I. Product Overview
The imageRUNNER™8500, Canon’s first digital machine in segment 5 with up to
85 pages-per-minute, is a high-speed multifunction copier model that will be
upgradeable to printer and advanced models. The imageRUNNER 8500 takes
full advantage of current technology implemented in the imageRUNNER 600.
Although many functions and features have been extracted from the
imageRUNNER 600, the imageRUNNER 8500 includes many new-sophisticated
features.
As an Energy Star®Partner, Canon U.S.A., Inc. has determined that this
product meets the Energy Star guidelines for energy efficiency1.
II. Design Features:
New features for the imageRUNNER 8500 include Job Build, Mirror Image, Tab
Printing, up to 5 copy reservations, 100 sheet staple and 3 hole / 2 hole punch.
A. High Image Quality
The imageRUNNER 8500 scans up to 600 x 600 dpi, copies up to 1,200 x
600 dpi and printing up to 2,400 x 600 dpi.
B. High Productivity
Scanning Speed
Scanning speed for 1 to 1 is 80 ipm. High speed scanning is realized even
while printing.
Stapling
The imageRUNNER 8500 staples up to 100 sheets and has staple
cartridges containing 50 or 100 staples.
Punch Finishing
The imageRUNNER 8500 Finisher-K2 and Saddle Finisher-K3 can punch 2
to 3 holes in documents. The puncher unit automatically detects what type
of hole is used according to the paper selection. Three holes are punched in
letter paper and two holes are punched in Letter-R and Legal Paper.
Hard Drive Capacity
The imageRUNNER 8500 has a 10GB hard drive.
Copy Reservation
The imageRUNNER 8500 has up to five copy reservations at a time.
First copy Output time
First copy output is approximately 2.9 seconds from platen glass and
approximately 4.3 seconds from the ADF.

A. Serviceability
Toensure machine reliabilityand copies ofthe highest quality, Canon
U.S.A., Inc. recommends that a QualityAssurance Visit be performed
every250,000 copies. QualityAssurance requires the cleaning,
checking, and replacement ofparts as necessaryforspecificareas every
250,000 copies. The frequencyofthe QualityAssurance Visits will
depend on the followingconditions: monthlycopyvolume, environment,
type oforiginals copied, and customer’shandlingofthe copier
equipment.
A QA Procedure will require the replacement ofvarious consumable
parts every250,000 copies.

C. Power and Plug Requirements
The imageRUNNER 8500 requires a 15AMP, 208V outlet as well as
aNEMA 6-15Rreceptacle, See Figure 1 forproperoperation.
Confirm that a NEMA 6-15Rreceptacle isavailable priorto
installation.
CAUTION
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PLUG THE imageRUNNER 8500 COPIER
INTO A STANDARD NEMA 6-15R RECEPTACLE. DOING SO MAY
RESULT IN AN OVERLOAD TO THE ELECTRIC CIRCUITS OR
DAMAGE TO THE COPIER.

D. Upgrading
Canon U.S.A. will provide dealers with the Service Support Tool (Version
1.25 orlater) via Canon e-Support Centerforupdatingthe following
system components:
• SystemSoftwarestored on the HardDisk Drive(HDD)
• Language
• HD Format
• RemoteUserInterface(RUI) stored on the HDD
• BootROMstored on a Flash Double Inline MemoryModule
(FDIMM) on the MainController Printed CircuitBoard(PCB)
When the hard disk drive isreplaced, the Service SupportToolisused to
format the newHDD and load software. Canon U.S.A. will make the data
forthese updates available to the dealers via CD-ROM.
Note:
A Personal Computer is required when installingupgraded firmware.
Use a Network orParallelBicentronics IEEE-1284 I/F cable4as an
interface between the personal computer and the imageRUNNER 8500
to enable high-speed transmission ofthe data.
E. Computer Requirements For Upgrading

Note: Lowerspeed only ispossible when using Windows NT& 2000.

F. Handling Of The Hard Disk Drive
The imageRUNNER 8500 uses a HDD for storage of the firmware and
image data. A HDD is easily affected by shock, vibration, and static
charge; therefore its handling requires special care. When transporting a
HDD, which is obtainable as a service part, it must be kept in its original
package until it is installed into the main body.
Exemption clause:

canon is informed of possibility of such damages. Therefore, it is
recommended not to store data on the HDD without having copies or
printouts of such data outside. (Review the terms of the product's limited

such as: system and usersoftware, networkingand connectivityissues,
electro-mechanicaloperations, and otherhardware servicingissues.
