WARNING!
As with all machinery, there are certain hazards involved with their operation
and use. Exercising respect and caution will considerably lessen the risk of
personal injury. However, if normal safety precautions are overlooked or
ignored, personal injury to the operator or damage to machinery may result.
✔ALWAYS read the manual carefully. Know your machine. Learn its applications and
limitations, as well as the specific potential hazards peculiar to it.
✔ALWAYS keep guards in place and in working order.
✔ALWAYS earth your machine. The machine is equipped with three-pin plug, which should
be plugged into a three-pin electrical socket. NEVER remove the earth pin.
✔ALWAYS remove adjusting keys and wrenches. Form the habit of checking to ensure
that keys, wrenches and tools, are removed from the machine.
✔ALWAYS keep work area clean. Cluttered areas and benches invite accidents.
✔ALWAYS check for damage. If any part of the machine, (eg. A cover or guard) is
damaged, it should be carefully inspected to ensure that it can perform its intended
function correctly. If in doubt, the part should be renewed. Damage to moving parts
or major components should be Inspected by a qualified technician before operating.
✔ALWAYS make workshop childproof - with padlocks, master switches or by removing
starter keys.
✔ALWAYS keep children and visitors away. All children and visitors should be kept a safe
distance from work area
✔ALWAYS ensure that adequate lighting is available. A minimum intensity of 300 lux should
be provided. Ensure that lighting is placed so that you will not be working in your own
shadow.
✔ALWAYS use the right tool. Don’t force a tool or attachment to do a job for which it
was not designed.
✔ALWAYS wear proper apparel. Loose clothing, gloves, neckties, rings, bracelets, or
other jewellery may get caught in moving parts. Nonslip footwear is recommended.
Long hair should be contained.
✔ALWAYS use safety glasses. Everyday eyeglasses only have impact resistant lenses,
they are NOT safety glasses.
✔ALWAYS avoid accidental starting. Switch Machine OFF before plugging in.
✔ALWAYS maintain tools in top condition. Keep tools sharp and clean for best and
safest performance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.
✔ALWAYS disconnect the machine before servicing or changing accessories.
✗NEVER overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
✗NEVER use in dangerous environment. Don’t use machinery in damp or wet locations,
or expose them to rain. Keep work area well lit.

✗NEVER stand on the machine. Serious injury could occur if the machine is tipped
over. Do not store materials above or near the machine such that it is necessary to
stand on the machine to get to them.
✗NEVER operate a machine when under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication.
✗NEVER force the machine. It will do the job better and safer, at the rate for which it
was designed.
Additional Safety Rules For Bandsaws
WARNING!
This machine must not be modified or used for any purpose other than that
for which it is designed.
✔ALWAYS wear suitable eye protection, manufactured to the latest European Safety
Standards, when using the bandsaw.
✔ALWAYS Ensure the proper electrical regulations are followed, and that the machine is
properly earthed.
✔ALWAYS ensure all spanners, wrenches etc., are removed from the machine before use.
✔ALWAYS ensure the workpiece is properly secured using the vice...NEVER hold by hand
when cutting, unless using the vertical cutting table.
✔ALWAYS make adjustments with the power OFF.
✔ALWAYS cut at correct speed for the type of material being cut.
✔ALWAYS keep your hands and fingers clear of the blade when sawing.
✔ALWAYS set the blade guide/guard assembly as close as possible to the workpiece.
✔ALWAYS switch off the saw, and make sure the blade has come to a complete stop
before examining or removing the workpiece.
✔ALWAYS keep the saw properly adjusted, paying particular attention to the blade
tension and the blade guides.
✔ALWAYS disconnect the saw from the mains supply before removing the blade cover.
✔ALWAYS check the coolant DAILY. Ensure it is clean and of the correct mix.
✔ALWAYS Wipe the machine surfaces dry at the end of the day.
✔ALWAYS disconnect from the power supply before carrying out any maintenance tasks.
✗NEVER operate this machine unless you are thoroughly familiar with it. If there is any
doubt whatsoever, you should consult a qualified person.
✗NEVER operate the machine until it is completely assembled, and this entire manual,
has been read and understood.
✗NEVER leave the Bandsaw unattended whilst it is running. Turn power OFF and Don’t
leave until it comes to a complete stop.
✗NEVER allow suds to enter the electrical system when using coolant
✗NEVER use soluble oil to cut Magnesium. See your industrial coolant supplier for specific
recommendations.

