1 - INTRODUCTION
The compact 42BJ ULTRA known as the type 42BJ is available
in 3 sizes with a choice of 3 motor drives and is capable of air
conditioning rooms ranging from 25 m2to 50 m2in area.
Its main components are a three speed fan motor, a high-effi-
ciency air filter, a fresh air supply fitted with a constant fresh
air flow controller, a chilled water cooling coil and either a hot
water heating coil or a shielded electric heater.
Flexible, thermally and acoustically insulated discharge and
return ducts are installed on site, connecting the module to one
or more plenums in the false ceiling. These feed unobtrusive
linear ceiling diffusers (typically Carrier Moduboot 35BD/35SR
units) supplying the room or zone where air conditioning is
required.
The complete system comprises one or more Carrier air or
water-cooled chillers connected to one or more air handlers
supplying fresh air to the 42BJ ULTRA. These may be installed
in underfloor voids or above false ceilings, preferably in corri-
dors, where they are connected to hot and chilled water circuits
as well as the fresh air supply.
This simplifies maintenance, since these circuits are normally
installed in corridors and halls, and therefore never pass through
air conditioned spaces. Only the passive elements of the system,
that is the 35BD/35SR diffusers, are within occupied spaces.
Nowadays the noise level, or rather the lack of noise, is a deci-
ding factor in the selection of an air conditioning system. Low
noise was a key objective in the design of the 42BJ ULTRA. In
addition its available static pressure allows the unit to be instal-
led well away from the air conditioned space.
Low noise, remoteness from the space which it serves allied
with easy maintenance are key attributes influencing the selec-
tion of an air conditioning system.

1.1 - Air quality
Fresh air
All ULTRA models have a fresh air inlet with an air flow
controller for precise control of the fresh air admitted to com-
ply with local health standards. It is important to choose an air
flow controller to suit the room occupancy conditions.
In places where air conditioning is essential, such as totally
enclosed or windowless rooms, or premises with high heat
gains, the controllable fresh air supply on the ULTRA will make
a significant contribution to achieving the required air quality.
Air filtration
Cleanliness of the air supply is one of the primary concerns of
air treatment, and is the most basic and important measure of
the air quality which is essential to our health. The air we
breathe contains a wide diversity of particles, pollens and dusts,
all possible allergens, which have varying effects upon the
health of individuals.
These particles come from many sources both inside and outside
the building. Air filtration protects not only people against the
health hazards of these pollutants but also furnishings and equip-
ment against the contamination and damage they can cause.
The ULTRA is fitted with a high-performance air filter.
1.2.3 - Operating environment
The 42BJ 8.3 has been designed for internal application in
“urban” conditions having a non-corrosive, dust free and non-
marine environment.
The concentrations of the following chemicals must not be
exceeded in any event:
• SO2< 0,02 ppm
• H2S < 0.02 ppm
• NO, NO2< 1 ppm
• NH3< 6 ppm
• N2O < 0.25 ppm
1.2 - Carrier QUALITY PLUS
The Carrier QUALITY PLUS philosophy embraces the product
itself, its conception, its design and the integrity of its declared
performance (proven in rigorous laboratory tests) as well as the
manufacturing processes, materials and components used to
create the product.
Carrier has had LRQA quality certification to ISO 9001 stan-
dards ever since 1989.

2 - FEATURES
The modular design of the 42BJ ULTRA allows it to be used
efficiently to meet the heating, cooling and air conditioning
requirements of medium-sized rooms. With an overall depth of
only 270 mm (except size 4.7, depth: 345 mm), these units are
easily installed in voids above suspended ceilings or below
false floors.
Their casings are built of 10/10 galvanised sheet steel lined
with 13 mm of fibre wool which in turn is protected by a layer
of erosion-resistant neoprene.
The fan motor access door is coated with 13 mm of fibre wool
and the air filter access panel is covered with 5 mm of foam.
NOTE:
Operating limits: air discharge temperature 12°C when the
unit is installed in an area with an ambient temperature of
27°C dry bulb and a relative humidity of 70%.

ULTRA modules are designed and tested for 16 bar operating pressure. The total operating circuit of the ULTRA is guaranteed for an ope-
rating pressure of 10 bar.
Contact your local Carrier representative for advice if an application requires an operating pressure of 16 bar.

