away from flammable material.
System not designed to heat water over 100°F. System not designed to heat water for consumption.
Allow Hot Tap system to cool before handling. Do not place any items including towels, soap and shampoo on Hot Tap.
Keep children and pets clear when operating. Do not leave system unattended when operating.
Lid must be detached from hard case before securing propane cylinder. To detach lid from case unlatch clasp on case and
fully open lid. Models without the 4 gallon multi-purpose plastic case use a lantern style propane cylinder holder for stability.
Heater must always be secured in a vertical position and on a flat surface clear of flammable materials when heating.
This system uses a high performance heater. When heater is on 100%, you may notice hot spots on Hot Tap housing or
flames near top of system. If flames exit exhaust holes at top of heater, turn down propane valve. Under certain conditions
hotter water can be obtained by turning gas valve down. Do not touch system until cool. Housing color may darken with use.
When heater is on, small water drops caused by condensation will drip from bottom. This is normal, it is NOT leaking.
In colder areas, prevent freeze damage by draining water from system by resting Hot Tap on side for 30 seconds, allowing
water to completely drain from coil and pump. Blowing into shower head will also remove water from coil.
During transport and storage, remove propane tank from system.
Test water temperature before use. If too hot, turn down gas valve. If not hot enough recycle water as defined on page 2.
If using weak batteries, it may necessary to apply suction to shower head to initiate water flow
(Heater must be off).
When using the optional garden hose adapter adjust water pressure to 1 gallon from the shower head in 2 min 30 sec.
Water pressure higher than this will result in cooler water temperatures.
