GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING: STEAM IS VERY HOT, READ ALL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
To ensure safe operation when using your Steam Cleaner, make sure you follow basic
safety principles to reduce risk of personal injury, electric shock, and fire. Please read
the following instruction prior to operating this product and keep for future use.
1. Beware Children
Do not let children handle the Steamer. All onlooker should be away(at least 2 meters)
from your work area. Do not point the Steam plate or accessory at people or animals.
2. Guard Against Electric Shock
Keep the Steamer clear of the cable while working. Do not work on or near “live”
equipment or services.
3. Work Environment
Do not use the Steamer in rain or thunder storms. Do not use near flammable gases
or liquids.
4. Personal Safety
For your own safety, wear safety glasses or goggles and gloves.
5. Clothing
Wear suitable clothes. Avoid wearing loose clothing or jewelry.
6. Look After The Tool
When not in use store in a dry, high place or keep locked up out of children’s reach.
Use the tool only for its intended purposes.
7. Protect The Cable
Do not carry the tool by the cable or pull the cable to remove the plug from the mains
socket. Protect the cable from sharp objects, heat and oil; have it replaced if damaged.
8. Check Cable Before Use
Always ensure that the cable is not damaged.
9. Maintain Tools With Care
Inspect mains lead and extension leads periodically for damage, if damaged have
repair carried out by an authorised dealer. Keep handles dry and clean.
10. Disconnect Tools
When not in use or attaching hose/fitting always disconnect from mains supply.
11. Use Outdoor Extension Leads
Use an extension lead intended for the purpose.
12. Do not use tool when tired.
13. Check that tool is not damaged.
Before use check there is no damage to tool, if in doubt have tool checked over by an
authorised dealer.
14. Repairs
Always have repairs carried out by a qualified person for your safety.
15. Place boiler on a flat level surface do not at any time use the boiler in a tilted
position, this could cause the unit to fail.
16. The safety cutout will not protect a unit that has been left ON and on its side and
part filled with water.
17. The boiler will become hot during operation, move only with the handle.

17. Do not use the boiler near surfaces that may be damaged by the heat,
ie.below and to the side.
18. Steam is produced at 100oC. Be careful, wear protective clothing and protect
your hands with heat resistant gloves or mitts.
19. Always keep steam plate tilted away from face and body, beware of hot drips
and regularly empty collected condensation from plate - especially when
stripping ceilings and high areas.
20. Do not under any circumstances remove the hose or filler cap when in use.
21. Allow at least 5 minutes to cool down before you remove the filler cap.
22. Do not drag or try to move boiler by pulling either the hose or the mains lead.
23. Block boiler unit securely if using on stairs.
24. Take great care when working near electrical fittings, water must not enter
these.
25. Never stand on unit or hose.
26. Check the condition of wall plaster before starting work, the steam could
cause weak plaster to blow off the wall.
27. WARNING: DO NOT hold the steam plate over your head - beware very hot
drips.
28. The boiler becomes hot in use. Move only by using the carrying handle.
29. Never point hose or steam plate at anyone.
30. Never block the safety valve.
31. Never use outside when raining.
32. Do not overfill.
33. Allow to cool completely before emptying boiler.
34. Do not stand on boiler or hose.
35. Use only standard tap water. Never add detergents or chemicals.
36. Extreme care must be taken if the unit is used in bathrooms. Always be
aware of danger of electrocution from stored water in baths and sinks.
37. Never change tools when the unit is operating.
38. Always store upright.
39. It is recommended that a RCD ( residual current device) rated at 30mA is
fitted into the mains supply socket for added protection against electric
shock.

