1. Introduction
Thank you for your purchase. Follow the instructions in this manual for safe use of this axial heater.
Following proper operation and maintenance will help to keep the axial heater running in optimal
condition.
Keep this manual handy for frequent reference and to review with new personnel. A sign-off form is
provided on the inside front cover for your convenience. If any information in this manual is not
understood or if you need additional information, please contact AGI or your representative for
assistance.
This manual should be regarded as part of the equipment.

1.2. Intended Use
The axial heater is intended for use as listed below and described throughout this manual. Use in any other way
is considered contrary to the intended use and is not covered by the warranty.
The axial heater should be operated, maintained, serviced, and repaired only by persons who are familiar with
its particular characteristics and understand the relevant safety procedures.
Accident prevention regulations and all other generally recognized regulations on occupational health and
safety must be observed at all times.
Any modifications made to the axial heater may relieve the manufacturer of liability for any resulting damage or
injury.
Intended use for the axial heater:
• Designed for drying of farm crops.
• Use outdoors only.
1.2.1 Misuse
Do not install/use the axial heater for/with:
• applications other than as a heater for drying farm crops.
• heating buildings, sheds, barns, etc.
• finely milled grain dust.

2. Safety
2.1. Safety Alert Symbol and Signal Words
This safety alert symbol indicates important safety messages in this manual. When you see
this symbol, be alert to the possibility of injury or death, carefully read the message that
follows, and inform others.
Signal Words: Note the use of the signal words DANGER,WARNING,CAUTION, and NOTICE with the safety
messages. The appropriate signal word for each message has been selected using the definitions below as a
guideline.
Indicates an imminently hazardous situation that, if not avoided, will result in serious injury or
death.
Indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could result in serious injury or death.
Indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury.
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation that, if not avoided, may result in property damage.
2.2. General Safety Information
Read and understand all safety instructions, safety decals, and manuals and follow them when operating or
maintaining the equipment.
• Owners must give instructions and review the information initially and annually with
all personnel before allowing them in the work area. Untrained users/operators
expose themselves and bystanders to possible serious injury or death.
• Use for intended purposes only.
• Do not modify the axial heater in any way without written permission from the manufacturer and is not
covered by the warranty.
• Follow a health and safety program for your worksite. Contact your local occupational health and safety
organization for information.
• Follow applicable local codes and regulations.

2.3. Heater Safety
Fire and explosion hazards, as well as carbon monoxide poisoning could occur if the heater is
misused. To avoid serious injury or death:
• Shut off and lock out or disconnect power and close valve at
gas source before inspecting or servicing the heater, or when
not in use.
• Do not operate the heater if not properly connected to an
aeration fan.
• Use the heater only with the gas types intended, connecting
alternate fuel sources to the heater can result in fires.
• Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and
liquids in the vicinity of this or any other appliance.
• Do not remove covers, touch, or service internal components
during operation.
• After burner shutoff, allow the fan to run for five minutes
before removing cover(s).
• Do not use the heater where a high concentration of grain
dust, such as milled grain dust or, flammable liquids or vapors
exist
• Never allow anyone to enter the grain bin when a fan and
heater is operating. Gases given off by the burner (including
carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide) could cause death.
• Never use the heater to heat a building, shed, barn, etc.
because of the hazards posed by the flame and by the output
of carbon monoxide.
2.4. Gas Leak Hazards
If You Smell Gas:
• Turn off gas at the source if possible.
• Do not try to light or relight any appliance.
• Extinguish any flames and remove any sources of ignition from the vicinity of the bin.
• Do not touch any electrical switch.
• Evacuate all personnel from the vicinity of the source of the smell.
• Immediately call your gas supplier. Follow the gas supplier’s instructions.
• If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department.

2.5. Grain Bin Fires
To Prevent Fires:
• Use the heater for its intended use only.
• Ventilate, purge all contaminates, and allow burner, and drying areas to cool inside the
heater, in the heater area and the grain bin before any persons enter these areas.
• Keep the maximum plenum temperature not more than the maximum set point
temperature.
• It is not recommended that this heater be installed or combined with products from other
brands/manufacturers. The design and safety features may not be compatible.
• Grain dust is a fire hazard. Keep all areas (including areas under the perforated floors) free
from dust and fines.
• Screen grain before it goes into a bin to help prevent dust buildup. Using a grain spreader
will help distribute dust/fines.
• Ensure that floor supports don’t block transitions.
• Use the fan to ventilate the bins before igniting the heater. This will reduce the risk of a fire
or explosion from leaking fuel.
• Make certain a qualified electrician wires the components.
In the Event of a Fire:
• Never enter a bin that is on fire. Grain fires can cause serious injury or death.
• Shut off gas at the source. Shut off the fan. Call the fire department.
• Clear everyone out of the work area.
• Seal the fan inlet and any other opening to smother the fire.
• Remove the fan and heater from the transition. Sandbag the transition opening. Flood the
bottom of the bin with water up to about 4” (10 cm) above the perforated floor. This will
protect the floor supports and may help extinguish the fire.
• Direct water toward the source of the fire. If a fire is in the upper portions of the bin, insert
a long pipe with small holes into the grain and deliver water to the source of the fire. Doing
so may help confine the fire, but extinguishing a grain bin fire with water is unlikely to occur.
Emptying the bin is almost always necessary.
• Take note of neighboring structures and fuel tanks, cool them down if necessary.
• Remove all grain from the bin to reach the fire.
• Do not cut holes in the bin to remove the grain. Stay clear of flowing grain, it can bury a
person.
• Grain smoulders for days. Do not restart the fan until all grain has been removed from the
fire area.

