PORT CONNECTIONS
This section provides information on the use of the ArgentPhone ports. It covers:
yPhone Ports.
yDTE Port.
yDC Power Input Connector.
yExpansion Port.
PHONE PORTS
The phone ports are presented as RJ45 sockets. These were chosen to be compatible with
structured wiring systems, which also use RJ45 plugs/sockets.
Using standard structured cabling the RJ45 socket on the front of the ArgentPhone unit
can be extended to the required telephone extension location. Standard Industrial
Converters can then be used to provide BT New Plan sockets (431A/631A) if required.
Refer to Telephone Converter Cables, on page 20.
The ArgentPhone 8 has a single bank of 8 x RJ45 sockets, the ArgentPhone 16 has two
banks of 8 x RJ45 sockets and the ArgentPhone 30 has three banks of 8 x RJ45 sockets
and one bank of 6 x RJ45 sockets. The phone ports are not labelled. This allows the user
to pursue his own labelling scheme e.g. each port can be labelled with the users extension
number.
Each phone port supports the ‘Caller Display’ feature specified in B.T. SIN242 Issue 2.
The phone port pin-out can be found in Port Pinouts, on page 16.
Telephone Converter cable pin-out information can be found in Telephone Converter
Cables, on page 20.
Each ArgentPhone unit is supplied with a Telephone Converter. This allows the unit to
be tested in situ before it is connected to the building’s structured cabling.
DTE PORT
The DTE port is presented as a standard 25 way D-Type socket on the rear of the unit.
This port is used as a diagnostic aid. This port is labelled:

ArgentPhone 16 and the ArgentPhone 30 provides the user with a comprehensive range
of telephony services.

TELEPHONE CONVERTER CABLES
The following diagrams show the pin-outs of various Structured Cabling Telephone
Converters. The first two telephone converters shown provide the required conversion
allowing correct operation of the attached telephone.
The third telephone converter, although universally available, uses a different bell-return
leg. This has the effect of bypassing the telephone bell circuit with the result that the
phone does not ring. This converter should not be used.
Each phone port on theArgentPhone unit acts as a Master socket, thus only Slave
Telephone Converters are required.
