About the MAX-706
The MAX-706 is an IEEE 802.16e compliant WiMAX
MIMO 2.5 GHz Express card for your computer. It
allows you to access the Internet by connecting to a
WiMAX wireless network.
The MAX-706 uses MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-
Output) antenna technology to deliver high speed
wireless networking.
How It Works
A computer connects to the MAX-706 (A). The MAX-
706 connects wirelessly to a WiMAX base station (B),
which then connects to the Internet, providing you with
seamless access to the world’s content.

Before You Begin
Ensure that you have all the items listed below and that
your computer meets the minimum system
requirements.
What You Need
• The MAX-706 ExpressCard (with a plastic bag)
• Quick Start Guide
• Support Disc containing the User’s Guide and device
driver and utility.
Minimum System Requirements
• Pentium II 300 MHz or above
• An ExpressCard slot compatible with ExpressCard/34
• 50 MB available hard disk space
•32MBRAM
• A CD-ROM drive
• Windows Vista or XP (Service Pack 2 or later)

Install the Utility and Driver
The installation procedures are similar for all supported
Windows versions.
Install the ZyXEL Utility and driver BEFORE inserting
the MAX-706.
1. Insert the included CD into the CD-ROM drive on
your computer. When the autorun screen displays,
click Setup to install the ZyXEL utility and driver.
 If the screen does not display, locate and
double-click autorun.exe on the CD.
2. Select your preferred language and click Next.
Use the Cancel button at any time to stop the
installation, and use the Back button to return to the
previous screen.

3. Click Next again.
4. Select Complete to install the driver and the utility
(recommended). Click Next and continue on to step
6.
Select Custom if you want to install only the driver or
the utility (for example if you are upgrading the utility)
or want to specify an installation folder. Click Next.

5. Click Next to accept the default file location or click
Change to select an alternate folder.
6. Select the features you want to install and click
Next.
7. Click Install to begin the installation.

8. When the installation is complete, click Finish and
go to the next screen.
You will need to restart your computer after installing
the ZyXEL utility. Make sure you have saved your
work before continuing.
9. When the following screen displays, click Finish to
exit the installer and restart your computer.

Install the Hardware
Do not install the hardware until you have installed
the driver and utility from the CD.
1. Locate an available ExpressCard slot on your
computer.
2. With the pin connectors facing
the slot and the side with LEDs
facing up, align and slide the
MAX-706 into the left of slot.
The MAX-706’s PWR LED
(light) turns on after 20
seconds if it is properly inserted.
Never bend, twist or force the MAX-706 into the port.
 If the PWR LED on the MAX-706 is not on after
you have installed the utility and the MAX-706,
remove the MAX-706 and reinsert it.
3. The Found New Hardware screen will appear. Keep
clicking Next until you complete the wizard. This will
install the driver for the MAX-706 hardware.

Connect to a WiMAX Network
You need information provided by your service
provider for this section. If you do not have this
information, check with your service provider.
After you install the
ZyXEL utility, a
ZyXEL utility icon (
) appears in the
system tray and a
ZyXEL MAX-706
screen appears on
your desktop.
 If the icon does not display, click Start >
Programs > ZyXEL > MAX-706 > ZyXEL MAX-
706 Utility.

If the WiMAX Status displays Operational and the
ZyXEL utility icon changes to green , you are already
connected to a WiMAX network. To access the Internet,
open your Internet browser and enter the URL of a web
site in the address bar.
If the WiMAX Status does not display Operational, you
are not connected to a wireless network. Use the
following sections to manually connect to a network.
Configure the Connection
1. Double-click the icon to start the ZyXEL utility.
2. Click the icon on the utility main screen, and then
click Authentication.

3. Enter the information EXACTLY provided by your
service provider for the Internet access in the
screen. Leave the other settings at their default
values unless your service provider gave you
specific instructions. Click Save and click to close
the screen.
4. Import a certificate file given by your service
provider.

If you are not given a certificate file, please go to step
5.
a. Open Internet Explorer and click Tools >
Internet Options.
b. In the Internet
Options dialog box,
click Content >
Certificates.
c. In the
Certificates
dialog box,
click the
Trusted
Root
Certificates
Authorities
tab and then
click
Import.
d. Click Next in the next screen.

e. The
Certificate
Import
Wizard
screen
appears.
Enter the
directory of
your
certificate
file or click
Browse...
to locate it. Then click Next
f. Select where
you want to
store the
certificate.
Leave it as
default if
you don’t
know which
one you
need to
select. Click
Next.

g. Click Finish
in the next
screen.
h. It will
prompt you a successful
window. Click OK to
complete the process.
5. On the main screen of the utility, check the current
status of the WiMAX connection. If you are
connected to a WiMAX network, the status will be
Operational.
 If your MAX-706 cannot connect to a WiMAX
network, make sure there is an available WiMAX
network within range.

 If your MAX-706 can connect to a WiMAX
network but the signal strength is weak, try
moving the MAX-706 to another position.

Uninstall the Utility and Driver
Follow the following steps to uninstall the MAX-706’s
utility and driver on your computer.
1. Click Start > Program > ZyXEL > MAX-706 >
Uninstall ZyXEL MAX-706 Software on your
computer.
2. The following screen appears. Click Yes.
3. Save your work and click Finish to have your
computer restart and complete the process.