OPERATION
Your Challenge steamer cleaner is
designed for safe, fast removal of wallpaper
and can be used as a handheld cleaner to
enable the user to complete numerous
cleaning and other tasks around the home,
in the garden and in the car. Use the following
as a guide for the various accessories and
recommended uses.
5. Place the plate on another section of wallpaper while taking away the paper from the
previously steamed area, Dia4B. Repeat this operation more times if you are having
difficulties removing stubborn areas of paper.(Dia.4B)
6. Operation time with 3.5 litres of water is about 60 minutes.
7. Avoid the unit boiling dry.
8. Fill up approx. every 50 minutes, use pure water(without additives), allow at least 5
minutes to cool before refilling.
9. Always place the unit on a flat level surface.
10. Do not leave the steamplate unattended, possible drops of hot water may damage the
surrounding areas(always lift the unit and steamplate using the proper handle).
11. Attention! Always wait at least for 5 minutes after removing the plug before refilling the
unit.(BURN DANGER - steam is very hot).
Note: The unit gets hot in operation and may damage carpets, furniture etc. Always ensure
unit is placed on a stable solid base that is heat resistant. We suggest placing the boiler on
wooden board or tray for protection.
Safety Valve
The unit is fitted with a safety valve for your protection. If the valve operates steam will
escape from the cover(Item 1 from component dia.).
Disconnect immediately and allow to cool.
Check hose for blockage. Allow the valve to re-set(about one minute) and resume work.
Using the Accessories
Assembling the extension tube
1. Push the steam hose through the handle
(Part 11)and pull through enough to go through
the assembled extension tubes before
assembling the tubes. (Dia.5)
2. Insert the 2 extension tubes(Part 14)into the
joining piece(Part 15)making sure the clips are
fully home, then insert the hose through the
assembled tubes. (Dia.6)
3. Attach the end of the hose to the large
brush, then large brush, then clip the end of
the extension tube onto the large brush
(Part 9 ).(Dia.7)
Using the large brush
The brush can be used by itself or with the
bonnet as a carpet/upholstery cleaner.
Some carpets have stain resistant treatments,
which may be affected by steam cleaning.
Try cleaning a small area of carpet that is
normally unseen, then allow 24 hours to
check whether there have been any unusual
1. Connect one end of the hose to the steam
plate, and the other end to the steam outlet
on the boiler and tighten securely(Dia.1).
2. Plug in the mains power cable to the
element socket(Dia.2).
3. Check that the unit is not plugged in to
the mains supply(disconnected)before filling
or emptying it.
4. Remove filler cap, fill the container with
3.5litres of cold water(Dia.3). Use hot water if
you want to shorten the starting time, do not
overfill the container,(max 3.5 litres). If in doubt
about the quantity of water in the container
empty all water from tank and refill with 3.5 ltrs
of water.
Note: Do not use any additives or chemicals
in the stripper.
5. Connect the mains lead to a power supply
and wait for the water to get warm. The
steaming time depends on the quantity of
water put into the container(with 3.5 litres of
water it is about 12 minutes).
Using the steam plate
1. Connect hose to steam plate. Dia. 1
2. When the steam comes out (steam without pressure)from the plate, you can start working.
Note: A small amount of hot water will precede the steam, always shake this water out of
the steam plate into a bucket before commencing work.
3. Score the wallpaper slightly to be removed in a criss cross pattern acting in accordance
with the condition of the wall and of the paper(more or less, old paper, more layers, etc)
(Dia.4A).
4. Hold the steam plate to the wall and let the steam act for at least 10-20 seconds. We
recommend the use of a stout pair of gloves for operation.
Note: Always check on a small area of wall before commencing work.

effects on the carpet, e.g white streaks. If this happens DO NOT CONTINUE TO USE
Check with your carpet supplier for further advice. On wax treated surfaces and floors the
sheen may be removed by steam. Do not use on unsealed wood as this could destroy the
integrity of the wood grain. Always check a small area first or check with the manufacturer.
The large brush can be used in a number of ways and for a variety of purposes. You may
need to experiment to find the best method of cleaning. The two options of use are:
a) No bonnet being fitted over the large bristle
b) A bonnet being attached over the bristle
In general, option (a) is likely to be used on stone or tiled floors where there are areas
needing more vigorous action to clean thoroughly. This may, for instance, be the grouting
between tiles that requires the bristles to help clear out dirt or grime. Option (b) would be
the normal use for any stone, tiled or solid floor and normal carpeted areas.
Rubber profile window cleaner(Part 10)
After cleaning tiles or glass with one of the
brushes, use the Rubber Profile Window
Cleaner to remove excess water.
When cleaning exterior glass be careful not
to pick up grit particles on the rubber blade
as this could scratch the glass.
Antique glass and stained glass may be brittle
and can crack under extreme temperatures.
Do not use on glass when the temperature
is below 0oC.
The Window Cleaner can be either used separately or used fitted directly onto one or both
extension tube with the hose handle, whichever is best for the job in hand.
To fit the window cleaner onto the extension tube, first undo the screw in the large brush
connector, fit the connector into the extension tube and insert the window cleaner as shown.