Electrical Connections
Connect the mains lead to a standard 230V (50Hz) electrical supply through an
approved 13Amp BS1363 plug, or a suitably fused isolator switch.
WARNING! This Appliance must be Earthed!
IMPORTANT: The wires in the mains lead are coloured in accordance with the
following code:
Green & Yellow - Earth
Blue - Neutral
Brown - Live
As the colours of the flexible cord of this appliance may not correspond with the
coloured markings identifying terminals in your plug proceed as follows:
•Connect GREEN & YELLOW coloured cord to plug terminal marked with a letter
E or Earth symbol “ ”or coloured GREEN or GREEN & YELLOW.
•Connect BROWN coloured cord to plug terminal marked with a letter L or
coloured RED
•Connect BLUE coloured cord to plug terminal marked with a letter N or coloured
BLACK
IMPORTANT: If this appliance is fitted with a plug which is moulded on to the
electric cable (i.e. non- re-wireable) please note:
1. The plug must be thrown away if it is cut from the electric cable. There is a
danger of electric shock if it is subsequently inserted into a socket outlet.
2. Never use the plug without the fuse cover fitted.
3. Should you wish to replace a detachable fuse carrier, ensure that the correct
replacement is used (as indicated by marking or colour code).
4. Replacement fuse covers can be obtained from your local dealer or most
electrical stockists.
Fuse Rating
The fuse in the plug must be replaced with one of the same rating (13 amps)
and this replacement must be ASTA approved to BS1362.
IMPORTANT: If in any doubt, do not attempt any electrical repair yourself. Consult
a qualified technician

Overview
Your Metal Cutting Bandsaw is capable of cutting in both the horizontal AND
vertical plane. In order to cut in the vertical plane, a Vertical Cutting Plate is supplied
and is fitted according to the notes on page 13.
The machine comprises a 1/2 HP Motor which drives the blade via a 2-speed
gearbox. High or Low speed may be selected, depending upon the type of
material being cut.
The workpiece is held in a Quick Set Vice which may be swivelled to provide
accurate angle cutting, and a work stop provides for stock pieces of equal length
to be cut without having to measure each piece individually.
Downwards pressure exerted by the blade is adjustable, via an hydraulic ram
acting on the Frame, and a coolant pump delivers coolant to the cutting area to
cool the blade, maximising blade life. The machine will stop automatically once
the cutting operation is complete.
Raising and Lowering the Frame
The hydraulic ram and other fittings, used to control the lowering of the main
Frame are shown in Fig. 2.
To RAISE the Frame,release the Frame Securing Latch if necessary, (shown at 12,
Fig. 1). Grasp the Frame at the Blade Tension Adjuster Knob end and lift so that it
pivots to the vertical position, where it will remain.
Unpacking and Installation
Unpack you bandsaw with assistance, giving due consideration to its weight.
Check to ensure it is undamaged. If damage has occurred during transit, you
should notify your Clarke dealer immediately.
Ensure the machine is located on a firm level surface, with adequate light and
power source. If electrical extensions are necessary, ensure they are routed out of
harms way, so that they cannot be tripped over or damaged by other machinery
or equipment in the vicinity.
To LOWER the Frame,first turn Knob ‘B’ Fig. 2 Fully clockwise,
then turn the lever ‘A’ so that it is at 12 or 6 o’clock, i.e. fully
open.
Grasp the Frame and attempt to lower it, whilst simultaneously
turning the knob ‘B’, anticlockwise. Continue to turn the knob
until the required rate of descent is achieved.
The nut on the stem of Knob ‘B’ may be used to lock the
valve in any particular position, thereby ensuring the rate
of descent, and hence cutting pressure, is constant - for
repetitive work.
WARNING! DO NOT allow the Frame to drop too
quickly, and ensure that nothing can impede its
progress on its downward travel.

