Power Supply
ECTACO®jetBook®K-12 is powered by a special Li-
Polymer rechargeable battery. When the battery
becomes weak, the red LED signal starts blinking. To
restore full functionality of the device, recharge the
battery as soon as possible.
The battery compartment is located on the back of the
device and is covered with a plastic cover.
• To turn the device on, press and release the Back
(On/Off) key and then within 5 seconds press and
release the Record key.
• Press and hold the Back (On/Off) key for 3 seconds to
turn the device off.
How to Recharge the Battery
Note: Only a special rechargeable battery, special
charger, and special USB cable may be used with your
ECTACO®jetBook®K-12. Use of an inappropriate
external power supply may cause failure of the device
and will void the warranty.
• Connect the AC/DC adapter to your device via the mini-
USB port (see General View), or connect your device to
your PC using the special USB cable. The red LED
signal shows that the battery is recharging.

Note: Charge the battery overnight prior to the first use
of the device.
microSD Card
In addition to the internal memory, ECTACO®jetBook®
K-12 supports microSD and microSDHC cards.
• Create the following folders on your microSD card: My
Books and My Music.
• Copy your books to the My Books folder on the
microSD card.
• Copy your audio files to the My Music folder on the
microSD card.
Slide your microSD card into the slot located on the top
edge of the device – the contacts of the card face up.
Push the card gently until it clicks into place. To eject the
card, push it in slightly.
Note: If the microSD slot is covered, please detach the
slot cover before you insert the card.
PC Communication
The PC Communication function allows you to manage
files and folders stored in the internal memory of the
device. For example, you may wish to add books and
music files.

• Turn the device on.
• Connect the device to your PC using the special USB
cable and the mini-USB port located on the device (see
General View). Shielded cables must be used with this
device to ensure compliance with the class B FCC limits.
Please wait while your PC detects the device.
• Navigate to the newly detected removable disk on your
PC to browse through the files stored in the internal
memory of the device.
• Copy your files to the respective folders. For example,
copy your books to the My books folder.
Note: Always back up your important data! Neither the
manufacturer nor the dealers assume any responsibility
for lost or corrupted data.
Initialization
In the rare event that the data on the screen is corrupted
or a program is not responding properly, you will need to
perform a reset.
The Reset button is located on the back of the device
under the battery compartment cover. It can be accessed
with any thin object like a paper clip. Never use a needle
or a sharp pin for this purpose since it can damage the
device.

Electrostatic discharge may cause failure of the device.
Please use the Reset button to restore full functionality of
the device.
Display and Main Menu
ECTACO®jetBook®K-12 features a 5-inch screen (640 ×
480 pixels) with a graphical interface. The Main Menu
consists of six sections, which visually organize access
to the ECTACO®jetBook®K-12 applications.
Note: Selecting screen items is done with the trackball
(see General View).
Main Menu
• To display the Main Menu, turn the device on, and/or
exit the currently running application. Use the Back
(On/Off) key for this purpose. The Main Menu consists of
the following sections: MyLibrary,Oxford®Reading
Support,Language and Games,Science and Math,
Audio Books and Music,Extras and Help.
The Main Menu sections are described below. The
contents of the Main Menu depend on product model.
• Use the MyLibrary section to access ebooks.
• Use the Oxford®Reading Support section to access
Talking Oxford®Dictionary, Talking Oxford®English<-
>Spanish Dictionary, SAT Preparation Course,
SpeedReading Course, English<->Spanish Text

Translator, Irregular Verbs, Idioms, Spanish Grammar (in
English), English Grammar (in Spanish), and English
Grammar (in English).
• Use the Language and Games section to access
Phonetic Language Teacher®, U-Learn™, Audio
PhraseBook™, Pictured Dictionary, 180-Language
Dictionary, Vocabulary Builder, Linguistic Crossword,
Linguistic FlashCards, Pockets, Translation Test, Spell-
It-Right, and Sudoku.
• Use the Science and Math section to access Graphing
Calculator, Scientific Calculator, Accounting and Loan
Calculator, World Economics and Geography, US
History and Facts, Math References, Chemistry, Periodic
Table, Physics, Metric Conversion, Earth Science, and
Biology.
• Use the Audio Books and Music section to access
music and other audio files.
• Use the Extras and Help section to access Help,
Settings, Learning Settings, Voice Recorder, and World
Time.
• Use the trackball to select a section.
• When in a section, highlight the desired application
name and then press the trackball. The application will
open.
• To close an application, press the Back (On/Off) key.

Using the Voice Commands
Voice commands are always available when the
interface language is set to English. They might be
unavailable for certain languages.
• When in the Main Menu, press and hold the Record key.
You will see the Speak now! message.
• Say the name of the desired section or application and
then release the Record key. The section or application
will then open.
On-screen Keyboard
The on-screen keyboard is a set of virtual keys displayed
on the screen. This set of keys simulates the
conventional physical keyboard or part of it.
In applications featuring text input, the on-screen
keyboard is activated automatically where it is applicable.
You can also activate the on-screen keyboard from the
pop-up menu, if available.
ECTACO®C-Pen® 1
With ECTACO®C-Pen®you can acquire and then
translate words or text portions from paper media. It is

capable of recognizing texts in languages based on Latin,
Cyrillic or Greek character set.
• Connect ECTACO®C-Pen®to your device. Make sure
the device is turned on.
Note: You can recharge the battery while using
ECTACO®C-Pen®– just use a special USB twin cable
(available separately) to connect ECTACO®C-Pen®to
the device and power supply. The device is capable of
working continuously, as long as ECTACO®C-Pen®is
connected to a power supply.
• Press the Function key on ECTACO®C-Pen®. You will
see the C-Pen ready dialog.
• Select the desired language and application.
• Place the tip of ECTACO®C-Pen®before the first
character of your text. The leg with the touch trigger
