Use the 5-way controller to highlight “Shop in Kindle Store” and press the
5-way controller to select it. The Kindle Storefront will appear.
Use the 5-way controller to select a content categor y such as Books or
Kindle Top Sellers, or begin typing on the keyboard and select “search store”
to search for a specific book.
Select a book to view its product detail page. Use the 5-way controller
to highlight and select “Buy,” and when the book has arrived on your Kindle,
an "items downloaded" message will appear at the top of the screen.
Press the Home button, locate the downloaded book at the top of the
display, and use the 5-way controller to select the book.
Your book will open to the location the publisher considers the beginning
(usually the first chapter), and you can begin reading.
The Kindle Store is the place to purchase your Kindle books, newspapers, magazines,
and blogs. To access the Kindle Store, follow these steps:
Enter the e-mail address and password associated with your Amazon account
into the text entry box. To enter a number, hold down the ALT key and press the
appropriate letter at the top of the keyboard to select the desired number.
Move the 5-way controller down to highlight “submit,” then press the 5-way
controller to complete your registration. Your registration information will
appear on your Kindle.
Press the Home button to exit this page.
Press the Home button and then press the Menu button.
Navigate down to “Settings” by moving the 5-way controller down, then press
the 5-way controller to select.
Select “register” using the 5-way controller.
If your Kindle was a gift or is not preregistered, you will need to register your device
to make purchases on the Kindle Store and take advantage of other Amazon services
such as e-mailing personal documents to your Kindle. If you purchased this Kindle for
yourself, you do not need to register and may skip this section.
Adjusts the font size and number of words per line to suit your
reading preference. Also allows you to turn on/off Text-to-Speech
and to change the screen rotation behavior.
Retraces your steps on your Kindle.
Goes back one page in your reading material.
Turns the page in your reading material.
Accesses the Kindle Store as well as actions such as turning the
wireless on/off or adding a highlight within a book .
Shows content stored on your Kindle as well as content
archived at Amazon.
Moves the on-screen cursor up and down or side to side.
Selects an item or action when pressed.
Powers on, sleeps, or wakes the device when quickly slid and
released. Turns off the device when slid and held for 4 seconds.
Power on the device by sliding and releasing the power switch. After the Kindle
start s up, the Kin dle DX User’s Guide will open automatically to help familiarize you
with your Kindle’s capabilities.

The charge indicator light will turn yellow indicating that the battery is charging;
you can continue to use your Kindle while it charges. A green light indicates that the
battery is fully charged.
Charge your Kindle by plugging it into a U.S.-compatible electrical outlet.You can
also detach the USB cord from the power adapter*and connect it to a computer to
charge your Kindle or to transfer data.
If your Kindle does not power on or is unresponsive, try resetting the device by
disconnecting your Kindle from any power source, and then sliding and holding the

The Device a nd Related Servi ces. The Kindle D evice (the
“Device”) is a p ortable electron ic reading device that uti lizes
wireless conn ectivity to enable u sers to shop for, download,

