1 Introduction
1.1 Firstthingsrst!
Thank you for choosing the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system which is supplied in a bundle
consisting of the Condair DS steam distribution unit and the CondairRHsteamhumidier.
Condair RH-DS steam humidication system incorporates the latest technical ad van ces and meets all
recognized safety standards. However, improper use of the steam humidication system may result in
danger to the user or third parties and/or damage to property.
To ensure a safe, proper, and economical operation, please observe and comply with all of the infor-
mation and safety instructions contained in this document and in the separate documentations of the
components installed in the used together with the steam humidication system.
If you have questions after reading this documentation, please contact your Condair representative.
They will be glad to assist you.
1.2 Notes on the installation and operation manual
Scope
The subject of this installation and operation manual is the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system.
Options and accessories for the steam humidication system are described only to the extent necessary
for proper operation. Further information on options and accessories can be obtained in the respective
instructions.
The information in this installation and operation manual is limited to the installation, operation, main-
tenance and troubleshooting of the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system and is meant for ap-
propriately trained groups of people who are adequately qualied for the respective work.
This installation and operation manual is accompanied by various separate documents that are included
in the delivery or enclosed with the options and accessories. Where necessary, appropriate cross-
references are made to these publications in the installation and operation manual.

General
Any person assigned to work on the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system must have read and
understood this installation and operation manual before starting work.
Knowing and understanding the contents of this installation and operation manual is a basic require-
ment for protecting personnel against any kind of danger, to prevent faulty operation, and to operate
the system safely and correctly.
All pictograms, signs and markings afxed to the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system must be
observed and kept in a clearly legible condition.
Qualicationofpersonnel
All actions described in this installation and operation manual may only be carried out by trained and
adequatelyqualiedpersonnelauthorizedbytheoperator.
Furthermore, for safety and warranty reasons, interventions may only be undertaken by specialist per-
sonnel authorised by Condair.
It is assumed that all persons entrusted with work on the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system
know and adhere to the regulations on work safety and accident prevention.
Intended use
TheCondairRH-DSsteamhumidicationsystemisintendedexclusivelyforductairhumidica-
tionacontrolledresidentialheatrecoveryventilationsystem(HRV)withinthespeciedoperating
conditions. Any other use without the written consent of Condair, is considered as not conforming with
the intended purpose and may lead to the steam humidication system becoming dangerous.
Operation of the equipment in the intended manner requires that all the information contained in this
installation and operation manual are observed (in particular the safety instructions).

DANGER!
Dangerofelectrichazard!
TheCondairRHsteamhumidierismainspowered.Livepartsmaybeexposedwhentheunit
is open. Touching live parts may cause severe injury or danger to life.
Forthisreason:The steam humidier must be connected to the mains only after all mounting and
installation work has been completed, all installations have been checked for correct workmanship
and the unit is closed and properly locked.
DANGER!
Dangerofelectrichazard!
If the main cable of the Condair RH is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, his
customermaintenanceorasimilarlyqualiedpersoninordertoavoidhazards.

WARNING!
Hotsteam-Scaldinghazard!
TheCondairRH-DSsteamhumidicationsystemworkswithhotsteam.Contactwithhotsteam
may cause scalding.
Forthisreason: Do not carry out any tasks on the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system
(steam piping, steam distribution unit, etc.) when the system is in operation. If the Condair RH-DS
steam humidication system is not tight, immediately take the Condair RH steam humidier feeding
the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system (see installation and operation manual of the Condair
RH steam humidier) out of service and properly seal the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system
before recommissioning.
WARNING!
Burnhazard!
Duringoperation,thecomponentsoftheCondairRH-DSsteamhumidicationsystem(steam
hose, steam distributor, etc.) heat up to 100°C. Contact with the hot components may cause
burns.
For this reason: Before commencing work on the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system,
take the Condair RH steam humidier feeding the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system out
of service (see installation and operation manual of the Condair RH steam humidier) and then wait
until the components have cooled down sufciently to avoid the risk of burns.
Forthisreason: Where there is a risk that people can touch the steam and condensate hose, insulate
them.
WARNING!
High humidity can promote the growth of biological organisms and thereby endanger the
health of people.
Forthisreason: To prevent this, the duct or steam distribution unit into which the steam is blown must
be cleaned regularly in accordance with the applicable hygiene guidelines.
Preventing unsafe operation
All persons assigned to work on the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system are obliged to im-
mediately report to the operator's responsible parties any alterations to the unit that affect safety. The
Condair RH steam humidier feeding the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system should be taken
out of service immediately and secured in such a way that it cannot be unintentionally switched on.
Unauthorizedmodicationstothedevice
Noadditionsormodications may be made to the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system without
the written permission of Condair.
When replacing any defective components on the unit, use only genuine accessories and spare parts
from your Condair representative.

