(PT-9800PCN only), etc.
●Do nottouch the printheadwith yourfingers. Use a soft wipe (e.g. a cotton swab) when cleaning the
printheadorthe optional printheadcleaning cassette (TZ-CL6) when cleaning the printhead.
●Do notclean the printerwith alcohol orotherorganic solvents. Only use a soft, dry cloth.
●Do notplace the printerin directsunlightorrain, nearheaters orotherhotappliances, in any location
exposedto extremely high orlow temperatures(e.g. on the dashboard orin the back ofyourcar), high
humidity, ordusty locations. Standard operating temperature range: 50 °F (10 °C) to 95 °F (35 °C).

be difficultto read.
●Use only BrotherTZ tapesorBrotherHG tapeswith thisprinter. Do notuse tapesthatdo nothave the
ormark.
●Do notpull orapply pressure to the tape in the cassette. Otherwise the tape cassette orprintermay be
damaged.
●Do nottry to printlabelsusing an empty tape cassette orwithouta tape cassette setin the printer. Doing
so will damage the printhead.
●Do notattemptto cuttape while printing orfeeding since thiswill damage the tape.
●Be careful notto scratch the CD-ROM. Do notplace the CD-ROM in any location exposedto high or
low temperatures. Do notplace heavy objects on the CD-ROM orbendit.
●The software on the CD-ROM isintendedforuse with the printerandmay be installedon more than one
computer.
●We strongly recommendthatyou readthisUser’sGuide carefully before using yourprinter, andthen
keep itnearby forfuture reference.
●Depending on the location, material, andenvironmental conditions, the label may unpeel orbecome
irremovable, the colorofthe label may change orbe transferredto otherobjects. Before applying the
label, check the environmental condition andthe material.
●Do notexpose the tape cassettesto directsunlight, high temperatures, high humidity, ordust. Store in
acool,dark place. Use the tape cassettessoon afteropening the tape cassette package.
●Markingsmade with oil-basedorwater-basedink may be visible through a label affixedoverthem.

Getting ready to use your printer
Before creating labelswith the printer, the following preparationsare necessary.

●The connection proceduresare differentdepending on the operating system running on the
computer. They will also vary depending on whethera USB connection, serial connection or
network connection (PT-9800 PCN only) isused. Fordetailson connecting the printerto your
specific computer, referto “Connecting to a computer” (→P. 13).

You will needto install the printerdriverto use your
printerwith yourcomputer. You will also needto install
P-touch Editorlabel design software. Fordetailson

PT-9800PCN” (→P. 19).
Creating labels
Aftersetting up yourprinteryou can start creating labels.

1Hold down the powerbutton on the front
of the printer, and make sure thatthe
poweristurned off with the power
button.
2Press the coverrelease button and open
the tape compartmentcover.
3Install the tape cassette.
Make sure thatthe endofthe tape feeds
underthe tape guides.
•Ifthe ink ribbon isloose, use your
fingerto windthe toothedwheel in the
direction ofthe arrow on the cassette.
4Close the tape compartmentcoverand
press the powerbutton on the printer.
5Press the Feed/Cutbutton to remove the
tape slack.

tothe computerby using the USB cable,
and then turn on the printer.
7Once the printerisdetected, the driver
will automatically be installed.
8When instructed to registeryourprinter
online, selecta registration method and
click [Next].
Ifyou have selectedto registerthe product
online, yourdefaultinternetbrowserwill
be launchedin a new window.
9When instructed to download the
optional tools, selectyourchoice and
click [Next].

Double click the “PT_Series”
(CD-ROM) icon.
2Double click “BrotherPT-9700PC
Driver.pkg” in “Mac OS X” folder.
The DriverInstallerstarts up. Follow the
on-screen instructions.

3Afterthe installation iscompleted and
the screen shown below isdisplayed,
click [Close].
The installation ofprinterdriveris
completed.
Next, install the P-touch Editor5.0.
4Double click “P-touch Editor5.0
Installer.mpkg”.
The P-touch Editor5.0 Installerstarts up.
Follow the on-screen instructions.
5When the installation iscompleted and the
message “Click Restart to finish installing
the software” isdisplayed, click [Restart].
The Macintosh isrestarted.
The installation ofsoftware iscompleted.
6Afterrestarting the computer, connect
yourprinterto the computerby using the
USB cable, and then turn on the printer.
7ForMac OS X 10.3.9 - 10.4.x
Double click the drive where Mac OS X
isinstalled, andclick in orderof
“Applications” - “Utilities” -
“PrinterSetup Utility”.
ForMac OS X 10.5.x - 10.6
Click in orderof“Apple menu” - “System
Preferences”, andclick “Print& Fax”.
8ForMac OS X 10.3.9 - 10.4.x
Click [Add] andchoose USB atthe top
ofthe screen.
Choose “PT-9700PC” from the list and
click [Add] again to add the printerto
the “PrinterList”.
ForMac OS X 10.5.x - 10.6
Choose “BrotherPT-9700PC” from the list
andclick [Add] / to add the printerto
the “PrinterList” / “Print& Fax”.
9When the screen returnsto “Printer
List”/“Print& Fax” screen, check
that“PT-9700PC/BrotherPT-9700PC”
isadded, and close the “PrinterList” /
“Print& Fax” screen.
Now you can use the printer.
