GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

understoodandfollowedbyeveryoperatorofthistractor
and itsattachments.Reviewthemfrequentlyand NEVER
TAKE CHANCES. BE CAREFUL BEFORE, DURING
AND RIGHT AFTER USEOFANY POWERED
EQUIPMENT. ACCIDENTSCANBEPREVENTED.
TStudyyourmanual.Knowyourtractorbeforeoper-
atingit.Taketimetooperatethe unit inthesafest
manner.
2. Studyallattachmentmanualsthoroughlybeforeusing
attachments with tractor.Bydoingsoyouwillbeaware
ofboththetractorandattachmentcapabilitieswhenused
as a unit, andalsothesafestmannerinwhichtooperate
them.
3. Alwaysfollowmanufacturer'soperationalsuggestions.
4. Donot fill gasolinetankwhileengineisrunningorhot.
Add gas(usingfunnel)onlyoutdoorsandwhenengineis
cool. KEEP SMOKERS AND FLAMES AWAY FROM
UNITWHILE FUELING. Thiswillhelpeliminatethe
possibilityof fire and/orexplosionfromspilledgasolineor
fumes.
5. RefueltractorfromtheLeft side, thesideonwhich
thefueltankismounted.Thisissaferandmore
convenientthanreachingoverengine with fuelcan.
6.Storefuelinapprovedcontaineroutofreachof
children. Donotstorefuelinthehouse.Gasolineis
highlyflammableandthefumeshighlyexplosive.
7.Neverwearlooseclothingwhenoperating unit. Loose
clothingcangetcaughtinmovingpartsandcausesevere
injuries.
8.Mountvehicle,engage foot brakeandput P.T.O. leverin
OFF positionpriortostarlingengine.Starterwillnot
operateunless foot brakeisengagedand P.T.O. leverisin
OFF position.
9. Donotmountorleavevehiclewhileitisinmotionor
inactualoperation,norleavevehicleunattendedwhile
engineisrunning. Injury totheoperatorora tractor
run-awaycouldoccur.
10. Alwaysshutoffengine,removekey,andlockbrakein
PARK whenevervehicleistobe left unattended. Also,
lowerallattachmentstothegroundandplace P.T.O. lever
inOFFpositiontoprevent injury tobystanders.
11. Neveroperatetractor with mower,snowcaster,or
any otherattachmenthavingmovingparts,whenany
childoranotherpersonisintravelpathordischarge area.
Childrenmust nothe allowed inor nearwor/?ingareas
whenequipment is being used. Items orobjectssuchas
wire,stones,smalltoysandetc.canbeejectedathigh
velocityoutofthedischargechute. Clear workareaofall
objectswhichmightbepickedupandthrown.
12. Alwayslookbacktobecertainnoone
is inthewaybeforeusingreverse.Thiswill
avoid thepossibilityofrunningoverany CAUTION
children, otherpersonsorpetswhomightbeintheareain
back ofthevehicle.
13. Childrenshallnotbeallowedtooperatevehicleat
any time.Theaveragechildisnotcapableofcoping with
theintricaciesofoperatinga powertool.
14. Donotallowadultstooperatevehicle without
properinstructionsincludingallsafetyinstructions.In
doingso,youwillbesuretheyknowhowtooperate unit
properlyandalsoareawareofallthesafetyprecautions.
15. Attachmentsmustbeloweredtothegroundwhen
storingtractor.Thiswillpreventtheattachmentfrom
beingdroppedaccidentlyandcausing injury. Place P.T.O.
lever inOFFposition.
16. Donottowvehicle.Damagetothevehiclecould
occur.
17. Usecarewhenpullingheavyloads.Useonlythe
approveddrawbarhitch.Limitloadstothosewhichyou
can safelyhandle.
18. Donotcarrypassengers.Thepassengercouldfalloff
thevehicleandbeinjured.
19. Keep tractorandattachmentsfreeof excess grease
and oil.The unit willoperatecooler,beeasierto
maintain,andsafertooperate.
20. Enginemustbestopped,and P.T.O. disengagedwhen
cleaning, servicing,adjusting,repairing,orinstallingat-
tachmentsontractor.Thisisnecessarytoavoidpossible
injury frommovingparts.
21. Alwaysdisconnectnegative(-)batterycablefrom
batterybeforedoinganyworkontheelectricalsystem.
Reconnect it LAST whenworkisdone.Thisistoprevent
accidental burnsandshortingofelectricalsystem.
22. Beforestarting unit checktobesureallguardsand
safetydevicesareinplaceandinworkingcondition.This
willhelpassureyouagainstpossible injury.
23. Donotdrivethis unit ona publicthoroughfareat
any time.Theoperatorisrisking injury frompassing
vehicles. Mostlocalordinancesprohibitoperatinga unit
such asthisona publicthoroughfare.
24. Donotdrivetooclosetoa creekorditch;alsobe
alertforholesandotherhazards.Ifyouwoulddrive into
any oftheaboveyoucouldlosecontrolofthe unit.
25. Becarefulon slopes, reducespeedandavoidsharp
turnstopreventtippingorlossofcontrol.Donotstop
orstartsuddenlywhengoinguphillordownhill.
26. Donotstartoroperatevehicleinaninside area,
unless itisadequatelyventilated.Engineexhaustcontains
carbon monoxidefumes,whichareverypoisonous.

