1.1 National regulations

Note the appendices
Other documents for the system are included in these operating instructions as an
appendix. The customer documentation includes these operating instructions including all
appendices.
Using the customer documentation
All commissioning work and handling of the system requires accurate knowledge and
observance of the customer documentation. The system is intended only for the application
described in the "Intended use" chapter of these operating instructions.
The customer documentation must be kept in the vicinity of the system so that it can be
located quickly and easily. The customer documentation must be retained and forwarded
to the next operator or user of the system. Every supplement received must be included in
the customer documentation.
1.2.2 Safety instructions
These operating instructions contain a number of warnings of risks and hazards which
might occur when using the system. These warnings contain "signal words" intended to
draw the reader's attention to the degree of hazard to be anticipated.
These signal words and the associated dangers are specified as follows:

Observe the certificates in the "Approvals and certificates" chapter.

1.2.3 Notes on using these operating instructions
Emphases in the text have the following meanings:
• Points and requirements for operating procedures are labeled with bullet points.
1. Handling instructions are labeled with numbers.

Displays on the system are given in "quotation marks."
Item numbers (Item) of figures and illustrations are numbered consecutively in these
operating instructions.
1.3 Intended use
This system is used solely for the following purpose:
• Controlled simulation of fire events with practical fire department exercises and other
emergency responders.
1.4 Limitation of the intended use
Any use other than that described in the "Intended use" chapter should be regarded as
incorrect use. Especially the following points are not permitted:
• Using the system with other mock-ups than with the mock-ups supplied.
• Accessing the system without wearing the personal protective equipment (PPE)
required for the respective tasks and dangers.
Otherwise, the safe operation of the system is at risk.

WARNING
Risk of fatal injury in the event of changes to the system
Modifications and rebuilding of the system performed without written consent of the
manufacturer are prohibited. Dräger accepts no liability for personal injury or material
damage arising as a result of unauthorized modifications.

WARNING
The system’s design, the corresponding customer documentation and the signs and
labeling in the facility all presume that the facility is only used by experts who know the
basic functions of the system.
The instructions on operation and the notices labeled Warning, Danger and Caution are
restricted primarily to the special features of the system.
These operating instructions contain no notices on dangers that can be presumed to be
known to firefighters and rescue teams.

1.6 System-specific dangers
Cordon off the system
Explosion hazard

DANGER
Risk to life may result from unserviced or defective monitoring equipment (pressure
switch, gas detection equipment, sensors, etc.) or from modifications to the monitoring
equipment. Malfunctions are possible because dangers and errors may not be displayed.
• Check pressure switches, sensors, and displays for proper functioning before use.
• Do not adjust, remove, or disable pressure switches, sensors, and displays.
• Regularly service gas detection equipment.
Do not turn off devices to ensure the monitoring and warning function is not disabled.

WARNING
Risk to life may result from unserviced or defective safety equipment or from modifications
to the safety equipment.
Components can come loose, pressure may fail to build up, or pressure may be released
in an uncontrolled manner. Pressurized parts may burst.
• Do not remove, modify or block safety devices such as safety catches, sensors or
emergency stop buttons. Faulty safety equipment must be replaced immediately!
• Do not remove, modify or block safety valves.
Do not operate the system if any one piece of safety equipment is not fully functional!

WARNING
Danger of death and risk of property damage if the system is used by unauthorized
persons.
The operating firm is responsible for cordoning off the system effectively during standstill
times.

WARNING
Explosion hazard when using unsuitable fuels
Only operate the system with propane and wood. When using other fuels, the ignition
capacity of the igniters may be endangered and non-combusted gas may escape.
Only use other fuels if these are expressly given in the description of the fireplace.

WARNING
Explosion hazard due to escaping gas
In the event of uncontrolled gas leaks, do not operate electrical devices.
Take the fire simulation system out of operation immediately. Leaks in gas lines must only
be an rectified by an authorized specialist company or by Dräger in accordance with the
local regulations in force.

WARNING
Explosion hazard due to gas in the waste water
Non-combusted gas may collect in dips and hollows and form a potentially explosive gas
mixture.
Equip the waste water system with gas separators on the operator side. Avoid dips and
hollows at the exercise site, and seal existing dips and hollows to be gas-tight.
!
DANGER
Pressurized parts, such as hoses, may come unfastened suddenly due to manipulation of
the hose and the associated pressure thrust may cause potentially fatal injuries.
Any work on system components must be carried out only when the component is de-
pressurized.
Always open and close the valves slowly in all given procedures. Never unfasten or
tighten hose lines and pipe screw connections under pressure.

