Safety Requirements!
CAUTION: TO REDUCE RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, DO NOT REMOVE THE COVER OR

NO USER-SERVICEABLE PARTS INSIDE. PLEASE REFER TO A QUALIFIED SERVICE
TECHNICIAN.
A. Read Instructions: All safety and operation instructions should be read before the product
is operated.
B. Retain Instructions: The safety and operating instructions should be retained for future
reference.
C. Heed Warnings: All of the warnings on this product and in the operating instructions should
be adhered to.
D. Follow Instructions: All operating and use instructions should be followed.
E. Cleaning: Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid
cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a slightly damp cloth for cleaning.
F. Water and Moisture: Do not use this product near water.
G. Accessories: Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand, tripod, bracket or table.
The product may fall, causing serious injury, and serious damage to the product.
H. Ventilation: Slots and openings in the unit are provided for ventilation and to ensure
reliable operation of the product, to protect it from overheating, thus these openings must not
be blocked or covered. This product should not be placed in a built-in installation such as a
bookcase or rack unless proper ventilation is provided or the manufacturer's instructions have
been adhered to.
I. Grounding: This product is equipped with a three-wire grounding-type plug, a plug having a
third (grounding) pin. This plug will only fit into a grounding-type power outlet. This is a safety
feature. If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet, contact your electrician to replace
your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the grounding-type plug.

J. Power Cord Protection: Power supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to
be walked on or pinched by items placed upon them, paying particular attention to cords at
plugs and the point where they exit the product.
K. Lightning: For added protection of this product during a lightning storm or when it is left
unattended and unused for long periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet. This will prevent
damage to the product due to lightning and power-line surges.
L. Overloading: Do not overload wall outlets or extension cords as this can result in a risk of
fire or electric shock.
M. Object and Liquid Entry: Never push objects of any kind into this product through the
openings as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short out parts that could result in a
fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on the product.
N. Servicing: Do not attempt to service this product yourself as opening or removing covers
may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified service
personnel.
O. Damage Requiring Service: Unplug this product from the wall outlet and refer servicing to
qualified service personnel under the following conditions:
1) When the power supply cord has been damaged
2) If liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the product
3) If the product has been exposed to rain, water, or other conductive liquids
4) If the product does not operate normally by following the operating instructions
5) If the product has been dropped or damaged in any way
6) When the product exhibits a distinct change in performance.
P. Replacement Parts: When replacement parts are required, be sure the service technician
has used replacement parts specified by the manufacturer or have the same characteristics as
the original part. Unauthorized substitutions may result in fire, electric shock, or other
hazards.
Q. Heat: The product should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, heat
registers, stoves or other products that produce heat.

Terminology:
Avalanche Voltage: Avalanche diodes are used in automotive applications due to their low
break over voltage, which provides a diversionary path for voltage
surges or spikes that can be harmful to the automotive electrical
system. (Also referred to as Zener Diodes.) The CDT65 will
automatically detect when an Avalanche type diode is being tested
and will apply the correct test voltage.
Break Over Voltage: The reverse voltage at which the diode will respond with a sharp rise
in destructive current flow. Typically the higher the break over voltage
a diode has the better that diode is. Low break over voltage to a non-
avalanche type diode can be destructive to the diode.
Forward Voltage Drop: The voltage lost across the diode (@ test current) in the forward
direction due to resistance. High voltage drop indicates high
resistance across the diode. A diode with high resistance may operate
at a higher temperature and may have a shorter life.
Reverse Leakage Current: The amount of current that passes through the diode in the
reverse direction. The CDT65 measures the leakage and
automatically matches the reverse voltage to the diode.
Open: A diode with very high resistance. An open diode will not allow current
to pass through it.
Shorted: A diode with a shorted circuit can allow current to pass in both
directions.
Microamp (A): 1 microamp = .000001 Amp (1000 A = 1mA), CDT65A measures
microamps
Milliamp (mA): 1 milliamp = .001 Amp,

3.0 Test Instructions
1. Turn the power switch on.
2. Adjust the screen contrast by pressing the buttons below the + and – to lighten or
darken the screen.
3. Setup machine with the Special Setup Mode.
4. Determine which type of diode will be tested.
5. Program the Specs to match the diodes limits.
6. Adjust the Setup and save as required.
7. Select the Test diode type that corresponds to the diode with the correct limits.
8. Test the diode.
4.0 Test Mode Functions
After the TEST button has been pressed the following screen will appear. Select the
button for the type of diode to be tested. The function buttons correspond to the text
displayed above them.
It is then possible to select the type of diode and pre-programmed test limits. By pressing
the SPECS button the test limits can be programmed. The test limit selections correspond
with the specifications that are accessible by pressing the SPECS button
Example: When the SPECS button has been selected you can choose which type of
diode to program limit settings for. If the TRIO B (F2) button is pressed, programmed,
and saved then the corresponding TRIO B (F2) button available in TEST mode will use
the limits stored in SPECS mode.

The table on the following page can be copied and the values can be entered for future
use. To test diodes the operator must have the information from the following table
programmed into the tester. The operator can change these settings quickly and easily.
These settings can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the diode.

