Indicator. It has been manufactured with
quality and reliability at our factory in Webb
City, MO USA. This Indicator has been tested
before leaving our factory to insure accuracy
and dependability for years to come.
This manual is provided to guide you through
installation, operation and maintenance of
your indicator. Please read it thoroughly
before attempting to install or operate your

SITE PREPARATION REQUIREMENTS
The 728 Weight Indicator is a precision weight indicating instrument. As with any precision
instrument, it requires an acceptable environment to operate at its peak performance and
reliability. This section is provided to assist you in obtaining such an environment.
Electrical Power
The 728 indicators has been designed to operate from a 115 VAC 50/60 Hz (optional 230 VAC
50/60 Hz) AC adapter. Note that a optional AC adapter is required for operation at 230 VAC.
CAUTION! - To avoid electrical hazard and possible damage to the indicator,
DO NOT, under any circumstance, cut, remove, alter, or in any way bypass the
power cord grounding prong.
On models requiring 230 VAC power, it is the responsibility of the customer to have a
qualified electrician install the proper power cord plug which conforms to national electrical
codes and local codes and ordinances.
The power outlet for the indicator should be on a separate circuit from the distribution panel.
This circuit should be dedicated to the exclusive use of the indicator. The wiring should
conform to national and local electrical codes and ordinances and should be approved by the
local inspector to assure compliance.
To prevent electrical noise interference, make certain all other wall outlets for use with air
conditioning and heating equipment, lighting or other equipment with heavily inductive loads,
such as welders, motors and solenoids are on circuits separate from the indicator. Many of
these disturbances originate within the building itself and can seriously affect the operation of
the instrument. These sources of disturbances must be identified and steps must be taken to
prevent possible adverse effects on the instrument. Examples of available alternatives include
isolation transformers, power regulators, uninterruptible power supplies, or simple line filters.
PRECAUTIONS
In general, the 728 indicator will perform well
within a temperature range of
14 to 104 °F (-10 to +40 °C ).
In order to keep cooling requirements to a
minimum, the indicator should be placed out
of direct sunlight and to provide adequate air
circulation, keep the area around the indicator
clear.
Make certain the instrument is not directly in
front of a heating or cooling vent. Such a
location will subject the indicator to sudden
temperature changes which may result in
unstable weight readings.
Insure that the indicator has good, clean AC
power and is properly grounded.
In areas subject to lightning strikes, additional
protection to minimize lightning damage, such
as surge suppressors, should be installed.

INSTALLATION
Before beginning installation of your 728 weight indicator, make certain that the instrument has
been received in good condition. Carefully remove the instrument from the shipping carton
and inspect it for any evidence of damage (such as exterior dents and scratches) that may
have taken place during shipment. Keep the carton and packing material for return shipment if
it should become necessary. It is the responsibility of the purchaser to file all claims for any
damages or loss incurred during transit, unless this responsibility has been accepted by the
seller in its proposal.
Should your 728 come already installed on a scale, the following information describing the
installation of the instrument does not apply to you.
If the 728 didn't come mounted on a column, decide whether it is to be mounted on a wall or
will use the desktop stand. Refer to Figure No. 1 for illustrations of the wall and desktop
mounting.
The 728 can be mounted on a wall using the two (2) slotted holes located in the mounting
bracket and two (2) #10 screws placed 2.00 inches apart on the wall. First, remove the two (2)
screws below the slotted holes on the back of the indicator. Next, place the large end of the
slotted holes over the screw heads in the wall and gently pull down to secure the display.
The 728 can also be placed on a desktop using the included desk stand assembly. To use the
desk stand, remove the two (2) screws below the slotted holes on the back of the indicator.
Slide the indicator over the two (2) screws in the desk stand and using the two (2) screws
removed from the back of the indicator, secure the indicator to the desk stand.

Regardless of how and where you mount your 728, it should be in a safe area where it will not
be in the way of normal traffic. The location chosen should be free of temperature extremes
and water. It should be in a location where the display is easily viewed and is not subject to
direct sunlight. The indicator should be mounted such that it is within easy reach of the
operator. If wall mounted, make certain that the structure and mounting bolts are of sufficient
strength to support the 728. The mounting bracket should be securely fastened to the wall or
column top so that it cannot break loose from the mounting surface. After the 728 has been
mounted, it may be connected to the plug-in power supply.

LOAD CELL CONNECTION
The load cell cable is terminated via a 9-pin connector on the side of the indicator. Figure No.
2 shows the pin identification for the load cell connector. Make certain that the pins are
correctly identified before soldering a wire to them.
Make certain that the connector retaining screws are used to hold the load cell mating
connector securely to the connector on the side of the indicator.

KEYPAD FUNCTIONS
The 728 indicator is equipped with a 5-key keypad. The keypad is used to enter commands
and data into the instrument. This section describes each key along with its normal function. It
is helpful to refer to the actual instrument while reading this section.
The membrane keypad is not to be operated with pointed objects (pencils,
pens, fingernails, etc). Damage to keypad resulting from this practice is NOT
covered under warranty.

