Batterv
Installation
- ThePro290
transmitter
requires
8'C' cellbatteries.
The
Pro290receiver
requires
one
gvbattery.To install
thebatteries
inthePro290
transmitter,
open
thetransmitter
caseandremove
the3 holding
screws
onthe
batterycompartment
located
atthe
uppercenter
ofthe
unit. Place
the
batteries
in the holder,
orientingthemin accordance
withpositive
and negative
poles.
Turn
onthePro290T
using
thered
on/off
rocker
switch.TheredLED
onthe
transmitter
willnowblinkdimly
indicating
the batteries
andunitareready
for
operation.lf no response
is seen,
try adjusting
the batteries
to insure
good
connection.lf
stillnoresponse,
besure
thebatteries
are
good
andfresh.
The Pro290
receiver
battery
compartment
is located
on the backside
of the
Pro290R
unit. Remove
the battery
compartment
cover
and install
the 9 volt
battery.Replace
the
cover.
Settinqup the Transmitter
- Disconnect
andde-energize
thewire
that
you
want
totrace.With
thetransmitter
off,
connect
the
red
lead
tothewire
you
want
totrace
andtheblack
leadto
theincluded
ground
stake.
Insert
the
ground
stake
into
thesoil. Donotuse
common
grounds
ifpossible
asthesemay
give
false
indications.
lt isimportant
that
the
ground
stake
bein
thesoiland
independent
forthePro290
towork
properly.
Turn
the Pro290
transmitter
on. The LEDlocated
on the Pro290
transmitter
shouldnow
blinkbrightly.
ThisLED
isanindicator
of how
good
thegrounded
connection
is. The better
the ground
connection,
the brighter
the light. lt is
important
tonotethat
thebetter
the
ground
connection
andLED,
thebetter
and
easierthelocatewill
be. A good
ground
iscrucial
foroptimum
operation.
Soil
conditions
canalsoaffect
the ground
connection.
In general,
thewetter
the
ground,
the betterthe ground
connection.
Dryclimates
are more
difficultto
achieve
goodgrounding.
lf the ground
is dry,
you maywishto moisten
the
grounding
area.

connected
and
verified
to have
a good
ground
and
power,
insert
thereceiver
antenna
intothe
female
jackon the bottom
of the yellow
receiver
box. Turnon the Pro290
receiver
byturning
the
volume
knob
onthe
side
ofthe
yellow
receiver.
Placethe
receiver
near
the operating
Pro290
transmitter.
Withthe antenna
nearthe
transmitter
and
thetransmitter
on,
a beeping
sound
should
beheard
indicating
that
the
receiver
is
working
properly.
A high
pitched
tone
could
indicate
that
you
are
tooclose
tothereceiver
or
your
batteries
are
low. A fading
signal
indicates
lowbattery.
Thevolume
control
on the side
of the receiver
regulates
the loudness
of the
receiver.
After
connecting
andturning
on thetransmitter
andturning
on the
receiver,
point
thereceiver
toward
the
ground
and
listen
forthebeeping
signal.
Thecloser
you
are
tothe
cable,
the
louder
the
signal.
Move
along
the
path
of
the
wire,
following
the
course
ofthe
loudest
signal,
From
the
beginning
tothe
end
ofthe
cable,
the
cable
location
isthe
path
that
emitsthe
loudest
signal.

FindinqBrokenWire
- Breaksinwires
canbefoundwiththePro290.
Theset
upoftheunit
isthesameaswhentracingwire. Thedifference
comesinthe
reception.Whereasthetracedwire
continuestoemita signalalong
the
path
of
thecable,a break
willcausethesignal
to stopatthepoint
of break. Severe
damage
willcausethesignaldroptoalowerlevel
butnotnecessarily
end.Minor
damagecannot
belocatedwith
thePro290
asnotenoughsignalisdroppedto
noticeadifference
inresponse.
Besurethecableor
wire
you
aretrackingis
groundOd.
THISlSA MUST.The
signalneedsapath
toreturn
tothe
ground
stakeandwithoutit,
you
willnot
get
a
good
locate.A bad
ground
isindicated
onthetransmitterbyobservingaweakor
nolight
onthe
LED. Inmanycases,
adirect
buried
cable
faultwill
provide
this
grounding
and
allowalocate.
HelpfulHints- Increasesin signalstrength
and/orthe sizeof the area
it is
occurring
fromusuallyindicatessome
type
of anomalyinthe cabling.Things
thatcouldcausethisare
slackloops,nicks,
cuts,badsplices,
or
cut
wires.
Good
conditioncable
doesnotnormallychange
thetoneorstrength,other
thanavery
gradual
lossof receptionoverdistance
or abruptdepthchanges,
but it is
possible. Slackloops
(extra
wire coiledand buried)left in the ground
at
installation
areanexampleofa conditionthatwouldcauseanincreaseofsignal
and
yet
haveno
problem.
Also,
ground
condition
makes
a huge
difference
in the perfcrrnance
of cable
locators.
Basically,
a pathis beingcreated
from
thetransmitter,throughthe
cable,
outthroughthe
ground
andbacktothe
ground
stake.Anymistakeinany
ofthese
linkswillcausethelocator
to notwork
properly.
Besure
yourground
stake
issecureand
inthe
dirtandthatthetransmitter
isconnectedtothecable
you
wanttotrack.
lnaddition,the
moreconductive
thesoil,thebetter.
Dry
sandy
desert
soil
isnot
agood
transmitter
ofsignaland
you
will
experiencebetter
resultsinmoistsoil.lf
you
are
in
the
desert,alittlewateratthe
ground
stakemayhelp.

for
experience
inthe
