CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.0 Safety Su ary
Hig current, voltage, and rotating parts can cause serious or fatal injury. T e use of electric mac inery, like all ot er uses of
concentrated power and rotating equipment, may be azardous. Installing, operating, and maintaining electric mac inery
s ould be performed by qualified personnel, in accordance wit applicable provisions of t e National Electrical Code and
sound local practices. Failure to comply wit t ese precautions or wit specific warnings elsew ere in t is manual violates
safety standards of design, manufacture, and intended use of t e instrument. Dynapar assumes no liability for t e customer's
failure to comply wit t ese requirements.
Rotating Machinery
Avoid contact wit rotating parts. Avoid by-passing or rendering inoperative any safety guards or protection devices. Avoid
extended exposure in close proximity to mac inery wit ig noise levels. Use proper care and procedures in andling, lifting,
installing, operating and maintaining t e equipment.
Before Installation
Safe maintenance practices wit qualified personnel is imperative. Before starting maintenance procedures, be positive t at, (1)
equipment connected to t e s aft will not cause mec anical rotation, (2) main mac ine windings ave been disconnected and
secured from all electrical power sources, and (3) all accessory devices associates wit t e work area ave been de-energized.
If ig potential insulation test is required, follow procedures and precautions outlined in NEMA standards MG-1.
Grounding
Improperly grounding t e frame of t e mac ine can cause serious or fatal injury to personnel. Grounding of t e mac ine frame
and structure s ould comply wit t e National Electrical Code and wit sound local practices. C eck wiring diagram before
connecting power.
Do Not Operate In An Explosive At osphere
Do not operate t e instrument in t e presence of flammable gases or fumes. Operating any electrical instrument in suc an
environment constitutes a definite safety azard.
Keep Away Fro Live Circuits
Operating personnel must not remove instrument covers. Component replacement and internal adjustments must be made by
qualified maintenance personnel. Do not replace components wit power cable connected. To avoid injuries, always
disconnect power and disc arge circuits before touc ing t em.
Do Not Substitute Parts Or Modify Instru ent
Do not install substitute parts or perform any unaut orized modification to t e instrument. Introducing additional azards is
dangerous. Return t e instrument to an aut orized Dynapar representative for service and repair to ensure t at safety features
are maintained.

A CAUTION eading precedes potentially dangerous procedures t roug out t is manual. Instructions in t e warnings must be
followed.

1.2 Description
T e Nort Star SLIM Tac P
®
P SL56 is a modular digital encoder. T is magnetoresistive encoder sensor-based unit as been
designed for fast, easy mounting onto a standard NEMA 56C motor face. T e basic design p ilosop y is as follows: T e
encoder frame is mounted onto t e C-face flange of a motor. T is positions t e sensor and contains t e electronics. T e
magnetic pulse w eel on t e motor s aft as magnetic pulses imprinted on its outside surface. As t e motor spins, t e passing
magnetic pulses actuate t e magnetoresistive sensor. T e resulting electronic signals are processed into square wave signals by
t e internal electronics.

CHAPTER 2
INSTALLATION
2.0 Inspection and Unpacking
Inspect s ipping container for external damage. All claims for damage (apparent or concealed) or partial loss of s ipment must
be made in writing to Dynapar wit in (5) days from receipt of goods. If damage or loss is apparent, please notify t e s ipping
agent immediately.
Open s ipping container and locate t e packing list. T e packing list is included to verify t at all components, accessories, and
manual were received. Please use t e packing list to c eck off eac item as t e unit is unpacked. Inspect for damage. We
recommend t at t e s ipping container be retained for future s ipping, storage, or return to factory purposes.
If any equipment was damaged in transit, be sure to file proper claims promptly wit t e carrier and insurance company. Please
advise us of suc filing. In case of parts s ortages, advise us immediately. Dynapar cannot be responsible for any missing parts
unless notified wit in 60 days of s ipment.
2.1 Motor Facing and Shaft
To prepare t e motor facing and s aft for installation, perform t e following steps. See Figure 2.
1. Clean outer rim and surface of motor facing and s aft of paint, grease, dirt, and ot er debris w ere SLIM Tac P

unit contacts motor or accessory. Also ensure t at mating surfaces ave not been damaged and t at unit will fit squarely
on motor.
2. Apply a t in layer of corrosion preventative or oil to motor facing and s aft to aid assembly and provide some
corrosion protection.
UNOTEU
Ensure there is no paint, burrs, protrusions, or deformations on the motor facing or
shaft. If the enclosure does not fit squarely on the motor facing, the alignment between
the sensor module and the magnetic pulse wheel may be degraded.

