Albalá Ingenieros | Manual DEF2008C01
1. DESCRIPTION
1.1. The DEF2008C01
The ADF2008C01, DAF2008C01, DDF2008C01 and DEF2008C01 modules have been
designed to provide analog and digital audio inputs and outputs to TL2000 line terminal
digital video modules. Thanks to these inputs and outputs it is possible to convert a
frame synchronizer such as the HFS2000C01 into an embedder or de-embedder of
analog or digital audio.
In order to provide this functionality the backplane of the UR2000 mounting frame has
the AUDIOCHAIN bus, which is a pair of connection lines between adjacent slots for
transportation of up to 16 audio channels in one direction and 16 channels in the other
direction between two or more modules located in adjacent slots.
The DEF2008C01 includes a total of eight AES/EBU digital audio interfaces that can be
configured as eight inputs, as eight outputs or four outputs with one reference input
each.
The module includes a matrix that allows any assignment of audio signals between the
AUDIOCHAIN and the AES/EBU inputs/outputs as well as gain controls to adjust the level
of each channel in the AES/EBU streams.
When the DEF2008C01 is used for insertion of audio into the bus the asynchronous
sampling rate converters (ASRC) can be activated for each one of the inputs. When the
DEF2008C01 is used for transmission via the AES/EBU interfaces the audio from the bus
does not normally need sampling rate conversion, however if it is needed then the
ASRC's can be activated for four of the outputs and in this case the other four AES/EBU
interfaces in the connector are used as reference inputs for the ASRC's.
It is possible to monitor the DEF2008C01 status remotely using a communications
controller module installed in the same mounting frame. In addition, certain controller
modules provide SNMP management and the ability to record events in a file including
date and time information for further analysis.
The DEF2008C01 is a TL2000 terminal line module and can be housed in a two rack unit
(2 RU) UR2000 mounting frame.

The front panel has not been designed to support mechanical stress. All cabling in the
rack where the mounting frame is located should be properly supported so that the front
panel does not provide mechanical support.
3.5.1. Digital audio connections
The digital audio input and output interfaces use female 25-pin Sub-D type
connectors which are transformer balanced with an impedance of 110Ω.
For digital audio connections 110Ω characteristic impedance, two-wire shielded cable
is preferred. The GND terminal allows connection of the cable shield.

4. OPERATION
This section describes the significance of the front panel indicators of the DEF2008C01
module and their remote control and monitoring ability.
4.1. Front panel description
The appearance of the front panel and the elements it contains are shown in the
following illustration.
Front panel of the DEF2008C01
In addition to the connectors previously described in the Interconnection section the
front panel includes the following indicators and controls:
In the STATUS box:
INP.: This LED lights up in green to indicate that the levels of all the audio channels
being sent to the AUDIOCHAIN from the AES/EBU audio inputs are correct.
It lights up in red to indicate that one or more inputs are faulty, either because
there is no signal on them or because they are unlocked. It also light s up in red if
the sample rate converters are used and no signal is detected on the lines that
are used as reference inputs.
15

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual DEF2008C01
BUS: This LED lights up in green to indicate that activity has been detected in the
control signals of the AUDIOCHAIN and the system has synchronized to them.
It lights up in red when no signals or detected or when the system cannot sync to
them.
4.2. Functional description
The DEF2008C01 is an auxiliary TL2000 line terminal module that includes eight digital
audio interfaces through which AES/EBU streams can be received for delivery to modules
located in adjacent slots or the AES/EBU streams from adjacent modules can be
transmitted.
The backplane of the UR2000 mounting frame provides lines that interconnect between
adjacent modules. Of these lines, the four that are used to pass audio between the
modules are referred to as the (Daisy Chain Audio Bus), or AUDIOCHAIN.
The module located in the slot farthest to the left of the mounting frame functions as
the master of the AUDIOCHAIN and generates the clock for audio signals that the other
modules connected to this bus synchronize to.
Using the AUDIOCHAIN, 16 channels of audio can be transmitted in one direction while
16 more channels of audio can be transmitted simultaneously in the other direction.
Each module connected to the AUDIOCHAIN can pass the audio channels being
transmitted in either direction or can replace them with the audio channels present at
that module inputs, if there are any. This can be configured channel-by-channel.
The 16 audio channels being transmitted in each direction are labeled R2L (Right to Left)
and L2R (Left to Right).
When the task at hand is to embed or de-embed audio into or from a video signal the
equipment acting as the master for the AUDIOCHAIN is an SDI video processor and the
audio front-ends (DAF2008C01, ADF2008C01, DDF2008C01 or DEF2008C01) operate as
slaves. However it is also possible to use a DAF2008C01, ADF2008C01, DDF2008C01 or
DEF2008C01 audio front-end modules as bus masters in order to convert analog audio
to AES/EBU digital format or vice-versa, or to create small audio switching matrices with
a reduced footprint.
Various types of audio front ends can be installed in adjacent slots in order to perform
complex tasks such as simultaneous embedding and de-embedding of analog and
digital signals into/from the same video signal.
In addition to the switching matrix that allows assignment of audio signals between the
AUDIOCHAIN and the AES/EBU input and output interfaces, the DEF2008C01 includes
signal level adjustment and signal level indicators for the AES/EBU interfaces.
The following figure shows a simplified diagram of the functionality of the DEF2008C01.
L2R IN,L2R OUT,R2L IN and R2L OUT are the lines from AUDIOCHAIN that carry the 16
channels of multiplexed audio. AES/EBU AUDIO IN/OUT are the eight AES/EBU input and
output interfaces of the module.
16