3.2 Checking the delivery
After receiving:
– Inspect shipping boxes for damage.
Any damages of the shipping boxes must be reported to the shipping company without delay.
– Check packing slip to ensure all parts has been delivered.
All material shortages are to be reported to your Condair supplier within 48 hours after receipt of the
goods. Condair Group AG assumes no responsibility for any material shortages beyond this period.
– Unpack the parts/components and check for any damage.
If parts/components are damaged, notify the shipping company immediately.
– Check whether the components are suitable for installation on your site according to the unit data
stated on the specication label.
3.3 Storage and Transportation
Storing
Until installation store the components of the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system in its original
packaging in a protected area meeting the following requirements:
– Room temperature: 5 ... 40 °C
– Room humidity: 10 ... 75 %rh (non condensing)
Transportation
For optimum protection always transport the components of the Condair RH-DS steam humidication
system in their original packaging and use appropriate lifting/transporting devices.
Packaging
If the packaging is to be disposed of, observe the local regulations on waste disposal. Please recycle
packaging where possible.

4.2 Functional description
The Condair RH-DS steam humidication system consists of the Condair RH steam humidier and the
Condair DS steam distribution unit and has a maximum steam output of 1.8 kg/h.
The steam humidier can either be mounted on a wall or suspended from a ceiling (e.g. between the
pipes of the ventilation unit) using the ceiling bracket available as an accessory.
The ready-to-install steam distribution unit from the factory can be easily installed in the supply air duct
of the residential heat recovery ventilation system (HRV) through the reductions which are available in
various sizes.
The Condair DS steam distribution unit can be integrated into both horizontal or vertical supply air ducts
of a HRV and also allows for the comparatively simple placement of the sensors, even in conned spaces
within the HRV's piping.
The steam distribution pipe inside the steam distribution unit allows for condensate and aerosol-free
steam distribution under strongly varying supply air conditions (temperature and air volume ow) in a
residential heat recovery ventilation system (HRV). Due to the special design of the steam distribution
pipe, the humidication distance is very short and takes the often very limited space for residential heat
recovery ventilation system into account.
The condensate that forms in the steam distribution pipe of the steam distribution is discharged through
the condensate drain line or ows through the steam hose back into the steam cylinder of the Condair
RH steam humidier.
4.3 Accessories
The following accessories are available for the Condair RH-DS steam humidication system:

4.4 Humidity control variants
The Condair RH-DS steam humidication system is intended for use in a residential heat recovery ven-
tilation system (HRV) with a central ventilation unit in conjunction with the Condair RH steam humidier
(maximum steam output: 2 kg/h).
The following conditions are generally present in a conventional HRV:
– High proportion of outside air, usually 100%
– Occasional low supply air temperatures <20°C
– Variable air volume ow
Various control systems can be used for controlling humidity. Two possible humidity control systems (see
Section 4.4.1 and Section 4.4.2) that can be implemented with the Condair RH steam humidiers are
considered below. Detailed information on humidity control can be found in the installation and operation
manual of the Condair RH steam humidier.

For room humidity control based on extract air humidity (System 1), the sensors should be placed as
follows (see Fig. 3):
• The airowmonitor"B2" (optional accessory) must be installed in front of the Condair DS steam
distribution unit with a minimum distance of 200 mm to the reduction on the inlet side in the
supply air duct.
• The maximumhumidistat"B1" must be installed behind the Condair DS steam distribution unit with
a minimum distance of 250 mm to the reduction on the outlet side and a maximumdistance
of 1000 mm into the supply air duct.
• The humiditysensor"A1" must be installed in the extract air duct.
For this humidity control system, the PI continuous controller integrated in the Condair RH steam humi-
dier or an external PI continuous controller is required.
Recommendedsettingsforthemaximumhumidistatandthehumiditysensor:
– Maximum humidistat "B1": 80 %rh
– Humidity sensor "A1": recommended 45 %rh (min. 40 %rF to max. 50 %rF)
Important: The humidity control system 1 may be used only if a pre-heater is installed in the outside
air line as anti-icing protection for the heat exchanger. If the HRV has another anti-icing system, only
the humidity control system 2 (see Section 4.4.2) may be used to control the Condair RH-DS steam
humidication system.