vehicle.

BREAK-IN PERIOD
The engineshouldbeplacedunderload,butnot
overloaded, fromtheverybeginningasthiswillimprovethe
finalseatingoftherings.
A special"break-in"oilisusedatthefactoryduringthe
enginetestandrun-inperiod.Afterfactory"run-in",the
special oilisdrainedandtheenginefilled with 10W30SD
gradeoil.Furtheruseof"break-in"oilisnotrequirednor
recommended fornewKohlerEngines.

RECOMMENDED IN LUBRICATION CHART.

operatingrangeatalltimes.OillevelmustbebetweentheL
(low)andF (full) marksonthedipstick.Alwayscleanarea
arounddipstickso that dirt doesnotfall into enginewhen
dipstickisremoved.Checkdailyandaddoilasnecessaryto
maintainproperlevel- DO NOT OVERFILL.

ANOTHER STARTING ATTEMPT IS MADE. IFTHE
FLYWHEEL ISSTILL ROTATING, THE DRIVE
PINION ANDRING GEAR WILL CLASH ANDBE
DAMAGED. LIMIT CRANKING (CONTINUOUS)TOA
PERIOD OF30 SECONDS TO PREVENT OVER-
HEATING OFTHE STARTER. IF CRANKED UPTO30
SECONDS, STARTER SHOULD NOTBE OPERATED
AGAIN FOR60 SECONDS TO ALLOW TIMEFOR
COOLING.

brakes, place P.T.O. leverin"OFF"positionand turn
ignitionswitchoff.Removetheignitionkeywhenthe
tractorisnotinuse,or left unattended.Ifenginehasbeen
workinghardletitidleseveralminutesbeforeshuttingit
off.Thiswillallowenginetemperaturestonormalizemore
rapidly,preventingoverheating.
EMERGENCY STARTING
Intheeventofelectricalfailure,getintouch with your
DEALER forassistanceinlocatingthetrouble.
Should thebatterybetoolowonpowertostartthe unit,
itisalwaysbesttoremoveitandhaveitrecharged.
However, shouldjumpercablesbeusedthefollowing
mustbeobserved.
1. REMOVE CELL CAPS WHEN USING JUMPER
CABLES.
2. BE CERTAIN jumpercablesareconnectedpositiveto
positiveandnegativefromtheboosterbatterytotheengine
blockofthetractor,NOTTO NEGATIVE (-) TERMINAL
OF BATTERY. THISISTO PREVENT ANY SPARKS AND
A POSSIBLE EXPLOSION OFTHE BATTERY.
3. Check P.T.O. lever(mustbeinOFFposition)and
brakes locked.
4. FollowprocedureoutlinedunderNormalStarting.
5. Removetractorbatteryandhaveitfullychargedas
soon aspossible.
NOTE: DAMAGE TOTHE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
WOULD RESULT IFTHE BATTERY ISRE-
CHARGED INTHE TRACTOR.
6.Afterthebatteryisfullyrechargedandhasbeen
checked, reinstallitinthetractor,connectingthenegative
cable last.
CIRCUIT BREAKER
Ifelectricalsystemfailswhileoperatingengine,shutengine
offandlettractorstanda fewminutestoallowcircuit
breaker tocoolandreset.SeeFigure26forlocation.

OPERATION
BEFORE DRIVINGTHE BOLENS TRACTOR, THE
OPERATOR SHOULD BEFAMILIARWITHTHELO-
CATION AND FUNCTIONS OFALL CONTROLS. THE
ENGINE WILL START ONLY WHEN P.T.O. LEVER IS
INOFFPOSITIONANDTHE FOOT BRAKE DE-
PRESSED OR LOCKED.
FOOT AND PARKING BRAKE
Depress the foot pedaltoapplythebrakes.Toplacein
park,depressthe foot pedaltofullyapplythebrakes,hold
pedalinthispositionand lift parkinglocktolockpedal
down.SeeFigure10.