WARNING
Risk of injury
• Electrical connections to equipment not mentioned in these instructions for use may be
carried out only following consultation with the manufacturer or an expert.
• Never clean electrical equipment with water or other conductive liquids.
• Check electrical equipment on a regular basis. Re-attach loose connections. Replace
damaged lines immediately. Carry out a visual inspection of the lines before and after
each operation.
• Always keep the switchgear cabinet and all power units sealed. Only trained and
authorized personnel are allowed to access the cabinet.

WARNING
Risk of electric shock
Danger exists:
• When working on the power supply
• With direct contact with live parts or parts that have become live due to a fault
• With electro-static procedures
• With short-circuits and overloads

WARNING
Danger of combustion due to sudden ignition of the fireplaces
Ignition of the fireplace can take place at any time.
When operating the system, do not remain immediately next to or over a fireplace.

CAUTION
When using extinguishers other than water, the function of the system may be impaired.
Only extinguish the fireplaces with water.

NOTICE
The ignition of the fireplaces can be easily delayed in principle. Multiple ignition attempts
may also be necessary. This is not an indicator of a technical fault.
!
WARNING
Risk of combustion
• The gas supply is immediately interrupted by actuating an emergency stop button. The
fireplaces are not extinguished immediately due to the different designs of the pipe
lengths. It can take several seconds until the flames are finally extinguished.
• Delays during ignition may result in flash fires and jets of flame due to gas
accumulations. Inform trainees that a safety distance must be maintained with
extinguished igniters.
• With escaping gas and with gas flow systems where the pipe diameter expands, the
sudden expansion may lead to extremely cold temperatures. Severe frostbite damage
may occur upon contact with unprotected skin.
• When working on igniters, burner elements and sensors, and on the fire room paneling
or on the fireplaces themselves, there is a risk of burning due to direct contact or due to
the thermal radiation of very hot surfaces.
• Any system components may be hot even when the system is switched off.

Risk of explosion and fire
Open flame, light and smoking are prohibited across the entire exercise site.

Do not store any flammable materials in the fire simulation system.
Before every exercise, remove all objects not required from the training areas and
technical room.

Danger of death due to blocked escape routes
All escape routes must be freely accessible and the escape exit doors must be functioning
correctly during an exercise.

1.7 Definition of the target groups

WARNING
The use of untested accessories can result in death or serious physical injury, and to
damage to the system.
Only use the accessories listed in the "Order list" chapter.

CAUTION
Fault-free operation of the system is jeopardized when using propane gas mixtures with a
low propane gas proportion. Components may become contaminated more quickly.
Only use propane gas mixtures with a propane gas proportion of at least 90%.
!
CAUTION
An insufficient illuminated site may result in accidents.
The exercise site must be adequately illuminated so that hazardous situations and escape
routes can be quickly determined at all times.

CAUTION
Danger of equipment damage due to unsuitable extinguishing agents
In the event of a fire in the technical room, only the use of CO2fire extinguishers is
permitted.
During an exercise, keep CO2fire extinguishers within reach of the fire simulation system.

CAUTION
There is an increased danger of crushing injuries on doors and hatches.
Proceed carefully when closing doors and hatches.

Observe the information regarding disposal of foreign and operating materials (see
chapter "Disposal").

NOTICE
The entire system is subject to extreme temperature fluctuations and influences. Because
of this, the system and parts of the system are subject to undue strain and the paint may
be damaged. This sort of damage does not the adversely affect the functionality of the
system in any way. In addition, flash rust due to external influences may develop on the
surfaces, which also does not adversely affect the system’s functionality.
Eliminating this damage and/or contamination at least every six months is recommended.

WARNING
Danger of death and risk of equipment damage as a result of incorrect operation
All work on the system must be carried out only by authorized and trained personnel. The
initial instruction must be carried out by Dräger and confirmed in writing by the instructed
persons.
Only instructed persons are permitted to operate any of the control equipment.

