components
listed
throughout
Chapter
5
should
be inspected
as
detailed elsewhere
in this
chapter
and
repaired, overhauled
or
replaced
as required.
Some
components,
however,
have a
time
or
life limit associated
with them,
and must
be
overhauled or replaced
on or before
the
specified
time
limit.
NOTE:
The
terms
overhaul and
replacement
as used
within
this section
are defined
as follows:
*
Overhaul
- Item may
be overhauled
as defined
in FAR 43.2
or it can
be replaced.
*
Replacement -
Item must be replaced
with a new item
or a serviceable
item that is
within its
service life and
time limits or has
been rebuilt as
defined in FAR
43.2.

provides

PROPELLER - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
1.
Description
and Operation
A.
The airplane is equipped with a two bladed,
fixed pitch metal propeller. Maintenance practices
consist
of propeller/spinner
removal and installation.
For information
beyond the scope
of this section, refer
to the applicable
McCauley Service
Manual.
2. Propeller and Spinner Removal/nstallation
A. Remove
Propeller
and Spinner
(Refer to Figure
201).
WARNING: EXERCISE CARE
WHEN WORKING WITH THE
PROPELLER. ENSURE
MAGNETO SWITCH
IS
IN THE OFF
POSITION BEFORE
TURNING
PROPELLER.
(1) Remove screws securing spinner to bulkheads. Remove spinner and cut safety wire from
propeller mounting bolts.
(2) Remove mounting
bolts and
remove forward bulkhead,
propeller, aft
bulkhead and spacer
from
crankshaft.
(3)
If starter ring gear is to be removed, loosen
alternator adjusting arm and slip alternator
belt off
of starter ring
gear before removing
gear.
NOTE: Remove
cowling and nosecap for access.
Refer to Chapter 71, Cowling
-
Maintenance Practices.
B. Install
Propeller and Spinner
(Refer to Figure 201).
(1) If starter ring gear
was removed, clean the
mating surfaces
of the ring gear and
crankshaft before
reassembly.
NOTE:
Ensure that
"O" identification mark
on starter ring gear
and "0" identification
mark on
crankshaft flange overlap.
Starter ring gear must be located correctly
on crankshaft
to assure proper alignment
of the timing marks
on the ring gear.
(2) Clean mating
surfaces
and assemble the
spacer, propeller
and bulkheads to crankshaft.
Assemble ensuring that
the serial number stamped
on
the side of the spacer
lines up with
either of the propeller blades.
NOTE:
It is not necessary
to align the spacer serial
number with a
specific blade. However,
the
spacer and propeller
have been
balanced as a
pair and must be
reinstalled
together.
(3) Secure propellerassembly
using
propeller bolts and
washers. Tighten bolts
in a crossing pattern
to 660-780 inch-pounds
(55-65 foot-pounds), safety wire and install
spinner.
(4) After securing
spinner to the bulkheads, check spinner
to aft bulkhead clearance.
(a) If not removed, remove upper
cowling and upper nosecap. Refer to Chapter
71, Cowling -
Maintenance Practices.
(b) Using a
0.03 inch feeler
gauge insert gauge between
spinner and aft
bulkhead to ensure
the gap is 0.03 inches or less.
NOTE: If
a gauge is not available, fabricate a
gauge from phenolic, aluminum or steel
that is 0.5 inches wide by
0.03 inches thick and 2.0
inches long.
(c)
Replacement of
the Aft Bulkhead
will be required if
gap is more than 0.03 inches.
(d) Adjust alternator belt tension. Refer to Chapter 24, Alternator - Maintenance Practices.
(e) Reinstall nosecap and cowling. Refer to Chapter 71, Cowling - Maintenance Practices.

Inspection, maintenance and parts requirements
for STC installations are not included in
this manual.
When
an STC installation
is incorporated on
the airplane, those portions
of the airplane
affected by the
installation
must be inspected in accordance with
the inspection program published by the
owner of the
STC. Since STC installations
may change
systems interface, operating
characteristics
and component
loads or stresses on
adjacent structures. Cessna provided inspection
criteria may not be valid for
airplanes with STC installations.

Serialization
A. All
Model
172 airplanes
are
issued a
serial number.
This
number
is assigned
as
construction
begins
and remains with
the
airplane throughout
its service
life. This serial number
appears
on the
airplane
ID plate,
located below
the horizontal
stabilizer,
and
on a trim
plate located
on the
pilot side
doorpost.
This
serial number
is used
to identify
changes within
the
text or within
an illustration.
The
absence
of
a serial number
in
text or illustration indicates
the material
is applicable
to all airplanes.
6. Material
Presentation
A.
This Maintenance
Manual
is available
on paper,
aerofiche
or Compact
Disc (CD/ROM).
The CD/ROM
contains
the
Maintenance
Manual, Illustrated
Parts
Catalog
Manual,
Wiring
Diagram Manual

Structural

Bulletins
A.

Bulletins
may
require special inspections
and authorize
modifications
to the
airplane
and/or
system.
As
service bulletins
are
issued, they
will be incorporated
in the next
scheduled
revision
and
noted
in the
Service
Bulletin
List, located previous
to
the Introduction.
The list
of service bulletins
utilizes
four columns
to summarize
information.

This service bulletin number
