8180 SIP Audio Alerter (G2) FW 1.7
Overview
Introduction
The 8180 SIP Audio Alerter (G2) is a SIP- ompliant & multi ast apable IP speaker for
loud ringing, alerting, and voi e paging. The 8180 an be integrated with any
Communi ation Server (hosted/ loud or premise) that supports 3rd party SIP endpoints or
multi ast.
For loud ringing, the 8180 is assigned a Ring extension. When this SIP extension is alled
the 8180 will play a WAV file (tone, announ ement, et .) over the speaker. Several
ringtones are in luded in the 8180 and ustom WAV files may also be uploaded (e.g.
safety, se urity, emergen y alerts). For extra volume, or in noisy or wet lo ations, the
optional 1186 Horn Speaker an be used and onne ted to the 8180 Speaker Output (or
the single-pie e Algo 8186 SIP Horn an be used instead of this pair of produ ts, if an
Ethernet able is available at the desired horn lo ation).
For voi e paging, a separate Page extension an be assigned. When this SIP extension is
alled, the 8180 will auto-answer and play the aller’s voi e announ ement over the
speaker. The 8180 supports G.722 wideband HD Voi e for enhan ed intelligibility and
larity.
A multi ast feature allows one 8180 to broad ast page or ring audio to multiple Slave
8180 endpoints. Multi asting allows for a s alable and ost-effe tive means of designing
large s ale paging and alerting solutions, with minimal network traffi and as few as one
SIP extension for the registered Master endpoint sending the multi ast. Any number and
ombination of Algo IP speakers, paging adapters and strobe lights an be part of an RTP
multi ast. Poly om Group Page and SA Announ e are other multi ast formats supported
in the 8180 and related Algo endpoints. InformaCast support is also available with an
additional li ense pur hase.
The 8180 is onfigured using entral provisioning features, or by a essing a web
interfa e using browsers su h as Google Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer.
What's New (compared to the original 8180)
The 8180 SIP Audio Alerter (G2) is the next generation of the popular Algo 8180. The
speaker has upgraded hardware apable of running the latest se urity and en ryption
standards, in luding TLS & SRTP, ensuring se ure ommuni ation with hosted SIP
providers.
Designed to in lude all the features of the original 8180, the se ond generation has a
number of new features su h as enhan ed multi ast options, dedi ated ‘Emergen y Alert’
Extensions, and more.
As this devi e now runs on a new hardware platform, note that the firmware files are
different ompared to the original 8180. For assistan e migrating provisioning files for this
new devi e, please onta t Algo support.

8180 SIP Audio Alerter (G2) FW 1.7
Key Features
SIP Extensions
The 8180 onne ts to an on-premise or hosted ommuni ation server in the same way as
a SIP telephone. To register the 8180 with the server requires the following information:
1. IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.1) or domain name (e.g. myserver. om) of the SIP
Server
2. SIP extension (e.g. 3790)
3. Authenti ation ID
4. Password
The 8180 supports two SIP extensions whi h behave differently – RING and PAGE. One
or both may be used depending on the appli ation. If the RING extension is alled the
8180 will not answer. Instead, it will play the sele ted WAV file until the ringing stops.
Typi ally the RING extension is programmed as part of a hunt group so that it re eives a
ring signal simultaneously with one or more phones to fun tion as a loud ringer in noisy or
large areas.
If the PAGE extension is alled, the 8180 will answer and allow paging over its internal
speaker. When the 8180 answers it will play a onfigurable tone to the aller so they know
when they an begin speaking. The same tone is also played over the speaker before the
announ ement. If Paging to a single 8180, talkba k may be enabled using the integrated
mi rophone. The audio dire tion is determined by the spee h a tivity of the aller.
Loudness
Equipped with a high-effi ien y integrated amplifier and tuned high-quality loudspeaker,
the 8180 is typi ally eight times louder than a telephone speaker. If the optional Algo Horn
Speaker is used, then the 8180 an be 20 times louder.
Multicasting
Allows multiple units to simultaneously play Ring or Page audio. One 8180 may be
onfigured as a ‘Master’ devi e and broad ast an audio stream to any
number/ ombination of Algo IP speaker, paging adapter, or strobe endpoint onfigured as
multi ast ‘Slaves’. This feature provides s alability without requiring ea h endpoint Slave
to be registered with a SIP extension.
PolycomTM Group Paging
The 8180 support Poly om Group Paging. The 8180 an be added to a Poly om Group
Page so that voi e paging is heard over Poly om telephone speakers and overhead
paging simultaneously.
Ambient Noise Compensation
The 8180’s an automati ally adjusts loud ring and paging volume to ompensate for
ba kground ambient noise. If ‘Ambient Noise Compensation’ is enabled, the alert volume

