Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPfv1(revolutions
per minu t es).
The tachometer © =>f ig . 2 is t he left of the two large clock-type
displays .
The engine tu rns at a speed 1,000 times t he sing le dig it in t he
display, e.g. if the needle is pointing at the "2" the engine is turning
at 2,000 RPM.
If engine RPMdrops below 1,500, you sho uld downshift to the next
lower gea r. The red area at the end of the scale indicates maximum
permissible engine RPMafter the break- in period . Befo re reach ing
this area, move the selector lever to posit ion "D (Drive)" or ease your
foot off t he accelerator pedal. ..,.
l) This func ti on is not availab le w ith all engines .

0 Note
The tachometer need le sho uld no t move into the red range. If it does,
then only for a very short period of time . You could damage your
eng ine by dr iving at hig h RPM.
WFor the sake of the environment
Upshifting early saves fuel and reduces e ngine noise. •

following impo rt ant po int s :
Engine cold
As long as the need le remains at t he left e nd of the gauge, the e ngine

spee ds, heavy engine loads and heavy t hrottle.
Normal temperature
Whe n t he eng ine ha s reac hed its ope rating tempe ratur e, the needle
will move into the midd le of the gauge and rema in there. If the
engine is wo rking hard at high outside tempera t ures, the needle may
turn further to the right. This is no cause for concern as long as the _t_

When the -L warning light starts to flash, this can mean one of two
t hings : either the coolant temperature is too high, or the coolant
level is too low=> page 32.
& WARNING
• Alwa ys observe the w arning in =>page 196 , "Engine compart -

coolant level.
• Never open the engine hood if you see or hear steam, or if you
see engine coolant dr ipping from the engine compartment . You
could burn yourself. Let the engine cool off fir st sothat you cannot
hear or see any steam or engine coolant .
0 Note
• Mounting additional lights or accessories in front of the air inlets
red uces the cooling effect of the radiator . At high outside tempera -
tures or high engine load, the engine could overheat.
• The front spoi ler has bee n designed to prope rly distribu te the
cooling air when the vehicle is moving. If the spoiler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the eng ine could then overheat.

The total tank capac ity of your vehicle is listed in=> page 274.
0 Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An irregular s upply of fuel can
cause engine misfiring and fuel could enter into the exhaust system.
