Introduction
Altera’s Stratix® V GX FPGA Development Kit,
which comes with a one-year license for Quartus®
II soware, provides all that you need to begin
developing high-performance designs.
You can use this development kit to:
• DevelopandtestPCIExpress®(PCIe®)3.0designs
 usingthePCI-SIG®-compliantdevelopmentboard.
• Developandtestmemorysubsystemsconsistingof
 DDR3,RLDRAMIIcommonI/O(CIO),or
QDR II+ memory.
• Developmodularandscalabledesignsbyusing
 high-speedmezzaninecard(HSMC)connectorsto
 interfacetooneofover40dierentHSMCs 
provided by Altera®partners.

2.AttachtheEthernetcablefromtheboardto
your network hub.
3.Poweruptheboard.eboardconnectsto
your network server and obtains an Internet
protocol address, which will be displayed on
theboard’sLCDwhenithasbeenassigned.
Meanwhile,theLCDdisplays“Connecting.”
4.Launchawebbrowseronacomputerthatis
connected to the same network, and type the
Internet protocol address displayed on the
LCDintheaddressbar.eBoardUpdate
Portal web page appears on your screen.
5.Clickonthe“StratixVGXFPGA
DevelopmentKit”linkanddownloadthe
latest version of the development kit soware.
eversionnumbernotedinthe“Downloads”
section of the website corresponds to the
version of Quartus II soware used to create
the design examples.
6.Browsethroughtheadditionaldesignsthat
areavailable.Checkthiswebsiteoenfor
new designs and for updates to existing
designs and documentation. Note that some
designs may require specic versions of the
AlteraCompleteDesignSuitetofunction
properly.
7. If necessary, click on the link to the soware
download center to install the latest Altera
soware tools, including Quartus II soware,
Nios II processor, and IP functions.
8.isdevelopmentkitcomeswithaone-year,
nonrenewable development kit license for the
QuartusIISubscriptionEditionsoware.To
get your nonrenewable one-year license, visit

Keep Your Board Current with
the Board Update Portal
eBoardUpdatePortaldesignexampleincluded
in this development kit facilitates easy development
kit soware and board ash memory updates,
allowing you to:
• Accessusefulinformationonwww.altera.com,
including the page that contains updated soware
and design examples.
• Loaddesignsintotheashmemoryonyourboard.
efollowingstepsensuresthatyouhavethelatest
soware available on both your computer and your
board.eBoardUpdatePortaldesignexample,
which includes a Nios II embedded processor, an
Ethernetmediaaccesscontrol(MAC),andaweb
page,isstoredinthe“factory”portionofyour
board’sashmemory.esourceforthisdesignis
installed with the development kit soware. When
yourboardisconnectedtoaDHCP-enabled
network, the Nios II processor obtains an Internet
protocol address and allows you to interface with
your board over the network through a web page.
Beforeyouproceed,ensurethatyouhavethe
following:
• Acomputerwithaconnectiontoaworking
 EthernetportonaDHCP-enablednetwork.
• AseparateworkingEthernetportconnectedto
the same network for your board.
• eEthernet,powercables,anddevelopment
board included in your kit.
Step 1. Connect to the Board Update Portal
1. With the board powered down, set the DIP
 switchSW5.3totheOFFposition(factory
 default),whichloadsthefactorydesigninto
ash on power-up.

IfyoucannotconnecttotheBoardUpdatePortal,
go to www.altera.com/products/devkits/altera/
kit-sv-gx-host.html to ensure that you have the
latest development kit soware.
Step 2. Install the development kit soware
Install the latest development kit soware tools
from www.altera.com and follow the on-screen
instructions to complete the installation.
Step 3. If necessary, use the Board Update Portal
to update your board and load the latest BTS
eBoardUpdatePortalallowsyoutodownload
newFPGAcongurationstothe“user”portionof
the board’s ash memory. If your board is up to
date, you can skip this step and proceed to Using the
BTS section of this quick start guid e.
IfyoucannotconnecttotheBoardUpdatePortal,
refer to the kit’s user guide for other options to
update the ash memory.
Toupdatetheuserportionofashmemoryon
your board, follow these steps:
1.PerformthestepsinStep1todisplaytheBoard
 UpdatePortalwebpage.
2. In the Hardware File Name eld, specify the
.ashle(<installation directory>\kits\
stratixVGX_5sgxea7kf40_fpga\factory_
recovery\build_factory_source\bts_cong
.ash)thatyoudownloadedfromtheAltera
 website.Becausethedesigndoesnothavea
soware component, leave the Soware File
Name eld blank.
3.ClickUpload.
4. Recongure the FPGA with the new les:
 a.PressthePGM_SEL(S3)pushbuttonuntil
  PGM_LED1(LEDD5)illuminates.
 b.PressthePGM_LOAD(S2)pushbuttonto
  conguretheFPGAfromthe“user_
  hardware1”portionoftheashmemory.
eBTSdesignnowrunsintheFPGA.
YoucanalsousetheBoardUpdatePortaltoupload
yourcustomdesigns.ekit’suserguidedescribes
in detail how to prepare your designs for use with
theBoardUpdatePortal.
Using the BTS
eBTSinterfaceallowsyoutoverifymostofthe
components on your board. All design les for the
BTSareincludedinthe<installation directory>\
kits\stratixVGX_5sgxea7kf40_fpga\examples\
board_test_system directory.
BTS Interface
When you launch the BoardTestSystem.exe le in
that directory, the screen shown in Figure 1
appears.Tovieweachtab,selectthedesignfrom
theConguremenu.Eachtabhasoptionsfor
interfacing to one or more of the board
components.eHelpmenuprovidesfurther
information about each test design.

Power and Temperature Measurement Tools
Power and temperature measurement tools,
available via the buttons in the upper le of the
BTSinterface,canbeusedtoseehowany
design—including your custom design—
