GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The GS40 is a completely self contained combustible gas leak
detector designed to pinpoint gas leaks in the most demanding
applications. An efficient and sensitive gas sensor is combined
with solid state circuitry which provides an audible alarm that
increases in pitch as the concentration of the gas increases. A
visual indication is also provided as well as provisions for an
earphone for use in noisy environments.
The sensor has been extensively tested and averages a useful
life of five years in normal operation. The sensor is capable of
responding to a wide range of combustible gases and other
toxic contaminants. Response levels as low as 25 ppm are
possible.
A modern design, combined with an efficient heated Tin Oxide
sensor, allows long operating life from a battery pack of only 4
AA cells. This allows for a very portable, lightweight instrument
featuring an 18 inch—46 cm—flexible metal probe capable of
reaching the most difficult locations.
The operation of the GS40 is fully automatic; no manual
adjustment is needed to obtain the full benefits of its unique
sensitivity and stability. Simply turn the ON-OFF switch to either
its HI or LO sensitivity positions, wait a short period of time
while the instrument automatically warms up the sensor, and
balances itself to the surrounding atmosphere, and the GS40
will start its audible alarm at a slow ticking rate to signal that it is
ready to search for leaks. During the warm up time, a bright red
LED signals the state of the battery pack: fully illuminated if the
batteries are OK or dimly lit if the batteries need changing.
The sensor in the GS40 has a normal life of over 5 years. However,
if accidental damage to the sensor occurs by getting wet or
clogged, it can be easily replaced as indicated in the maintenance
section.
The GS40 is not intrinsically safe in Class 1, Division 1
atmospheres and should be turned on and off in areas where
no combustible gases are present.

1. Install 4 alkaline AA batteries in the
battery compartment as shown in-
side battery compartment.
2. Turn the instrument ON by sliding the
front panel switch to either the LO
position as shown in Fig 2. This sets
the instrument to its low sensitivity
setting.
CAUTION: perform this step and the
previous one in an atmosphere free
of contaminants.
3. Wait approximately 30 seconds un-
til the audible alarm starts to tick at
a slow rate.
4. Start searching for leaks.
5. If no leaks are found, exit to an area free from contami-
nants, switch the instrument to the HI sensitivity setting
and repeat from step 3.
OPERATION
The GS40 is a fully automatic instrument and it will adjust itself
to any background contamination. This means that if the user
walks into an area where there is a background concentration of
contaminants, there will be an alarm, but the unit will quickly ad-
just itself to the background and will resume its slow ticking rate.
CAUTION: If a background indication is detected, it is best to
return to an area free of contamination, turn off the instrument,
ventilate the area and repeat the operation from Step 2.
If large leaks are present, the high sensitivity of the GS40 will
make it difficult to pinpoint the source of the leak. In those cases,
exit to an area free from contaminants, set the sensitivity switch
to LO and repeat the search procedure from Step 3. Large leaks
should be repaired first.
The best procedure to find a leak with the GS40 is to sweep the
sensor back and forth over suspected areas such as joints,
fittings and valves. Repeated alarms over the same spot are a
sure indication of a leak.

MAINTENANCE
The GS40 is a rugged instrument designed with the durability
and reliability demands of the service industry in mind. Al-
though no regular maintenance is required other than replac-
ing the batteries, some care should be observed to ensure the
maximum life and performance.
1. SENSOR CARE:
The gas sensor used in the GS40 is the product of years
of research and development. It’s miniature size and low
power consumption allows extended operation in portable
equipment.
The sensor has a metal grill at the
front. This grill allows the contami-
nants to come in contact with the
sensing element inside and should
never be allowed to become clogged
with dirt or grease. If this should
happen, the sensor becomes use-
less and needs to be replaced. No
water should be allowed to penetrate
the sensor. If this happens, the sen-
sor must be replaced.
2. SENSOR REPLACEMENT:
To replace the sensor, simply unscrew the front of the sen-
sor housing, pull the sensor out, plug the replacement sen-
sor into its socket, first aligning the metal tab on the sensor
shell with the notch in the sensor housing, and screw the
front of the sensor housing back in place.

