I. Product Overview
The new imageRUNNER™ 2200/2800 Series (segment 2), are shipped as
standalone digital copiers1, operating with up to 22 and 28 copies per minute.
Optional network printing, Super G3 Fax capabilities, and network scanning can
be added as upgrades.
The newly added features for the imageRUNNER 2200/2800 Series include Job
Build Mode, Merge Document Mode, Scanning, Cover/Sheet Insertion,
Mailboxes, Copy Reservation, and Scan Once-Print Many.
As an Energy Star®Partner, Canon U.S.A., Inc. has determined that this product
meets the Energy Star guidelines for energy efficiency.
II. Design Features
A. Small Footprint Design
1. Integrated Paper Output
The imageRUNNER 2200/2800 is the first Canon Multifunction device
to integrate finishing features in the Segment 2 family. In the mid-size
office environment where advanced functionality may be needed, the
customer can add the optional external Saddle Finisher-G1 with the
Inner 2-Way Tray-A1 for saddle stitch booklets and the optional
Puncher Unit-K1 for 2/3-hole punch paper may also be added.
B. New Optional Output and Finishing Capabilities
1. Finisher-J1
The optional built in style Finisher-J1 eliminates the need for a
document or copy tray.
2. Inner 2-Way Tray-A1 With Copy Tray-F1
Collates, groups or rotates copy sets in alternating directions. When
the optional Copy Tray-F1 is attached to the Inner 2-Way Tray-A1,
three bins will be available for the user to choose where to print out a
copy, print or Fax job. If the Copy Tray-F1 is not installed, the user can
only choose the trays for copying and faxing or copying and printing.

3. Saddle Finisher-G1 With Inner 2-Way Tray-A1
When a Saddle Finisher-G1 is installed, the Inner 2-Way Tray-A1 must
also be installed. The Saddle Finisher-G1 and Inner 2-Way Tray-A1
are delivered as a set item. The Saddle Finisher-G1 and the Inner 2-
Way Tray-A1 allows the user to choose where to print out a copy, print
or fax job.
Note:
The optional Puncher Unit-K1 can only be added with the Saddle
Finisher-G1.
4. Configuration of Optional Accessories
The Saddle Finisher-G1 and Inner 2-Way Tray-A1 are bundled
together as one Part Number: 6681A003AA. The Puncher Unit-K1
can be added as an option for the Saddle Finisher-G1
The Inner 2-Way Tray-A1 and Copy Tray-F1 are bundled together as
one Part Number: 6680A003AA. No other Finishing accessory can
be used in this configuration.
When the Finisher-J1 is installed, no other finishing option can be
used.

C. Scanning Unit (Light and Sensor)
The improved technology of the reading unit incorporates a smaller
scanning light and sensor, enabling the imageRUNNER 2200/2800 to
have a smaller footprint, reducing the cost of the units.
D. High Capacity Hard Disk and Memory
The 5.1 GB Hard Drive and 128 MB shared memory for copy and print
functions allows the imageRUNNER 2200/2800 to continuously drive the
engine speed when using Scan Once-Print Many, Copy Reservation, Job
Build and the Mailbox functions. The hard drive can store approximately
4,000 pages for copying, printing, and faxing functionality. The
imageRUNNER 2200/2800 comes standard with 128 MB of memory.
1. Scan Once-Print Many
Scans an image once to memory and prints the image continuously at
100% productivity.

2. Job Build Functions
Job Build Mode batches disparate originals from the feeder and platen
glass for output as one compound document.
3. Merge Document Mode
Merge Document Mode should be used when there is a need to
combine multiple data from the PC. Merge Document Mode will
combine data created by different software and by multiple users and
will print it as one document. Data, which is sent from the PC, must be
sent and stored to a mailbox. The Merge Document Mode will merge a
document from a mailbox and documents that were previous stored in
another mailbox.
4. MailBox Functions
The user can scan, store, and arrange documents in any order to a
Mailbox from the PC, DADF, or Platen Glass.
5. Copy Reservation
The imageRUNNER 2200/2800 can store or reserve up to five different
copy jobs decreasing user wait time and increasing productivity for the
user.

