program that promotes energy saving through the use of computer and
other office equipment. The program backs the development and
dissemination of products with functions that effectively reduce energy
consumption. It is an open system in which business can participate
voluntarily. The targeted products are office equipment such as computers,

guide to familiarize yourself with the basic operation of some of the main
functions that can be performed on your machine.

If the Quick Start Guide does not provide you enough information please refer to
the User’s Guide which can be installed from the Setup CD-ROM. This guide

Setup Outline
Follow the steps below to start using the machine.
Step 1
Confirming Your Connection Type. (see page 5)
There are several ways to connect the machine and your computer.
Decide on a connection type that matches your network environment.
Step 2
Preparing the Machine. (see page 10)
Place the machine and install the print head and the ink tanks.
Even though the machine is intended to be used over a wireless or wired LAN, it must be placed
temporarily near the computer to do the setup with a USB cable.
Step 3
Confirming the Setup Environment. (see page 20)
Setup procedure varies depending on your connection type.
Decide on a setup procedure that matches your connection type.
Step 4
Setting Up the Machine and the Computer.
(for Windows®see page 24, for Macintosh®see page 42)
Install the driver to use the machine and the software to connect it to a network.
If you are using the machine over a wireless or wired LAN, place it in the location where you will
use it as instructed during setup.
Setup complete
The machine is now ready for use.

Confirming Your Connection Type
If your machine is connected to a network, it can be shared by multiple computers.
This machine can be used over a wireless or wired LAN, as well as with USB connection.
Connection types available for this machine are as follows.
zConnection over wireless LAN via an access point (see page 6)
zConnection over wired LAN (see page 7)
zConnection with USB connection (see page 7)
zCombination of USB connection and LAN (wireless or wired) (see page 8)
Before starting setup, make sure that you know the connection type available to your computer, and
decide on a connection type for your machine.
Important
zSelect a connection method based on how you intend to connect to the machine.
For example, if the connection between the computer and access point is wireless and the machine and
access point are connected by LAN cable, the machine connection method becomes wired LAN.
zWe recommend that, since advanced network knowledge is required, you do not use the machine over
a wireless and wired LAN at the same time.

zFor necessary information, refer to the instruction manuals of your network devices.
zIn an office setup, consult your network administrator.

Connecting over Wireless LAN via an Access Point
Your computer communicates with the machine via an access point (the infrastructure mode).
To share the machine among multiple computers, connect them to the access point.
Important
zWhen using this machine over a wireless LAN, use the infrastructure mode. It does not support the ad-
hoc mode.
zAn access point is needed to set up the infrastructure mode. This must be purchased separately.
zA wireless LAN card or adapter must be installed in your computer to connect your computer to the
wireless LAN. These must be purchased separately.
zIf you connect to a network that is not protected with security measures, there is a risk of disclosing data
such as your personal information to a third party.
Note
zTo connect to the Internet in a wireless LAN environment, you may use a wireless LAN access point
that has a router function as shown below. The configuration and the type of the device vary depending
on your network environment. For details, refer to your device’s instruction manual or contact its
manufacturer.

Connecting over Wired LAN
Your computer communicates with the machine via an Ethernet network.
Connecting with USB Connection
Your computer communicates with the machine via a USB cable.
Important
A hub and LAN cable are required to connect this machine to a wired LAN. These must be purchased
separately.
Note
The configuration and the type of the device vary depending on your network environment. For details,
refer to your device’s instruction manual or contact its manufacturer.

Combination of USB Connection and LAN
(Wireless or Wired)
Using both USB Cable and Wireless LAN Connections
A computer communicates directly with the machine with a USB cable, while other computers
are connected over a wireless LAN (infrastructure mode).
It does not matter which connection, USB or wireless LAN, has been set up first. You can
connect to a USB-connected machine from another computer over wireless LAN, or connect to a
wireless LAN-connected machine from another computer via USB.
You need to perform setup both on the computer to be used with USB connection and on the
computers to be used over wireless LAN.
Important
A wireless LAN card or adapter must be installed in your computer to connect your computer to the
wireless LAN. These must be purchased separately.

Using both USB Cable and Wired LAN Connections
A computer communicates directly with the machine with a USB cable, while other computers
are connected over wired LAN.
It does not matter which connection, USB or wired LAN, has been set up first. You can connect
to a USB-connected machine from another computer over wired LAN, or connect to a wired
LAN-connected machine from another computer via USB.
You need to perform setup both on the computer to be used with USB connection and on the
computers to be used over wired LAN.
Note
To connect over wired LAN, your machine needs to be connected to a hub or a similar network
device.
Important
We recommend that, since advanced network knowledge is required, you do not use the machine over a
wireless and wired LAN at the same time.

