1. Safety Precautions and Maintenance
For optimum performance of the Mars HD, please read the following
safety precautions carefully:
▶To avoid the risk of fire, do not use the Mars HD near excessive heat
or operate for prolonged periods in direct sunlight.
▶Avoid contact with liquids and exposure to moisture.
▶Use the Mars HD within the specified operating temperature range
of 10°C to 40°C (50°F to 104°F).
▶Always turn the Mars HD off when the system is not in use.
▶Clean the surface of the Mars HD ONLY with an electrostatic dusting
wipe or a soft, slightly damp cloth. DO NOT use liquid cleaners on the
Mars HD. No additional methods of cleaning are recommended or
required.

3. Setting up Your Mars HD
3.1 Getting Started
Take the Mars HD out of the ZOOMAX carrying case. Place the unit on
a stable horizontal surface.
3.2 Unfolding Your Mars HD
Hold the Mars HD in both hands. Pull the arm connected to the
camera head gently to a horizontal position as shown in Figure 1
below.

Holding the base of the unit, gently unfold the Mars HD and the rest
of the way open as shown in Figure 2 below.
Rotate the feet at the base of the unit out as far as they will go. Place
the unit on its base, then rotate the camera head counter-clockwise
90 degrees, as shown in Figure 2 above, and turn the camera lens
toward an object you would like to magnify.
NOTE: The regular position of the camera head is rotated
counter-clockwise 90 °, as shown in Figure 3 below ， so that
the image on the monitor or computer screen will be displayed
correctly. If the position of the camera head is clockwise 90 ° ,
you will need to use the Rotate Function to right the image.

3.3 Charging
The Mars HD is equipped with a built-in battery. To charge the
battery of the unit, plug the supplied power adapter into the unit and
an available power outlet as shown in Figure 4.
4. Guidelines for Use
4.1 General Guidelines
▶Use the Mars HD only on a stable horizontal surface, such as a
solid desk or a table.
▶Only use the power supply provided with the Mars HD. Using any
other power supply will void the warranty and may cause damage to
the unit.
▶To avoid the risk of electrical shock, do not attempt to disassemble
the unit. For service or repair, please contact your distributor to
locate the nearest authorized service center.
▶Before using the Mars HD, charge the battery. A full charge takes

approximately three hours.
4.2 Button Functions (Connected to a Monitor or TV via the
HDMI Port)
4.2.1 Normal Mode
a. Power On/Off: Press and hold the Power button until
you hear a beep to turn the power on or off.
b. LED On/Off: Press LED On/Off button to turn the LED
light on or off.
c. Zoom Control: To zoom in, turn the Zoom knob
clockwise; to zoom out, turn the Zoom knob counter-clockwise.
d. Find Function: Press and hold the Find button on the

camera head and a target will appear in the center of the
screen (see Figure 5).

Move the reading material until you have located the desired
item within the target area. Release the Find button to magnify
the item in the target area as shown in Figure 6.

NOTE: The Find Function is not active when the unit is set
to 2X magnification.
e. Freeze Function: Press the Freeze button to freeze the
current image. The Freeze icon appears on the top left
corner of the screen. Press the Freeze button a second time to
return to the camera’s live view.

f. Focus Lock Function: The focus lock feature is useful when
you do not want the Mars HD to readjust focus based on
movement beneath the camera, such as when you are writing.
To activate the focus lock, press and hold the Freeze button
until you hear a beep, then release it. The Focus Lock icon
will appear on the top left corner of the screen.
NOTE: When the focus lock function active, you can still
adjust the focus manually with the Zoom knob.
g. Exiting Focus Lock Function: Press and hold the Freeze
button , releasing it after you hear one beep. The Focus
Lock icon will disappear and the unit will go back to autofocus.
h. Color Mode Function: Press the Color Mode button to
switch between your four color mode favorites and full color
mode.
i. Factory Reset:Press and hold both the Mode button
and the Find button for 10 seconds to restore the Mars
HD to its original factory settings.
j. Viewing Modes: To change the viewing mode, simply rotate
the camera. There are three types of viewing modes:
Reading view
Distance view
Self view

Reading view Distance view Self view
Reading View
The camera can be pointed down at a surface for reading,
writing and other use. When using this mode, please make sure
that the lens cover is closed and that the material you are
viewing is directly beneath the camera lens.
Tip: If you are reading a thick book under the camera, the
unit may fail to focus on the text. In this case, try elevating
your Mars HD by placing a monitor riser or a large book
under the unit.
Distance View
The camera can be rotated forward 90° from its position for
reading view mode to view people, scenery, signs and other
objects. It is particularly useful when taking notes from the
blackboard in a classroom. When using this mode, please open
the lens cover and point the camera at the objects you wish to
view.