3 - SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
3.1 - General
Installing, commissioning and servicing of the various compo-
nents which make up the different controls loops can be dange-
rous unless certain aspects of the installation, such as the pre-
sence of mains electricity and hot or chilled water in the air
conditioning equipment, are taken into account.
Only specially trained and qualified technicians and installers
who have been fully trained on the product concerned are
authorised to install, commission and service this equipment.
During servicing work, it is essential to apply all the recom-
mendations and instructions given in service leaflets, on labels
or in the instructions delivered with the equipment, and to com-
ply with any other relevant instructions.

3.2 - Precautions against electrocution
Only electricians who are qualified to the level recommended
by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) in its
standard IEC 364, corresponding to Europe HD 384, France
NFC 15 100 and UK IEE Wiring Regulations, may have access
to electrical components. In particular it is obligatory to discon-
nect all electrical power supplies to the unit and its accessories
before carrying out any work. Disconnect the main power sup-
ply with an isolating device (not supplied by Carrier).
IMPORTANT:
The components, which make up the different controls loops
described in this manual include electronic items. As such,
they may generate or be harmed by electromagnetic interfe-
rence unless they are installed and used in accordance with
these instructions. The components making up these controls
systems conform to the requirements of electromagnetic com-
patibility in residential and industrial areas. They also com-
ply with the low-voltage directive.
3.3 - General installation recommendations
IMPORTANT:
In general units fitted with controls loops must have an isola-
ting device upstream (for example a double-pole circuit brea-
ker). If necessary, an easily operated emergency stop device
(such as a punch-button switch) must cut off the power to all
equipment. These safety devices shall be sized and installed in
accordance with IEC Recommendation 364, corresponding to
Europe HD 384, France NFC 15 100 and UK IEE Wiring
Regulations. These devices are not supplied by Carrier.
In general terms the following rules must be applied:
- Units must be provided with over voltage protection upstream
(not supplied by Carrier)

- Units must be protected by a differential type earth leakage
current device (not supplied by Carrier)
- The power disconnexion device must be clearly labelled to
identify which items of equipment are connected to it.
- The wiring of the components which make up the different
control systems must be carried out in accordance with the
latest rules and regulations by professional installers.
- The power supply cable must be double insulated and fixed
using an appropriate cable clamp The cable must be clamped
on the outer insulation.
- The controls loop components must be installed in an environ-
ment, which conforms to their index of protection (IP).
3.4 - Conformity
This equipment has been declared to be in conformity with the
main requirements of the directive by virtue of using the follo-
wing standards:
- Electromagnetic compatibility: 89/336/EEC
- Low-voltage directive: 73/23/EEC

4 - APPLICATION DETAILS
4.1 - Multi-zone buildings with varying loads
When drawing up the thermal load schedule, the following
thermal gains and losses in the peripheral areas of the building
must be taken into account:
• Losses through outside walls and glazing,
• Solar gains, and heat gains from lighting, people and equip-
ment (computers, copiers etc.).
The concept of the 42BJ ULTRA is based on controlling two
separate fluids to compensate for variations in the cooling and
heating loads imposed in the peripheral areas of the building.
These two fluids are chilled air and heated air which are both
generated within the ULTRA and delivered to strategically
positioned diffusers.
The sensible cooling load which has to be taken into account in
order to counter solar gains, and heat gains from lighting and
the building's occupants, varies with the orientation and occu-
pancy of the building (Fig. 1). Transmission gains, on the other
hand, depend only upon the temperature difference between the
interior of the building and the outdoors (Fig. 2).
The outdoor air temperature, time of day, exposure and season
together enable the required cooling and heating capacities to
be calculated. Thus it is known that in the northern hemisphere
the maximum thermal gains for rooms with easterly or westerly
exposures will occur in July or August. Tpipe with southerly
exposures will have their maximum thermal gains between
September and November, depending upon the amount of
external glazing and the type of building construction. The
combined effects of sun, lights and people can change a heating
load into a cooling load, even in winter with a very low outdoor
temperature.
These variable cooling and heating loads (Fig. 3) show the need
for a system which uses two fluids in such a way that it can
maintain acceptable conditions in all areas of the building at all
times.
4.2 - Cooling
Supply air from the ULTRA cools and mixes with outdoor air
from a central air handler, and is then ducted to diffusers (typi-
cally 35BD/35SR) located in the false ceiling of the room.
An appropriate volume of chilled, dehumidified air is introdu-
ced into the room to compensate for the total heat gains from
the sun, people, lights, equipment and cooling losses.
The ULTRA automatically responds to variations in the inter-
nal and external loads by varying its flow of cooled air so as to
stabilise the temperature in the air conditioned space at the
desired level.