3. BATTERY REPLACEMENT:
When the red LED on the front panel lights dimly, it is time
to replace the batteries. Even though the GS40 will still op-
erate for some time when the LED is dimly lit, it is recom-
mended never to let the LED be completely extinguished.
Replace the batteries with a fresh set of 4 alkaline AA
cells as indicated in Fig 1. A set of 4 rechargeable Nickel
Metal Hydride cells can also be used but they cannot be re-
charged in the instrument; use the charger recommended
by the manufacturer of the batteries.

WARRANTY
CPS® guarantees that all products are free of manufac-
turing and material defects for one year from the date of
purchase. If a product should fail during the guarantee
period due to defective material or workmanship, it will
be repaired or replaced (at our option) at no charge.
This guarantee does not apply to products that have
been altered, misused or are in need of field service
maintenance. All repaired products will carry an inde-
pendent 90 day warranty. LS3000B and LS790B carry
a 2 year warranty.

DESCRIPCIÓN
El modelo GS40 es un detector de fugas portátil de avanzado
diseño de estado sólido que permite encontrar las fugas más
pequeñas de gases y vapores combustibles con eficiencia y
rapidez. Indicación audible y visible permite al usuario locali-
zar las fugas con precisión, ahorrando tiempo y recursos. Un
dispositivo de audífono puede ser usado en ambientes ru-
idosos.
El sensor de estado sólido usado en el modelo GS40 tiene
una vida útil de 5 años. Este sensor responde a una variada
gama de gases y vapores combustibles en concentraciones
tan bajas como 25 partes por millón.
Gracias al avanzado diseño del sensor y de la placa electróni-
ca, se pueden obtener 20 horas de operación usando apenas
4 baterías de tipo AA alcalinas. Debido a este alto rendimien-
to, el GS40 es un instrumento de poco peso y muy manejable;
una sonda flexible de 46 cm (18”) de largo permite la local-
ización de fugas en logares de difícil acceso.
El funcionamiento del GS40 es completamente automático
y no requiere ajustes manuales para obtener la sensibilidad
y estabilidad requerida para un trabajo eficiente. Cuando el
interruptor de potencia se coloca en la posición HI o LO, el in-
strumento comienza un período de calentamiento del sensor
y de actualización de los parámetros de operación. Al cabo
de un corto tiempo, las alarmas audibles y visuales se acti-
van y el instrumento está listo para buscar fugas. Durante el
período de calentamiento y actualización, una bombilla LED
muestra, por su brillantez, el estado de carga de las baterías.
El sensor del modelo GS40 tiene una vida útil de 5 años. Sin
embargo, si penetra agua dentro del sensor o su rejilla de ac-
ceso se tupe con grasa y polvo, es posible cambiar el sensor
fácilmente como se muestra en la
sección de mantenimiento.
El modelo GS40 no es intrínsicamente seguro para uso en
atmósferas combustibles. Favor de consultar las disposi-
ciones locales para el uso de instrumentos electrónicos en
atmósferas combustibles.

