Introduction
The ACCU-CHEK®Spirit Insulin Pump Quick Reference Guide was created to
provide general guidance regarding basic pump operation. It does not replace the
ACCU-CHEK Spirit Pump User Guide, the ACCU-CHEK Pocket Compass software with
bolus calculator User Guide, or the learning program. This guide supplies easy access to
essential information concerning start-up, programming, bolus delivery and various other
functions of your ACCU-CHEK Spirit insulin pump. The Reference Guide addresses the
more commonly used pump functions and should therefore be used as a supplement to
the learning program and the system User Guides.
You are encouraged to refer to the User Guides and learning program for
additional information relating to indications, warnings and precautions, and
pump functions not included in this reference guide.

Insert or Change Battery
A few reminders before you insert or change the battery:
• Make sure your pump is in STOP mode
• Remove or disconnect your infusion set from your body as a safety precaution
• Use a single non-expired 1.5-volt alkaline AA battery in your pump. Consult your
ACCU-CHEK Spirit Insulin Pump User Guide if you are using a rechargeable battery.
Step 1: Remove the battery cover from your insulin pump. Use the battery
key to turn the battery cover counter-clockwise, as shown by the
arrow on the battery cover.
Step 2: Put the battery cover on the positive (+) end of the battery.
Step 3: Insert the battery (with the negative (–) end first) and the battery
cover into the battery compartment.
Step 4: Carefully push the battery and cover in and turn the battery cover
clockwise to tighten it. The battery cover is correctly tightened when the
outside of it is even with the casing. Do not over-tighten the battery cover.
If the battery is installed correctly, your pump will automatically perform its start-up procedure.
Always check that the time and date are set correctly on your pump after changing the battery.

Key Combinations
Menu Key and Up Key
Press the Menu key and Up key at the same time to:
• exit a menu, function or information screen without saving
• loop backward in the menu.
Menu Key and Down Key
Press the Menu key and Down key at the same time to unlock the KeyLock (press and
hold both keys simultaneously until you hear three beeps when in RUN mode or one beep
when in STOP mode).
Up Key and Down Key
Press the Up key and Down key at the same time in the PROGRAM BASAL RATE
PROFILE screen to copy an hourly basal rate to the next hour or hours.

Prepare and Fill the Cartridge
Have the following materials ready:
• insulin at room-temperature to minimize
the formation of air bubbles
• new ACCU-CHEK 3.15 ml plastic cartridge with
protective cap, plunger rod, and filling needle
• antiseptic wipe.
CAUTION: Never reuse a cartridge! This can cause infection and occlusions, and can
drain your pump’s battery.
Step 1: Wash your hands.
Step 2: Set the insulin vial on a hard surface, such as a table.
Step 3: Use the antiseptic wipe to clean the rubber membrane on the vial.
Step 4: Remove the cartridge, the cartridge protective cap, and the filling needle with
its protective cap, from their packaging.

Step 5: Place the filling needle with its protective cap onto the cartridge tip. Make sure
that the connection is tight.
Step 6: Move the plunger rod back and forth two times in the cartridge to distribute
the lubricant.
Step 7: Pull the plunger rod back to fill the cartridge with air.
TIP: In some situations you may want to use partially filled cartridges. To partially fill a
cartridge, pull the plunger back to the desired volume.
Step 8: Remove the protective cap from the needle.
CAUTION: To prevent contamination, do not allow anything to touch the needle!
Step 9: Push the tip of the filling needle into the center of the insulin vial, puncturing the
rubber membrane.
Step 10: Push the plunger rod down so all the air from the cartridge enters the insulin vial.

Step 11: While holding steady pressure against the plunger rod with your
thumb, invert the insulin vial so the filling needle and cartridge are
pointing upwards into the insulin vial. Make sure the tip of the filling
needle stays in the insulin.
Step 12: Slowly release the pressure against the plunger rod and allow the
insulin to flow into the cartridge.
CAUTION: Do not pull the plunger rod while it is moving on its own. This will
cause air bubbles to form.
Step 13: When the plunger stops moving, slowly pull the plunger rod straight down to
completely fill the cartridge.
TIP: If you are partially filling the cartridge, slowly pull the plunger rod straight down until
the desired volume has entered the cartridge.
Step 14: Tap the cartridge to dislodge and remove any air bubbles.

Step 15: Push the air bubbles back into the insulin vial by depressing the plunger rod.
TIP: You will know that you have filled the cartridge correctly when there are no air
bubbles in the cartridge and the plunger touches the bottom of the cartridge.
Step 16: Remove the filling needle from the insulin vial.
Step 17: Place the protective cap onto the filling needle.
Step 18: Turn the plunger rod counter-clockwise to remove it from the plunger.
Step 19: Remove the filling needle with its protective cap from the cartridge
by twisting counter-clockwise.
Step 20: Tightly push the cartridge protective cap onto the cartridge tip
until it clicks.
CAUTION: Do not pull the plunger rod as you remove it.

