Part 1-Introduction
1.1General
The ModelQ46H/79PRis ahighlyversatileon-line monitoring systemdesignedforthe
continuousmeasurement oftotalchlorine insolution. The full scaleoperating range ofthe
systemmaybeselectedbythe userfor0-200.0 ppb, 0-2.000 ppm,0-20.00 ppm,or0-200.0 ppm,
and the sensingsystemwilloperateonwaterstreamswithtemperaturesranging from0to 55°C.
The Q46H/79PRTotalChlorine Measurement System iswellsuited forpotablewatersystems,
activated carbon filterbreak-through detection, and formonitoring wastewatertreatment effluents.
The basicsensing element used inthe totalchlorine monitorisa3electrode amperometric
membrane sensorwhichmeasureschlorine directly.Watersimplyflowspastthe sensorand
directlyto drain, with the flowrate and pressureacross the sensorcontrolledbyaconstant head
flowcellassembly.The chlorine measurement doesnot alterthe sampleoradd anychemicalsto
the sample stream, so the waterflowcan return to thesystemifdesired.
Q46H/79PRMonitors areavailableintwo basicelectronicversions,a90-260VACpowered
monitor,ora12-24VDCpoweredmonitor–both with threerelaysand two4-20 mAanalog
outputs.Both versionsallowflexibleoutputoptionswhichincludeadditional4-20 mAcurrent
outputs, additional0-30VDC signalrelays, PID control, anddigitalcommunicationcards.
In addition to normalchlorine measurement, the Q46H/79PRisalsoavailablewith an optionalpH
input whichprovidesatwo-parametermonitoringsystem.Both combined chlorine andpH are
displayed simultaneously.
1.2Standard System
The standardmodelQ46H/79PRsystemincludesthreemaincomponents,the Q46H analyzer,a
constant head flowcell,andatotalchlorine sensor.Alow-volumeflowcellisalsoavailablefor
applicationswheresampleflowrate and pressurecanbe carefullycontrolled. Figure2showsa
typicalinstallation includingthe optionalpH sensor.
Forconnectionofthesensorto theelectronics,a25' cableissupplied. Anadditional100feet of
interconnectcablemaybe addedusing #07-0100 junction box.All required sparepartsarealso
providedwiththe basicsystem,includingsparemembranes,electrolyte, o-rings,and anyspecial
hardware.
Note thatstandard25foot sensorcablesforboth chlorine andoptionalpH sensors can becut to
a shorterlength.Cutting the cableswillnotaffect performance, and elimination of extra cable can
sometimeseliminate electricalnoise pickup through the cables.

1527 sealedflowcellforthe pH sensor.Thistypeofinstallationrequirescarefulflowcontrol.We
recommend theuseofour03-0372flowcontrolassemblywhenusingsealedflowcells.Thisassembly
consistsofan in-line filterand afixed-flowregulatorwhichwillmaintainaconstant 400 cc/minflowrate
throughthesystem.Thisflowwillbe maintained solong asinlet pressuresare between5and 125PSIG.
The in-linefilterisused mainlytoprotecttheflowcontrolelement againstlargerparticlesthat might cause
plugging ofthe device.

2.1General
AllQ46 Seriesinstrumentsoffermaximummounting flexibility.Abracket isincluded with each
unitthat allowsmountingto wallsorpipes.In allcases,choosealocationthat isreadily
accessibleforcalibrations.Alsoconsiderthat itmaybe necessaryto utilizealocation where
solutionscan be usedduring thecalibration process.Totakefull advantage ofthe high contrast
display,mount the instrument inalocation wherethedisplaycan beviewedfromvariousangles
and long distances.
Locatetheinstrument incloseproximityto thepointofsensorinstallation -thiswill alloweasy
access duringcalibration. The sensor-to-instrument distanceshouldnotexceed100feet.To
maximizesignal-to-noiseratio,however,workwith the shortestsensorcablepossible. The
standard cable length ofthe chlorinesensoris25 feet.