The imageRUNNER 2200G/2800G models are based on the
imageRUNNER 2200/2800 Series and meet the same product
performance specifications. The only difference is the imageRUNNER
2200G/2800G models include the Duplexing Automatic Document
Feeder-H1 (DADF-H1) as standard equipment, whereas the DADF-H1 is
an optional accessory for the imageRUNNER 2200/2800.

V. Service Features
A. Serviceability
To ensure machine reliability and copies of the highest quality, Canon
U.S.A., Inc. recommends that a Quality Assurance Visit be performed
every 120,000 copies. Quality Assurance requires the cleaning,
checking, and replacement of parts as necessary for specific areas every
120,000 copies. The frequency of the Quality Assurance Visits will
depend upon the following conditions: monthly copy volume,
environment, type of originals copied, and customer’s handling of the
copier equipment.

C. Power and Plug Requirements
The imageRUNNER 2200/2800 Series requires a 15 AMP outlet as
well as a NEMA 5-15R-receptacle 15-ampere outlet for proper
operation (See Figure 1). Confirm that a NEMA 5-15R receptacle is
available prior to installation.

D. Soft Counter
The imageRUNNER 2200/2800 Series utilizes soft counters, not hard
counters, as used with other models. The control panel normally displays
4 out of 6 counters when the counter check button is pressed. The
counter description may be changed, enabled or disabled in service
mode, except for counter 1. The counter 1 setting cannot be changed
under any circumstances.
The chart below indicates the counter configurations:

E. Upgrading
Canon U.S.A. will provide dealers with the Service Support Tool (Version
1.25 or later) via the Canon e-Support Center for updating the following
system components:
• System Software stored on the Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
• Language
• HD Format
• Remote User Interface (RUI) stored on the HDD
• BootROM stored on a Flash Double Inline Memory Module
(FDIMM) on the Main Controller Printed Circuit Board (PCB)
When the hard disk drive is replaced, the Service Support Tool is used to
format the new HDD and load software. Canon U.S.A. will make the data
for these updates available to the dealers via CD-ROM.
Note:
A Personal Computer is required when installing upgraded firmware. Use
a Network or Parallel Bicentronics IEEE-1284 I/F cable14 as an interface
between the personal computer and the imageRUNNER 2200/2800 to
enable high-speed transmission of the data.
14The following Bicentronics I/F cable is required: One end of the cable should have a TYPE A connector prescribed by IEEE1284
(25 pin, for PC connection). The other end should have a TYPE B connector (38 pin, for copier connection). Cables conforming
to the IEEE1284 are marked “IEEE Std. 1284 compliant.”

F. Computer Requirements For Upgrading
The following are the recommended Desktop PC or laptop specifications
to use for the download:
1) CPU: Intel™ MMX Pentium™ 166MHz or Celeron™ 400 MHz or higher
2) Memory: 32MB or more
3) Free HDD Capacity: 100MB or more of available hard disk space
4) Printer Port: ECP mode must be both supported and selected
5) Network: Must posses 10/100 BaseT or PCMCIA slot (Ethernet card)
6) Windows 95/98/NT 4.0/2000 (Windows Me is not supported)
Note: Lower speed only is possible when using Windows NT & 2000.
G. Handling Of The Hard Disk Drive
The imageRUNNER 2200/2800 Series uses a HDD for storage of the
firmware and image data. A HDD is easily affected by shock, vibration,
and static charge; therefore its handling requires special care. When
transporting a HDD, which is obtainable as a service part, it must be kept
in its original package until it is installed into the main body.
Exemption clause:
Canon U.S.A. or any of its affiliates or dealers will not be liable for any
damages for loss of data received or stored on the hard disk, including
loss arising from lost opportunity to use such data, even if Canon is
informed of the possibility of such damages. Therefore, it is
recommended not to store data on the HDD without having copies or
printouts of such data outside. (Review the terms of the product's limited
warranty for more details.)