Diode Testing Screen
The top left of the screen indicates which type of diode is selected. During testing the following
events can or will occur:
Open indicates an open diode or poor test connection.
Short indicates a shorted diode or test connection.
Diode indicates that actual measurements are displayed
to the right of the digits indicates the actual measured parameter is above the limit.
to the right of the digits indicates the actual measured parameter is below the limit.
The tester will display the break over or avalanche voltage, voltage drop, and micro amps of
leakage of the diode.
One beep indicates the diode has passed and the lead connections match the polarity of the
diode tested. Two beeps indicate the diode has passed and the leads are reversed in
reference to the diode’s polarity. The tester will automatically switch the connections internally
to compensate for reversed test leads if the REVERSE function is enabled in the setup mode.

5.0 Setup Mode Functions
REPORT (F1)
When the REPORT function is enabled it is possible to print out the report below after any
quantity of diodes has been tested. The REPORT function is off when there is an X through its
icon. At the top of the setup screen the number of passed and failed diodes since last power
up or reset is displayed.

RESET
To reset the statistical numbers at the top of the setup screen to zero press RESET (F2).
PRINT
When testing any quantity of diodes it is possible to automatically print the test results for each
diode that passes the test. An example of one diodes test results is displayed below. The
D&V printer # DPU414 can be used for this report. The PRINT function is off when there is an
X through its icon.

REVERSE
The CDT-65A will automatically switch the test leads internally if the test leads are reversed if
the REVERSE function is enabled. When REVERSE is disabled it is not possible to test a
diode if the test leads are reversed, this is useful for sorting diodes by polarity. The REVERSE
function is off when there is an X through its icon.
SOUND
When SOUND is selected an audible beep will sound to identify a passed diode. One beep
indicates the leads connections match the polarity of the diode tested. Two beeps indicate the
diode has passed and the leads are reversed in reference to the diode’s polarity. The SOUND
function is off when there is an X through its icon.
SAVE
Save the setup into the testers memory by pressing the SAVE (F6) button. Pressing SAVE
will save the setup so that the next time the machine is turned on the setup will be the same.
Exiting without saving the setup, by pressing one of the three mode buttons, will only save the
setup as long as the power is on to the tester.

6.0 Test Specifications
To enter the limits used in test mode press the SPECS button. Then select which type of
diode to test Trio, Rectifier or Avalanche. For each type of diode it is possible to store two
different sets of limits for example: Trio A (F1) and Trio B (F2). Select the diode to program
and press the corresponding function key below the text. Follow the instructions on the screen
and set the limits. The screen will appear as the example below:

PREV (F1) will switch to the previous screen.
<< (F2) is coarse decrease
<(F3) is fine decrease
> (F4) is fine increase
>> (F5 is coarse increase
NEXT (F6) to save the limits and go to the next parameter
7.0 Self Test
WARNING: Disconnect the test leads when executing Self Test function.
The CDT-65A has a built in self-test feature. The high voltage and high current circuits are
both tested and a pass or fail message will be displayed. To run the self- test turn the tester
off… press and hold the TEST button and turn the tester on, hold the TEST button in until the
Self Test Procedure screen appears. Press any key to execute the Self Test.

8.0 Special Setup Mode
To enter Special Setup Mode press and hold the SETUP button and turn the power switch
on. The password (F1 F5 F2 F6) must be entered.
Select Maximum Break Over Voltage
The operator can then select the maximum break over voltage of the tester. The possibilities
are 100 (F1), 150 (F2), and 200V (F3). Select the voltage by pressing the corresponding
function key below the display. After this has been set the tester will advance to Select pulse
width.
Select Pulse Width
The width or length of time of the pulse can be adjusted. The available possibilities are 200S
(F1), 250S (F2), 500S (F3), and 1000S (F4).
Select the pulse width by pressing the corresponding function key below the displayed value.
After the pulse width has been set, the low test current will be displayed
Low Test Current Setting (Trio)
The amount of current used to test diode trios can be adjusted from 5 to 25 Amps. Use the
corresponding up and down function keys to increase or decrease the current. Press Next
(F6) to proceed to high-test current.
High Test Current Setting (Rectifiers)
The amount of current used to test rectifier diodes can be adjusted from 20 to125 Amps. Use
the corresponding up and down function keys to increase or decrease the current. Press Next
(F6) to write the setup into the memory.

9.0 Calibration
To place the tester into Calibration Mode press and hold the SPECS button and turn the
power switch on. The password is F1 F5 F2 F6.
Select the parameter to calibrate and press the corresponding function key. Connect the
calibration box to the tester. Follow the calibration instructions on the screen. In Calibration
Mode it is possible to do the following:

(F2) Calibrate Leakage Current
(F3) Calibrate Voltage Drop
(F4) Display Calibration Report
(F5) Print Calibration Report
(F6) Set Default Scale
To exit and a save the calibration press TEST, SETUP, or SPECS. A sample calibration
report is below:

10.0 Setting Default Values
The CDT-65A tester has default test and calibration values stored in its memory. To initialize
or restore these values press and hold F4 and turn the power on. When these values have
been restored or initialized the tester should be calibrated.
11.0 General Information
a. Diodes must be clean and dry.
b. When testing with a stator connected, separate and retest diodes that appear faulty. A
faulty stator can cause the diodes to fail the test.
c. In some cases in may be necessary to disconnect a capacitor that may be connected to a
rectifier. Capacitors can cause a rectifier to fail the test.
