lensthatdoesnotcomeuptoCanon'sveryhighstandardsinany
oneofthesetestsisimmediatelydiscarded.Accordingtothecharac-
teristicsofthelenses,theyarecoatedeitherinpurple,magenta,or
amberinordertoobtaintruecolorforcolorphotography.

oppositethe"R"indexmark.Thelensisnowfocusedforinfraredphotography.
InfraredmarkonanyCanonlensissituated
ina positionwhereitwillofferthebestre-
sultbyusinginfraredfilmandinfrared
filter(suchasKodakIR135andWratten
FilterNo.87).bothhavinga maximum
sensitivityata wavelengthofapproximately
8000A.Therefore,itisappropriatetoshift
about1/3oftheamountto"R"when
using,say,KodakPlusX orregular-
panchromaticfilmwitha Wrattenfilteror
aboutNo.25.
DESCRIPTIONSHowtotakecareofyourlens
1.Lensesshouldnotbechangedindirectsunlight.Turnyourbacktothesunandholdthe
cameraintheshadowofyourbody.
2.Alwayskeepthemountingflangeofyourcamerafreefromdustordirt.Afterdis-
mounting,yourlensshouldbecoveredwiththedustcapinstantlytoprotectthehelicoid,
whichisthemostimportantpartofthelens.
1.Nevertouchthelenswithyourfinger.Incaseitbecomesnecessarytoremovedust
fromthesurface,usea fine,softbrushorreliablelenstissue.Iffurthercleaningis
necessaryforremovingfingermarks,etc.wraplenscleaningtissueorlint-freecottoncloth
ontipofa stickandmoistalcohol(mixedwithetherwhenpossible)andwipethe
surfaceina gentlecircularmotionfromcentertoperimeter.Neverwipewithexcessive
pressureoryoumightscratchthesurface.
4.Donotstoreyourlensinhotandorhumidplaces.Thebestwaytostoreyourlensisto
keepitinanair-tightcontainerordesiccatorwithmoistureabsorbentsuchassilicagel.
5.Neversubjectthelenstoa sudden,extremechangeintemperatureorlenscracksmayresult,

Showingthedifferences
incamerarangewhen
picturesarelakenFrom
thesamepositionbut
usingdifferentfocal
lengthlenses.
Indifferentlenses,thereisa varianceinthedegreeofclarityandalsointheirfocallengths.Thereis,
however,a muchmoreimportantreasonforinterchanginglenses:thatis.totakeadvantageofthe
differenceintheirrangesaccordingtotheirrespectivefocallengths.LetUSexaminethismoreclosely.
Alloftheabovephotoshavebeentakenfromthesamepositionbutusinglensesofdifferentfocal
lengths.TheshorterthefocallengthofChelens,thewidertheareacoveredbythepicture,but
theobjectsinthosepicturesallappearsmall.Thelongerthefocallength,thenarrowerthefield
coveredbytheresultingpicture,butinthesecasestheimageitselfappearsbigger.Theuseoflenses
ofdifferentfocallengthsthenbecomesa necessity.Torinstance,whenwetakephotosofa group
ofpeopleina smallroomagainsta blankwallbackgroundorwhentakinga pictureofa largebuilding
whenitisnotpossibletomovebackthenecessarydistance,theuseofa lensofsmallfocallength
isofadvantage.Ontheotherhandwhenpickingouta subjectfroma largearea,anditisnot
possibletogetcloser,theuseofa longfocusortelescopiclensisa beneficialadaption.

2.PERSPECTIVE
Considerationofper-
spectivewhentaking
photosfromvarious
distancesandkeeping
theforegroundthesame
size.
Theabovephotographsshowthedifferenteffectsobtainedbyusingvariousfocallengthlenses.Using
thesameforegroundsubject,variationsinthesizeanddepthofthesurroundingobjectsarcproduced.
Lookingattheseyoucanseethatwiththesamesubject,thereisa differentbackgroundeffectineach
case.Theshorterthefocuslengthofthelens,greateristheexaggerationintheappearanceofthe
foregroundinrelationtothesurroundingarea.Againtherearemarkeddifferencesinthedegreeof
thebackground.Withthelongdistancelens,thebackgroundareaisstrongerandclearlyadjustedin
relationtotheforegroundgivinganeffectofsolidnesstothepicture.Again,accordingtothe
sizeofthelensopening,therearedifferencesinthedepthoftheobjectbeingphotographed.This
hasadvantages,forinstance,inproducingdifferenteffectswithbackgroundfocus,orinusinga
maximumopeninglenstofacilitatetakingpicturesunderunfavorableconditions.Byselectingthe
appropriatelensandbytakingadvantageofitscharacteristics,youcanimprovetheexcellence
ofyourpicture.
VIEWFINDERvsPARALLAXADJUSTMENT
Asthebuilt-inviewfinderofthecamerahasnodeviceforparallaxadjustment,a separateview-
finderisrecommendedforalllensesexceptthosewithnormalfocallength(50mmand35mmfor
CanonCameraModelVTand50mmforalltheotherCanonCameras).A varietyofviewfinders
areavailableforCanonLenses.Amongthem are:
(1)ForusewithCanonCameraModelVTandlatermodels:ZOOMFINDERS"S"and
"L"SPECIALVIEWFINDERSV,LUMI-FIELDVIEWFINDERS.Whenusedon
theCamerathesefindersaremechanicallycoupledtothebuilt-inrangefinderofthe
cameraandparallaxisautomaticallycompensatedasthelensisfocused.
(2)ForCanonCameraModelIV-S2.II-SandallothercameraspriortoModelVT.use
SPECIALVIEWFINDERV,withFINDERCOUPLER,whichhasparallaxcompensating
adjustment.SincecameraspriortomodelVTarc notmechanicallycoupledtothe
viewfindersforparallax,youhavetoadjusttheparallaxmanuallybyadjustingthe
parallaxcompensatingscaleoftheFINDERCOUPLERtomatchthereadingon
theDISTANCESCALEofthelens.Bydoingso,thefieldyouseethroughthe
finderwillbeidenticalwithwhatthelenswillregisteronfilm.
