2.1 Safety instructions
DANGER
The strong magnetic fields (even when the module is switched
off) can interfere with electronic devices, e.g. heart pacemakers,
or impair their function.
Persons with a heart pacemakers must keep a safety distance
of at least 50 cm.
No modifications may be made to the ES Electric Slide that are not described in this in-
stallation manual or have been approved in writing by Afag Automation AG. Afag Auto-
mation AG will assume no liability for any unauthorised modifications or for improper
erection, installation, operation, maintenance or repair.
2.2 Transport, handling, storage
The following values must be observed during transport and storage:
Storage temperature: 0-50°C
Humidity: < 90%, non-condensing
CAUTION
Take care when packing and unpacking the ES Electric Slides!
Careless handling of the electric slide can result in fingers be-
ing crushed as the electric slide can move back and forth when
loose!
The slide is transported in the transport packaging from Afag Automation AG.
If the packaging from Afag Automation AG is not used, the electric slide must be packed
so that it is protected against impact and dust.
The electric slides must be stored dry in the transport packaging.
The electric slides weigh from 0.1 to 0.4 kg (depending on stroke length).
NOTE
Please note!
A safety information sheet is included with each module. This infor-
mation sheet must be read by every person involved with the mod-
ule.

2.3 Description of the electric slide
The ES Electric Slides are used in automation systems and are intended exclusively for
the movement of workpieces.
The ES Electric Slides are intended exclusively for operation with original LinMot compo-
nents (controllers, cables, etc.). Use for any other purpose does not constitute an intend-
ed use.
The intended use also includes compliance with the prescribed installation and removal
instructions, the service and maintenance conditions and observance of the specifica-
tions in the data sheets.
Pay attention to magnetic fields!
DANGER
The strong magnetic fields (even when the module is switched
off) can interfere with electronic devices, e.g. heart pacemakers,
or impair their function.
Persons with a heart pacemaker must keep a safety distance of
at least 50 cm.
2.4 User instructions
The ES Electric Slides are built to the state-of-the-art and the generally accepted safety
regulations and may only be used
For the intended purpose
In an operationally safe condition

Installation and commissioning only by qualified personnel in accordance with the instal-
lation manual.
2.5 Observe the notes in the operating manual!
A precondition for the safe handling and problem-free operation of the ES Electric Slides
is the knowledge of the fundamental safety regulations.
All persons involved in the installation, commissioning, maintenance and operation of the
ES machines must have read and understood the complete operating manual, in particu-
lar the chapter "Safety instructions".
Furthermore, the rules and regulations on accident prevention applicable at the place of
installation/operation must also be observed. Improper use may result in dangers to the
life and limb of the operator or third parties and in impairments to the machine or other
assets.
In the event of faults that could impair safety, the machine must be switched off immedi-
ately and secured to prevent restarting. The fault must then be remedied.
All work on the machines must be carried out with the machines depressurised and dis-
connected from the electrical power supply.
For the operation of the machines, the user must provide safety hoods, safety doors or
other safety precautions conforming to the normal safety guidelines and safety standards
which prevent people from entering or remaining in the working area of the machines
during operation. The machines may only be put into operation when the guards are se-
curely closed.

ES8-ES12-BA vers. 1.3 en. 20190311 9
2.6 Protection against dangerous movements
Dangerous movements can occur if drives are actuated incorrectly. The drive compo-
nents are monitored so that a malfunction can be effectively ruled out. For reasons of
personal safety, the risk of injury and the risk of material damage, however, this must not
be relied on completely. Faulty drive movements must be expected until installed moni-
toring devices become active.
2.7 Installation, connection
WARNING
The ES Electric Slides are set in motion by the electric control
system. If the Electric Slides cannot move freely, there is a risk
of injury and crushing in conjunction with attachments.
If attachments on the Electric Slides can pose a hazard in con-
junction with the moving slides or the superstructures, a corre-
spondingly safe operation must be ensured.
WARNING
Due to the decentralised control unit, the operator of the Elec-
tric Slide is not necessarily alongside the product and can
therefore endanger other persons in other areas.
For work at the Electric Slides, turn off the control unit of the
module and secure it against unintentional restarts. Signals
from the control unit can lead to unintentional movements of
the module, which can cause injuries.

10 ES8-ES12-BA vers. 1.3 en. 20190311
CAUTION
The ES Electric Slide is a partially completed machine.
For safe operation, the ES Electric Slide must be integrated into
the safety concept of the plant in which it is installed.
Measures must be taken to ensure that the operating personnel
cannot enter the working area of the ES Electric Slides during
operation.
Depending on the version and the installation, there is an addi-
tional safety risk, e.g. of pinching fingers!
The ES Electric Slide may only be used for its intended pur-
pose.
Measures must be taken to ensure that the operator cannot en-
ter the working area of the ES Electric Slide during normal op-
eration. This can be achieved by suitable protective measures
such as enclosures, light barriers or de-energisation of the
drive.

2.8 Mounting Instructions
The ES8 and ES12 Electric Slides can be installed in a horizontal position as no load
compensation for vertical installation is intended. A vertical installation position may be
possible upon consultation. The mounting holes (M3 for ES8) and (M4 for ES12) are po-
sitioned on the base element. The slide contains mounting holes with the sizes M2.5 and
M3 (for ES8) and M4 (for ES12). Use the centring sleeves included in the scope of sup-
ply.

The series of the ES Electric Slides is intended for jerk-free linear movement of firmly
installed loads in non-explosive atmospheres and under the ambient and operating
conditions defined for these modules. We generally recommend that ES8 and ES12
Electric Slides are installed in a horizontal position. A vertical installation should only by
considered upon consultation with AFAG Automation AG and when using a weight com-
pensation via a spring (not included as standard).
NOTE
This installation manual must be read carefully before any work on or
with the ES Electric Slide. The ES Electric Slide may only be used
for its intended purpose.

2.16 Programming the ES Electric Slides
CAUTION
Commissioning of ES Electric Slides should be done in setup or
step mode. Incorrect programming can trigger an uncontrolled
movement of the ES Electric Slides. Quick or unintended
movements of the module can lead to injuries and property
damage.
Programming varies depending on the control unit used. Observe the respective manuals
of the provider of the control unit.
WARNING
When the key data is entered incorrectly in the PLC, it is possi-
ble that the ES Electric Slide will slam into the stop at full
speed. This could lead to injuries caused by flying parts.
The ES Electric Slide can perform unexpected movements when
the path measuring system fails or an end switch cable is de-
fective.
This could lead to injuries of personnel working nearby.
WARNING
The plant installer is responsible for securing the plant with a
safety fence to ensure that persons will not be harmed when the
plant is being operated.