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual DEF2008C01
The DEF2008C01 can be configured to provide eight AES/EBU inputs or eight AES/EBU
outputs.
4.3. The AES/EBU inputs
The AES/EBU inputs of the DEF2008C01 can be IN1 to IN8.
If the equipment that generates the audio received by the DEF2008C01 provides an
input reference then it is possible to synchronize that equipment with the audio from
the AUDIOFLEX bus. In this case the sampling frequency converters (ASRC's) are not
necessary. In cases where one or more of the AES/EBU inputs are not synchronized to the
AUDIOFLEX bus audio, an ASRC can be activated independently for each input.
The DEF2008C01 includes detection of signal presence and signal sync for each input.
The presence detector includes format validation as per EBU Tech. 3250-E with or
without parity verification. The sync detector allows verification that the sampling
frequency of the streams being received is synchronized to the internal sampling
frequency of the module.
The streams inserted into the AUDIOCHAIN bus are continuous even if AES/EBU signals
received are not synchronized and the asynchronous sampling rate converter (ASRC) has
not been enabled. In order to achieve this audio samples may be deleted or duplicated
before insertion and the status channel of the AES/EBU remains intact.
The DEF2008C01 has two operating modes when the input signal is absent: it can stop
inserting the audio stream into the AUDIOCHAIN or, by default, it can generate and
insert a stream containing silence.
17

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual DEF2008C01
The two AES/EBU input stream channels can be connected to any of the 16 channels in
the AUDIOCHAIN independently and in either direction.
4.4. The AES/EBU outputs
The AES/EBU outputs of the DEF2008C01 can be OUT1 to OUT8.
The channel from the AUDIOCHAIN being sent to each of the two AES/EBU stream
channels can be controlled independently. The status channel used for both channels of
the output stream is unique and will come from the left channel.
By default the AES/EBU outputs delivered by the DEF2008C01 are synchronized to the
AUDIOCHAIN bus audio. If the outputs need to be synchronized to an external AES/EBU
reference signal then an ASRC can be activated independently for each pair of outputs. In
this case the interfaces IN1 to IN4 operate as reference inputs for the outputs OUT1 to
OUT4 while the outputs OUT5 to OUT8 become unavailable because they share
terminals in the same connector with IN1 to IN4.
Any of the 16 channels in the AUDIOCHAIN can be carried independently in either
direction by each of the AES/EBU output stream channels.
If reception of any the channels from the AUDIOCHAIN that make up a stream stops
then silence is inserted in that stream. If reception stops for both channels then the
module will continue to output a stream of silence or cut off the output signal,
depending upon the selected configuration.
4.5. Level gain and measurement
The DEF2008C01 provides gain adjustment for each audio channel that enters or leaves
the module. The adjustment margin ranges from +24dB to -39dB as well as mute. The
DEF2008C01 also displays information about the level of each audio channel after
application of the gain adjustment.

4.6. Module remote control and supervision
The DEF2008C01 requires remote control for configuration.
In order to perform remote configuration and supervision of the module an optional
TL2000 family remote communications controller must be installed in the mounting
frame.
The main function of the communications control module is to interface between a
10/100 Ethernet port and the internal bus of the mounting frame. The following
illustration shows the most common control situations: from a computer or control
panel via Ethernet.
Certain communications control modules provide additional, more advanced functions
such as an SNMP agent, logging of status changes of the modules and a Web interface
for remote control, etc.
Software for simple configuration and supervision with a GUI for multiple modules can
be downloaded from the Albalá Ingenieros website.
19

Albalá Ingenieros | Manual DEF2008C01
The following functions of the DEF2008C01 can be performed remotely:
-Selection of the operating mode: eight inputs, eight outputs or four outputs with
four reference inputs.
-Assignment of channels between the AES/EBU inputs and outputs and the
AUDIOCHAIN.
- Adjustment and supervision of the audio channel levels.
-Supervision of the presence and synchronization of the audio received by the module
from the AES/EBU inputs and the AUDIOCHAIN.