4.3 - Heating
When heat losses exceed the internal gains from people, lights,
equipment etc., the temperature of the supply air from the
ULTRA increases in proportion to keep the room temperature
at the selected setpoint.
4.4 - Air distribution
The 42BJ is installed close to sources of hot water, chilled
water and outdoor ventilation air. It blows warm or cold air
through small-diameter flexible ducts to Carrier slotted linear
diffusers. These diffusers make use of an air flow principle
known as the Coanda effect.
Since the total pressure in the air stream remains constant, an
increase in dynamic pressure brings about a simultaneous
reduction in static pressure. The speed at which the air stream
leaves the diffuser is relatively high and thus its static pressure
is low. It therefore tends to keep close to the ceiling. Its speed
tends to reduce along the stream as it mixes with the room air.
The temperature of the stream of mixed air is such that the
room occupants feel no sensation of draught.
The design of the Carrier linear diffuser ensures that the
Coanda effect is maintained with the air flow as low as 15% of
nominal.
Each diffuser is fitted with an acoustic plenum.

5 - TOTAL SYSTEM
5.1 - Air conditioning plant
An air conditioning system which uses 42BJ modules may
comprise a central air handler to deal with outdoor air, one or
more liquid chillers, a distribution system for primary air from
the air handler, one or more heating devices (boilers or heat
pumps, or even the high-performance coils in the 42BJ itself
which can provide the ideal heating capacity even at low tem-
perature), hot and chilled water distribution systems, 42BJ
modules, and diffusers to deliver conditioned air to the room or
zone concerned.
5.2 - Liquid chiller
Any Carrier liquid chiller can be used with 42BJ modules.
Chilled water for the 42BJ modules and central air handler can
be supplied from the same chiller.
The chiller is selected on the basis of the overall cooling and
heating load estimates for the building (in kW).
For example, if the total cooling load is 650 kW the chiller will
be selected to deliver this capacity taking into account the
concurrency of all the heating and cooling factors mentioned.
5.3 - Ventilation air handler
The central air handler which provides the total fresh air supply
to each 42BJ module must be capable of delivering an air flow
equal to the sum of the fresh air flows from each ULTRA. The
standard specifies a fresh air flow of 7 to 8.3 l/s (25 to 30 m3/h)
for each occupant of the air conditioned space. Fresh air will be
supplied to each 42BJ ULTRA at a constant temperature and
rate of flow, and the temperature will only be readjusted if
necessary at seasonal changeovers.
These air handlers are usually monobloc units. That is, they are
supplied ex-factory as a fully assembled unit complete with a
chilled water coil, a hot water coil or an electric heater, and a
return air filter with an efficiency rating that satisfies local
regulations and environmental standards regarding air supplied
to the type of premises concerned. An integral control system
monitors and maintains the supply air temperature.

6 - PRINCIPAL COMPONENTS OF THE 42BJ
The basic module consists of a 3-speed centrifugal fan motor
with single wheel, forward-curved blade and single or double
inlet. Low noise was a key objective in the design of the fan
motor. In addition its high available static pressure allows the
ULTRA to be installed well away from the air conditioned space.
NOTE:
In order to simplify maintenance, the fan motor is held in
position by three lugs and one screw. Electrical connections
use a quick connector to prevent wiring errors and signifi-
cantly reduce maintenance time.
6.1 - Fresh air controller
The 42BJ ULTRA can be fitted with a constant fresh air flow
controller allowing the number of air changes to be controlled
accurately. It is vital to choose the correct constant fresh air
flow controller for the use to which the room or zone concer-
ned will be put.
The following range of controllers is available:
- 8.3 l/s or 30 m3/h (-10%; +20%)
- 16.6 l/s or 60 m3/h (-10%; +20%)
The fresh air supply is located upstream of the water coil. The
125 mm collar which houses the flow controller is made of
ABS.
The 16.6 l/s or 60 m3/h fresh air controller may be modified on
site by relocating or removing two plastic restricters in order to
increase its constant fresh air flow capacity to a maximum of
44.4 l/s or 160 m3/h.
A label on the 42BJ shows how to readjust the two plastic res-
tricters.
IMPORTANT:
If the ULTRA is fitted with a return air temperature sensor,
the constant fresh air flow rate must not exceed 50% of the
air flow rate delivered by the unit at minimum speed.
NOTE:
To operate correctly, the 8.3 l/s or 30 m3/h constant fresh air
flow controller requires a differential pressure in the range
50 Pa to 200 Pa. The 16.6 l/s or 60 m3/h constant fresh air
controller requires a differential pressure in the range 70 Pa
to 200 Pa.
6.2 - Filter and access
The 42BJ ULTRA is fitted with a high efficiency filter.

