PRE-INSTALLATIONCONSIDERATIONS
BEFORE BEGINNING,check all vehiclemanufacturer cautionsandwarnings regardingelectricalservice (AIR BAGS, ABS
BRAKES, ENGINE / BODYCOMPUTER AND BATTERY).
PLANOUT YOUR INSTALLATION anddeterminemost suitablelocationsfor all components to be placed. These components
include: themoduleitself, valet/program button,possiblerelays, andantenna/receiver (RS1301/3/4DP, 1604TW1,1704TW2,
1804FM only, theRS-1300DP modeldoes not include antennaor remotes.) Allow enoughwire to create aservice loop withstrain
relief, should servicing be required. This will also allow easier access and mounting.
DAMAGE to the CoolStart unit resulting from incorrect installation or failure to follow guidelines stated in thisbook will not be
covered under warranty and will be subject to repair or replacement charges.
USE AVOLT/OHM METER to test and locate all connections. Test Lights candamage a vehicle’s computer systems.
ADDITIONALPARTS,whichare not included withthisunit, may be needed for yourparticular vehicle. These itemsmay include
extra relays or Anti-Theft System Bypass modules.

INSTALLATIONCAUTIONS&WARNINGS
**FORSAFETYREASONS,DONOTINSTALL invehicles withMANUALTRANSMISSIONS.** Ifaccidentallyleft in
gear, aremotestarted vehiclecouldbecomeaself-propelled threat tolifeand property.
DO NOT extend the Remotestart ignition harness length. Mount the modulesothat mainharness reachesall ignition
switchwiring. Extending thesewirescouldresult inpoor or improper performance.
DONOT routeanywiring thatmaybecomeentangled withbrake,gaspedals,steering columnor anyother moving parts
inthe vehicle.
DONOT exceed the rated outputcurrentofanycircuiton the Remotestartmodule.Failure toobservethiswarning will
result indamage tothe unit not covered under warranty.
DONOT remotestartthe vehicleinaclosed garage!Makesure thatthe garage door isopen or there isadequate
ventilation. Failure toobservethisrulecouldresult ininjuryor deathfrompoisonousCarbon Monoxide fumes.

PIN1:YELLOW/WHITE:(-) HORN CHIRP/HONK OUTPUT
Connecttothe LOWCURRENTNegativeHorn Trigger wire usuallylocated near the steering column.Ifthe vehiclehorn
circuitrequires+12V,then arelayisrequired.RELAYWIRING: Connectthe Yellow/Whitewire toterminal#85,connect
relayterminals#86 and #87 to+12Vconstant power. Connect terminal#30 tothe +12VpositiveHorn activation wire.
PIN2:BLACK:MAINSYSTEMGROUND
Connecttochassismetalofthe vehicle.Anexisting boltor screwmayprovide an adequateground,or drill asmall hole,
scrape awaypaintand attachusing asheetmetalscrew&star washer.Thiswire mustbe connected toaproper ground
or undesirableand inconsistent operation will occur. Donot useFactoryground locations.
PIN3:YELLOW/BLACK:(-) IGNITIONOUTPUT-or-ANTI-GRIND/STARTERDISABLEOUTPUT
Thisnegativeoutputwire isprogrammableand can function twodifferentways.Itcan be used asaNegativeIgnition
outputfor GMAnti-theft and Transponder Bypass modules,or itcan be programmed tofunction asan Antigrind/Starter
Disableoutput. AsaNegativeIgnition wire,thiswire turnson when the remotestartbutton ispressed and stayson
through the duration ofthe remotestart. Asan Antigrind/Starter disablethiswire activateswhen the Lockbutton on the
remoteispressed and during remotestart. When using thiswire for an Antigrind/Starter disable, an optionalRelayis
needed tointerruptthe Starter circuit. The starter disablecircuitaddsan anti-theft feature tothisremotestartsystemand
preventsaccidentalgrinding of the starter if keyisturned too far after aremotestart. See diagramson NEXTPAGE.