For room humidity control with continuous limitation of the supply air humidity (System 2), the sensors
should be placed as follows (see Fig. 4):
• The airowmonitor"B2" (optional accessory) must be installed in front of the Condair DS steam
distribution unit with a minimum distance of 200 mm to the reduction on the inlet side in the
supply air duct.
• The maximumhumidistat"B1" must be installed behind the Condair DS steam distribution unit with
a minimum distance of 250 mm to the reduction on the outlet side and a maximumdistance
of 1000 mm into the supply air duct.
• The humiditysensorforsupplyairlimitation"A2" (Signal Y2) must be installed in the supply air
duct with a minimum distance of 100 mm from the maximum humidistat "B2".
• The humiditysensorforhumidityregulator"A1" (Signal Y1) must be installed in the extract air
duct of the room to be humidied.
This humidity control system requires either the PI continuous controller integrated in the Condair RH
or an external PI continuous controller with two signal inputs.
Recommendedsettingsforthemaximumhumidistatandthehumiditysensors:
– Maximum humidistat "B1": 80 %rh
– Humidity sensor "A1": recommended 45 %rh (min. 40 %rF to max. 50 %rF)
– Humidity sensor "A2": Lower limit: 60%, Upper limit: 80%

5.1 Safety instructions for mounting and installation work
Personnelqualications
All assembly and installation work may be performed only by suitablytrained,adequatelyqualied
personnel who are authorised by the operator. It is the responsibility of the operator to check the
qualication.
General notes
All information in this installation and operation manual for the placement and installation of the Condair
RH-DS steam humidication system must be observed and adhered to.
All information in the Condair RH installation and operation manual for the placement and installation of
the steam humidier must be observed and adhered to.
All local regulations for the installation of the water, steam and electrical systems must be observed and
adhered to.
Safety
To connect the sensors in the Condair RH steam humidier, observe and follow the instructions and
safety notes in the Condair RH installation and operation manual.

5.2 Requirements for the installation room
The Condair RH-DS steam humidication system is designed for installation in sheltered indoor environ-
ments. Please observe the following notes regarding the requirements for the installation site:
– Where possible, the steam humidication system should be installed in a separate and lockable
technical room with limited access for people.
– The installation room should have a oordrainor a lifting system (sewage pump) connected to
the wastewater line of the building.
– The installation room should be ventilated (if possible) and have the following temperature and
humidity values throughout the year:
Room temperature: +15°C to +30°C
Room humidity: 15 %rh to 75 %rh (non-condensing)
– Depending on the location of the steam humidier and the steam distribution unit, one or two open
drain funnels with trap must be available in the installation room, which is/are connected to the build-
ing's wastewater line.
– The steam humidier must be installed in the room in such a way that the maximum permissible
length of the steam hose of 4 m between the steam distribution unit and the steam humidier is not
exceeded, that the minimum hose bending radius of 250 mm is observed and that the steam line has
a constant up- or downslope between the connection on the steam humidier and the connection
on the steam distribution unit (see information on steam hose routing in Section 5.6).
Note: In order that the steam humidier can be mounted to the ceiling between the pipes of the ven-
tilation unit with the ceiling bracket (available as an accessory), there must be a minimum distance
of 300 mm between the ventilation pipes.
– Make sure that the construction (wall, ceiling, etc.) to which the steam humidier is to be mounted,
offers a sufcientload-bearingcapacity, and is suitable for the installation
– The steam distribution unit and the steam humidier should be installed in the room in such a way
that they are easily accessible and there is enough space for maintenance.

5.3 Requirements for the ventilation system
The ventilation system must meet the following requirements:
– The Condair DS steam distribution unit is designed to be installed in an existing or newly designed
residential heat recovery ventilation system (HRV). The Condair DS steam distribution unit cannot
be operated without a HRV. The steam distribution unit is installed in the central supply air duct in
front of the distributor, behind any existing silencer.
– Ensure that the temperature of the supply air to the steam distribution unit is always >15°C. If too
much cold air ows through the steam distribution unit, short-term condensation in the humidica-
tion tube of the steam distribution unit or in downstream piping or ventilation elements may occur.
If the HRV is equipped with automatic, temperature-controlled anti-icing protection for a dry heat
exchanger with a preheating register in the outside air line and this is activated, there is no risk of
condensation.
– The Condair DS steam distribution unit is designed for operation with an air ow of 80 m3/h to 350
m3/h. These values must not be undershot or exceeded by the ventilation system.
– In order to ensure hygienic operation of the Condair DS steam distribution unit, the supply air lter
(and, if a bypass is present, the extract air lter) of the HRV must be at least lter class ISO Coarse
65% (G4) (recommended ISO ePM1 60% (F7)). It is the customer's responsibility to guarantee the
lter quality.
5.4 Placementandinstallationofthesteamhumidier
The mounting of the steam humidier is not part of these installation and operating manual. For details,
please refer to the installation and operating manual of the Condair RH steam humidier.
