MediaStreams
TheAxisproductprovidesseveralvideostreamformats.Yourrequirementsandthepropertiesofyournetworkwilldeterminethe
typeyouuse.
TheLiveViewpageintheproductprovidesaccesstoH.264andMotionJPEGvideostreams,andtothelistofavailalestream
proles.Otherapplicationsandclientscanaccessvideostreamsdirectly,withoutgoingviatheLiveViewpage.
HowtoStreamH.264
H.264can,withoutcompromisingimagequality,reducethesizeofadigitalvideoleymorethan80%comparedwiththeMotion
JPEGformatandasmuchas50%morethantheMPEG-4standard.Thismeansthatmuchlessnetworkandwidthandstoragespace
arerequiredforavideole.Orseenanotherway,muchhighervideoqualitycaneachievedforagivenitrate.
Decidingwhichcominationofprotocolsandmethodstousedependsonyourviewingrequirements,andonthepropertiesof
yournetwork.TheavailaleoptionsinAXISMediaControlare:
UnicastRTPThisunicastmethod(RTPoverUDP)isused
forliveunicastvideo,especiallywhenitis
importanttoalwayshaveanup-to-datevideo
stream,evenifsomeframesaredropped.
RTPoverRTSPThisunicastmethod(RTPtunneledoverRTSP)
isusefulasitisrelativelysimpletocongure
rewallstoallowRTSPtrafc.
RTPoverRTSPoverHTTPThisunicastmethodcaneusedtotraverse
rewalls.Firewallsarecommonlyconguredto
allowtheHTTPprotocol,thusallowingRTPto
etunneled.
Unicastingisusedforvideo-on-demand
transmissionsothatthereisnovideotrafc
onthenetworkuntilaclientconnectsand
requeststhestream.
Notethatthereareamaximumof20
simultaneousunicastconnections.
MulticastRTPThismethod(RTPoverUDP)shouldeusedforlivemulticastvideo.Thevideostreamisalways
up-to-date,evenifsomeframesaredropped.
Multicastingprovidesthemostefcientusageofandwidthwhentherearelargenumersof
clientsviewingsimultaneously.Amulticastcannothowever,passanetworkrouterunlessthe
routerisconguredtoallowthis.ItisnotpossiletomulticastovertheInternet,forexample.

TheGOVlengthisthenumerofframesetweentwoconsecutiveI-frames.IncreasingtheGOVlengthmaysaveconsideralyon

TheitratecanesetasVariablebitrate(VBR)orConstantbitrate(CBR).VBRadjuststheitrateaccordingtotheimage
complexity,usingupmoreandwidthforincreasedactivityintheimage,andlessforlowerimageactivity.Whentheactivityin
thesceneincreases,theitratewouldusuallyincreaseaswell.Ifthereisasurplusinandwidth,thismaynoteanissueand
selectingVariablebitrate(VBR)willesufcient.Butifandwidthislimited,itisrecommendedtocontroltheitrateyselecting
Constantbitrate(CBR).Whentheactivityinthesceneincreases,VBRadjuststheitrateaccordingtothecomplexity,usingup
moreandwidthforincreasedactivityinthescene,andlessforlowersceneactivity.CBRallowsyoutosetatargetitratethat
limitstheandwidthconsumption.
TheCBRtargetitrateworksliketheceilingofatent.Itlimitstheitrate,whilemaintainingsomeexiility.Theitratemayounce
upanddownwithinthesettargetutwhenitnearsthesettargetvalue,thelimitationkicksin.However,ecauseCBRwillalways
prioritizeacontinuousvideostream,itallowstemporaryovershootsfromthetargetitrate.Becausesettingatargetvalueprevents
theitratefromincreasing,framerateandimagequalityareaffectednegatively.Topartlycompensateforthis,selectwhichvariale
shalleprioritized,framerateorimagequality.Notsettingaprioritymeansthatframerateandimagequalityareequallyaffected.

TheimageBrightnesscaneadjustedintherange0–100,whereahighervalueproducesarighterimage.
IncreasingtheSharpnesscanincreaseandwidthusage.Asharperimagemightincreaseimagenoiseespeciallyinlowlight
conditions.Alowersettingreducesimagenoise,utthewholeimagewillappearlesssharp.
TheContrastchangestherelativedifferenceetweenlightanddark.Itcaneadjustedusingtheslidear.
WhiteBalance
Whitealanceisusedtomakecolorsintheimageappearthesameregardlessofthecolortemperatureofthelightsource.TheAxis

ExposureSettings
Conguretheexposuresettingstosuittheimagequalityrequirementsinrelationtolighting,framerateandandwidth
considerations.
Exposurevalue-UsetheExposurevalueslidertoadjusttheoverallrightnessoftheimage.
EnableBacklightcompensation-Enalethisoptionifarightspotoflight,forexamplealightul,causesotherareasin
theimagetoappeartoodark.
Exposurezones-Thissettingdetermineswhichpartoftheimageisusedtocalculatetheexposure.Formostsituations,theAuto
settingcaneused.Forparticularrequirements,selectapredenedarea.
Exposurepriority-WhenMotionisprioritizedandmaximumShuttertimeissettoasmallvalue,motionlurintheimageis
minimized.Thiscaneusefulforrecognitionofmovingojectssuchaspeopleandvehicles.However,prioritizingmotionmaycause
anincreaseinimagenoise,especiallyinlowlightsituations.WhenownoiseisprioritizedandGainissettoasmallvalue,image
noiseisminimized.Thelesizeisreduced,whichcaneusefulifstoragespaceorandwidthislimited.However,prioritizinglow
noisemayresultinaverydarkimage,especiallyinlowlightsituations.
ViewArea
Aviewareaisacroppedpartofthefullview.TheviewareaistreatedasavideosourceiniveViewandhasitsownvideo
streamandPTZsettings.
Whensettingupaviewareaitisrecommendedthatthevideostreamresolutionisthesamesizeasorsmallerthantheviewarea
size.Settingthevideostreamresolutionlargerthantheviewareasizeimpliesdigitallyscaledupvideoaftersensorcapture,
requiringmoreandwidthwithoutaddingimageinformation.

movements.Useaprivacymasktosetupadynamicmaskwhichwillalwaysmaskthespeciedpartofmonitoredarea.

Touseanoverlayimage,theimagemustrsteuploadedtotheAxisproduct.TheuploadedimageshouldeaWindows24-itBMP
imagewithmaximum250colors.Theimagewidthandheight,inpixels,musteexactlydivisiley4andcannotelargerthanthe
maximumimageresolution.Ifcominingtextandimageoverlays,takeintoconsiderationthatthetextoverlayoccupies16or32
pixelsinheight(dependingontheresolution)andhasthesamewidthasthevideoimage.