PIN6:GRAY:(-) NEGATIVE HOODPINSWITCH (REQUIREDFORPROGRAMMING)
Connectthe Graywire toaswitchthatisatground when the hood isopen.Ifan existing switchisnotavailable,then we
recommend one tobe installed.When thiswire isgrounded,the remotestartisinhibited.Ifhood isopened on aremote
started engine,the unitwill immediatelyshutthe motor off. The unitwill notattempttostartifhood isopen.The hood pin
isalsoused for remotetransmitter programming.
PIN7:PINK:NEGATIVE GLOWPLUG
ConnectPinkwire toindicator circuitthatshowsa(-) Signalwhilethe “WAITTOSTARTLAMP”ison.When thiswire is
used, the systemwill wait until light turnsoff before attempting aremotestart.
PIN8:PURPLE:(+12V)BRAKERESET
Connectthe Purplewire tothe side ofbrakepedalswitchthatshows+12 voltsONLYwhen pedalisdepressed.Thisisthe
wire that turnsoff the remotestart oncethe driver’skeyisinthe Ignition and turned tothe ONposition.
PIN9:ORANGE/BLACK:(-) OEMDISARMOUTPUT
Thiswire providesaGround pulsetodisarmthe vehicles' Factoryanti-theft systemprior toaRemoteStart. Connectthis
wire tothe vehicles' anti-theft disarmwire.Thiswire issometimesfound coming off the Driver's door keyswitchor atthe
FactoryAnti-theft controlmodule. Thiswire maynot be needed if FactorySecurityonlyrequiresadoor unlockpulse.
PIN10:ORANGE:(-) OEMREARMOUTPUT
Thiswire providesaground pulsetorearmthe vehicles' FACTORYanti-theft systemafter atimed-outor aborted remote
start. Connect thiswire tothe vehicles' anti-theft rearmwire or tothe door pincircuitdepending on your requirements.
Thiswire maybe needed topulsethe door pincircuit on vehicleswithretained accessorypower.
PIN12:RED/WHITE:TACHOMETERINPUT
When installing the systeminTachmode,thiswire mustbe connected toavalidsourceofACvoltage.Thiswire allows
the unit tosensethe engine running and controlthe starter motor. See TACH REFERENCEMODE.
PROGRAM/OVERRIDESWITCH:2PINPLUG (REQUIREDFORPROGRAMMING &LEARNING REMOTES)
Thisswitchisused for programming features,transmitters,valetmode,and tooverride the optionalstarter disable(if
installed) inthe event of anon-operating remotecontrol.
LED:2PINPLUG (OPTIONAL)
The LEDisused asaVALET/PROGRAMMING indicator and it will alsoFLASHfor useassecuritydeterrentwhen the
optionalANTI-GRIND/STARTERDISABLEoutput isprogrammed.

turnsONwiththe second position of the key, STAYSONWHENCRANKING, and continuesONasthe vehicleruns.
PINK/WHITE:+12VMULTI-FUNCTIONOUTPUT30A(JUMPERSELECTABLE):
Thisisan optionalmulti-function outputwire the can be configured asaSecond IGN,ACC or STARTERoutput. Some
vehiclesrequire more than justone IGN,ACC,or STARTERwire inorder tostartand run successfully.Ifthisisthe case
for your particular vehicle,then usethe jumper pinlocated under the access panelon the top ofthe CoolStartcontrol
moduletoconfigure thiswire tosuit your needs. The DEFAULTsetting isIGNITION. See Jumper PinDiagram.
WHITE:+12Vor(-) NEGATIVE PARKING LIGHTOUTPUT:
Connecttovehicleparking light circuit at the backof light switchor if thisisnot possible, connect directlytoone of the
parking lightsatthe frontofthe vehicle.Ifyour vehiclehasamultiplexlighting systemthatrequiresa(-) Negativeparking
lightoutput, then open the access door on the top ofthe moduleand movethe jumper.See Jumper Pinsection.Some
European vehiclesrequire separateleft and rightcircuits.Useadualrelayor diodestoisolatethe output. Notethe
current limit on the Negativeparking light output. You mayrequire an externalrelaytoprevent damage tothe unit.

the vehicle.Toinstall aftermarket systemsinthesevehicles, an interfacemoduleisrequired that convertsthe regular
lock/unlockpulsesinto“Datamessages”toallowlocking &unlocking. Interfacemodulesare soldseparately.