HYDROSTATIC TRANSMISSION
Thehydrostatictransmissiongivestheoperatora choiceof
infinitelyvariablespeedsfrom0 to8 mphforward,and0
to4 mphinreverse.AvoidexcessiveHIGHtravelspeed
wheneverpossible.Lowertravelspeedsarebestformost
jobssuchassnowcastingormowing.
Itisrequired that thetractoroperateat FULL
THROTTLE. Whileoperatingunderheavyloadconditions,
listentotheengineRPM.Iftheenginebeginstolabor,do
notadvance the travelpedal. By letting uponthetravel
pedal, thegroundspeedwilldecreaseandtheenginespeed
willincrease,therebyallowingenginetomaintainconstant
PT.O. speed.
NOTE: DONOTDRIVETHE TRACTOR IMME-
DIATELY AFTER START UP.LETTHE
ENGINE RUNA FEWMINUTESTO ALLOW
HYDROSTATIC FLUIDTO WARM UP FIRST.
IN EXTREME COLD WEATHER THE TRACTOR
SHOULD NOTBEDRIVENUNTIL AFTER THE
HYDRAULIC LIFT SYSTEM IS OPERATING.
LENGTH OF WARM UPWILLBE DETERMINED
BY TEMPERATURE.
Release brakepedal,andslowlyapplypressuretothetravel
pedal with toeof right foot forforwardmotion,orif
reversemotionisdesired,slowlyapplypressuretotravel
pedal with heelof right foot. (SeeFigure11.)

Thetravel(control)pedalisgenerallyusedfordynamic
braking.Toslowdownorstopthetractorwhileitisin
forwardmotion,graduallyapplypressuretothetravel
controlpedal with heelof right foot until tractorcomes
toa full stop.Toslowdownorstopthetractorwhileit
is inreversemotion,applypressuretotravelcontrolpedal
with toeof right foot until tractorcomestoa full stop.
Iftransmission"HOTLIGHT"comesonreducedrawbar
loading. Donotovercrowdtractor.
To moveaboutmanually, turn "FreeWheelingValve"on
Hydrostaticaboutonehalf turn counterclockwisetoopen.

Rightsideoftractorso foot brakepedalcanbeusedto
stoptractor.
NOTE: THE"L" SHAPED TUBULAR WRENCH PACKED
WITHTHE TRACTOR ISTOAIDIN REACHING
THE FREE-WHEELING VALVE. THE SLOT IN
THE ENDOFTHE LONG LEGFITS OVER THE
HANDLE OFTHE FREE-WHEELING VALVE.

HYDRAULIC LIFT VALVE
The hydraulic lift valve canbe maneuveredwhilevehicle
is at rest orin motion. Lift lever to raise and pushdown
onlever to lowerattachments.Whenreleased,lever will
automatically return to NEUTRAL position and hold,
exceptwhen inthe FLOAT position. Push lift lever all
the way down to lock in FLOAT position. The FLOAT
position must be usedwhen the operatorwants the
attachedimplement to followgroundcontoursindepen-
dently.(SeeFigure 13) Consultyourattachmentmanual
forcorrect lift leverposition.

LUBRICATION

ENGINE
Theengineoillevelmustbemaintainedinthe"safe"
operatingrangeatalltimes.Oillevelmustbebetweenthe
"L" (low)and"F" (full) marksonthedipstick. Clean
area arounddipstickso dirt doesnotfall into crankcase
whendipstickisremoved. Check dailyandaddoilas
necessary tomaintainproperlevel— DO NOTOVER-
FILL Oillevelmustnotexceedthe"F"mark.After
completelydrainingoil,reinstalldrainplugthenremove
oilfillercapandrefill with 4 quartsofoil— checkthe
oillevelonthedipstickbeforeaddingmore— thenbring
thelevelupinthesaferange.Iftheoil filter hasbeen
changed, addoneadditional pint (halfquart)ofoil.