OPERACION
1. Instalar 4 baterías en su compar-
timiento como se muestra en el in-
terior.
2. Encender el instrumento deslizando
el interruptor OFF-LO-HI a la posición
LO como lo muestra la Fig 2. Esta
operación selecciona la sensibilidad
baja del GS40 e inicia el proceso de
calentamiento y actualización.
AVISO: Esta operación debe reali-
zarse en un lugar ventilado y libre
de gases combustibles.
3. Esperar aproximadamente 30 se-
gundos hasta que la alarma audible
comience a sonar con pulsaciones
lentas.
4. Comenzar la búsqueda de fugas.
5. Si no se encuentran fugas, se regresa a un área libre de
gases combustibles, se selecciona la posición HI y se re-
pite el procedimiento desde el paso 3.
El modelo GS40 se ajusta automáticamente a los niveles de
contaminación en el trasfondo ambiental. Si el usuario entra
en un área contaminada con gases combustibles, la alarma
del GS40 sonará momentáneamente para luego regresar al
nivel normal de la alarma.
AVISO: Si se observa una contaminación de fondo, lo in-
dicado es regresar a un área libre de contaminación,
apagar el GS40, ventilar el área de búsqueda y repetir lo
operación desde el paso 2.
Si existieran fugas de gran intensidad en el área de búsqueda,
la alta sensibilidad del modelo GS40 cuando se ha seleccio-
nado la posición HI pudiera impedir la localización precisa
de la fuga. En esos casos, se debe salir a un área libre de
contaminación, seleccionar la posición LO y volver a iniciar la
búsqueda. Las fugas más intensas se deben localizar y repa-
rar primero.
La manera apropiada de localizar fugas con le modelo GS40
es la de barrer u “olfatear” el sitio donde se sospecha que
pudiera haber una fuga. Estos sitios son las uniones solda-
das, acoplamientos y válvulas en el sistema. Si se obtienen
repetidas alarmas en un mismo sitio, la fuga ha sido local-
izada.

MANTENIMIENTO
El modelo GS40 ha sido diseñado para proveer años de du-
rabilidad y confiabilidad de funcionamiento. Aunque el instru-
mento no requiere mantenimiento rutinario aparte del cambio
de las baterías, es preciso tener en cuenta ciertos puntos de
cuidado.
1. CUIDADO DEL SENSOR:
El sensor utilizado en el modelo GS40 es el resultado de
años de investigación en el área de detección de fugas. Su
tamaño y bajo consumo resultan en el sensor ideal para
instrumentos portátiles.
El sensor del modelo GS40 tiene una
rejilla de acceso al frente. Esta rejil-
la jamás debe de estar obstruida con
grasa o polvo y si entrara agua den-
tro del sensor, su funcionamiento se
vería dañado. Si alguna de estas co-
sas sucediera sería necesario reem-
plazar el sensor como se indica a
continuación.
2. REEMPLAZO DEL SENSOR:
Desatornille la tapa de la caja del
sensor como se indica en la figura
3. Extraiga el sensor de su enchufe y
bótelo. Observando que la lengüeta
de polaridad encaje en la ranura pro-
vista, encaje el Nuevo sensor en el enchufe. Véase la figu-
ra 3 para detalles de esta operación. Una vez que el sensor
este colocado apropiadamente en su enchufe, atorníllese
la tapa de la caja.
3. REEMPLAZO DE LAS BATERÍAS:
Durante el período de calentamiento del sensor, la bombilla
LED en el frente del instrumento indica el estado de las bat-
erías. Cuando las baterías están completamente cargadas,
la bombilla LED enciende fuertemente. Al descargarse las
baterías, la intensidad de iluminación de la bombilla LED
disminulle hasta apagarse cuando el estado de carga de las
baterías no es aceptable. Se recomienda que las baterías
se reemplacen antes de que la bombilla LED se apague
completamente. Use baterías frescas de tipo AA alcalinas o
de NiMH recargables. Estas últimas baterías deben recar-
garse usando el dispositivo de carga recomendado por el
fabricante de las baterías. Favor de referirse a la figura 1
para efectuar el reemplazo de las baterías.