As the attachment is moved down the window (mirror or tiles) and the steamer is unplugged,
the rubber blade will clean away the dirt as it wipes the surface after the steam has been
applied. Excess water from around the window should be removed with a dry cloth.
Note: Steam will completely remove dust, film or greasy marks from windows, mirrors, tiles
and patio doors. It will remove soap and grease residues but cannot remove deposits of
scale. To remove black marks from grouting or difficult corners use the nozzle and small
brushes.
Unit will not operate
• No steam
1. Check that the unit is full of water, if it has boiled dry simply wait for 5 minutes and refill.
Note the internal heating element is fitted with a safety cut-out. This may take a several
minutes to reset.
2. If the unit has been tipped over and the thermal safety cutout has been activated, the
thermal cutout will self reset after approximately 20 minutes.
3. Possible debris in steamplate, unplug allow unit to cool down and check.
4. Hose may be kinked, check and straighten.
5. Check power supply and plug fuse(13amp).
6. If you are using an extension lead make sure it is rated to a minimum of 10amps. The
extension lead should always be fully unwound, an unwound lead may continually ‘trip’.
• Steam leaks from safety valve
This is a pressure release valve. It is there for your safety. If steam leaks from the valve
there may be a blockage in the steam hose. Unplug and check.
NEVER tamper, force or remove this valve.
Descaling
For maximum operating efficiency especially if you live in a hard water area we recommend
you descale the unit periodically using a kettle de-scaling product, follow the manufacture’s
instruction for use.
Attaching the bonnet
Take the bonnet and attach to the large brush with the elasticated traps,(Dia.8) use only
original bonnets.
The bonnets will need to be replaced as they become dirty. Used bonnets can be washed
and re-used. Wash at 90oC for maximum longevity. Do not use bleach or fabric conditioner
and use only one third of normal soap powder to avoid clogging the fibres.
Using the nozzle
Connect the nozzle(Part 7) to the end of the steam hose. (Dia 9)
The nozzle is used to concentrate the steam spray to increase cleaning power. It can be
used in small, awkward, confined or hard to reach spaces or where concentrated steam is
needed.
Using the nozzle with an accessory
Attach one of the small brushes(Part 8 ) to
the nozzle.(Dia.10)
WARNING: THESE SMALL BRUSHES RUN
VERY HOT IN USE. When changing the small
brushes, always use a cloth when holding the
brush to prevent burning your hands. Check
the nozzle and brushes on a regular basis for
any debris/scale build up. The small brushes
can be used to agitate areas that need that little
bit extra abrasion.
The soft small brush is suitable for delicate
cleaning. The hard bristle is ideal for
removing stuborn dirt or stains. The brass
wire brush is suitable for removing dirt from
metallic surfaces, such as ovens, sanitary
fittings, radiators etc.
We recommend that you use the nozzle and
brushes in conjunction with a damp cloth. As
an example if you have baked on material on
a cooker, aim the nozzle at the surface, plug
in the steamer to release the steam and you
should be able to easily wipe the surface clean.
The damp cloth enables you to wipe away the
waste material.
Note: If possible always test any of the brushes on an unseen area or similar material
before use.

PLUG FITTING
Your steam cleaner is supplied with a fitted plug, however if you should need to fit a new
plug follow the instruction below.
IMPORTANT
The wires in the mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code:
Blue - Neutral Brown - Live Green/Yellow - Earth
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this appliance may not correspond with
the coloured markings identifying the terminals
in your plug, proceed as follows:
The wire which is coloured blue must be
connected to the terminal which is marked
with N or coloured black.
The wire which is coloured brown must be
connected to the terminal which is marked
with the letter L or coloured red.
The green/yellow wire to the earth terminal
marked "E" or .If a 13 AMP (BS 1363)
plug is used, a 13 AMP Fuse must be fitted,
or if any other type of plug is used a 13 AMP
fuse must be fitted, either in the plug or
adaptor, or on the Distribution Board.
Note: If a moulded plug is fitted and has to be removed take great care in disposing of the
plug and severed cable, it must be destroyed to prevent engaging into a socket.