2.2Wallor PipeMount
APVCmounting bracket with attachment screwsissupplied with eachtransmitter(see Figure5
fordimensions).The multi-purpose bracket isattachedto the rearof the enclosureusingthe four
flat headscrews.The instrument isthen attached tothe wall usingthefouroutermounting holes
inthe bracket. Theseholesareslotted to accommodate twosizesofu-boltthat maybeused to
pipemount the unit. Slotswill accommodate u-boltsdesigned for1½“or2”pipe. The actual
centertocenterdimensionsforthe u-boltsare shownin the drawing. Note that these slotsare for
u-boltswith¼-20threads.The 1½”pipe u-bolt(2”I.D. clearance)isavailablefromATIintype
304 stainless steelunderpart number(47-0005).SeeFigures6and 7 formounting diagrams.

2.3Panel Mounting
Panelmountingusesthe panelmountingflange molded into therearsectionof the enclosure.
Figure8 providesdimensionsforthe panelcutout required formounting.
The panelmounting bracket kitmustbe ordered separately(partnumber05-0094).Thiskit
containsametalretainerbracket that attachesto the rearoftheenclosure, 4screwsfor
attachment ofthisbracket, and asealinggasket to insurethat the panelmounted monitor
providesawatertight sealwhen mounted toa panel.
The sealing gasket must first be attached to the enclosure. The gasket containsan adhesiveon
one side sothatit remainsin place on the enclosure. Remove the protective paperfromthe
adhesive side ofthe gasket and slide the gasket overthe backofthe enclosure sothat the
adhesive side linesup with the backofthe enclosure flange. Onceinplace,you can proceed to
mount the monitorin the panel.

3.1General
Select a locationwithin themaximumsensorcablelength formounting ofthe sensorflowcell.
3.2Constant-HeadFlowcell
Chlorine sensors arebestused inaconstant-headoverflowchamberbecausevariationsin
sampleflowrateand pressurecan causeunstablereadings.When monitoring low
concentrations(below0.5PPM), thismethod shouldalwaysbe used.
Mechanicalinstallationofthe flowcellrequiresthatitbe mountedtoawallorotherconvenient
flat surface. Alternatively,the mounting holeson theplate will accommodate a2"U-boltfor
mounting the plate toa 2"pipe.

showsthe dimensionsandmounting holelocationsforthe flowcell.Besuretoallowenough
clearanceonthe leftside of the flowcell forinsertionand removalof the sensor.About 12 inches
clearanceisrecommended.

Oncemounted,inletand drainconnectionsmustbe made. The flowcellcontainsa1/8"MNPT
inlet connection anda3/8"MNPTdrainconnection. Hose barbsforthe inletanddrain
connectionsaresuppliedwith the flowcell forusewith flexibletubing. The inlet hosebarbis
used with ¼"I.D. tubingand thedrain hose barb isused with ½"I.D. tubing.

3.3SealedFlowcell
Applicationswherethesampleinletflowiswellcontrolled canuseasimplersealedflowcell.
Using thisflowcellrequiresthat sampleflowbe controlled externallytoabout 400 cc/min. using
pressureregulators and needlevalves.Variableflowrate orvariablepressurewill cause
unstablereadingsinthisflowcell.ATIoffers aspecialflowcontrolelement thatcan be used
aheadofthisflowcell ontheincoming sampleline. The flowcontrolassyispartno. (03-0372).It
willcontrolthe inlet flowrateat 400 cc/min. with inlet pressurevariationsfrom5-150 PSIG.A50
micron y-straineraheadofthe flowcontrolelement isrecommended.