2.2 Encoder Fra e Installation
To install t e encoder frame, perform t e following steps.
1. Orient t e encoder frame so t e 4.5 inc I.D. surface will fit over t e 4.5 inc C flange (encapsulated side toward t e
motor). Mount frame onto t e motor flange. Insert t e four 3/8 inc x 16 UNC socket ead cap screws t roug t e frame
and into t e motor frame. Use a 5/16 inc ex wrenc to tig ten a nominal 25 foot pounds. See Figure 3.

2. Rotate t e pulse w eel so t e set screw or label “T is Side Out” are visible, away from t e motor. Slide t e pulse
w eel onto t e motor s aft. Pus t e w eel along t e s aft until t e edge of t e pulse w eel is flus wit t e
mac ined recess in t e encoder frame. See Figure 4. We recommend you use a straig t edge for t is purpose. For best
results, align t e two surfaces to wit in ±0.010 inc . T e purpose of t is step is to properly center t e pulse w eel under
t e sensor.
3. Wit t e pulse w eel properly aligned, use a 9/64 inc ex wrenc to tig ten t e 8 x 32 UNC socket ead cap screw in
t e pulse w eel clamp to a nominal 30 in-pounds.
4. Pulse w eels w ic utilize t e set screws s ould be tig tened to a nominal 30 in⋅lbs torque. Be sure t e w eel does not
ave excessive wobble greater t an 0.010 inc . Rotate t e motor s aft by and. It s ould freely rotate and not touc t e
frame at any time. If everyt ing is mec anically correct, t e resulting sensor to pulse w eel air gap will be a nominal 0.019
inc .

5. Position t e encoder cover over t e mounted encoder frame. Insert and tig ten four P illips ead screws. T is completes
t e mec anical mounting of t e unit.
UNOTE
Be sure the letter “Z” and “This Side Out” are visible on the face
of the pulse wheel after installation.

2.3 Electrical Installation
Electrical connections are made to t e sensor module t roug a standard 1/2 inc NPT liquid tig t flexible conduit. T e nipple
lengt may be c anged to extend t e outlet box if desired. Interconnection cable recommendations are as follows: stranded
copper, 22 t roug 16 gage, braided or foil wit drain wire s ielding 0.05 µF maximum total mutual or direct capacitance,
outer s eat insulated. S rink tubing may be placed over any wires wit out insulation. For lengt s over 100 feet, use 18 gage
or larger, to a maximum of *1000 feet. If s ielded twisted pair wire is used, do not cross c annels. Keep eac pair of
complementary c annel outputs toget er in a single twisted pair (e.g., A and A complement).

UCAUTION!
Reversing power and common will not damage the unit. However, applying power to
any of the sensor outputs may cause damage.

NOTE
The shield in the sensor module is isolated from the frame of the encoder for maximum
noise immunity. The shield wire or pin should be connected to the shield of the cable and
that of the drive or other receiving device.

rounding: For applications with high ground potential differences, DO NOT ground the encoder through both
achine and controls end. Connect the shield at the controls end only. NOTE: If the shield is connected at
both ends, grounding problems that degrade system performance can result.
CE rounding Measures – For best EMC i unity the cable screen ust be grounded on both encoder and
controls end. For cable lengths longer than 30 or outdoor applications, additional easures ust be
i ple ented to co ply with CE require ents. Connection of the encoder to DC power supply network is
prohibited if CE co pliance is required. CE-co pliant products are tested to EN61326-1 EMC.
In all cases, syste CE co pliance is ulti ately the responsibility of the anufacturer integrating the encoder.

2.4 Quick Release Connector Hood Wiring
To install t e Quick Release Connector, perform t e following steps.
1. Remove t e four screws from t e mating connector ousing t at old t e terminal block in place. Remove terminal block
from ousing.
2. Insert wiring t roug liquid tig t flexible seal and mating connector ousing. Leave enoug wire exposed to comfortably
reac t e terminal block. Wire to terminal block according to wire code in Table 1. A similar wiring list is attac ed to
enclosure.
NOTE
There are two orientations of the connector hood. The terminal block can be inserted
either way so the connector hood points up or down. Choose the direction best for your
application.
4. Tig ten Liquid Tig t fitting on ousing. OPTIONAL: In some ostile environments, seal between connector body and
Sensor Module can be improved by smearing a sealant (silicone grease, etc.) on t e neoprene seal of t e connector.
5. Mate connector into place on sensor mount and snap t e two latc es into place. If only one sensor is being installed,
ensure cover plate is installed over ot er sensor ole.

2.5 Returning Equip ent to Dynapar
If it is necessary to return t e unit for repair or replacement, a Return Goods Aut orization (RGA) number must be obtained
from a factory representative before returning t e equipment to our service department. W en returning an instrument for
service, t e following information must be provided before we can attempt any repair.
1. Instrument model and serial number
2. User’s name, company, address, and p one number
3. Malfunction symptoms
4. Description of system
5. Returned Goods Aut orization number