will get louder or quieter by the same dB level as the ambient noise measured just prior to
the alert.
Configuration & Provisioning
Configuration an be done through a web interfa e ontrol panel or by using the program
buttons on the ba k of the unit. Central provisioning may also be used to allow units to be
pre- onfigured for a spe ifi server prior to deployment in the field. Configuration files are
automati ally downloaded from a server (via TFTP, FTP, HTTP, HTTPS) using DHCP.
Input/Outputs for External Equipment and Devices
The 8180 has a speaker output, an audio output, and dry onta t relay that an be set as
input or output. The outputs an be paired with an external speaker, a slave amplifier, or a
visual Alerter (Algo 1127) to enhan e notifi ation and alert apabilities. The dry onta t
relay an be prompted by any normally open, normally losed swit h, Algo 1202 Call
Button, Algo 1203 Call Swit h, or Algo 1204 Volume Control Swit h.
Note: The internal speaker is disabled when an external speaker is used.
Blue Indicator Light
This LED light is on during initialization, boot, or while a tive. Ring and Page modes, when
a tive, will turn the LED on steady. If the optional talkba k mode is enabled, the LED will
flash instead (during a page event) to provide a lear indi ation that the mi rophone is
a tive. The LED heartbeat option, when enabled, will flash the LED every 30 se onds as
visual onfirmation of PoE power and SIP server registration.

Programming and Configuration
After onne ting the 8180 to a network PoE, the blue indi ator light will turn on during
initialization. The 8180 will then attempt to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server. If
there is no DHCP server or the attempt was unsu essful, the 8180 will default to the
stati IP address 192.168.1.111.
Note: If you don’t have a Po switch, you’ll need a Po injector that installs
between the 8180 and network switch. The Po injector will supply 48 Vdc to the
8180. Most Po injectors are capable of providing more power than the 8180
requires (12.95 W). nsure that the Po injector is fully compliant to the I
802.3af standard.
After a su essful boot up the blue LED will turn off and you will hear a tone, and the
speaker will have obtained an IP address.
Press the ‘IP Addr (Reset) Button’ (next to the Ring Button) momentarily to hear the IP
address over the speaker and press it again to stop playing the IP address over the
speaker.
The IP address may also be dis overed by downloading the Algo lo ator tool to find Algo

8180 SIP Audio Alerter (G2) FW 1.7
Features
SIP Paging: One 8180
The 8180 SIP speaker an be registered as a third-party SIP extension with a hosted or
enterprise Communi ations Server supporting 3rd party SIP endpoints.
To register the speaker with the SIP server, use the Basic Settings > SIP tab in the web
interfa e to enter the Communi ation Server IP address, extension, username, and
password. This information will be available from the IT Administrator.
If VLAN is used, navigate to the Advanced Settings > Network tab to set VLAN options.
Important: once the speaker is using VLAN you will need to be on the same VLAN
to access the web interface.
The speaker may now be a essed by dialing its assigned extension from a telephone,
devi e, or lient. The speaker will auto-answer, play the default WAV pre-announ e tone,
and allow voi e paging until dis onne ted.
There are a number of onfigurable speaker options:
•In rease or De rease Speaker Volume
•Enable AGC (automati gain ontrol)
•Enable Ambient Noise Monitoring (speaker volume adapts to ba kground noise)
•Enable Talkba k
•Customize pre-announ e tone WAV file
The best voi e paging quality and intelligibility will be obtained using the G.722 wide-band
audio ode . Most urrent IP telephones support G.722 whi h is sometimes referred to as
“HD” voi e or audio.
SIP Ring Event
Set Monitoring Mode to ‘Monitor Ring’ and enter redentials. When a all is made to the
SIP extension the 8180 will play the sele ted WAV file from memory. Often, the 8180 will
be part of a hunt group or ring group to ring in onjun tion with a telephone.
Multicast Overview
In addition to the ring and page features, the 8180 is able to send and re eive IP audio
multi ast messages over the network to support larger deployment for both paging and
ring/notifi ation. This provides a s alable and effi ient method of building large s ale
notifi ation solutions.