and other mater ials, all subject to th e terms and condition s
of this Agreem ent. The “Serv ice” means the wireless
connectiv ity, provision of digital co ntent, software an d
support , and other service s and support that A mazon
provides Devi ce users.
Wireless Conn ectivity
General . Amazon provides w ireless connectiv ity free
of charge to you for cer tain content shopp ing and
downloading s ervices on your Dev ice. You may be charged
a fee for wireless c onnectivity for yo ur use of other
wireless ser vices on your Device , such as Web browsing
and downloadi ng of personal files, sh ould you elect to use
those serv ices. We will maintain a li st of current fees for
such serv ices in the Kindle Store. A mazon reserves th e
right to disconti nue wireless connec tivity at any time or to
otherwis e change the terms for wir eless connectivit y at
any time, includ ing, but not limited to (a) limiti ng the
number and si ze of data files that may be tra nsferred using
wireless conn ectivity and (b) cha nging the amount and
terms applic able for wireless conne ctivity charges .
Coverage and Se rvice Interr uptions. You acknow ledge
that if your Devic e is located in any area witho ut applicable
wireless conn ectivity, you may not be a ble to use some or
all element s of the wireless serv ices. We are not
responsible fo r the unavailabilit y of wireless servi ce or any
interruptio ns of wireless connec tivity.
Your Conduct . You agree you will use the wire less
connectiv ity provided by Amazo n only in connection w ith
Service s Amazon provides for th e Device. You may not use
the wireless co nnectivity for an y other purpose.
Digital Content
The Kindle Store.T he KindleStore enables you to download,
displayand use on your Device a variety of digitized electronic
content,such as books, subscriptions to magazines,
newspapers, journalsand other periodicals, blogs, RSS feeds,
and other digitalcontent, as determined by Amazon from
time to time(individually and collectively,“Digital Content”).
Use of Digita l Content. Upon you r payment of the
applicable fe es set by Amazon, Ama zon grants you the
non-exclu sive right to keep a perman ent copy of the
applicable D igital Content and to view, use, a nd display
such Digital Co ntent an unlimited numb er of times, solely
on the Device or a s authorized by Amazo n as part of the
Service an d solely for your person al, non-commer cial
use. Digital Co ntent will be deemed lice nsed to you by
Amazon unde r this Agreement unl ess otherwise ex pressly
provided by Ama zon.
Restricti ons. Unless spec ifically indicated oth erwise, you
may not sell, ren t, lease, distribute, b roadcast, sublice nse
or otherwi se assign any rights to th e Digital Content
or any porti on of it to any third party, an d you may not
remove any propr ietary notices or l abels on the Digital
Content. In ad dition, you may not, and you w ill not
encourage, as sist or authorize any ot her person to, bypass ,
modify, defeat o r circumvent security f eatures that protect
the Digital Con tent.
Subscrip tions. The followin g applies with respec t to
Digital Conten t made available to you on a subs cription
basis, includ ing, but not limited to, ele ctronic newspape rs,
magazines, j ournals and other p eriodicals (collec tively,
“Periodic als”): (i) you may reques t cancellation of your
subscriptio n by following the cancell ation instructio ns
in the Kindle Store ; (ii) we may terminate a subscr iption at
our discretio n without notice, for exa mple, if a Periodical
is no longer avail able; (iii) if we terminate a subs cription in
advance of the e nd of its term, we will give yo u a prorated
refund; (iv) we rese rve the right to change s ubscription
terms and fees f rom time to time, effec tive as of the
beginning of th e next term; and (v) taxes m ay apply to
subscriptio n fees and will be added if a pplicable.
Software
Definitio ns. The following ter ms apply to the Device and to
(a) all software (and t he media on which such s oftware is
distributed ) of Amazon or third par ties that is pre-ins talled
on the Device at ti me of purchase or that Am azon provides
as updates/upg rades to the pre-ins talled software
(collectively, the “ Device Software” ), unless you agree to
other terms as p art of an update/upgra de process; and (b)
any printed, on -line or other elec tronic documentati on for
such softw are (the “Documenta tion”). As used in this
Agreement , “Software” mean s, collectively, the Devi ce
Software a nd Documentation .
Use of the Devi ce Software. You may use t he Device
Software o nly on the Device. You may not sep arate any
individual co mponent of the Device S oftware for use on
another devi ce or computer, may not transfe r it for use