3.4Submersion Mounting
Someapplicationsaremucheasierdoneusing thesubmersiblesensor.Thismethod can
sometimesbe used whereflowisreasonablyconstant, and hydraulicheaddoesnot vary
appreciably.Chlorine sensors can neverbe used incompletelystagnantconditions.Aflow
velocityofatleast 0.3 feet persecondisnormallyrequiredformeasurement. Anyapplicationsfor
asubmersiblechlorine sensorshouldfirstbe discussed with ATI. Atrialof suchinstallationsmay
be necessary.
Submersible sensors are mounted to a 1"pipe using astandard1"PVC threadbythread pipe
coupling. The mounting pipe can be secured tostandard 1½"pipe rail usinga mountingbracket
kit availablefromATI (part number00-0628)asshownin Figure12.

Part 4–Electrical Installation
4.1General
The Q46 ispoweredinoneoftwoways,dependingon the version purchased. The 12-24 VDC
poweredanalyzerrequiresacustomersuppliedDC powersupply.The 90-260VACversion
requiresline power.Please verifythe type ofunitbefore connecting anypower.
WARNING: Donot connectAClinepowerto a12-24 VDCpoweredunit.Severe
damage will result.
ImportantNotes:
1. Usewiring practicesthat conformto all national,state and localelectricalcodes.For
propersafetyaswell asstable measuringperformance, itisimportant that the earth
ground connection be made to a solidground point fromTB7. The AC powersupply
containsa single 630mAslo-blo fuse (Wickmann/Littlefuse #372-0630). The fuse F1
islocated adjacent to TB7 and iseasilyreplaceable.
2. Do NOTrun sensorcablesorinstrument 4-20mAoutput wiring inthesameconduit
that containsACpowerwiring. ACpowerwiring shouldbe run inadedicated conduit
to prevent electricalnoise fromcoupling with the instrumentation signals.
3. Thisanalyzermustbe installed byspecificallytrainedpersonnelinaccordancewith
relevant localcodesand instructionscontained inthis operating manual.Observe
the analyzer'stechnicalspecificationsandinputratings.Properelectrical
disconnectionmeansmustbe provided priortotheelectricalpowerconnectedtothis
instrument, suchasacircuitbreaker-rated 250 VAC,2Aminimum.Ifone lineof
the line powermainsisnot neutral,useadouble-polemainsswitchto disconnectthe
analyzer.
4. Repeated problemswith lightning strikesdamagingsensitiveinstrumentation are
often attributedto poorlybondedearthgroundsinthe instrument powersource. The
protection schemesincorporatedintothisanalyzercannotoperatetomaximum
efficiencyunless theground connection isat its’absolute lowestimpedance.
Thereisnostandardground resistanceuniversallyrecognized.Manyagencies
recommend aground resistancevalue of5ohmsorless.The NECrecommendsan
impedanceto ground ofless than 25 ohms,and less than 5ohmswheresensitive
equipment isinstalled.Powersourcesfeedingsensitiveinstrumentslikethe
Q46H/79PR shouldhave the lowest possible impedance to ground.

4.2PowerConnection
VerifytheACpowersupplyrequirement beforeinstalling.Alsoverifythat powerisfully
disconnected before attempting to wire.
AC powered Q46 systemsare supplied with5 cablegland fittings.
Connect HOT, NEUTRAL, and GROUND to the matching designationson terminalstrip TB7.
The two analogoutputsforthe standardsystemarepresentatterminalTB1.The loop-load
limitationinthisconfiguration is500Ohmsmaximumforeachoutput.Alsonotethat thesetwo
outputsarecompletelyisolated fromeachotherto insurethat ground loopsdo not resultfrom the
connection ofboth outputsto the same device such asa PLC orDCS.
Aribbon cableconnectsthepowersupplyassemblywith the microprocessorassemblylocatedin
the front sectionoftheenclosure. Thiscablecanberemoved during installation tofacilitate
wiringifdesired. It isbesttounplug onlyoneend. Theribboncablehasamarking stripe onone
edge thatisusedto indicate properorientation. Theindicatorstripe shouldbeon the bottom
edgeofthe cable wheninstalled.