Connect Insulin Cartridge, Adapter, and Infusion Set
Have the following materials ready:
• filled 3.15 ml plastic cartridge
• ACCU-CHEK Spirit adapter
• new ACCU-CHEK infusion set.
Step 1: Remove the protective cap from the plastic cartridge.
CAUTION: To prevent contamination, make sure that you do
not touch the plastic cartridge tip.
Step 2: Push the adapter all the way onto the cartridge tip to the stop (a).
Step 3: Hold the adapter and twist the infusion set luer-lock
connection by hand, clockwise into the adapter (b).
Step 4: Carefully prepare a new ACCU-CHEK infusion set for use, priming and insertion,
following its instructions for use.
CAUTION: Do not over-tighten.

Insert Insulin Cartridge
Have the following materials ready:
• ACCU-CHEK Spirit insulin pump
• filled 3.15 ml plastic cartridge with an ACCU-CHEK adapter
• new ACCU-CHEK infusion set connected.
Step 1: Put your insulin pump in STOP mode (select STOP YOUR ACCU-CHEK
screen and press Check key to confirm setting).
Step 2: Press the Menu key to move to the CHANGE THE CARTRIDGE screen.
Step 3: Press the Check key to select.
Step 4: Press and hold the Check key for 3 seconds until you hear a melody. The
piston rod will move backward.
CAUTION: Do not touch or disturb the piston rod while it is rewinding. Doing so
may potentially damage your pump.
Step 5: When the piston rod has returned completely, the pump will display the
CARTRIDGE VOLUME screen and the maximum cartridge volume (315 units).

Step 6: Hold your insulin pump upright. Hold the new filled cartridge so that the
connected adapter and infusion tube set point upwards, parallel,
and close to the cartridge compartment.
CAUTION: Make sure that the bottom edge of the
colored part of the adapter is level with the top
of the plastic cartridge compartment.
Step 7: While continuing to hold the cartridge in
position, press or scroll the Up key or
Down key to move the plunger rod
forward until the base plate of the piston rod is level
with the bottom of the plastic cartridge plunger.
The plastic cartridge volume on the display will decrease accordingly.

Step 8: Position your insulin pump upright (with the adapter pointing upwards). Insert the
cartridge into the cartridge compartment. Twist (don’t push) the adapter clockwise
until it sits flush with the cartridge compartment.
CAUTION: • Do not over tighten the adapter.
• If the end plate of the piston rod doesn’t sit flush against the cartridge
plunger, remove the plastic cartridge from the compartment.
Repeat Steps 7 and 8 until the plastic cartridge is correctly inserted.
Then go to Step 9.
Step 9: Press the Check key to confirm that the plastic cartridge has been inserted
correctly. Your insulin pump will perform its self-test procedure automatically.
CAUTION: Check to see that the infusion set luer-lock connector is still connected
correctly to the adapter.
When the start-up procedure is finished, the PRIME THE INFUSION SET screen is displayed
on your pump.

Prime Infusion Set
After your pump has completed the start-up procedure for changing the plastic cartridge, the
pump will prompt you to prime the infusion set.
CAUTION: Never prime an infusion set that is connected to your body.
Step 1: If your pump times out, press the Menu key to move to the PRIME THE
INFUSION SET screen.
Step 2: Press the Check key to select. The 25 unit priming amount will
be displayed.
Step 3: Press and hold the Check key until the pump plays a melody and the piston
rod moves forward.
Step 4: The priming process will start now, and a count-up is displayed. Your insulin pump
will automatically stop priming after 25 units.
Step 5: When the priming process is finished, your insulin pump will return to STOP mode.

Prime Infusion Set continued
TIP: Your infusion tubing set is properly primed when there are no air bubbles visible in
the tubing and a drop of insulin has come out of the connector or cannula. You can
stop the priming process at any time by pressing any key on your pump. When you
do this, your pump returns to STOP mode.
To display the remaining cartridge content, press the Check key from the RUN screen or
STOP screen.

Change Infusion Set
Have these materials ready:
• ACCU-CHEK Spirit insulin pump
• antiseptic wipe for your skin
• new ACCU-CHEK infusion set.
Step 1: Put your insulin pump in STOP mode (select STOP YOUR ACCU-CHEK
screen and press Check key to confirm setting).
CAUTION: Always remove the infusion set from your body before removing it from
your pump.
Step 2: Remove the used infusion tube set from the headset.
Step 3: Remove the infusion tube set from the adapter. Dispose of it properly.
Step 4: Carefully prepare a new ACCU-CHEK infusion set according to
manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 5: Turn the infusion set clockwise into the adapter.

Step 6: Prime the infusion set according to manufacturer’s instructions.
CAUTION: Never prime an infusion set that is connected to your body.
Step 7: Insert the infusion set needle or cannula according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 8: Remove the old infusion headset. Dispose of it properly.
Step 9: Put your insulin pump into RUN mode.

Set Time and Date
Step 1: Press the Menu key to move to SET TIME AND DATE.
Step 2: Press the Check key to select.
Step 3: Press or scroll the Up key or Down key to set the hour.
Step 4: Press the Menu key to move to SET MINUTE.
Step 5: Press or scroll the Up key or Down key to set the minute.
Step 6: Press the Menu key to move to SET YEAR.
Step 7: Press or scroll the Up key or Down key to set the year.
Step 8: Press the Menu key to move to SET MONTH.
Step 9: Press or scroll the Up key or Down key to set the month.
Step 10: Press the Menu key to move to SET DAY.
Step 11: Press or scroll the Up key or Down key to set the day.
Step 12: Press the Check key to save and exit.