on another dev ice or use it, or any por tion of it, over a
network an d may not sell, rent, lease , lend, distribute or
sublicense or o therwise assign a ny rights to the Soft ware
in whole or in par t.
No Reverse Eng ineering, De compilation, D isassembly
or Circumven tion. You may not, and you wi ll not
encourage, as sist or authorize any ot her person to, modif y,
reverse engine er,d ecompile or disasse mble the Device
or the Soft ware, whether in who le or in part, create
any derivati ve works from or of the Sof tware, or bypass ,
modify, defeat o r tamper with or circumve nt any of the
functions o r protections of the Devi ce or Software or any
mechanisms o peratively linked to the S oftware, includi ng,
but not limited to, au gmenting or substitu ting any digital
rights mana gement functiona lity of the Device or Sof tware.
Automatic U pdates. In order to kee p your Software
up-to-d ate, Amazon may automati cally provide your
Device with upd ates/upgrades to the Sof tware.
Export Re gulations. You agree to c omply with all expor t
and re-ex port restrict ions and regulations of t he
Departm ent of Commerce and othe r United States
agencies and a uthorities, and not to t ransfer, or encourage,
assist or auth orize the transfer of th e Software to a
prohibited cou ntry or otherwi se in violation of any such
restricti ons or regulations.
Governme nt End Users. The S oftware is a “Comme rcial
item” as that term is d efined at 48 C.F.R . § 2.101, consisting
of “Commercial Co mputer Software” a nd “Commercial
Computer Sof tware Documenta tion,” as such terms are
used in 48 C. F.R. §12.212 or 48 C .F.R. § 227.7202, as
applicable . Consistent with these p rovisions, the Soft ware
is being licens ed to U.S. Governme nt end users (a) only as
a Commercial ite m and (b) with only those righ ts as are
granted to all othe r end users pursuant to t he terms and
conditions of th is Agreement.
General
No Illegal Use a nd Reservatio n of Rights. You may not
use the Device, t he Service or the Di gital Content for any
illegal purpos e. You acknowledge that the s ale of the
Device to you does n ot transfer to you title to or ow nership
of any intellectu al property righ ts of Amazon or its
suppliers . All of the Software is l icensed, not sold, and s uch
license is non -exclusive.
Informati on Received. The D evice Software wi ll provide
Amazon with d ata about your Device an d its interaction
with the Ser vice (such as available me mory, up-time, log
files and signal s trength) and informa tion related to the
content on your De vice and your use of it (such as
automatic boo kmarking of the last p age read and content
deletions fro m the Device). An notations, bookma rks,
notes, highlig hts, or similar mar kings you make in your
Device are backe d up by the Service and I nformation we
receive is subjec t to the Amazon.com Pr ivacy Notice.
Patents. T he Device and/or method s used in association
with the Device m ay be covered by one or more pate nts
or pending pate nt applications.
Changes to Ser vice. Amazon r eserves the right to
modify, suspe nd, or discontinue th e Service at any time,
and Amazon w ill not be liable to you should it e xercise
such right.
Termination.Your rights under this Agreement will
automaticallyterminate without noticefrom Amazon if you
fail t o complywith any term of this Agreement. In case
of such termination,you must cease all use of the Software
and Amazon may immediatelyrevoke your accessto the
Service or to DigitalContent without notice to youand
without refundof any fees. Amazon’s failureto insist upon or
enforceyour strict compliance with this Agreement willnot
constitutea waiver of any of its rights.

Severabili ty. If any term or conditio n of this Agreement

Amendme nt. Amazon rese rves the right to amen d any
of the terms of this A greement at its sole d iscretion by
posting the rev ised terms on the Kind le Store or the
Amazon.co m website. Your continued use of t he Device
and Softw are after the effect ive date of any such
amendment s hall be deemed your agr eement to be bound
by such amendm ent.

This Warrant y is provided by Amazo n Fulfillment Servi ces,

98144-2 734, United States, for t he Kindle Device
(the “Device”).
We warrant the D evice against defect s in materials and
workmansh ip under ordinary co nsumer use for one year
from the date of ori ginal retail purchase . During this
warrant y period, if a defect ari ses in the Device, and you
follow the instr uctions for returnin g the Device, we will, at
our option and to t he extent permit ted by law, either (i)
repair the Dev ice using either new or ref urbished part s, (ii)
replace the De vice with a new or refurbis hed Device, or (iii)