The intended target groups are listed at the beginning of every chapter. The instructions
listed in a chapter only pertain to the target groups mentioned. The following target groups
are addressed in these operating instructions:
Trainer
The trainer must be trained on this system and be authorized by Dräger to operate the fire
simulation system. The trainer is very experienced with the training concept underlying the
system. The trainer knows the possible physical procedures or dangers to the system. The
trainer can operate the fire simulation system with a remote control. The trainer instructs
the trainees on the system before beginning the exercise. The trainer must maintain visual
contact with the exercise participants during the entire exercise. Communication with the
exercise participants must be ensured at all times. The location of all persons must be
known during an exercise and taken into account when performing exercises.
Exercise participants and duty of care to exercise participants
Exercise participants are normally fire department personnel or specially trained persons
with comparable knowledge, who take part in the exercises with the fire simulation system
under the instruction of at least 2 trainers.
• Exercise participants and trainers are only permitted to use the fire simulation system
with suitable breathing safety equipment (open circuit breathing apparatus or
recirculation systems) and protective clothing in accordance with the local fire
department regulations.
• Exercise participants are not permitted to have any piercings, mobile telephones,
pagers and credit cards during the exercises.
• When operating the fire simulation system, suitable sanitary equipment must be
present and ready for operation, in particular for rescue service measures for burns
and in emergency heart situations. The training staff must be familiar with the operation
and handling of the sanitary equipment.
• During operation at least 2 of the trainers must be present to control the fire simulation
system and to instruct and supervise the trainees. At least one trainer must be present
per training group. At least 2 of the trainers must be able to operate the fire simulation
system safely.
• Trainees should be informed of safety precautions, including escape routes, before the
exercise starts.
• There must be a permanent and an adequate extinguishing water supply available
during operation of the fire simulation system. Extinguishing water that has already
been used it not permitted to be re-used in exercises for health reasons.

It is recommended to conduct annual instruction and to log this in writing.

NOTICE
Before entering the training system, the exercise participants must be instructed with
safety training, receive instruction for emergency situations, and carry out a safety exer-
cise without fire with the responsible trainer.

Specially trained personnel
Specially trained personnel are employees of DrägerService or a specialist firm authorized
for the work in question.
The following tasks must be carried out only by specially trained personnel:
• Inspection
• Maintenance
• Repair
Technical personnel
Technical personnel are employees of the company Dräger. They are authorized to carry
out the following activities:
• Initial commissioning
• Initial instruction of the trainers
• Complex maintenance tasks (inspection, maintenance, repair and modification work)
1.8 Personal protective equipment
Personal protective equipment is not part of the scope of delivery.

NOTICE
Dräger recommends concluding a maintenance contract with DrägerService and having
all maintenance work (inspection, maintenance and repair) carried out by DrägerService.

WARNING
Danger due to improper personal protective equipment
The personal protective equipment being worn must be designed for the respective work.
Locally applicable regulations and standards must be adhered to.
Trainers and exercise participants must always wear appropriate personal protective
equipment (self-contained (open-circuit) breathing apparatus or rebreather) and
protective clothing that complies with the local fire department regulations when
performing exercises with the system.

Danger of death due to incorrect operation of the personal protective equipment
Pay attention to the proper use of the personal protective equipment. There is a risk of

1.9 Servicing1
The system must undergo regular inspections and maintenance performed by different
trained staff depending on the task. Repairs to the system should only be carried out by
specially trained personnel or specialist personnel.
Dräger recommends concluding a maintenance contract with DrägerService and having all
maintenance work (inspection, maintenance and repair) carried out by DrägerService.
Only use genuine Dräger parts for all maintenance work.

2.2 Function description
This Fire Training System 8000 (FTS 8000) fire simulation system is used for simulation of
the realistic deployment scenarios for fire and rescue services. The following chapters
describe in more detail the component parts of the fire simulation system used to form the
exercises.

The system consists of three fire simulation containers, each with one fireplace. On
container 1, the technical room is connected to the switch cabinet. Containers 1 and 2 are
aligned perpendicularly and connected using bridge fittings. Container 3 is aligned at a
90 °C angle to container 2 and connected with bridge fittings. Container 3 is connected by
a door to containers 2 and 1, and containers 1 and 2 project into one another.
2.3 Safety and monitoring equipment
The fire simulation system is equipped with the following technical safety devices:
• Emergency stop button
• Gas sensors
• Temperature sensors
• X-zones
• Wireless connection of the remote control to the receiver (not illustrated)

Do not remove, modify or block safety devices such as safety and monitoring devices. Do
not operate the system if any one of the safety and monitoring devices is not fully

The gas sensors require a warm-up phase of 15 minutes to be fully operational. No
correct measured values can be displayed during this time. The gas sensors are not yet
fully functional.

An emergency stop is ensured at all times when a gas concentration of 25 % of the lower
explosive limit is reached.