In the diagram above, the bottom 8180 is onfigured with a SIP Page Extension. When
alled from a phone, the SIP registered 8180 auto-answers and plays the page audio over
its speaker. Simultaneously, the registered 8180 endpoint broad asts the audio over the
network using RTP multi ast to any number/ ombination of Algo IP speakers, paging
adapters, and strobes as required.
The registered 8180 (i.e. bottom of illustration) is the onfigured as multi ast Master and
the top 3 endpoints are multi ast Slaves. The Slave endpoints require a PoE network
onne tion but do not require registration to the ommuni ation server.
Multi asting an also be used to distribute loud ring or other alerting (e.g. safety, se urity,
or emergen y events) over multiple Algo endpoints (e.g. 8180, 8186, 8188, 8128, 8201,
8301, and 8373).
SIP Paging: Multiple 8180s (Using Multicast)
Multi ast features in the 8180 SIP speaker require that only ONE of the speakers be
registered with a SIP extension. Additional speakers may be added as multi ast Slaves
re eiving a stream from the SIP registered Master speaker. Please note that any number
and ombination of Algo speakers, paging adapters and strobes an be part of a multi ast
zone.
The Master speaker will page normally while simultaneously streaming audio to the slave
speakers. The Slave speakers do not require SIP extensions and do not need to register
with the SIP Communi ation Server.
To enable multi ast streaming from the SIP speaker, go to its web interfa e and navigate
to the Basic Settings > Multicast tab. Choose multi ast mode ‘Master/Sender’ and zone
‘All Call’. The multi ast addresses pre-populated in the table, under Advanced Settings
> Advanced Multicast se tion, will work in most ases and should only be altered for rare

speaker will automati ally monitor the ‘All Call’ zone IP address.
The page pre-announ e tone is generated from the Master. The following options are
valid for ea h multi ast Slave speaker:
•In rease or De rease Speaker Volume
•Enable Ambient Noise Monitoring (speaker volume adapts to ba kground noise)
Talkba k an only be used for the SIP registered Master speaker. When paging with
talkba k enabled, only the area near the Master speaker is overed for talkba k. The
mi rophones in the multi ast Slave speakers are disabled ex ept for ambient noise
monitoring.
Note: See “Basic Setting Tab – Multicast” section bellow for more configuration
options and instructions.
SIP Paging: Multiple Speakers (Using Individual SIP extensions)
In some ases, it may be desirable for every speaker to have a SIP extension. Multi ast
may still be used to page multiple speakers but ea h speaker an also be alled
individually or generate a all when appropriately onfigured.
A speaker onfigured as a SIP Multi ast Slave will give its highest priority to the ‘Priority
Call’ zone. Other than the ‘Priority Call’ zone, a page using its SIP extension, has priority
over all other multi ast zones.
Communi ation Servers with the apability of dialing many SIP extensions simultaneously
for paging may be able to reate zones by alling “page groups” and also page telephone
speakers in onjun tion with overhead speakers.
SIP Activated Notification Alerts
In addition to voi e paging, the 8180 SIP Audio Alerter (G2) an play audio files for
emergen y, safety, and se urity announ ements, ustomer servi e, shift hanges, et .
Audio WAV files an be stored in speaker memory and played over the speaker in
response to an event su h as a ring or relay input, and also multi ast to other Algo SIP
endpoints on the network. See Additional Features > Emergency Alerts and Additional
Features > Input/Output for more details.
Background Music Streaming
The 8301 Paging Adapter & S heduler (sold separately), set as a Multi ast master, an
stream ba kground musi to other Algo slave devi es on the network from a musi sour e
onne ted to the 8301’s AUX Input.