GENERELLE BESCHREIBUNG
Dieses Gerät, Type GS40 ist ein komplett in sich geschlos-
senes Gas-Lecksuchgerät zur Aufspürung von Leckagen bei
den meisten brennbaren Gasen. Ein leistungsfähiger Gas-
Sensor, kombiniert mit einem äußerst stabilen Schaltsystem
und ausgestattet mit einem hörbaren Alarmton entsprechend
der austretenden Gaskonzentration. Weiter Ausstattung ist
der Anschluss für einen Ohrhörer bei geräuschvoller Umge-
bung, sowie sichtbare Leckanzeige.
Der Sensor wurde umfassend getestet und hat bei normaler
Anwendung eine durchschnittliche Lebensdauer von ca.
5 Jahren. Der Sensor ist tauglich für eine breit ausgelegte
Erkennung von brennbaren Gasen und anderen toxischen
Verunreinigungen. Reaktionswerte von weniger als 25 ppm
sind möglich.
Ein modernes Design kombiniert mit einem leistungsfähigen
Sensor aus Zinnoxyd erlaubt einen langen Arbeitseinsatz
mit einem Paket aus 4 Stück AA-Batterien. Das Resultat ist
ein tragbares, leichtgewichtiges Instrument mit einer ca. 46
cm langen und flexiblen Metall-Messsonde mit der Sie die
meisten schwierigen Messpunkte erreichen.
Die Arbeitsweise von dieser GS40 ist vollautomatisch. Es
sind keine manuellen Einstellungen erforderlich um die volle
Leistungsfähigkeit und besondere Haltbarkeit des Gerätes
zu entfalten. Schalten Sie einfach das Gerät ein, indem Sie
den Schiebeschalter auf die Sensitiv-Position „ LO oder HI „
schieben. Warten Sie eine kurze Zeit denn der Sensor muss
sich erst erwärmen und auf die jeweilige Umgebungsatmo-
sphäre einstellen. Die GS40 startet dann mit einem langsam
tickenden und hörbaren Alarm welcher für Sie dann das Sig-
nal ist, das das Gerät bereits für die Lecksuche ist. Während
der Aufwärmphase informiert Sie eine rote und helle LED über
den Ladezustand der Batterien. Klar leuchtende LED besagt
dass die Batterien gut geladen sind. Schwach leuchtende LED
besagt das die Batterien schwach geladen sind und ausge-
tauscht werden müssen.
Der Sensor in der Messsonde der GS40 hat eine normale Leb-
ensdauer von mehr als 5 Jahren. Sollte jedoch einmal durch
Sturz, Feuchtigkeit, oder anderer Unachtsamkeit der Sensor
beschädigt werden, kann dieser wieder leicht und mühelos
gemäß der Anleitung ausgetauscht werden.
Die GS40 ist nicht Elektrotechnisch Eigensicher gemäß der
Klasse 1, Absatz 1 der Atmosphäre und sollte EIN und AUS
geschaltet werden in der Gegend wo keine brennbare Gase
anwesend sind.

1. Legen Sie 4 Stück von den Alkaline
AA Batterien in das Batteriefach ein
gemäß dem Hinweis innerhalb von
dem Batteriefach.
2. Schalten Sie das Gerät ein indem Sie
den Schiebeschalter auf der Front-
seite des Gerätes in die LO-Posi-
tion schieben wie in Fig.2 zu sehen.
Das Gerät ist nun in der Position für
leichte Sensitivität eingestellt.
Achtung: Führen Sie diesen Schritt
in einer sauberen und nicht kon-
taminierten Umgebung durch.
3. Warten Sie ca. 30 Sekunden bis der
hörbare Alarm in der LO Position zu
ticken beginnt.
4. Beginnen Sie mit der Lecksuche.
5. Sollten Sie keine Leckage gefunden haben, gehen Sie dann
zu einem Ort welcher frei von jeglicher Kontaminierung ist.
Schalten Sie das Gerät in die HI Position und wiederholen
ab Punkt 3.
AREITSSCHRITTE
Die GS40 ist ein vollautomatisches Instrument und stellt sich
selbst auf die jeweilige Hintergrund-Kontamination ein. Für den
Anwender bedeutet das, dass bei jedem Standortwechsel mit
unterschiedlicher Konzentration der Hintergrund-Kontami-
nation das Gerät einen Alarmton abgibt. Jedoch stellt sich das
Gerät ab sofort auf diese Kontaminierung ein und beginnt mit
dem langsamen Ticken.
Achtung: Sollten Sie eine Hintergrundkontamination erken-
nen, dann gehen Sie zurück in eine saubere Umgebung.
Schalten Sie das Gerät aus „OFF“ und durchlüften Sie die
Umgebung und wiederholen diesen Arbeitschritt von Punkt
2.
Bei größeren Leckagen ist eine genaue Erkennung der Un-
dichtigkeitsstelle in der HI-Position schwierig. In solchen Fäl-
len verlassen Sie den Ort und gehen zu der nächsten sauberen
Umgebung. Stellen Sie den Schiebeschalter in die LO-Position
und wiederholen Sie die Schritte ab Punkt 3. Größere und leicht
erkennbare Leckagen sollte immer zuerst repariert werden.
Die beste Arbeitsweise um eine Leckage mit der GS40 zu fin-
den ist, wenn Sie mit dem Sensor an den vermuteten Stellen
wie Ventile, Fittings und viele andere Verbindungen hin und
herschwenken. Wiederholender Alarm an den gleichen Stellen
ist ein sicheres Zeichen dafür, dass hier die Leckage sein sollte.