“SMART TACHLESS”MODE
Your CoolStart systemincludesaunique voltage monitor called “SmartTachless”mode.Thismode allowsthisunitto
efficientlystart an engine withoutthe useofatachsignalwire.Thesemodulesactivelymonitor the voltage levelofthe
vehicletocontrolthe starter motor eachtimearemotestart isrequested.
IMPORTANTNOTES:
(1) SETUPmaybe required for the CoolStart“SmartTachless”Mode.Ifyour vehiclehasnotbeen atrestfor aperiod of
time(Hotengine),then you mustdrainthe surfacecharge fromthe battery.Unplug mainpower harness fromunit, turn
HEADLIGHTSONfor 4minutestodrainoff excess surfacecharge on vehicle’sbatterythen reconnect.
(2) Onthe rare occasion that“SmartTachless”mode doesnotoperatesatisfactorily,change the voltage referencelevel
asdescribed below, or useadifferent mode suchas“Tach” mode, or “Timed Crank”mode.
“SMARTTACHLESS”ADJUSTMENT:
Inthe event“SmartTachless”over-cranksor under-cranksyour starter,the settingscan be changed.The purposeof
adjusting the “SmartTachless”Mode istoraiseor lower the voltage referencethresholdfromthe 93%defaultpoint.
Raising or lowering this93%pointshouldincreaseor decreaseyour cranking timerespectively.The adjustmentrange is
from80%to100%inone percent increments. Followstepsbelowtoadjust the referencelevel.
1.Open hood (or ground Graywire if no hood pinisinstalled)
2.Turn the keytothe ONposition (Pinkwire must be connected!)
3.Press programbutton 5times, after afewsecondsthe unit will flashthe lightsand/or honkhorn 5times.
4.Carefullypress the programbutton 21 timestogettooption level21.You mustgetalightflashand/or horn honkafter
eachpress. If the lightsdidn’tflashand/or horn doesnothonk,then the unitdidnotregister your button press.Only
count the light flashand/or horn honk.
5.Press the LockButton #1 on the remotetodecreaseby1%(lightswill flashand/or horn honk1Xfor eachpress);Press
the UnlockButton #2 toincreaseby1%(lightswill flashand/or honkhorn 2Xfor eachpress);Press the TrunkButton
#3 toresetto93%(lightswill flash3X).The unitwill stop providing lightflasheswhen you reachthe bottom(79%)or
the top (100%)ofthe adjustmentrange.Ifyou losttrack,then justpress Button #3 toresetbackto93%and begin
raising or lower again.
6.Turn Ignition OFF, Closehood (or un-ground the Graywire) and checkoperation.
NOTE:ThisSmartTachless adjustmentfeatureisnotavailableon theRS-1300DPModelthat has no remote
transmittersorantenna.Ifyou must use thisfeatureon aRS-1300DP,thenaremote and anantennamodule
fromanRS-1301/3/4DPmust beusedtoset thedesiredlevel. Once programmed, remove antenna.

