Mostfibercableassembliesfailduetolackofproperend‐facecleaning.When
cleaningisnottheissue,theCamplexopcalCONFiberOpcCableTesteris
theperfectdiagnosctoolforalluserlevelstoaccuratelytestandevaluate
opticalCONandopticalCONSMPTEcablesinthestudioandinthefield.The
CamplexopticalCONTesteristhemostcost‐effecvemeanstotestSMPTEelec‐
tricalandopcalconnuity.
Theunitincludesacomprehensiveelectricaltestcircuittoevaluateshield
connuityandshorts,acommonlyoverlookedbutimportanttest.Electrical
tesngscansthepower,control,andmainshieldforopencircuitsandshort
circuitsinopcalCONcablesthatincludeelectricalconductors.
AVisualFaultLocator(VFL)isusedtoquicklylocatebrokenfibersandtoverify
individualfibersforopcalconnuity.Thetestercanaidinthemeasurement
ofopcalpowerlossandbudgets,allowingaccesstofibersthatarenoteasily
accessiblewithinNeutrikopcalCONconnectors.Theunitcanalsoactasabreak
outboxfortheconneconofaddionalfiberopctoolssuchasfiberlight
sources,powermeters,andopcalme‐domainreflectometers(OTDR).

Instructions
1.Placetheunitinasecurelocaonwhereitwillnotbebumpedorfall.
Provideroomaroundtheunittoavoidinterference.Ensurethefiberop‐
ccabledoesnotbendsharplyinaghtradius,whichcanseverelyaffect
thesignaltransfer.Anon‐slip,anstacsurfacematisrecommendedon
whichtoconductthetesng.
2.Disconnectcablesfromallequipmentpriortotesng.
3.CLEAN(seepage10forcleaninginstrucons)allopcalcable
contactsthatwillbeconnectedtotheCMX‐OPT‐CON‐TST;thisincludes
theopcalCONcabletobetestedandtheSTtoSTjumpercables.Inspect
withavideoinspeconunit–Lightelor
similarifavailable.STconneconsaresecurelymadeinthesamemanner
youwouldconnectabayonetBNC:whilepressinglightlyinonthecon‐
nector,twistitinaclockwisedireconabout1/8to1/4ofaturnand
thenrelease.Theconnectorshouldstayinsertedandhavebackwards
springpressureholdingthebayonetinplace.TheopcalCONconnecons
aremadebyaligningthekeysatthetopoftheconnectorsandpushing
themstraighttogetherunltheyclickandlock.Toremove,gentlypushin
andpullbackonthespringloadedcollar.
NOTE:Beforeconnecngthecabletobetested,turntheuniton.
Theunitisnowinself‐testmodeandalltheLEDswillbesolidly
illuminatedexceptforthelowbaeryLED.Thisself‐testensures
thatalltheLEDsarefunconingcorrectlyandtesngcanproceed.

TheopcalCONcableundertestcontainstwofiberopcchannels,
AandB,thatshouldbecheckedwiththeVFLindependentlyasfollows:
a.CleanandconnectoneendofeachofthetwoSTtoSTjumpers
totheAlabeledSTconnectoroneachsideofthetesteralong
withtheopcalCONcableundertestwhichgivesaccesstothe
usuallyyellowjacketedfiberwithintheopcalCONcable.
b.ConnecttheVFLtotheSTcablethatispluggedintotheleAST
connectoronthetesterandcheckforredlaserlightpass
throughattheendoftheotherSTjumperthatisconnectedto
theASTconnectorontherightsideofthetester.Thelight
shouldbeeasytoseebyaimingthe
connectoratalightlycoloredsurfacesuchasastandardsheetof
paper.
DONOTLOOKDIRECTLYINTOTHECONNECTOR!
Ifyoudonotseearedlaserlightshiningonthesurfaceofthe
sheetofpaper,thenthereisabreakinthefiber.

NOTE:RegularlytesttheSTtoSTjumpersbypluggingtheminto
theVFLandfacingtheotherendatalightly
coloredsurface.Ifyoudonotseeabrightredlightshiningon
thesurface,thenareplacementSTtoSTjumpermaybeneeded.

laserlightbyshiningitatalightlycoloredsurface.DONOTLOOK

areinsertedintoadevice’soutputsorinputs.Failuretocleanthecontactscan
damagetheunit’sopcsovermeandcanrenderthecableANDthedevice
permanentlyuseless.
USEcleaningkitsthatarespecificallyintendedforfiberopcs.Othercleaning
kitscancontainmicroscopiccontaminantsthatcandamagethecontacts.Fi‐
berOpcCleaningKitsareavailablefromyourdealerorsupplier.
1 Contacts are the terminated ends of the actual fibers, the part that is insert‐
ed and makes ‘contact’ to enable light wave transmission through the fiber.