Preparation for Use
Warning! Do not attempt to start the machine until ALL the following checks
and adjustments are carried out. Ensure the plug is disconnected from mains.
NOTE: Your Bandsaw is fully assembled at the factory, and except for a few checks and
adjustments, detailed below, is ready for use. The adjustments will need to be checked
each time the bandsaw is set up for a new job, or when the blade is replaced, and after any
maintenance.
To achieve the best performance, and to maintain the maximum level of safety,
the blade must be set up correctly.
a. Blade tension must be correct to ensure the blade circulates correctly and
to prevent the blade from wandering during the cutting operation
b. The blade cutting area is supported by blade guides to support the blade
whilst cutting. It is VITAL that these guides are correctly set.
A. Tensioning the Saw Blade
Turn the Blade Tension Adjusting Knob , arrowed in
Fig. 3, clockwise to increase tension, anticlockwise
to decrease.
The knob is provided with a spring lock to ensure it
does not move during use or whilst the bandsaw is
being moved.
The blade needs to be tight enough to give a straight
cut without allowing it to wander or slip, but must
not be too tight so that it is rigid, there must be a
certain degree of flexibility.
A few minutes using the machine will allow you to get a feel for the correct blade
tension. If the saw is not being used for some time, eg. at the end of a working
day, we recommend that you relieve the tension on the blade.
B. Setting the Blade Guides
The blade guide adjustments are factory set, and
it should not normally be necessary to readjust
unless the blade has been changed or other
maintenance, effecting the guides, has been
carried out.
It is however MOST IMPORTANT that the
Moveable, Blade Guide Carrier is set to ensure
that the blade is supported as close to the
workpiece as possible, and also to ensure that
any area of the blade which is not used for
cutting is covered. ‘A’, Fig. 4 shows the Moveable
Guide Carrier at its maximum extension.

The Moveable Guide Carrier must always be set as close to the work as possible,
without the possibility of it fouling the work during the cutting process, as the Frame
lowers.
The Guide Carrier is secured by the single Hex. socket head screw (‘B’, Fig. 4),
Ensure it is tight before starting the machine.
It follows, that this adjustment is carried out once the workpiece has been secured
in the vice
C. Securing the Work in the Vice
The Vice is provided with a half nut, which may be
flipped up, freeing the screw, so that the vice jaws
may be opened or closed quickly without having
to wind the handle.
The vice may be set at an angle, as described
below. It is factory set to produce a right angle cut,
and should not need adjusting unless an angle cut
is required.
D. Setting the Vice for Angle Cutting
Slacken the nuts shown at A, Fig. 6,
sufficiently for the vice to be pivoted
to the desired angle as determined by
the angle gauge ‘C’, using the face of
the large jaw as a datum face. Ensure
the two nuts at ‘A’ are then fully
tightened.
It may be necessary to slacken the nut
at ‘B’ also, so that the small jaw may
pivot to accommodate the workpiece.
If absolute accuracy is required, use a
small engineers square, or a suitable
template, checking the angle
between the blade and the workpiece,
or a suitable bar/rod, held in the vice
jaws.
Fig. 7 shows the vice set for 45 degree
cutting, using the work stop.
To reset the vice to cut at right angles,
simply slacken the two nuts at ‘A’, and
line the face of the large vice jaw so that
it is in line with the zero degree mark. If
absolute accuracy is desired, place a
straight bar in the vice jaws, and check
the angle made with the saw blade with
a small engineers square.

E. Fitting and Setting the Work Stop
The Work Stop may be used so that pieces of
equal length may be cut, without having to
measure each individual piece.
To fit the work stop, insert the Work Stop Support
Rod (‘A’, Fig.8) into the mounting, as shown.
With the workpiece set in the vice at the desired
position, and firmly held in place, bring the work
stop up to the work and lock in place using the
lock knob (‘B’), It is now a simple matter, once
the first cut has been made, to open the vice
jaws, slide the workpiece out until it touches the

DO NOT attempt to change speed whilst the machine is running. Ensure the
blade has come to a complete stop, and the plug is disconnected from the
mains supply
work stop - near to the bottom of the cut is preferred, and retightening the vice
jaws, ready for the next cut.

