Elan IRS5 User manual

Advanced IR Filtering Technology
The IRS5 features Advanced IR Filtering Technology that reduces IRI,
CFL, EMI, and ESI noise sources in addition to blocking plasma TV
emissions. This means that the IRS1 can be used in areas that receive
substantial ambient noise such as near plasma TVs or compact floures-
cent lights.
Note: The IRS5 will take a few seconds to adjust to a given noise
source. During this time, the blue Activity LED will glow brightly
and then fade out. If the interference disappears momentarily,
then returns, the fade down process will repeat. Certain noise
sources, however, (such as plasma screens) may result in low-level
flickering even after the fade down. This is normal. Such signals
have been filtered, allowing most equipment to be controlled.
Extreme Ambient Noise
In situations where the IRS5’s advanced IR filtering does NOT success-
fully filter ambient noise (in very close proximity to a plasma TV, for
example), an ELAN IRS7EP or IRS8EP Extreme Plasma IR Sensor should
be used. Please see the IRS7EP and/or IRS8EP Instructions for addi-
tional information.

Introduction
The IRS5 is a miniature ‘plasma-friendly’ IR sensor designed to sit on a
shelf, cabinet or any flat surface. This sensor uses advanced IR filtering
technology which allows it to work even in areas that receive normally
harmful interference (near plasma TV’s, compact flourescent lights, etc.).
Features
• 3.5mm Quad Plug Accommodates STATUS, IR, +12VDC, & GND
• ‘Plasma-Friendly’ Technology Helps Block Plasma TV Interference
• IR Lens Rejects Visible Light Interference
• Internal Crosshatch Shield Inhibits EMI/ESI Interference
• STATUS Indicator: Green LED for System On/Off Indication
• ACTIVITY Indicator: Blue LED Indicates IR Signal Activity
Specifications:
• Requires 12VDC power supply, termination block and IR emitters for
IR operation.
• Mounting: Sits on any flat surface. A special pad protects the surface
on which the IRS3 is placed in addition to providing anti-skid action.
• Power: 12VDC @ 6 mA
• Carrier Frequency Acceptance Range: 28kHz to 90kHz.
• Control Range: Up to 35 feet, depending on remote strength and ambient
noise conditions
• Control Angle: +/- 50 degrees off-axis
• Room-to-Room Wire Recommendations: Cat-5
• Maximum recommended cable length: 1200 feet using Cat-5
• Dimensions: 3 3/16" (81mm) W x 1 1/8" (28mm) H x 1 1/16" (27mm) D.

Stand-Alone System Connections:
Note: For ELAN system connections, please refer to the appropriate
ELAN Multi-Room Controller’s installation manual.
A: Basic System
Fig. 2 shows a basic IR distribution system using the ELAN IRD4
Amplified IR Connection Block, IRS5 IR Sensor, and IRE3 High-Output IR
Emitters to control source equipment.
1. Place the IRS5 on a shelf top, a cabinet or other horizontal surface.
2. Plug the IRS5 and IR emitters into the ELAN IRD4, as shown.
3. Set the dipswitches on the IRD4 to LP ON and NET ON or OFF.
4. Plug in the power supply.
5. IR signals sent to the IRS5 will pass through the IRD4 and control the
equipment.
B: Multi-Room System
Fig. 3 shows an example of multiple ELAN IR Sensors in a multi-room
system.
1. Pull Cat-5 from each room (home runs) to the IRD4 terminator near the
controlled components.
Note: MAX DISTANCE of ALL Wire Runs is 1200 ft using Cat-5
cable. When using long lengths, the dipswitch on the IRD4 must be
set to the NET ON position and a 500 Ohm resistor must be used.
2. Connect IR sensors in each room to the Cat-5 runs as shown, using
the terminal strips supplied.
3. Connect the Cat-5 wires to the correct location on the IRD4 connec-
tion terminals (+12VDC, IR, STATUS, and GND).
4. Plug the IRE1 and IRE2 Emitters into the IRD4.
5. Set the dipswitches to LP ON and NET ON.
6. Plug the local IRS5 IR Sensor into the IR SENSOR jack.
7. Plug in the PWR2 12VDC Power Supply.
8. IR signals sent to the IR sensors will pass through the IRD4 and
control the equipment.
Note: Refer to the ELAN IRD4 Instructions for power supply
considerations and other important information.
STATUS Brightness
Fig. 3 also shows how an external resistor can be added to reduce the
brightness of the Status LEDs on ELAN IR sensors. In this example, a
PWR2 12VDC Power Supply is used as the voltage source to indicate
ON/OFF status of an A/V Receiver. Choose a resistor value that achieves
the brightness you desire (about 2.2k to 12k, 1/8W). Connect it in series
with the STATUS lead on each IR sensor, as shown.