The following describes the use of each key.
Pressing this key will apply power to the instrument and turn on the indicator
display. If the indicator is already on, pressing this key will zero the scale.

Pressing this key when the indicator is on will remove power to the instrument.
The normal display mode is the gross weight mode where the display shows the
total weight on the scale platform. Note: In the gross weight mode NET
annunciator is turned off. If you are in the net display mode and wish to return to
the gross weight display mode, simply press the GROSS key.
Your scale has a pushbutton tare feature that allows you to enter tare weights up
to three least significant digits. Pressing the TARE key will cause the currently
displayed gross weight to be stored as new tare weight and cause the indicator to
enter the net weight display mode. The net weight display mode is indicated by
turning on the NET annunciator. For example, if the display indicated a gross
weight of 2.0 lb and you press the TARE key, the 2.0 lb would be entered as the
new tare weight value. The display would enter the net Weight mode and subtract
the 2.0 lb tare value from the 2.0 lb gross weight displaying a net weight of 0.0 lb.
If you added another 2.0 lb to the platform, the weight display would indicate 2.0
lb of net weight. Pressing the GROSS key would return the display to the gross
mode and it would display 4.0 lb. This tare weight feature is often used to
subtract the empty container weight or other unwanted fixed weight values from
the weight reading.
To display a net weight without entering a new tare value, simply press the NET
key. The NET annunciator will be turned on and the display would show the net
weight (gross weight less the stored tare weight). If there is no currently stored
valid tare weight the scale will ignore this key.
ANNUNCIATORS
Note that annunciators are turned on to indicate that the display is in the mode corresponding
to the annunciator label or that the status indicated by the label is active. Some annunciators
are flashed on and off to signal that the 728 is waiting for an input from the keypad for use by
the feature indicated by the annunciator.
ZERO
The ZERO annunciator is turned on to indicate that the weight is within +/- 1/4 division of the
center of zero.
NET
The NET annunciator is turned on to show that the displayed weight is the net weight which is
the gross weight less the tare weight.
MOTION
The MOTION annunciator is turned on when the weight display is in motion. This means that
the change in successive weight samples is greater than the motion limits selected during
setup and calibration of the 728.

SETUP AND CALIBRATION
Your 728 indicator has been thoroughly tested and calibrated before being shipped to you. If
you receive the indicator attached to a scale, calibration is not necessary. If connecting the 728
to a scale for the first time or recalibration is necessary, proceed as indicated below.
During the setup and calibration process it will be necessary to enter operational parameters
via the 728 keypad. Pressing the
NET key will cause the data entered or displayed to be
retained and the 728 will advance to the next prompt. The cursor location is identified by the
blinking character and can be advanced to the left to the next position by pressing the
TARE
key. Pressing the GROSS key will change the blinking character to the next value .

To begin Setup and Calibration:
With the unit turned off, remove the 8 screws holding the front panel to the rear enclosure.
Carefully separate the front panel from the rear enclosure exposing the 728 main board. On
the upper right back of the board, locate the calibration switch (S1) located.. Press and hold S1
in. Next, press and release the ON/ZERO key, then release the S1. This will turn the unit on
and place it in the calibration mode. When the i

the GROSS key until the proper scale interval (1, 2 or 5) is displayed then press the NET key
to store the displayed value and proceed to the next prompt.
NOTE! Although the values of 1 through 9 are displayed for “int=”, only 1, 2 or 5 are accepted.

number of digits to the right of the decimal point is displayed then press the NET key to store
this setting and proceed to the next step. Numbers zero (0) through three (3) are available and
correspond to the following decimal point locations:

proper digit at the blinking location then press the TARE key to step to the left and the next
digit location. Repeat the process until all four (4) digits of the scale's capacity have been
entered. Should you make a mistake and press the TARE key with an incorrect digit entered,
it will be necessary to repeatedly press the TARE key until the blinking character returns to the
proper location, then use the GROSS key to enter the correct digit. After all four (4) digits have
been correctly entered; press the NET key to store the capacity and advance to the next step.

Load Calibration Weight

=which is a prompt for the entry of the calibration weight
value and placement of this amount of test weights on the scale platform. If the scale has
been previously calibrated and you do not wish to change the calibration setting, simply press
the NET key twice without taking any other action and the internal calibration factor will be
retained. If, however, the scale needs to be calibrated press the NET key once and proceed
as follows:
1 . Place the calibrated test weights on the scale platform. It is recommended that a
minimum of 50% of the scale's capacity be used, but 70% to 100% is preferred.
2. Determine the exact amount of test weight placed on the scale platform and enter this
value into the 728 by using the GROSS and TARE keys in the same manner used to
enter the scale's capacity. Verify that the numbers entered are the same as the total
weight of test weights, and the least significant digit agrees with the scale interval.
3. Press the

