Elan IRS2 User manual

Advanced IR Filtering Technology
The IRS2 features Advanced IR Filtering Technology that reduces IRI,
CFL, EMI, and ESI noise sources in addition to blocking plasma TV
emissions. This means that the IRS2 can be used in areas that receive
substantial ambient noise such as near plasma TVs or compact floures-
cent lights.
Note: The IRS2 will take a few seconds to adjust to a given noise
source. During this time, the blue Activity LED will glow brightly
and then fade out. If the interference disappears momentarily,
then returns, the fade down process will repeat. Certain noise
sources, however, (such as plasma screens) may result in low-level
flickering even after the fade down. This is normal. Such signals
have been filtered, allowing most equipment to be controlled.
Extreme Ambient Noise
In situations where the IRS2’s advanced IR filtering does NOT success-
fully filter ambient noise (in very close proximity to a plasma TV, for
example), an ELAN IRS7EP or IRS8EP Extreme Plasma IR Sensor should
be used. Please see the IRS7EP and/or IRS8EP Instructions for addi-
tional information.

Introduction
The IRS2 is a miniature ‘plasma-friendly’ IR sensor designed to be
mounted on flat surfaces: furniture recesses, under shelves, etc. This
sensor uses advanced IR filtering technology which allows it to work
even in areas that receive normally harmful interference (near plasma
TV’s, compact flourescent lights, etc.). The IRS2 features bare leads to
facilitate connection to terminal strips, IR distribution blocks, etc.. The
IRS1 Miniature Surface-Mount IR Sensor w/Plug is also available for
connecting to devices requiring a Quad plug connection such as ELAN’s
IRD4 Amplified Connection Block.
Features
• ‘Plasma-Friendly’ Technology Helps Block Plasma TV Interference
• IR Lens Rejects Visible Light Interference
• Stripped Leads Plus 4-Conductor Terminal Strip
• Internal Crosshatch Shield Inhibits EMI/ESI Interference
• STATUS Indicator: Green LED for System On/Off Indication
• ACTIVITY Indicator: Blue LED Indicates IR Signal Activity
Specifications:
• Requires 12VDC power supply, termination block and IR emitters for
IR operation.
• Mounting: Attach to any flat surface using included adhesive strip.
Apply adhesive strip to the back, top, or bottom surfaces of the IRS1.
• Power: +12VDC @ 6mA
• Carrier Frequency Acceptance Range: 28kHz to 90kHz

Stand-Alone System Connections:
Note: For ELAN system connections, please refer to the appropriate
ELAN Multi-Room Controller’s installation manual.
A: Basic System
Fig. 2 shows a basic IR distribution system using the ELAN IRD4
Amplified IR Connection Block, IRS2 IR Sensor, and IRE1 IR Emitters to
control various source equipment.
1. Mount the IRS2 IR Sensor in a recessed cabinet area or under a shelf,
using the adhesive strip supplied.
2. Plug the IRS2 and IR emitters into the ELAN IRD4 as shown.
3. Set the dipswitches on the IRD4 to LP ON and NET ON or OFF.
4. Plug in the power supply.
5. IR signals sent to the IRS2 will pass through the IRD4 and control the
equipment.
B: Multi-Room System
Fig. 3 shows an example of multiple IRS2 IR Sensors in a stand-alone
multi-room system. These control the various components in the
equipment area.
1. Pull Cat-5 from each room (home runs) to the IRD4 terminator near the
controlled components.
Note: MAX DISTANCE of ALL Wire Runs is 1200 ft using Cat-5
cable. When using long lengths, the dipswitch on the IRD4 must be
set to the NET ON position and a 500 Ohm resistor must be used.
2. Connect IR sensors in each room to the Cat-5 runs as shown, using
the terminal strips supplied.
3. Connect the Cat-5 wires to the correct location on the IRD4 connec-
tion terminals (+12VDC, IR, STATUS, and GND).
4. Install and plug the IRE1 Emitters into the IRD4.
5. Set the dipswitches to LP ON and NET ON.
6. Plug the local IRS2 IR Sensor into the IR SENSOR jack.
7. Plug in the PWR2 12VDC Power Supply.
8. IR signals sent to the IR sensors will pass through the IRD4 and
control the equipment.
Note: Refer to the ELAN IRD4 Instructions for power supply
considerations and other important information.
STATUS Brightness
Fig. 3 also shows how an external resistor can be added to reduce the
brightness of the Status LEDs on ELAN IR sensors. In this example, a
PWR2 12VDC Power Supply is used as the voltage source to indicate
ON/OFF status of an A/V Receiver. Choose a resistor value that achieves
the brightness you desire (about 2.2k to 12k, 1/8W). Connect it in series
with the STATUS lead on each IR sensor, as shown.
