Duplex Magflow Motor / Self-cleaning
The Hydratech Torrent pump has a unique impeller design. The self-cleaning
action impeller prevents large waste from blocking the impeller.
If an object becomes trapped the blades reverse direction cutting through soft
waste and throwing stones clear.
Duplex Magflow Electronic / Soft Start / Self-cleaning
Soft Start allows the motor to slowly accelerate when switched on and during
the self-cleaning cycle, increasing the life span of all moving parts.
IMPORTANT: The duplex action of the impeller will cause noise and
intermittent flow on start up and during self-cleaning. THIS IS NOT A
FAULT. Electronic models incorporate a soft start cleaning cycle which
repeats every 30 seconds to clear the pump when blocked. Turning the
pump off and on may also restart the pump. If the self-cleaning action
cannot clear the blockage it will be necessary to manually remove the
object from the impeller following the maintenance instructions in section 6.

Electrical installation
The power supply must meet the specifications on the product.
The pump is intended to be used with either a weatherproof
cable connector or permanently connected to the fixed wiring
in the main system other than by means of a plug and socket.
The cores in the supply cable are coloured in accordance with the following
code: Brown = Live, Blue = Neutral, Green/Yellow = Earth.
The electric cable is permanently connected and sealed in the motor body.
If the supply cable is damaged the pump must not be used.
Do not use the supply cable to lift the pump as this may cause damage.
WARNING - THIS PUMP MUST BE EARTHED
A Residual Current Device (RCD), also known as the Residual
Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB), with a tripping current not
exceeding 30mA must be installed in the supply circuit.
A means of disconnection from the supply having a contact separation
of at least 3mm in all poles must be incorporated in the fixed wiring.
4. INSTALLATION
For permanent installations to the mains supply, it is necessary to conform to
the regulations of the local electricity authority and this would include the use
of a metal or plastic conduit to protect the cable.
Attention has been drawn to the fact that special rules may exist concerning
the installation of your pond pump (i.e. local building regulations).
These pumps must not be used in swimming pools, or areas where people are
in contact with the water.
Always disconnect the mains electricity supply whilst the equipment is being
installed, repaired, maintained or handled. Consult a qualified electrician if in
doubt about wiring this product to the mains supply.
Warning - The Hydratech Torrent pump is provided with a
thermal cut out that temporarily switches off the pump in case
of overheating and the pump may automatically restart.
Connecting Hoses
Always secure hose with
jubilee clip.
Warming the hose in a
bucket of boiling water
can aid fitting.
Always ensure that the
smaller diameter hosetail
is cut off and removed to
prevent reduced pump
performance. See diagram.
Use the shortest possible hose length to minimise flow restrictions.
Folds and kinks in the hose will reduce pump performance.
The largest hose diameter will give the maximum pump performance.
Locating your Hydratech Torrent
The Hydratech Torrent pump should be located on a firm and level base in the
pond in a depth of at least 20 cm, but not more that 2m.
Allowing the pump to run dry without water will cause irrepairable damage to
the ceramic shaft and bearings.
The pump can be safely run in a horizontal or vertical position.
5. INSTALLATION
MAINTENANCE & CLEANING
Warning - Failure to carry out routine maintenance, leaving the
pump under reduced or no flow conditions for long periods
(e.g. blocked pond floor intake) will result in a short pump life
and will invalidate the guarantee.
Blagdon Hydratech Torrent pumps are centrifugal pumps with a
magnetic impeller movement driven by a watertight synchronous motor.
They require a minimum of cleaning. Only periodic cleaning of the pond
floor intake and impeller is necessary.

6. MAINTENANCE & CLEANING 7. MAINTENANCE & CLEANING
Annual Maintenance
Following as for routine and impeller maintenance, once a year you should
service your pump by using Blagdon Pond Pump Cleaner. This may need to
be done more frequently in hard water areas or with harsh use.
Dismantle the pump and examine all parts for wear or damage, replacing any
parts that show obvious wear and/or damage. (See "Getting to Know Your
Pump" for parts/description and replacement codes).
Particular care should be taken to examine the cable entry point and the cable.
If there are any signs of damage the pump should be discarded.
Cleaning
The use of Blagdon Pond Pump Cleaner will give improved performance and
pump life by removing built-up lime scale and waste.
Use before dismantling for easier and cleaner handling.
Routine Maintenance
Carry out routine maintenance when pump flow is visibly reduced.
Cleaning the pond floor intake.
1. Switch off electricity supply.
2. Remove the pump from the
pond (do not use the cable
to lift the pump).
3. Open the pond floor intake
by firmly pushing in the
locking tabs (a) and removing
the intake (b).
4. Wash thoroughly in fresh water.
A blocked intake will reduce pump performance.

Cleaning the Impeller
If the flow is still reduced after routine
maintenance or the self-cleaning system does
not stop after briefly cutting in, please clean
the impeller following the procedure below.
Follow routine maintenance.
1. Remove impeller base plate locating screws.
Carefully remove the impeller base plate and
impeller assembly.
2. Wash all the moving parts and the pump body
carefully under fresh water. *Do not mislay the
shaft locator, as this is needed to position the
shaft accurately, preventing damage.
3. Replace the impeller reversing the above steps.

Replacing the Impeller
If the impeller is worn or damaged it will be necessary to replace it.
Follow routine maintenance and cleaning the impeller steps.
1. Remove locator
2. Remove impeller assembly from the shaft.
3. Push out the green shaft locator from the impeller base plate.
(It will be necessary to use a small electric screwdriver or bradawl).
Repeat the procedure to replace a new assembly making sure the shaft locator
is firmly pushed into the impeller base plate.

Winter Storage
The pump can be run in the pond during the winter but care should be taken
to ensure that it is fully immersed and cannot freeze solid. If the pump is not
used during the winter, follow annual maintenance procedure and store frost-
free in the house or garage until spring.

Problem
Low flow from pump
1. Ensure pipe work is not blocked, leaking or is laid so that it gets crushed
or kinked.
2. Keep the height that water is to be pumped from the water surface (called
Head) to a minimum. The higher the head the lower the flow rate and the
more wear on the pump.
3. Use the largest diameter, smoothest bore pond hose over the shortest
distance and keep hose fittings to a minimum. This removes frictional loss
of flow and so increases pump flow rate.
4. Follow routine cleaning procedure.
5. Follow impeller cleaning.
6. Electronic models will stop, pause and clean their impeller automatically if
blocked. This is not a fault. If the pump has not cleared the blockage after
the cleaning cycle has completed the pump will turn itself off to standby
mode. Turning the pump off and on at the switch will restart the cleaning
cycle. If this does not work - follow points 4 and 5.
No flow from pump
1. Check power supply is on.
2. Check fuse and wiring (SEE ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION).
3. Follow low flow procedure as above.
If none of the above works contact Interpet (Blagdon) Consumer Advice
Department (See Faults - Problems procedure opposite).
8. TROUBLESHOOTING