2.6. Drives and Lockout/Tagout Safety
Inspect the power source(s) before using and know how to shut down in an emergency.
Whenever you service or adjust your equipment, make sure you shut down your power
source and gas supply and follow lockout and tagout procedures to prevent inadvertent
start-up and hazardous energy release. Know the procedure(s) that applies to your
equipment from the following power sources.
For example:
WARNING
• De-energize, block, and dissipate all sources of hazardous energy.
• Lock out and tag out all forms of hazardous energy.
• Ensure that only 1 key exists for each assigned lock, and that you are the only one that holds that key.
• After verifying all energy sources are de-energized, service or maintenance may be performed.
• Ensure that all personnel are clear before turning on power to equipment.

2.7. Personal Protective Equipment
The following Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be worn when operating or maintaining the
equipment.
Work Gloves
• Wear work gloves to protect your hands from sharp and rough edges.
2.8. Safety Equipment
The following safety equipment should be kept on site.
Fire Extinguisher
• Provide a fire extinguisher for use in case of an accident. Store in a highly visible and
accessible place.
First-Aid Kit
• Have a properly-stocked first-aid kit available for use should the need arise, and
know how to use it.
2.9. Safety Decals
• Keep safety decals clean and legible at all times.

• Replace safety decals that are missing or have become illegible. See decal location figures that follow.
• Replaced parts must display the same decal(s) as the original part.
• Replacement safety decals are available free of charge from your distributor, dealer, or factory as applicable.
2.9.1 Decal Installation/Replacement
1. Decal area must be clean and dry, with a temperature above 50°F (10°C).
2. Decide on the exact position before you remove the backing paper.
3. Align the decal over the specified area and carefully press the small portion with the exposed sticky backing
in place.
4. Slowly peel back the remaining paper and carefully smooth the remaining portion of the decal in place.
5. Small air pockets can be pierced with a pin and smoothed out using the decal backing paper.
2.9.2 Safety Decal Locations and Details
Replicas of the safety decals that are attached to the axial heater and their messages are shown in the figure(s)
that follow. Safe operation and use of the axial heater requires that you familiarize yourself with the various
safety decals and the areas or particular functions that the decals apply to, as well as the safety precautions
that must be taken to avoid serious injury, death, or damage.

3.2. Control Box Assembly
Important
The power “IN” to the heater control box comes from the axial fan - this must be wired such that there
is no power to the heater unless the fan is running.

4. Installation
Before continuing, ensure you have completely read and understood this manual’s
Safety section, in addition to the safety information in the section(s) below.
4.1. Installation Safety
• All installation and servicing operations are to be carried out by a qualified technician.
• The equipment shall be installed in accordance with applicable local codes and regulations.
• Do not take chances with safety. The components can be large, heavy, and hard to handle.
Always use the proper tools, rated lifting equipment, and lifting points for the job.
• Always have two or more people installing the axial heater.
• Make sure you have sufficient lighting for the work area.
• Tighten all fasteners according to their specifications. Do not replace or substitute bolts,
nuts, or other hardware that is of lesser quality than the hardware supplied by the
manufacturer.
4.2. Check Shipment
Inspect the axial heater and accessories on receipt to ensure that all items have arrived and that none are
damaged.
Report missing or damaged parts immediately to ensure that proper credit is received from AGI or your
distributor/dealer, and to ensure that any missing parts can be shipped quickly to avoid holding up the
installation.
Important
Do not use damaged components.
4.3. Requirements for Canada
• “The equipment shall be installed in accordance with the Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, CSA
B149.1 and the Propane Storage and Handling Code, CSA B149.2, or applicable provincial regulations, which
should be carefully followed in all cases. Authorities having jurisdiction should be consulted before
installations are made”.
• Electric disconnect switch having adequate ampacity (if not provided as part of the dryer) shall be installed
in accordance with the Canadian Electric Code. Part 1, CSA C22.1.

4.4. Electrical Connection
• Do not bypass or remove the heater/fan motor interlock that prevents the heater from
starting if the fan is not running. Doing so could result in a fire and injury.
• Make certain the heater is wired/interlocked to the fan motor controls.
• Never plug the heater into a separate power source than the fan.
• Make absolutely certain the heater is connected to the fan motor control box so the fan
interlock will operate.
Installation Notes
• The heater control box requires 3-wire single phase power - 120V “hot” L1, 0V neutral L2, and ground.
• The heater power source must be electrically interlocked to the fan to ensure operation only when the fan is
running.
• AGI recommends that all fan/heaters are connected to a ground rod. Check previously installed units for
proper grounding.
• The customer is responsible for supplying the materials and labor to install:
– A properly-sized lockout type disconnect box with fuse or breaker protection for EACH fan and add-on
heater.
– Properly-sized service line.
– Proper grounding protection.
– Wire the heater into the fan control box so the interlock will prevent the heater from operating without
the fan ON.
Important
When installing new wires, replace wires with the original wire type supplied with this fan/heater.
Always replace wires with original type and/or an equivalent wire type.