2.3.1 Emergency stop button
The emergency stop buttons are located on the remote control and outside on the technical
room.
When an emergency stop switch is triggered, an immediate emergency stop is initiated in
the training rooms. In this process the gas supply is stopped, all gas-fired fireplaces are
switched off, the fan in C3 is switched to maximum output and the emergency lighting is
switched on.
The smoke removal flap above the flash over (wood-fired) must be opened manually using
the pulley fitted on the inside.
The measuring and monitoring equipment remains operational.
Only when the actuated emergency stop button is set back to its initial position, and, if
triggered via the remote control, when the remote control is switched back on again, can
the alarm be acknowledged using the reset button on the cabinet. After the emergency stop
operation has been reset, the ventilator continues to run for 1 minute.
2.3.2 Gas sensor and X-zone
A gas sensor is installed in the technical room in container 1. Outside the system there are
3 X-zones set up that monitor the hazard area. An X-zone is connected to the system via
cable. If the X-zones are not connected, the fire simulation system automatically switches
to emergency stop mode.
The controllers of the gas sensor and X-zones are located in the cabinet.
The heads of the gas sensors continuously monitor for explosive gases and vapors in the
surrounding air and are factory-set to detect predefined gas mixtures.
When the measured values reach 15 % of the lower explosive limit (LEL), a warning is
issued in the software. At 25 % of the LEL, the fire simulation system automatically
switches to emergency stop mode. As soon as the gas concentration is less than 15 % of
the LEL it is possible to reset the alarm using the reset button on the cabinet. After reset of
the alarm the ventilators continue to run for 1 minute.
The gas sensors can display different basic values due to fluctuations in the ambient
temperature, air humidity or ambient pressure (tolerance ±3%). The initiation of the
emergency stop mode at 25 % of the LEL is still maintained.
2.3.3 Temperature sensor
Temperature sensors are installed in each fire room to avoid personal injuries and damage
to the system. The temperature sensors installed in the fire rooms protect the system
against overheating.

NOTICE
For temperature alarms, only the fireplaces in the area of the respective temperature
sensor are switched off and the ventilation and emergency lighting switched on. The
affected area is defined in advance and can encompass anything from one exercise room
to an entire floor of the exercise area. All other areas not included in the area can still be
operated. Systems comprised of only one area go completely into emergency stop
operation.

A warning is issued when a temperature of +200 °C at a height of 1 m is achieved. At a
temperature of +250 °C, the fire simulation system switches the area to emergency stop
operation. Only if the temperature has fallen to less than +200 °C at a height of 1 m it is
possible to reset the alarm using the reset button on the cabinet. After reset of the alarm,
the ventilator continues to run for 1 minute.
When a temperature below the ceiling of +500 °C is reached in the software, a warning is
issued and at a maximum of +650 °C the fire simulation system automatically switches the
area to emergency stop mode. Only if the temperature below the ceiling has fallen to less
than +500 °C it is possible to reset the alarm using the reset button on the cabinet. After
reset of the alarm, the ventilator continues to run for 1 minute.
2.3.4 Remote control wireless interface
If the wireless interface between the remote control and the receiver in the technical room
is interrupted, the system is automatically switched to emergency stop operation. The
alarm can only be reset using the reset button on the cabinet when the wireless interface
has been restored.
2.3.5 Emergency lighting
The emergency lighting is switched on automatically in the event of an emergency stop
mode.
2.4 Facility control system
The system is controlled via the touchscreen in the technical room and via the corre-
sponding remote control on-site.
2.4.1 Technical room
Located in the technical room is the cabinet with touchscreen for displaying and operating
the software.

The touchscreen can be used to start things such as the igniters for the fireplaces. In
addition, the status of the system with all safety devices, valves, temperature sensors, etc.
is displayed.

NOTICE
The emergency stop button on the remote control switches the remote control off. This
disconnects the wireless interface between the remote control and the receiver, triggering
an emergency stop operation on the system.

There is also a cabinet in the technical room where, for example, the key switch for
controlling the system, the reset switches for the alarm and other switches and displays are
located. The layout of the cabinet is provided below.

Only activate the "remote maintenance" key switch for as long as the software has to be
accessed remotely. The activation of the key switch activates the modem, which causes
costs. To keep these costs as low as possible, the key switch must be deactivated when
the respective maintenance work is complete.

2.4.2 Remote control
The remote control is used for the wireless operation of the exercise points and has a
wireless range of approx. 100 m to the radio receiver across a clear area.
The following exercise options can be controlled via the remote control:
• Switching the main flame on or off and setting the flame height.
For the operation of the remote control, read and follow the operating instructions in
appendix 2 of this customer documentation.
Given below is the general layout of the various remote controls. Not every type of remote
control is used with every system. The "Operation" chapter describes the precise key
assignment of the corresponding remote control.

2.5 System power supply
2.5.1 Gas supply
The gas supply is provided by the operator and is not supplied by Dräger. The connection
for the gas supply is located on the outside of the fire simulation system. Various valves
required to supply the gas to the exercise points are actuated via the software.
2.5.2 Water supply
The water supply is provided by the operator and is not supplied by Dräger.

Danger of death and risk of property damage due to insufficient safety distance from the
system to the gas supply
If the gas supply is set up too close to the system, a fire or even an explosion may occur
in some circumstances.
The gas supply must be set up in line with local regulations at a safety distance of at least
5 m away from the system (see Fig. 18 on page 28).