The calculated calibration factor is now stored in the 728's nonvolatile memory.
Zero Tracking Range

Automatic Zero Tracking range. This is the value in scale divisions that will be automatically
zeroed off. That is, if the scale divisions are 0.5 and the zero tracking is set to 3, the 728 will
automatically zero weights of 1.5 or less. Values of 0, 1, 2, 3 and 0.5 division are available for
the zero tracking range. Use the GROSS key to step through these available values. Once
the proper value is shown press the NET key to store the value.
Four Percent Zero Tracking Range Limit

on the Automatic Zero Tracking feature. This 4% limit is a requirement by Canadian Weights
and Measures, but at the time this was printed, is not a US requirement. Press the NET key
then use the GROSS key to enter either YES, (use the 4% limit) or NO, (do not use the 4%
limit) and press the NET key.

Four (4) levels of filtering (0, 1, 2 and 3) are available. They are as follows:
0 = NO FILTERING
1 = MINIMAL FILTERING (sample rate = 2)
2 = MODERATE FILTERING (sample rate = 1)
3 = CUSTOM FILTERING
Three (3) custom filtering is used when zero (0), one (1) or two (2) are inadequate. Press the
NET key then use the GROSS key to select the desired level of filtering then press the NET
key to save the setting.

If you select three (3), custom filtering, the 728 will respond with F

the filter level. The filter level is a number from 1 to 99 that corresponds to the level of filtering
with 99 being the greatest filtering and 1 the least. Use the GROSS and TARE keys to select
the filter weight level, then press the NET key to save the setting.

and the current break range setting. The break range is a
number from 1 to 99 that corresponds to the number of division change to break out of filtering.
Use the GROSS and TARE keys to select the break range value then press the NET key to
save the setting.
Your 728 should arrive from the factory with the proper filter setting already entered. Please
check with your scale service technician should you wish to change the programmed filter
weight and break range.
Motion (Unstable) Range

Changes in weight exceeding the selected number of divisions will cause the stable indicator
to turn off. Values from zero (0) to nine (9) divisions may be selected after pressing the NET
key by pressing the GROSS key. Once the correct value is shown press the NET key to save
the setting.

rate may be set from a minimum of one (1) sample per second to a maximum of twelve (12)
samples per second in one (1) sample per second intervals. After pressing the NET key use
the GROSS and TARE keys until the desired sample rate is displayed then press the NET key
to save the setting.
The indicator will perform a display lamp test, display the software revision number then the
gross weight. The setup and calibration process has been completed. Remove the power from
the indicator and re-assemble for use.
POWER CONNECTION
To apply power to your indicator, connect the power cable's connector (round) into the
indicator and then connect the power cable's electrical connector (square) into a 115VAC
50/60 Hz (optional 230VAC 50/60 Hz) outlet. Your indicator is now ready for operation.
OPERATION
After applying power, make certain that the scale platform is empty, then press the ON/ZERO
key. After a second or so the display should indicate a zero weight with the ZERO annunciator
turned on. Weighing may now begin. If the display does not indicate zero, press the
ON/ZERO key again to zero the weight display.
SETUP REVIEW
The 728 Setup Review mode allows you to review the operational parameters, but does not
allow you to change them. To enter the setup review mode, simply turn the 728 off then press
and hold the NET key then press the ON key. The 728 will display the value for the power up

ERROR AND STATUS DISPLAYS
The 728 is equipped with a diagnostic software program that tests various portions of the
instrument's circuitry and verifies proper operation. Should a problem be detected, an error or
status message will be displayed alerting the operator to that condition. The following lists

BEFORE YOU CALL FOR SERVICE
The 728 has been designed to provide you with years of trouble-free operation. In spite of this,
trouble sometimes happen. Before calling for service assistance you should make some
initial checks to verify that a problem does exist. The following describes several types of
symptoms along with suggested remedies.
Problem Possible Solutions
Display does not turn on Is DC power supply cable plugged into 728? Is AC
power adapter plugged into wall receptacle? Check
wall receptacle for proper AC power. Try another
electrical appliance in the same receptacle, does it
work? Check the circuit breaker. Has there been a
power failure of any kind?
Incorrect weight displayed Has the instrument been calibrated? Insure that the
scale platform isn't touching an adjacent object. Have
proper operation procedures been followed?
Indicator will not display Refer to Error Display section and make certain that

CARE AND CLEANING
1. DO NOT submerge indicator in water, pour or spray water directly on instrument.
2. DO NOT use acetone, thinner or other volatile solvents for cleaning.
3. DO NOT expose equipment to temperature extremes.
4. DO NOT place equipment in front of heating/cooling vents.
5. DO clean the indicator with a damp soft cloth and mild non-abrasive detergent.
6. DO remove power before cleaning with a damp cloth.
7. DO provide clean AC power and adequate protection against lightning damage.
8. DO keep the surroundings clear to provide clean and adequate air circulation.