6.3 - Water coil
The water coil has aluminium fins which are expansion-bonded.
Water inlet and outlet connections are threaded 1/2" or 3/8" gas
(size 2.6). Air purge valves are stan±dard. The coil is integral
with the drain pan and coil access door to simplify removal for
service.
Coils available are for two-pipe systems with changeover or use
with electric heater and for four-pipe systems.
6.4 - Aluminium condensate pan
The main pan is below the coil with an auxiliary below the
valves. The monobloc construction prevents leaks. The coil is
on the suction side of the fan to facilitate drainage, and conden-
sate is drained through an opening at the base of the coil pro-
tection plate.
The auxiliary pan is insulated with 4 mm foam. The drain stub
itself has an external diameter of 16 mm.
6.5 - Electric heater - size 1.6

• The heater is equipped with two safety devices:
a) An automatically controlled integrated safety thermostat
with a trigger temperature of 75°C.
When the trigger temperature is reached, a resistance heater
is automatically energised and prevents automatic resetting,
if the system is energised, but has insufficient air flow.
Reset is achieved by suppressing the supply voltage of the
electric heater. The safety thermostat protects the unit from
overheating, generally the result of electricity passing
through the heater when there is insufficient air flow.
b) A thermal fuse tripping at 150°C.
NOTE: The minimum discharge air flow of 64 l/s (230 m3/h)
is required to avoid damage to the electric heaters.
CAUTION: It is vital to disconnect the 42BJ from the general
power supply before working on the electric heater.
6.6 - Shielded electric heater - sizes 2.6 and 4.7
Shielded heater type with spiral fins
This is a shielded electric heater with spiral fins. It has two
stages, each of 800 W (+5%; -10%) wired in parallel. The elec-
tric heaters are connected within an IP407 galvanised sheet
steel casing which is fitted with a packing gland to admit the
power supply cable.
The heater unit is fitted with a manually reset safety thermo-
stat. This normally closed contact is triggered by a rise in tem-
perature to 112°C (+0; -16).
The safety thermostat protects the unit from overheating, gene-
rally the result of electricity passing through the heater when
there is insufficient air flow. The thermostat can be reset
without dismantling the unit. Simply remove the protective
cover from the terminal box (casing) on the heater and press the
small plastic rod located in the middle of the thermostat.
However, if the safety thermostat is triggered, it is essential to
find and rectify the cause before resetting.

CAUTION: It is vital to disconnect the 42BJ from the general
power supply before carrying out any work on the electric
heater.
The heating resistors and casing form a single plug-in unit to
simplify dismantling for maintenance purposes.
NOTE: The electric heater can be rewired on site to use a
single 800 W resistor. For this, remove the two copper connec-
tion strips. A label attached to the 42BJ shows how the two
heating resistors should be rewired.
7 - CARRIER ELECTROMECHANICAL CONTROLLER
7.1 - Description
The ULTRA may be fitted with an electromechanical controller
developed and tested by Carrier in our research and develop-
ment laboratories.
If this option is taken, each ULTRA then has a water flow
control valve or valves of the “on/off ” type, flexible water
pipes to simplify the connection of units to the primary hot
and/or chilled water circuits, and in appropriate cases a power
relay for controlling the electric heater.
This option also includes a male-female quick connect terminal
block for connecting the various cables that come from the
three speed fan motor, the valve actuators, the electric heater
power relay and, if appropriate, from the heating/cooling chan-
geover configuration switch for ULTRAs fitted with a single
“hot or cold” coil.
The male-female quick connect terminal block and the electric
heater power relay are mounted on DIN rail and protected by an
ABS cover.
The DIN rail is made large enough to accept a bipolar discon-
necting switch and integral fuse holder (please contact your
Carrier representative).
The quick connect terminal block and flexible water pipes will
be appreciated when servicing work is being carried out, since
they enable service times to be significantly reduced.
Replacing or moving a unit becomes a simple matter.
A wall-mounted room thermostat can be supplied with the
ULTRA as an accessory. This thermostat will be connected
directly to the female side of the quick connect terminal block
(see section describing room thermostats).

7.3 - Technical specification for the heating/cooling
changeover switch
The heating/cooling changeover switch is designed to be instal-
led straight onto the couplings of the 3-port valves on the
ULTRA. It detects temperature changes in the fluid circulating
in the primary water circuit. A changeover switch operates
according to the water temperature in accordance with the dia-
gram below.

When a heating/cooling changeover switch is connected bet-