INSTANDHALTUNG
Die GS40 ist ein stabiles Instrument und für die Servicein-
dustrie mit der erforderlichen Haltbarkeit und Zuverlässig-
keit ausgestattet. Obwohl keine regelmäßige Instandhaltung
durchgeführt werden muss außer das regelmäßig die Bat-
terien gewechselt werden müssen sollten Sie jedoch dieses
Gerät immer sorgfältig behandeln um eine maximale Lebens-
Dauer zu erhalten.
1. SENSOR:
Der in diesem Gerät eingebaute Gassensor ist ein Produkt
welches über Jahre entwickelt und erforscht wurde. Die
kleine Größe von dem Sensor und der damit verbundene
geringe Stromverbrauch erlaubt ein langes ausgedehntes
Arbeiten mit einem tragbaren Gerät.
Der Sensor hat eine metallische Grill-
front. Diese Grillfront erlaubt es,
dass die kontaminierte Luft mit dem
inneren Sensorelement in Kontakt
kommt. Bei der Luftansaugung kann
sich unter normalen Umständen die-
ser Grill nicht durch Verschmutzun-
gen wie Fette und Ölablagerungen
verstopfen. Falls es doch einmal der
Fall sein, müssen Sie den Sensor
austauschen. Weiterhin sollten Sie
darauf achten, dass dieser Sensor
nicht mit jeglichen Feuchtigkeiten in
Verbindung kommen. Sollte dieser
doch einmal der Fall sein, bitte sofort
den Sensor austauschen.
2. SENSOR AUSTAUSCH:
Um den Sensor auszutauschen schrauben Sie einfach die
vordere Spitze von dem Sensorgehäuse ab und nehmen
den Sensor heraus. Stecken Sie den neuen Sensor in
die vorgegebenen Steckvertiefungen und achten Sie da-
rauf dass die vorgegebenen Kerben übereinander zeigen.
Schrauben Sie die Spitze wieder fingerfest auf, wie in Ab-
bildung 3 zu erkennen.
3. BATTERY AUSTAUSCH:
Wenn die rote LED in der Frontseite des Gerätes nur noch
schwach leuchtet, ist es Zeit die Batterien zu erneuern.
Mit der GS40 kann dann zwar noch für eine kurze Zeit
weiter gearbeitet werden, aber man sollte niemals so lange
warten bis das LED Licht total erloschen ist. Tauschen Sie
somit also immer rechtzeitig alle 4 Batterien gleichzeitig
aus, wie auch in der Abbildung 1 zu erkennen. Sie können
auch diese normalen Batterien gegen „ Wiederaufladbare „
Batterien austauschen. Lediglich können Sie diese wiede-
raufladbaren Batterien nicht in der GS40 wieder aufladen.
Sie benötigen dann dafür spezielles, vom Hersteller emp-
fohlenes Ladegerät.