Turning on the Machine
1Place the machine to set up.
Place the machine on a flat and horizontal surface, and do not place any objects in front of the
machine.
2Open the Sheet Feeder Cover (A) and pull
the Paper Support (B), then the Paper Output
Tray (C) and open the Output Tray Extension
(D).
Note
zPlease confirm the included items against the illustration printed on the lid of the packing box.
zEven though the machine is intended to be used on a wireless or wired LAN, it must be placed
temporarily near the computer to do the setup via a USB cable. Place the machine in the location where
you will use it over a wireless or wired LAN as instructed during setup.
zAlthough wireless communication between rooms or floors is possible, the wireless communication
quality may become poor. The wall must be made of a material that allows radio waves to pass through.
If the wall material prevents communication, set the machine in the same room as the access point.
Warning
zNever attempt to plug the power cord into the wall outlet or unplug the power cord when your hands are
wet.
zNever damage, modify, stretch, or excessively bend or twist the power cord. Do not place heavy objects
on the power cord.
zNever use any power supply other than the standard power supply available in the country of purchase.
Using the incorrect voltage and frequency could cause a fire or electric shock.
zAlways insert the plug all the way into the wall outlet.
Caution
Make sure to hold the base of the machine when lifting it out of the packing box or moving it.
Note
If you do not intend to use the machine for a long period of time, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet
after turning off the machine.
Caution
Before turning on the machine, remove all of the shipping tapes.
Note
To open the Paper Output Tray, put your finger in the
rounded indent of the tray and open it gently.

3Plug the power cord in the back of the
machine (A) and connect the other end to the
wall outlet.
4Open the Operation Panel, then press the
ON/OFF button to turn on the machine.
5Use the {or }button on the Operation
Panel to select the language for the LCD,
then press the OK button.
“Install the print head and set the ink tank.” will
be displayed.
Important
Make sure that the Document Cover (B) is closed.
Important
If an unintended language is displayed on the LCD,
press the Back button to return to the Language
selection screen.
Note
zThe language setting may not be available
depending on the country of purchase.
zYou can change the language for the LCD at
anytime. For details, refer to “An Unintended
Language Is Displayed on the LCD” of
“Troubleshooting” in the User’s Guide on-screen
manual.

Installing the Print Head
1Open the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) until it
locks into place.
The Printer Head Holder moves to the center.
2Open the Inner Cover (A).
3Firmly raise the Print Head Lock Lever (A)
until it stops.
The Print Head Lock Lever may feel heavy.
Important
For your safety, always firmly grip the areas illustrated
when opening the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover).
Important
Be careful not to touch any parts inside the machine,
other than the Print Head Lock Lever.

4Remove the Print Head from its package.
5Remove the orange protective cap (A) from
the Print Head.
Discard the cap once it is removed.
6Insert the Print Head.
Caution
There may be some transparent or light blue ink on the
inside of the bag the print head comes in, or the inside
of the protective cap - this has no effect on print
quality. Be careful not to get ink on yourself when
handling these items.
Note
zDo not touch the electrical contacts (B) or the print
head nozzles (C).
zDo not reattach the protective cap once it has been
removed.
Note
zDo not touch the inside of the slots (A).
zBe careful not to touch the electrical contacts (B)
inside the machine.

7Lower the Print Head Lock Lever carefully
and press it down.
Important
If the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) is left open for
more than 10 minutes, the Printer Head Holder moves
to the right. In this case, close the Scanning Unit (Print
Cover), and open it again.
Note
Do not touch the lever once the Print Head has
installed.

Installing the Ink Tanks
1To prepare the cyan ink tank first, pull the
orange tape (A) in the direction of the arrow,
then remove the protective film (B)
completely.
2Remove the orange protective cap (A) from
the bottom of the ink tank.
Discard the cap once it is removed.
Caution
zStore ink tanks out of the reach of small children for their safety.
zDo not drop or shake ink tanks as this may cause the ink to leak out and stain your clothes and hands.
zBe sure to remove the clear film from the ink tank in the exact order as shown in step 1.
Note
If the protective film remains on the air hole (C), it may
cause problems with printing.
Note
zDo not touch the electrical contacts (B).
zDo not squeeze the sides of ink tanks as this may
cause the ink to leak out and stain your clothes and
hands.
zDo not touch the open ink tank port (C).
zDo not reattach the protective cap once it has been
removed.

3Insert the Cyan ink tank into the right-hand
slot of the Print Head, then press on the
mark on the ink tank until the ink tank snaps
firmly into place.
The ink lamp (A) lights red.
4Use the same procedure to install the other
ink tanks into their appropriate slots.
5Close the Inner Cover.
Note
zMake sure that all the ink tanks are installed in the
correct position, matching the label (A). The
machine cannot be used unless all the ink tanks are
installed.
zMake sure that all the ink lamps light red.
Note
Make sure that the Inner Cover is securely closed.

6Close the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover).
The machine starts operating. Wait about 2 minutes
until the machine stops making noise.
Important
For your safety, always firmly grip the areas illustrated
when closing the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover).
Note
If the ALARM lamp lights up orange and an error
message is displayed on the LCD, the ink tanks may
not be installed in their proper positions. Open the
Scanner Unit (Printer Cover), then make sure that all
the ink tanks are installed in the correct position,
matching the label.
