Safe System of Work
What are the hazards and how might they harm?
1. Check the equipment is placed on a level, stable surface which is at a suitable height to allow safe
operation of the equipment and is large enough to allow you to work safety.
2. Ensure plug sockets are close to the equipment and do not risk cables being over stretched and
potentially damaged.
3. Keep hands, fingers, clothing and any other materials away from the hot elements of the equipment.
4. Do not place hands or fingers where they can become trapped in the equipment.
5. Switch off equipment as soon as you have finished using it.
6. Isolate the sealer and allow it to cool before carrying out any cleaning and before changing the
hot wire.
7. Only change the hot wire if you have been trained to do so.
Use of bag and sandwich sealers
If you have any concerns, stop and speak with your line manager before proceeding.
What other precautions should be taken?
Crush injuries from placing
hands near moving parts
of equipment
Trip injuries from
tripping over trailing
electrical cables
Burns/scalds from contact
with hot surfaces,
equipment and utensils
Electric shock or burns
from incorrect use or
damaged/faulty equipment
Visually inspect equipment and cable for any damage or
defects, such as burn marks or frayed cables before use.
