Introduction
Thank you for purchasing a Codan 3031 Crosspatch. With this
great product and Codan’s supreme after-sales service, you
can look forward to many years of clear and reliable HF to
VHF/UHF communication. Please read this guide thoroughly
and retain it for future reference. There is an index at the end
of this guide to assist you in finding information.
Overview of this guide
This guide provides instructions on how to install and test
your 3031 Crosspatch with a Codan NGT or 2110 Manpack
Transceiver, and a third-party VHF/UHF transceiver. It also
describes how to set up your Codan HF transceiver for
seamless operation with the crosspatch, and how to make calls
from HF to VHF/UHF and VHF/UHF to HF. This guide
assumes that you are familiar with the content of the
documentation provided with your Codan HF transceiver.
This guide contains the following sections:
Section 1 Overview—provides an overview of the 3031
Crosspatch, and describes typical crosspatch
communication systems
Section 2 Installation—explains how to connect the
components of the communication system, and
describes specific requirements for third-party
equipment
Section 3 Setting up the Codan HF transceiver—provides
specific details for setting up your Codan HF
transceiver to operate with a 3031 Crosspatch
Section 4 Operating the crosspatch—describes LED
indications, tone sequences, operating modes,
and how to make calls

The 3031 Crosspatch
Introduction
The 3031 Crosspatch provides a method of connecting an HF
communication system with a VHF or UHF communication
system. The crosspatch may be used in a mobile or fixed base
station.
Figure 1: Front panel of the 3031 Crosspatch
Power supply
The 3031 Crosspatch is powered via its connection to the
Codan HF Transceiver. When the HF transceiver is switched
on, the connected crosspatch will also have power.
NOTE
Two variants of the 3031 Crosspatch are
available:
• 15-way D-type connector on flying lead for
use with a 2010 RF Unit/2030 Junction Box, a
2012 RF Unit, or a 2110 Interface Adaptor.
• 19-way MS connector on flying lead for use
with a 2110 Manpack Transceiver.

Overview
Crosspatch 3031 User Guide 5
Compatibility
The 3031 Crosspatch is designed to be compatible with a wide
range of VHF and UHF transceivers. The VHF or UHF
transceiver must have:
• a Tx audio input
• an Rx audio output with constant volume (that is, its
level is not dependent on the volume setting)
• an active low PTT input control signal
• a squelch (or carrier detect) output control signal
DTMF-capable VHF/UHF transceivers
The method of entering a DTMF command varies across the
range of DTMF-capable VHF/UHF transceivers. When you
enter a DTMF command, you should follow the process
required for your VHF/UHF transceiver. In the instructions
provided in this guide, only the DTMF command to be entered
is provided, not the method of entering the command.
NOTE
See the documentation provided with your
VHF/UHF transceiver to check that these
capabilities are available, or consult with your
VHF/UHF dealer. Some transceivers require
software configuration to enable these signals.
NOTE
See the documentation provided with your
VHF/UHF transceiver to determine how it
transmits DTMF signals.

Overview
6 Crosspatch 3031 User Guide
Operating modes
The operating status of the crosspatch may be controlled:
• directly by the Codan HF transceiver connected to the
crosspatch
• by using DTMF commands on a DTMF-capable
VHF/UHF transceiver
The crosspatch may be switched off to prevent patching
between an HF communication network and a VHF/UHF
communication network.
NOTE For information on each operating mode see
page 50, Operating modes.

Overview
Crosspatch 3031 User Guide 7
Typical configurations
The 3031 Crosspatch may be used in a number of
configurations with any compatible third-party VHF/UHF
transceiver. For information on compatibility requirements see
page 5, Compatibility.
Basic configuration
In the basic configuration, the 3031 Crosspatch provides a
physical connection between a Codan HF transceiver and a
third-party VHF/UHF transceiver, enabling remote HF and
VHF/UHF transceivers to communicate with each other.

Trunked configuration
In the trunked configuration, two or more basic configurations
are connected via an HF link. This enables two or more
VHF/UHF networks, separated by a distance beyond the
capabilities of the VHF/UHF medium but within the
capabilities of the HF medium, to communicate with each
other using standard VHF/UHF transceivers.

Extended communication configuration
In the extended communication configuration, a basic
configuration is connected via an HF link to a Codan HF
telephone station. This enables a remote VHF/UHF operator
to make a call via an HF radio/telephone interconnect to a
PSTN.