TACH FINDER&USEFUL TIPS
TACH FINDERMODE:
ThisTachFinder mode can assistinlocating aTachsourcefor your installation.When following the steps,the unitwill
begintoflashthe parking lightsifyou havethe Red/Whitewire connected toatachsource.Iflightsdo notflash,then try
another wire until you locateatachsignalthatwill causethe Parking lightstoflash.NOTE:Onsomevehiclesequipped
withdaytimerunning lights,itmaybe difficulttosee anyflashing parking lights.Inthiscaseyour onlynotification will be
the slight “ticking” sound coming fromthe module’sflashing light relay.
TACH FINDERSTEPS:
1.Open hood (or ground Grayhood pinwire if no hood pinisinstalled)
2.Start Engine withthe key. (Pinkwire must be connected!)
3.Press the Programbutton for 2seconds
4.Lightswill beginflashing if the Red/Whitewire isconnected toavalidtachsource. If not tryadifferent tachwire.

TACH FINDERTIP:ColdWeather/ High IdleSimulation:
The tachfinder mode can alsobe used tohelpdetermine howyour CoolStart systemmayoperateinacoldweather
situation. Onceyou haveavalidtachsourceprogrammed intoyour system, followtest stepsbelow.
1. Go back into the tachfinder mode.
2. Youshould have a consistent light flash(like directionalor emergency flashers).
3. Slowly raise the RPM levelonyour vehicle to simulate a “warm-up idle” that is higher thanthe normalidle level. If and
whenthe lights STOP flashing. Means that this is the point at whichthe tachsignalis out of range of the system.
4. We recommend that youbring the RPM levelup to between1000 and 1500 RPMs to simulate a cold morning idle.
5. If the lights stop flashing too quickly, thenwe recommend using another tachsource. This may help prevent the engine
from starting and stalling inthe morning or cold weather.

INTRODUCTION
Tachsignalswill varyinlevelsand frequenciesdepending on manyfactorsincluding the type ofvehicleand the sourceof
the signal.The signalsfromavehicle’sinjector wire and coil packwire can varygreatlyeven on the sameengine.The
tachsignalfroman engine can alsobe affected byother sourcessuchaselectronicnoisefromthe ignition or computer
modules.Recentimprovementshavebeen made tothe circuitrytoallowthisCoolStartsystemtosenseawider range of
tachsignalsthan previousmodels.
TACH MODE
The Tachmode providesreliableremotestarting performancethrough engine speed (RPM)sensing.When using Tach
ReferenceMode,the Red/Whitewire isused for Tachsignal[Engine RPM]input. Mostmodern enginesinclude various
pointswhere the Engine Speed [Tach]or A/Csignalmaybe obtained.TachSignalexamples:Negative(-) side ofignition
coil,atthe Distributor or Ignition ControlModule,Coil Pack,Engine Computer,or Crankshaft Sensor.SometimesFuel
injectors,and Alternator stator pinscan be used.TheseTachSignallocationsmentioned are provided asaguide.Your
vehiclemaydiffer. Somelocationswill NOTbe agood location for Tachsourcedue toRFnoiseor Computer Data.
TACH PROGRAMMING:
1.Open hood (or ground Grayhood pinwire if no hood pinisinstalled.)
2.Red/Whitewire shouldbe connected toavalidTachsource.
3.Start engine withkey. (Pinkwire must be connected!)
4.Press programbutton 5times, then wait for 5light flashesand/or 5horn honks.
5.Pushprogrambutton more once. (You must get one light flashand/or honkafter button ispressed.)Thisunit is
nowat option #1-TachLearning.
6.Press the #1 LockButton on remotetransmitter. The unit will read the Tachsourceand flashthe lightsand or
honkoncefor programconfirmation. (OnRS1300DPmodelswithout remotetransmitters, press the brakepedalin
thisstep.)
7.If lightsdo not flashfor confirmation, then tryanother tachsourceor trythe tachfinder tolocateanother wire
EXAMINING THE TACH FREQUENCYWITH ADIGITAL MULTI-METER
If youownaDigitalMulti-Meter meter withafrequency counter setting, itcanbe helpfulto measure andresearchtherange of tach
signalfrom yourparticular engine. Whenprobingyourchosentachwire, observe thefrequency readingfrom themeter at boththe
warm/low engineidleandcold/high engineidlepoints. Tachsignalsrangingbetween70Hzand700Hzare desired. If yourtach
wire has readings that are not inthisrange, theunitmay not operate properly. Thefrequency of thetachwire inthisrange does
not guarantee operation.If youcannot locate agood tachsource from yourengine, thenyoucanswitchyourCoolStartsystem to
the “Smart Tachless” or “Timed Crank”.