G. Setting the Cutting Speed
A two speed gearbox provides for different types of material to be cut. Use the
chart below to determine the speed setting, depending upon the material being
cut.
F. The Coolant Tank
Fill the coolant tank with Clarke Cutting Oil, (see
page 23), or Coolant (soluble oil), mixed according
to the manufacturers recommendations, or Do not
allow to run dry. Ensure the coolant is clean and
always of the correct consistency.
The coolant pump is switched ON by pushing the
GREEN knob (I), shown in Fig 9, and switched OFF
by pushing the RED knob (O)

To change speed, pull out the locating pin
handle, shown arrowed in Fig. 10, and move
the lever so that it locks into place in either the
‘A’ or ‘B’ position.
NOTE: If the gears do not mesh immediately, it may
be necessary to move the saw blade slightly whilst
applying pressure to the gear change lever.
Ensure your hands are well protected during this
operation.
Using the Bandsaw Ref: Fig.11
With the blade correctly tensioned, the workpiece firmly
secured, and the Frame in the raised position, select
the cutting speed depending upon the type of material
being cut.
Lower the Frame as described on page 8, gently, and
when the blade approaches the workpiece, shut OFF
the oil flow to the Ram by turning the lever ‘A’, to the 9
or 3 o’clock position, (This will stop the Frame from
descending further), then turn the knob ‘B’ fully
clockwise.
Taking all necessary precautions, plug the machine into
the mains supply and switch ON by pressing the GREEN
button marked ‘I’ (shown in Fig. 12). To switch OFF press
the RED button marked ‘O’,
At this point...turn ON the coolant, (the coolant tap is shown in Fig. 1), and switch
ON the coolant pump.
The rate of descent of the Frame determines the cutting rate and is therefore
controlled by the knob ‘B’.
The cutting rate is dependant upon two main factors.......the type of material and
the thickness of cut, (which may not be constant). It therefore becomes a matter of
‘feel’. Ideally, blade pressure should be not so light so that it simply ‘rubs’ the work,
and not so heavy as to cause the blade to wander off line or ‘grab’ the work.

NOTE: If this is the first time you have operated
your machine, or if a new blade has been
installed, allow the blade to run completely off
load for a few minutes to allow the blade to settle.
With the blade running at full speed, turn the
Lever ‘A’, to the 12 or 6 o’clock position
again, then gently turn knob ‘B’
anticlockwise so that the blade slowly lowers
until it contacts the workpiece and cutting
begins.

When the Frame reaches
the bottom of its travel, a
bracket, attached to the
Frame, (‘A’ Fig.13), presses
down on the OFF switch,
(‘B’ Fig.13), switching Off the
machine. ALWAYS ensure
the bracket is positioned so
that this will operate
correctly.
Adjust the bracket in conjunction with the Frame Stop, shown in Fig. 13A. Adjust
the Stop so that the OFF switch is activated, without the full weight of the Frame
being supported by the switch.
A. ‘Running In’ the Blade
To gain the maximum working life from your blade it is also essential for a new
blade to be ‘RUN IN’ for a short period of time. This is done by applying a lighter
cutting pressure on the first few cuts made by the blade. As a guide the ‘Running
In’ cutting pressure should be half the normal cutting pressure. The cut will therefore
take longer to complete.
B. Converting for Vertical Cutting
With the head in the vertical position, the bandsaw may be used for notching,
slitting and cutting curves, by hand as shown in Fig. 14. This is achieved by
attaching a work table to the Fixed Blade Guide Block, shown in Fig. 14A, using

A. Changing the Blade
When the blade becomes worn or defective in
any way it should be replaced immediately. The
following process details how to change the
blade. Once the blade has been replaced it is
recommended that the blade is Run In for a short
period . (see ‘Running In’ the Blade on p.13)
1. Ensure the machine is disconnected from the
mains supply then raise the Frame to its
vertical position.
2. Remove the four screws, arrowed in Fig. 16,
to allow the removal of the Blade Cover.
3. Turn the Blade Adjuster Knob fully
anticlockwise in order to lower the idler
pulley. This will remove all tension from the
blade, allowing it to be pulled from the
pulleys and from between the guide
bearings, paying due care to the sharpness
of the teeth,
4. Carefully feed the new blade between the
blade guide bearings, as shown in Fig. 17 and
then over the bottom pulley. Hold in position
with one hand whilst stretching the blade
upwards, around the five rollers shown in Fig.
17, and over the top pulley.
Hold in place whilst applying tension by
screwing the blade tension adjuster knob
clockwise.
5. Turn the blade by hand to ensure it runs truly,
and centrally about the pulleys.
When satisfied, squirt a few drops of light oil
on the flat of the blade, then replace the
blade cover.
MAINTENANCE
WARNING!
This machine MUST be disconnected from the mains supply whenever
carrying out adjustments or maintenance of any kind.