NOTE: The camera can be rotated vertically 330° and
horizontally 180°.
Self View
The camera can be rotated backward 90°from its position for
reading view to provide you with the equivalent of a mirror.
When using this mode, please be sure to keep the lens cover
closed, and adjust the camera toward yourself.
NOTE: The recommended distance range for self view is 25
to 50 cm (10 to 20 inches). If the image is out of focus, you
can refocus it by turning the Zoom knob either direction.
4.2.2 Menu Mode
You can access the menu by pressing and holding the Freeze
button for 5 seconds or until the unit beeps twice. Once the
setup menu shows on screen, turn the Zoom knob to cycle
through the functions and press the Mode button to confirm
and/or enter a sub menu.

a. Brightness Adjustment
Press the Mode button to select this function. A red
brightness slider will show on the screen. Turn the Zoom knob to
increase or decrease the brightness to the desired level, then
press the Mode button again to confirm the setting and return to
the main menu.
The Mars HD will store your brightness setting for each color
mode automatically.
b. Contrast Color Modes
Brightness Adjustment
Contrast Color Modes. 16 different color
combinations are available.
Line Marker/Mask. Available options are single
horizontal or vertical lines, dual horizontal or
vertical lines and horizontal or vertical mask.
Line Marker/Mask Position Adjustment
Line Marker/Mask Width Adjustment
Rotate Function. Rotate the image 180º.

Full color mode is the default color mode, but you can select and
store four favorite contrast color modes from 16 available color
modes.
Press the Mode button to select this function. A color mode
menu, shown in Figure 7, shows on the screen. Turn the Zoom
knob to change the color mode selection. To confirm the selected
color mode as a favorite, press the Mode button. The border
around your selected color mode will disappear. You can deselect
this color mode by pressing the Mode button again. When you
have chosen four color mode favorites, the unit will return to the
main menu.

c. Line Marker/Mask
Press the Mode Button to enter the Line Marker/Mask
menu. Use the Zoom knob to move through the available options:
single horizontal line, dual horizontal lines, single vertical line,

dual vertical lines, horizontal mask, vertical mask and no marker.
The icons representing these options are shown in Figure 8
below.

When you have selected the option you wish to use, press the
Mode button again to enable it and return to the main menu.
d. Line Marker/Mask Position Adjustment
This option is available only when a line marker or mask is
selected. Press the Mode button to activate the position
adjustment mode. Turn the Zoom knob to adjust the position,
then press the Mode button again to confirm it and return to the
main menu.
e. Line Marker/Mask Width Adjustment
This option is available only when a dual line marker or a mask is
selected. Press the Mode button to activate the width
adjustment mode. Turn the Zoom knob to adjust the width of the
marker or mask, then press the Mode button again to confirm
your setting and return to the main menu.

f. Rotate
Press the Mode button to turn the image 180 degrees. To
rotate the image back to the original position, press the Mode
button again.
g. Exit the Menu
Press the Mode button to exit the menu.
NOTE: If your Mars HD is connected to a PC or a Mac, you
cannot activate the menu mode via the buttons. Instead,
you need to use keyboard shortcuts to realize the above
functions in the menu mode. For more information, see
page 22 and page 27.
5. PC Software
5.1 Software Installation
Turn on the computer. Insert the USB flash drive containing the
software into one of the computer’s USB ports. When the contents of
the USB drive are displayed, start the software installation by
double-clicking on “ZoomaxViewer App”which is located in the
“ZoomaxViewer-Windows”folder. This will open the Install Shield
Wizard.

Once the Install Shield Wizard preparation process is finished, the
license agreement dialog will appear. Read the text in the “License
Agreement”dialog box and accept the license agreement by clicking
the “Yes”button.

After clicking “Yes”, the Install Shield Wizard will appear on the
screen. Click “Next” to continue with the installation.
The Install Shield Wizard will present you with two setup type
options, “Complete” and “Custom.” Select “Complete” and then
choose “Next.”

The next dialog indicates that the software is ready to install. Click
the “Install” button.
Once the software has finished installing, click “Finish” to close the
Install Shield Wizard.

5.2 Opening the Software
From the Windows “Start” menu, choose “All Programs” and click on
ZoomaxViewer.exe.
The following screen will appear, which means your software was
successfully installed.