cranking outputcombined withthe useofthe Red/Whitetachwire asan engine ON/OFF monitor.The Red/WhiteTach

ARE2LEVELSofprogramming required:First, setthe systemfor “Timed Crank”operation,and secondlyyou mayneed
toadjustthe amountofcranking time.There are 4differentcranktimesavailablefor use.SEE OPTION

HOWTO USE THISFEATURE:
1.Gotothe “ProgrammableOptions”section ofthismanual,and turn “ON”Option #15 "Timed Crank".(Itisnormallyon
TachMonitor)
2.With“Timed Crank”turned ON,you will STILL havetoconnectthe Red/WhiteTachwire toatachsourceon the
engine.The Red/WhiteTachwire becomesasimple“Engine Monitor”.Although the unitwill notbe using the
Red/Whitewire tostartthe motor,itwill be using thiswire todetermine whether the motor isrunning or not. Thisisa
mandatoryconnection. A“crude” or “less exact”tachsourcecan be used onlywhen in“TimeCrank”mode.
3.Using the vehiclekey, start the engine afewtimestogeta“feel”ofhowlong the cranking timeis.Oncethe “Timed
Crank”mode isturned on,the defaultcranking timeissettoadefaultof0.50 seconds.Werecommend beginning with
thissetting. Tryaremotestart and see if the cranking isappropriatefor your vehicle
4.If0.50 secondsisnotan appropriatestarter cranking time,then go toProgramming Option #18 and change the crank
timesetting toalonger value. The valuesare asfollows: 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, and 1.5seconds.
WARNING:Thismethod ofstarting thevehicleisnotas reliableas using regular“Tach”orSmartTachless
modes.Thismethod shouldbeusedonlyintheeventthat atachwirecannotbelocatedusing thenormaltach
programming and tachfinder.Whenusing thismethod,theremaybecertainoperating anomalies requiring
seasonal adjustments. These are, butnotlimitedto:
·Starter mayunder-crankinextremecoldweather.Vehiclemaynotstarton 1st attemptand mayrequire a2nd or 3rd try.
·Inwarmweather when your vehiclemaystart veryquickly, “Timed Crank”mode maytend toover-crankthe starter.
·The onlywaystocorrect the aboveissuesare togo toOption #18 and adjust the cranking time.
·When in“Timed Crank”mode,the cranking timecan onlybe adjusted manuallythrough option #18.When the system
isinTachor Smart Tachless modesthe cranking timeiscontrolled automaticallybythe microprocessor.

DIESEL GLOW PLUGDELAY
Thisfeature providesasolution for dieselvehicleswithouthaving toconnecttothe GlowPlug-“WaittoStartCircuit”.This
maybe needed for variousreasons.Ifyour vehicledoesnothaveaviable“WaittoStartCircuit”,or you cannotlocateand
identifythe circuit, then change your systemto“DieselGlowPlug Delay”mode.You can choosefromaselection of“pre-
cranking” delaytimes.Oncethismode isactivated,the systemwill NOLONGERmonitor the PINKglowplug inputwire
and will useadelaysetting chosen bythe installer inthe option chart.
NOTES:Thisfeature isOFF bydefaultand mustbe programmed before use.Oncethisfeature isturned ON,the Pink
Glowplug inputwire isnotused.The Remotestartunitwill alwayswaitthe programmed timebefore cranking EVENIF
the glowplug warmsup first. There are 3differentDelaytimesavailablefor use:10,20,or 30 seconds.SEE OPTION

HOWTO USE THISFEATURE:

The option controlswhether the doorswill automaticallylock/unlockon your vehiclewhen driving or withturning the
