When to refill?
The printer asks for the toner cartridge to be changed before all of the toner has been used. This is a
waste of toner and your money. Put the printer into “Continue Mode” – this will force the printer to use up
all of the remaining toner in cartridge ! (This method is detailed in the printer manual
Printer DCP / MFC Series:
The Replace Toner message is displayed on the LCD or in the Status Monitor when Brother thinks you should
change the toner cartridge.
To enable Continue Mode, please follow the steps below:
1. Press MENU and choose eneral Setup => Replace Toner.

3. Press STOP/EXIT.
Print until the print quality is no longer acceptable or you get the error message toner life end and
you cannot print. Then follow the instructions below.

Refilling your cartridge
Switch printer off.
Remove cartridge and drum from printer. Separate
the cartridge from the drum unit. Replace drum
unit into printer.
Place printer cartridge on several sheets of
newspaper.
If you have it replace the plastic cover to protect the
cartridge while you work
Cut off the small plastic rivet that locks the cap in
place.
Lever out the hopper cap. We used a blunt metal
instrument to pry it partially out.
It is quite tricky to get out but it will come out with
persistence.
The key is to push edge of the cap up - until you can
grab a part with fingers or needle nose pliers and
pull it out.
Don’t worry if you damage the cap as we supply a
new one.
Please read instructions from start to finish
before you start your refill.

WARNIN : You must ensure all toner is
dumped from your cartridge before refilling with
the new toner. You must do this every refill.
Important - mixing new and old toner will cause
print defects to occur.
Empty in an area
that can tolerate a
toner spill i.e. your
garage.
Toner can be very
messy - empty the
old toner directly
into a large bin bag.
Shake your bottle of
new toner
vigorously for 30
seconds BEFORE
removing the cap.
Remove the cap and
seal from the bottle
Fit the toner pouring
spout securely to the
bottle.
Spouts are
reusable.
STOP:
Take you
r time when refilling
.
An original cartridge contains 30g of toner. Our bottle contains 70g – that’s more than double the amount of
toner than an original cartridge.
You can add the whole bottle - but it will barely fit in the cartridge. You will need to allow the toner to
settle inside the cartridge to get the toner in.
We advise adding half a bottle and topping it up later. Add 30-35g per fill (approx half a bottle
(Each bottle contains 70g of toner – the bottle containing the toner but without the lid - will weigh approx
105g. So if you add 30g the bottle without the lid will then weigh approx 75g
Insert the spout into
the hole. The toner
will flow out like
water, so take care
not to spill it.
A
With the spout
inserted – carefully
“Upend” the
cartridge and allow
the toner to slowly
pour into the
cartridge.
Do not squeeze
the bottle.
B
Please read instructions from start to finish
before you start your refill.

Carefully lower the
cartridge and bottle to
this angle and allow the
toner to settle into the
cartridge
C
Repeat stages A B C with 30 second breaks at point
C (if necessary to allow the toner to settle into the
cartridge.
Replace the cap in your toner cartridge with the new
cap. Make sure the cap is fitted securely so that no
toner can escape.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR RESETTIN THE CARTRID E
You have 2 options. You can either use the toner continue mode (see page 1 - or you can reset it using a
reset gear. We think the first option is the best but have provided the details for the gear reset below
Brother has introduced a small plastic gear in its cartridges that tells the printer a new cartridge is installed.
You will need to reset the plastic gear into the correct position or the cartridge will be rejected by the printer.
Follow instructions below.
Starter cartridges – (simply marked TN & come free with the