OILFILTER
The filter ismountedonthecrankcaseoftheengine.See
Figure 8,page8.Theseare"throwaway"cartridgetype
filter elements.Ifthecartridgehasbeenovertightened
duringinstallation,a strapwrenchmayhavetobeusedto
removeitbutusuallyitcanberemovedbyhand.Usethe
followingproceduretoreplace:
1.Draincrankcaseoil.
2. Place ragsora panbelowthecartridgetocatchspilled
oil. Unscrewthecartridgecounterclockwiseanddiscard.
3. Wipeupanyspilledoil,thenwipetheadapter clean.
4. Applygreaseonoil filter gasketthen turn newcartridge
(with gasketinplace)ontotheadapterinclockwise
direction—handtightenonly.
5. Afterreplenishingoilandrestartingengine,checkarea
aroundcartridgeforsignsofoilleakage.Correctleakageif
need bebyturningcartridge tighter.
Failure tochangeoil filter elementsattherecommended
intervalscanleadtoseriousdamagetotheengine.Anoil
filter doesa veryeffectivejob;however,itmustbe
replaced each 100 hours ofoperation(everyotheroil
change)undernormalconditionsormoreoftenifthe
engineissubjecttoextremely dirty conditions.
NOTE: USE ONLY THE GENUINE KOHLER OILFIL-
TER CARTRIDGE FOR REPLACEMENT.
AIRCLEANER
Under normaloperatingconditions,disassembleandser-
vice aircleanercomponentsevery50hoursofoperation.
Do thismorefrequently(evendaily)ifextremelydusty
or dirty conditionsprevail.Thedrytypeelementis
cleaned bygentlytappingona flat surface— whendoing
this,becarefulnottodamagegasketsurfacesonelement.
Do not attempt tocleandrytypeelementsinanyliquid
or with compressedairasthiswilldamagepaper filter
material.Wipe dirt ordustaccumulationfromcover
includingbase platewhere used.

ALTERNATORSYSTEM
The Alternatorsystemprovideselectricalenergytochargea
12 volt batteryandalsoforlighting.Enginehasthe15amp
Alternatorsystem with theRectifier-RegulatorAssembly
whichisexternallymountedonthe dash. TheRectifier-
Regulator AssemblyisshowninFigure26.Inadditionto
theRectifier-Regulator,theAlternatorsystemhastwoother

basic componentswhichare:Thepermanentfieldmagnet
ringandtheAlternator-stator.Theflywheelmustbere-
movedtogain access tothesetwocomponents.
Withtheexceptionofthepermanentmagnetringwhich
is affixedtotheflywheel,the15ampAlternatorsystem
has nomovingormechanicallyoperatedpartsandis
thereforevirtuallyservicefree.Theonlyservicerequired
is anoccasionalchecktomakesureallelectrical con-
nectionsare tight and that wiresarenotfrayedor
cracked.

NATOR SYSTEM, MAKE SURE THE
FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS ARE

1.Batterypolaritymustbecorrect— negative(-)battery

3. Makesure that nofuses,resistors,orwiressmaller
thanNo.10AWGareinconnectionfrombatteryto
rectifier.
4. Disconnectwireatterminalmarked "BATT. NEG."if
arc weldingisdoneonequipmentincommonground
with engine.
5. Disconnectbatterytoregulatorleadwhenbatteryis
beingrecharged.
6.DONOToperateengine with batterydisconnected
fromAlternatorSystem.
HYDROSTATIC TRANSMISSION
Remove ignitionkey.Removeall dirt fromaroundtrans-
mission fillerdipstickareaand filter. Clean transmission
housing periodically.Iftractorisoperatedina dusty
environment,checkandcleanmorefrequently.Consult
yourBolensdealerfortransmissionmaintenance.(See

CARBURETOR
FRONTWHEEL ALIGNMENT
Carburetor isadjustedatthefactoryandshouldnothave
tobereset.Ifblackexhaustsmokeisnoted,checktheair
cleaner first. An"overrich"mixtureisusuallycausedbya
poorlyserviced,cloggedaircleanerelement,notan
improperlyadjustedcarburetor.
Ifreadjustmentbecomesnecessary,stoptheengine.Turn
theMAINandIDLEfueladjustingscrewsallthewayin
until theybottom lightly — donotforcethemclosedas
thiswilldamagetheneedlevalves.Forpreliminary
setting, turn MAINfuelscrewout(counterclockwise)2
full turnsandtheIDLE1-1/4turns.Forfinaladjust-
ments,startengineandallowittowarmupthenoperate
at full throttle andunderload,ifpossible.TurnMAINfuel
screw in until engineslowsdown(leanside)thenout until
itslowsdownagainfromoverrichsetting— notepositions
ofscrewatbothsettings,thenset itabouthalf-waybe-
tweenthetwo.TheIDLEfuelsettingcanthenbeadjusted
inthesamemannerforsmoothestidle.Roughidleisoften
duetotheidlespeedbeingsettoolow — checkthisalso.