B. Adjusting the Blade Guides
Blade Guide adjustment is critical in ensuring the blade runs true. This adjustment
is carried out at the factory, and the need for readjustment should rarely occur. If
results are unsatisfactory, it is strongly recommended that you try a new blade
before readjusting the guide bearings. If a blade becomes dull on one side for
example, it will cause the blade to run off line. A new blade will correct this.
If it does become necessary to adjust the guide bearings, it is best carried out with
a new blade installed and correctly tensioned.

NOTE: Guide Bearings support the blade to
prevent it from twisting, and a roller is located
at the back edge of the blade to prevent
lateral movement, i.e. from being forced
backwards, away from the workpiece.
The inner guide bearings are on a fixed axis,
whereas the outer bearings are mounted on
an eccentric shaft, thereby enabling them to
move laterally when the shaft is turned, i.e.
towards or away from the blade.
Clearance between the guide bearing and
blade must be from 0.000in. (just touching) to
0.001in. MAXIMUM.
To adjust bearing clearance, slacken the
Hex socket head screw ‘A’ and turn the
bearing shaft, using the nut on the end of the shaft, so that the bearings just touch
the blade. When satisfied, retighten screw ‘A’
Repeat this process with the guide bearings mounted on the Moveable Guide
Carrier (see Fig. 1, p7).
C. Blade Tracking Adjustment
This adjustment is carried out at the factory
and it should not normally require
readjustment. If the blade is thrown, first try a
new blade as this should normally cure the
problem. If the new blade is thrown however,
adjust the tracking as follows:
Ensure the plug is disconnected, then, with
the Frame in the vertical position and the
blade cover removed, adjust the blade so
that only moderate tension is applied.
Slacken the two Hex socket head screws,
shown at ‘A’ fig.19, using a 6mm hex wrench,
by one turn.

If the blade tends to run off the rim of the pulley wheel, turn the Hex. socket head
screw, shown at ‘B’ fig.19, using a 4.5mm wrench, CLOCKWISE, by one quarter
turn only, then retighten the two screws shown at ‘A’.
Turn the blade by hand, ensuring you are wearing a suitable pair of industrial
gloves, checking to ensure the blade runs neatly, just off the lip on the back edge
of the pulley wheel. If necessary, slacken off the two screws ‘A’ and repeat the
process.
If the blade tends to climb the lip on the back edge of the pulley wheel, the screw
at ‘B’ should be turned ANTICLOCKWISE, following the same procedure.
As a final check, ensure the blade tension is correctly set, replace the blade guard,
then plug in to the mains supply and switch ON. If run-off is noted, repeat the
process until completely satisfied.
D. Cleaning
It is recommended that the Bandsaw is kept clean and free of filings, swarf etc.,
by cleaning with a brush , paying particular attention to the Blade Guides. Keeping
the vice free from residue will ensure that the work sits square to the blade, giving
a more accurate cut.
Always clean and dry the machine at the end of a days work, particularly when
coolant has been used.
E. Lubrication
To ensure proper running of your machine, the following Lubrication Schedule
should be followed, using SAE30 oil.
1. Weekly, 6-8 drops on the Driven Pulley Bearing (Lower Pulley). The Pulley Cover
must be removed to accomplish this task.
2. As required - Vice Screw ....ensure it is clean and free from foreign material.
3. Annually - The oil requires changing in the Gearbox Annually, or more often if
the oil becomes contaminated, or an oil leak occurs.
To change the oil, remove the Hex. socket head screw plug, located on the
right hand side of the gearbox, and allow the oil to drain into a container.
Replace the plug and fill to the bottom of the oil filler hole with gear oil.

4. Adjust wheel alignment
5. Check Machinist Handbook for
recommended blade type
6. Place blade in contact with work
after motor is started
7. Adjust guides
1. Use finer tooth blade
2. Try lower speed
3. Increase feed pressure
4. Reduce speed increase feed
pressure
5. Increase feed pressure
6. Remove blade, twist inside out and
reinstall blade.
7. Increase tension to proper level
1. Adjust vice to be square with blade
2. Reduce feed pressure
3. Adjust guide bearings.
4. Increase blade tension
5. Adjust moveable guide
6. Replace blade
7. Select correct speed
8. Tighten guide assy.
9. Tighten guide assy.
10. Re-track blade according to
operating instructions
1. Reduce speed and feed
2. Replace with finer blade
1. Replace
2. Adjust Guide Bearings
3. Tighten

speed