PolycomTM Group Paging
The 8180 SIP Audio Alerter (G2) has been designed to support Poly om Group Paging.
The 8180 an be added to a Poly om Group Page so that voi e paging is heard over
Poly om telephone speakers and overhead paging simultaneously.
The 8180 SIP Audio Alerter (G2) may be accessed remotely via SIP and
may generate a multicast page within the LAN sending voice page to both
Algo paging speakers and Polycom telephones. Audio delay may be added
to the 8180 to synchronize with voice page over the Polycom telephone
speakers
TLS for SIP Signaling and Provisioning
Algo devi es that support firmware 1.6.4 or later support Transport Layer Se urity (TLS).
This feature adds se urity by ensuring that Algo produ ts an trust the hosted SIP server.
This is useful for when third-party devi es or atta kers may try to inter ept, repli ate, or
alter Algo produ ts, and try to onne t to the server. TLS proto ol will ensure that third
parties annot read/modify any a tual data. Previously se urity was less of a on ern
be ause phone systems were on isolated networks, but hosted servi es are be oming

in reasingly more ommon. Using a hosted SIP servi e requires traffi to be sent over the
publi internet and thus mu h more sus eptible to atta ks. Signed ertifi ates are an
important pie e in the Algo devi e’s operation, to ensure the se urity, integrity, and
priva y of its ommuni ation. Algo omponents that use TLS are Provisioning and SIP
Signaling.
These Algo devi es ea h ome pre-loaded with ertifi ates from a list of trusted ertifi ate
authorities (CA), whi h are installed in the hardware at the time of manufa ture. Note
these pre-installed trusted ertifi ates are not visible to users and are separate from the
‘ erts’ folder.
The TLS handshake happens to make sure that the lient and server an trust ea h other,
and on e that trust is established, the two parties an freely send en rypted data and
de rypt any data that they re eive. After the TLS handshake pro ess is omplete, a TLS
session is established, and the server and lient an then ex hange messages that are
symmetri ally en rypted with shared (pre-master) se ret key.
Provisioning
Provisioning is se ured by setting the ‘Download Method’ to ‘HTTPS’ (under the
Advanced Settings > Provisioning tab)
Setting provisioning to ‘HTTPS’ prevents onfiguration files from being read by unwanted
third-party devi es/ atta kers. This resolves the potential risk of having sensitive data:
admin passwords and SIP redentials stolen.

Important: To verify the server you must ‘ nable’ the ‘Validate Server Certificate’
option. This then checks if the certificate that is provided by the server is signed by
any of the CAs included in the list of trusted CAs (used by the Debian infrastructure
and Mozilla browsers). If we receive a certificate signed by any of these CAs, then
that server will be trusted. Certificates can also be manually uploaded using the
‘File Manager’.
The ‘Validate Server Certifi ate’ parameter an also be enabled through provisioning:
prov.download. ert = 1
SIP Signaling
SIP Signaling is se ured by setting ‘SIP Transportation’ to ‘TLS’ (under the Advanced
Settings >Advanced SIP tab)
Setting ‘SIP Transportation’ from ‘Auto’ (default) to ‘TLS’, ensures the en ryption of SIP
traffi . Setting ‘SDP SRTP Offer’ to ‘Standard’ or ‘Optional’, means the SIP all’s RTP data
will be left unen rypted if the other party does not support SRTP. Setting ‘SDP SRTP
Offer’ to ‘Standard’, en rypts RTP voi e data, meaning the normal audio RTP pa kets will
now be se ure (SRTP). This means SIP alls will be reje ted if other party does not

support SRTP. The ‘Standard’ option se ures the audio data between parties, by making
sure that it’s not left out in the open for third parties to later re onstru t and listen to.
Important: In order for a SIP server to validate the Algo device, an additional
certificate has to be installed on the Algo device manually. For Firmware v1.7, the
only way to add this user certificate file is to use a ‘.pem’ filetype extension and
have the file named ‘sipclient’. This is done by manually adding a file named
‘sipclient.pem’, which contains a device certificate and private key, to the ‘certs’
folder (under the ‘Advanced Settings’ tab File Manager’). In the future, ‘.crt’, ‘.cer’,
and ‘.der’ certificate extensions will also be supported and you will not be restricted
to naming the file ‘sipclient.pem’.
